Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

@PinotGroggio @skullbabe I just couldn't let it lie yesterday. I did get a little sarcastic at the end. Some days I channel Reni Eddo- Lodge - an eye roll, a heavy sigh and a hard pass. As for the other one - its batshit crazy. I am liking the style and retorts of some of the non deluded posters and as for the other side of the argument, card carrying...

You were amazing on there. I can see towards the very end it was just frustration and exhaustion at certain stubborn racism apologist who refused even the basic decency of admitting the racism existed and decided to start heckling and tone policing.

Thank you. I had some good company but the thread was moving on so quickly it was hard to interact anyone other than who you were locked in 'discussion' with. My name is mud. Paraphrasing - Apparently I am a privileged member of the ruling classes who brags about being British and I am not worthy of sympathy . They are good people who want to look after us. (well, probably not me) 🙄😂You couldn't make it up.

skullbabe · 05/07/2023 06:18

Indeed it was crazy making - you did well. It’s so nice to know that a card carrying member of the British ruling classes could advocate on out behalf as well as you did 😉

@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting your poise is really something else. I admire it hugely. I am giving up on mumsnet now (cancelled premium membership etc). It is just not worth it to me anymore and so triggering.

Disclaimer for full transparency for those who don't know me: I'm white. Posting as ally.

I am really sorry hear that @Lndnmummy, you fought valiantly too. I saw that you were on there ebating' with a pile on, whilst trying not to step in crap people were spewing in my 'debates'. It was all moving so quickly and getting bogged down with the 'Just stop oil' style Anti Trans/Surrogacy distraction stuff. I was actually going to fact check the discussion you were in that I briefly caught sight of. Another poster said they were quitting because of racism. Did I see you get blamed for that? Don't pay the premium, just chill over here from time to time. I know you are white and I respect and appreciate your alliance. I do recognise the need for a break, though. I have had to have a few over the years.

So telling so many posters kept saying that they were sad because they pictured the Little Mermaid as red headed…….😳

My guess is they’d say that and then find an excuse to moan if it was a black person with naturally red hair.

I THINK I did get blamed for it, and most certainly name called and piled on. It moved so fast I couldn't keep up, I had a work deadline so had to give up.
Sending love and strength. Upwards and onwards we go. Again.

Lndnmummy · 05/07/2023 20:34

Sorry name change fail. I have only name changed once so not very good at it.

It was bonkers. Cognitive dissonance central! I hope you are ok. Onwards and upwards.

Everyday brings the latest version of seemingly intelligent discourse, riddled with racism of course! Wine

How very dare you! They are not racists!... The ones that accuse them of this are as damaging to womens' rights as Trans Women ( Paraphrasing). It explains why anytime someone mentions racism they now find some tenuous link to gender and go on a gender-terrorist rant to disrupt the conversation. Those threads are where empathy, self-awareness and integrity go to die. No need to beware the Jaberwock when that poisonous niche of feminists and their acid white tears are about.

I was at a fair yesterday (in Netherlands) and they had Golliwogs for sale. Oh and an empty restaurant somehow had no tables for us despite being more than half empty. Their website says you can do takeaway so we asked for that-but were told to wait outside.

How hard is it for people to not be racist? It seems to be an impossible ask.

That is disgraceful! They deserve to be named and shamed.

LadyKenya · 09/07/2023 09:06

That is exactly why unless I am going on holiday to a black majority Country, I will just not bother going anywhere else@HadalyEve . I face enough racism at home, I am not paying to face it abroad, if I can help it. Those figures are disgraceful, and so stereotypical😩.

LadyKenya · 09/07/2023 09:08

@HadalyEve I hope that you found somewhere else to eat as well.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 09/07/2023 10:50

@HadalyEve That's horrific, and quite ironic given that the King of the Netherlands , has just apologised for the Netherlands role in the international slave trade which he described as a 'crime against humanity'. Please do leave them a review to alert other potential diners that their money is best spent elsewhere. Name and shame!

GoogleMeNot · 09/07/2023 13:03

@HadalyEve hope you'll leave them a google and TripAdvisor review. They ought to be shamed.

I've thought about this alot! My holidays are more often visiting relatives in other countries than a holiday holiday if you see what I mean but when thinking about going on holiday in the more traditional sense, I've seen many Black people express that they are very very careful where they go for obvious reasons and some regions are entirely out of the question. But what do you make of the idea that given anti-Blackness is probably the only uniting global force common in most places, that Black people should travel anyway?

LadyKenya · 09/07/2023 14:30

That is a really heavy question@DojaPhat . It pains me to think that so many black people will be limited in their desire to travel, due to the racism they may experience. When I was younger, say in my 20's, and travelling to say Greece, turkey etc, I don't recall being made to feel away due to being black. I certainly felt it in France, and walked out of a shop that I was in, leaving what I was going to purchase at the till, when the woman serving decided that she could not see me, and went to serve the white man, who was standing behind me. I am now more aware of how racism can manifest itself. I think that black people should travel, and see other Countries, but be aware that some Countries are just not a good idea in general for black people to visit. I personally have no desire to visit Eastern European Countries for example, or China. It is interesting how China is entrenching itself in Africa, and the Caribbean though. But that is another conversation!

Exchange230316 · 09/07/2023 20:41

I would love a discussion in China in black majority countries. I personally do not get it at all. I need a discussion with someone knowledgeable.

Starseeking · 09/07/2023 22:34

I had the most horrible time when I visited Istanbul about 8 years ago for a 5 day hen do. The racism towards me was so bad and blatant that even my Asian and white friends were aware of it. By day 3, I was feeling so stressed and anxious and forced to stay in my hotel that I wanted to go home.

Having had that experience, I can see why Black people would not want to travel places we already know we are not welcome. Call it self-preservation, rather than limiting your horizons. I know wouldn't want to go through anything like my Turkish "holiday" again.

PinotGroggio · 13/07/2023 08:08

I've just read that the last remaining victims of the Tulsa race riots have been denied reparations. And so it continues ☹️ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jul/09/tulsa-race-massacre-judge-rejects-reparations-lawsuit

(I wouldn't post this anywhere else on MN though, as I couldn't handle the "how do you know it was racially motivated?" comments that would ensue.)

<<sigh>> Justice is blind... death and dumb!

LadyKenya · 13/07/2023 09:50

This does not surprise me in the slightest. I would be more surprised if they were actually to receive some reparations. There is always an excuse as to why they cannot pay out to black people.
