I don't know about telling them - it may well prejudice them against you. I don't think you'd be entitled to maternity leave either though you should be able to get maternity allowance from the DSS which is worth the same amount. Wait and see how the interview is going/ see how many people are there etc. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

ledkr · 07/07/2010 07:19

Could always tell them you didn't know at time of interview. they won't have to pay you but will have to cover you when off which might bother them.

cler · 07/07/2010 08:14

I have been up since 5.30 and been sick a few times but feel alot better now i have eaten. I had my booking appointment with midwife mon and i will be getting induced at 38 weeks due to my extremly fast labour with the last and not making it into hospital then having a hemorage at 10 days and being admited to hospital.
There is alot of people having miscarriages and i am so sorry for them, it worrys me so much that something will happen to my baby and i seem to panic with every bit of pain in my tummy.
Ive eaten alot of junk in past few weeks and gained a stone in weight so yesturday i went shopping and got lots of healthy food so today is the start of my healthy diet again because i dont want to put all my weight back on. I hope everyone has a good day.xx

Deliaskis · 07/07/2010 08:45

Had my first MW apt last night, and it was a complete let down. I had previously had a telephone consult with GP, and she said make a MW apt, and so I had assumed this would be the booking in apt where they do all your medical history etc. But no, it was an apt for them to fill in a form (containing info which could all have been got from my computer medical record which was sat right in front of the MW when I was there) to send off to the hospital for my actual booking in apt. What a complete waste of time.

The lady was nice, but she didn't even ask me how I was was feeling, etc. it was basically just a bureaucracy exercerise. I am sure there must be a better way to do this?

Is this normal or is it just the way they do things locally to me?

Glad I hadn't had time off work for it.

Anyway, sorry for whinge, apart from that, I think all is still well with me.

Gigglet - wow, Australia! In a couple of months? You are a brave woman to do all this whilst pg - Is most of your family out there? Tbh, if I was you, and they were there I would be on a plane tomorrow too. I love having my family around me for support.

Scuba - It's a hard one. They can not be prejudiced against you for telling them but I bet they would be on the sly as it will be more invonvenient for them as bad as that sounds. You wouldn't necessarily know about your pg at this stage so you could get away with telling them later.

Ledkr - I did actually tell her about you (I knew you wouldn't mind, being faceless and all ), I hoped it helped to hear positive stories.

Chloe55 · 07/07/2010 08:50

Delia, that was exactly like mine - she didn't even take my blood pressure, I felt so cheated.

Deliaskis · 07/07/2010 09:04

Chloe55 cheated, yes that's the right word!

Soooo let down.

GinaFB · 07/07/2010 09:21

Delia I know some places do a brief meeting prior to booking in which I guess is what you had.

I am booking in today with my Midwife, they will take blood (eeek) a urine samle etc and take blood pressure and go through full medical histories etc etc it will take a while.

GinaFB · 07/07/2010 09:26

Oh and talk about symptons kicking in! The last 2 days have been dreadful! I am totally exhausted by lunchtime and I am feeling nauseous constantly! {self pity emotion}

americanexpat · 07/07/2010 09:28

gigglet - Moving to Australia in 2 months? Wow, you have my admiration! I'm getting the itch to move back to America now, it's just the two of us on our own here. I'm sad that our families can't be more involved.

Deliaskis - that was very similar to my first appt. The MW took my BP, gave me a book and my pregnancy record, and asked where I wanted to receive my ante-natal care. I received an appointment for the ante-natal clinic + scan at 12 weeks (MW said it would include bloods as well).

KnitterNotTwitter · 07/07/2010 09:30

Delia i've got my booking in on Friday morning - it's an hour and a half's appointment so I'm expecting 'the works'! Then its back to the hospital on the 20th (my birthday!) for blood tests and then back there again on teh 26th for the 12 week scan (Same day as you I think GinaFB)

Moocowmrs - fingers crossed very tightly that it's a false alarm

Brownpaperandstring I've put you down as due 11-feb and said that it's scan confirmed - it can always be changed again after your 12 week scan...!

scuba I'd keep quiet until you have to tell them - you can always say that it was a surprise - a white lie is better than unemployment IMO...

Stats as of 09:21 Wed-07-Jul . We're now 105 people!!

gigglet that's great news your moving to Australia - it will be a very busy time for you in the next couple of months .

A question for those who have been through all this before - do the food adversions/need to eat all the time or feel ill last all through pg, or is it just a first trimester thing? I'm really struggling to find things to eat and have to force food down as it does seem to help, but at the same time it nearly makes me gag, and I have to eat so much or again I feel sick. It's all a viscious circle that I'm really hating at the minute.

angels1 · 07/07/2010 09:46

oh, and was listening to the radio in the bath this morning and they had a montage of clips on the london bombing - not good for a pregnant lady to listen to - the bath practically filled up with tears!!

Haven't heard from tabby in a while - hope she's feeling OK and the twins are doing well

GinaFB · 07/07/2010 10:45

KnitterNotTwitter yes 26th is mine too! 9.30am (thank goodness, having to wait through the day is unbareable) and then I have to get lots of blood taken!!

KnitterNotTwitter · 07/07/2010 10:59

ginaFB I'm at 10.30!!! Obviously not the same hospital though as that would be really weird...

OP posts:
scubamummy · 07/07/2010 10:59

Thanks for the advice ladies. Feel a bit guilty as it's a start-up so they'd need me to help with the launch, but I guess some work for them is better than none, and no, unemployment is not a tempting proposition!

