Hope no-one minds me kicking this one off - 39 pages seemed a bit unmanageable!

Had 20 week scan today. Tiddler unco-operative to start with (although not as bad as DD was - took 3 goes to see everything) and it looks like most of the bits are in the right places. Decided right at the very last minute not to find out the sex. Realised that, if DD thinks she's going to have a sister, that nothing, not even photographic evidence, will change her mind anyway. So stuck with the 'don't ask don't tell' as per first time around and will just have to wait to sort out all the sodding clothes 'til we know what we've got.

Although... What do gonads look like on a scan?! Got a very good look at the hips from underneath, so to speak, and thought I saw two little bright spots, but that could be the sitting bones of course. Anyone tell me what the crown jewels look like on a scan?!

8 weeks ahead, which is probably what my belly is

ilikeyoursleeves · 24/02/2009 20:13

Hi all, congrats to all those with recent scans and hello to all the newbies! I was only in work today and now I'm off on annual leave til next Tuesday yippeeeeeeeee! I am baby free tomorrow too, DS is going to nursery all day so I think I will go back to bed after I've dropped him at nursery Might actually try to do a bit of the garden too, the place is a jungle!

That's me 18+4 and still not really feeling babba move- anyone else still waiting on movements?

...and just for fun- for those who know what flavour your bump is, is it what you predicted? And what are your symptoms? Just to see if these old wifey tales are true and so I can keep trying to guess what my bump is!!!

JetLi · 24/02/2009 20:14

Evening all! Lots of fab news from everyone on the scans. Ours in on Friday this week 9am - have an awful sense of foreboding about it that I can't quite shake off...
Gillyan - you sound terrible - what did the Doc say today? Hope they can sort you out soon.
Is it me or are we a MASSIVE baby-booming list for July??? There seems to be loads of us!

london11 · 24/02/2009 20:21

Happy birthday hunny and congrats on your boy!

Phoenix thanks for redoing the list...not sure what I did to it but bold disappeared!

largeglassofred snap with the twin boys on the 9th! My offical finishing work date is 29th May. I am self employed so have arranged for work load to slowly decrease from beginning of April onwards.

Phoenix · 24/02/2009 20:45

London - You need to redo the asterisks to do the bold. But cos i'm so sad i have a Microsoft Word document saved on my laptop complete with bold asterisks

All the scan are coming thick and fast now. So exciting, we're almost/already halfway through

Patchybob · 25/02/2009 12:47

Hi, just a quicky...would any of you buy a second hand baby car seat. We have been given a quinny buzz travel system by a friend but the car seat is covered in mould (nice!) and not in great condition. I really don't want to spend a huge amount on a new car seat so unless I can get one from another friend was wondering about getting one from an NCT sale? Would you do it?

Mij · 25/02/2009 13:04

Gillyan I'm a tough old bird, I didn't even notice you said you didn't like Izzy, let alone be offended by it! First time around we were totally taken aback by the strength of people's reaction to name discussions, so we stopped talking about it, even with grandparents. DP and I started a shared document on the computer called 'Names we don't actively hate' so we didn't have to discuss it. Either of us could add names but neither could delete anything until we thought we'd both stopped adding them. Then, independently, we both went through the list crossing off anything we didn't like, and no arguments were allowed.

That left us with a passable shortlist to discuss! Anal, I know, but it worked .

Having said that, DP did get 'his' spelling of Isobel, as he had a much stronger opinion that I did, for a change.

DDs middle names are after family members, cos I really like that idea of that continuity. But that means we've committed to do the same thing for DC2 I guess...

If we have another girl, we have real trouble getting names to fit with our two surnames cos DPs ends in a 'y' sound and mine ends in an 'er/ah' sound, which if you're not particularly into rhyming names really reduces the field. SO many girls names I like end in an 'ee' or 'ah' sound.

JetLi · 25/02/2009 13:42

Hi Patchybob - I'm in a similar car-seat quandry. The general rule as I understand it, is not to have second hand car seats because I won't know whether they were previously in an accident or not (and so whether they've some hidden damage which would reduce their effectiveness if I were in an accident later). But friends have offered them to me and I figure that they will be OK as I know the source is good if you get my drift.
But then I found out that apparently the safety specs changed on the car seats in October 2008 which puts a different slant on things, in that the donated car seats may no longer be up to standard. Anyway, I decided I've got enough to worry about so I've firmly dropped the whole car seat issue into DP's lap with a view to him checking exactly what the October changes were and we'll take it from there I think.
Although when he'll exactly get around to doing the research is anyone's guess. DP has two speeds - slow and reverse.... and I think I asked him at Christmas....

Phoenix · 25/02/2009 13:55

Had my scan. All is fine . The sonographer has said 85% chance of it been a boy. He really wasn't sure and was looking for ages. He thinks he kept seeing a little willy . He said it was straight under my belly button and the sound waves don't pass through that so he was having to look from the side and that's why it wasn't clear. I don't if i dare take the risk of buying blue things

Mij · 25/02/2009 14:10

Patchybob - I don't think the NCT will sell car seats. Our local one won't, just like they won't take cot mattresses any more.

I guess it's a personal call - if you're sure of the source then it's probably fine (although you may need a new cover, by the sound of it!). Even if the spec changed in 2008, I'm not going to replace the one we had for DD (2006) so I'm not sure if that makes a massive difference. I guess you have to go with what feels right.

Phoenix - girls look great in blue Glad your scan went well.

mickeylou · 25/02/2009 16:18

Hello, havent been on here in ages! i am 18 weeks now but midwife thinks this is wrong as i palpate at 20 weeks. eh? very confusing as this would mean i was pregnant the cycle before. i was acually convinced i was pregnant in the october but had a negative test followed by what i thought was a period. who knows then - this baby is either due on the 25th july or the 11th july.

sickness has only just started to subside - except when overly tired when it rears ugly head again.

i went to the GP on monday as in agony in my lower back whenever i sit down, whilst i'm sitting down and when i stand up. i work at a desk so i'm pretty much in pain all day. she called it inflamation of the coexix and said only option is paracetamol and muscle rub and pretty much put up with it. ouch!

really looking forward to my scan on 10th march. whether it is a 20 