Had my bloods taken a week ago. I was terrified beforehand but the woman who did it was very patient and of course, it didn't hurt once it actually got going - it's the fear that's the worst bit. Would recommend taking a biscuit/energy bar/banana with you and eating it 10 mins before your appointment, and then drinking a bit of lucozade afterwards, made me feel much better. I get the results at my 12 week scan in a fortnight's time. Fingers crossed for all of us!

angels1 · 07/07/2010 11:20

do they take much blood scubamummy? I'm not really that squemish with blood tests, but I do dislike them as I have tricky veins so it can take several attempts. But I can feel a bit light headed when they take the blood (maybe psychological, I don't know), so any more than one or 2 of those small pots and I'd get a bit worried I might go funny. A friend of mine said they had to take quite a bit from her, but she said that was as she's 1/2 Indian so they had to do extra tests (not sure what), so I'm not sure how much they need.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 07/07/2010 11:32

IIRC it's two or three small pots first time (I tend just to look the other way when they are doing it which is why I'm a bit vague). I have tricky veins too but I have found midwives to be far far better than most other nurses (sorry, other nurses...) at taking blood. When a nurse takes my blood I almost always end up with a big bruise, but that's only happened once in all the times I've had blood drawn by a midwife when pregnant.

sweetnitanitro · 07/07/2010 11:37

Ugh, I hate blood tests, my veins run away at the sight of a needle and it takes ages

Don't worry angels, you'll soon get used to it I think the first blood test at the booking in is just for sickle cell (more prevalent in certain races so probably why your friend had extra tests) so they only take one vial. At the 16-ish week one they take a bit more. I saw a phlebotomist for that and I flummoxed the poor woman with my rubbish veins!

As for the food aversions, mine certainly eased up as time went on. I went off almost everything for about 4 months but by the end I could eat anything (and everything!)

Got my booking in on Friday morning too! I don't know why I'm more nervous about it this time than I was the first time.... been a bit sick as well, I was up at 3am throwing up. I wish I could throw up at a more sociable hour.

GinaFB · 07/07/2010 11:51

KnitterNotTwitter Ooooh how exciting! Its going to seem like a really long 3ish weeks!!

angels1 · 07/07/2010 12:03

Don't read this post it your funny about needles/blood!!

I always warn the person attempting to take my blood that I have tricky veins and they seem to take a bit of time finding a good one (or in one case I got a loud moan and a nurse stomp off and get someone else to do it as she couldn't be bothered, making me feel like I was some oddity). In the past nurses have actually given up trying to find a vein and told me to come back another day to get someone else to do it, and whilst waiting to go into surgery an anaethatist (I know that isn't spelt right - sorry) gave me bruises all over my arms and hands trying to find something...so blood tests arn't exactly something I look forward to, but I'm most odd in this respect, I don't want to scare anyone else out there.

Lulabel27 · 07/07/2010 12:12

Hi All!
Sorry I've not posted for ages, been busy at work and it takes a while to catch up with the thread!

I'm so sorry for Panda although she probably won't read this. Its so scary this period of time - I hope as time goes on and we start to reach the end of the first trimester we all feel more secure.

I met my midwife on monday - she had to take 7(!!) blood samples and my veins gave up after 5. I had two midwives trying to do it and about 84 puncture marks all over my arms! I have to get the other two done at hospital at my 12 weeks scan on 20th July.

Also she told me because I had an operation on my neck to fuse 3 vertebrae after a car accident I probably can't have an epidural!! Agggh! So have to meet anaesthetist in September to discuss options.

I haven't told work yet but I have about 5 appointments between now and September so going to tell them on 20th July after scan (all being well).

Sorry for long post!! Lovely to catch up with you all. Much respect to Gigglet, I struggle to make it to Sainsburys never mind relocate to Australia!

KnitterNotTwitter · 07/07/2010 12:18

Actually it sounds like funny veins is quite common.... Mine do the running away at the sight of a needle thing too. i've always thought i was special - guess not. With the last pregnancy the tried to get blood out of my arm at the health clinic and couldn't so I got sent to the hospital. The nice blood taker there said that i should ask for a 'butterfly in the back of my hand' as that would be better for me...

I had to have blood tests to check I was 'back to normal' after the ectopic and remembered this advice. they looked at me a bit funny - tried to find a vein in my arm - cracked a joke about 'they must be in there somewhere' - took blood out of the back of my hand.

If anything my veins seem to be more needle-shy since being pregnant. I used to be an obsessive blood doner but can't any more as they struggle to find my veins so much it isn't cost effective for them to keep wasting packs on my veins apparently.

Hope that helps..

OP posts:
ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 07/07/2010 12:27

If it's on your neck it might not be a problem. My mother had fractured her spine lower down at one point and she did find that the epidural didn't take, but I'd had the impression that so long as it was higher up than the insertion area it should be OK. The anaesthetist will know better though.

geekygiraffe · 07/07/2010 12:40

I always faint after giving blood so can't donate! Boyfriend came along for the booking in blood tests, and actually I was fine, if a bit lightheaded all day. Just drank lots of ribena afterwards! They took four vials for the various tests, and I've just been told I need to get another one done as I'm booked in for a private nuchal test at the end of July.

Got my first scan on 19 July (the nhs dating one). It's at 8:40 - nice and early! Hope it will not confirm boyfriend's conviction that it's twins!!
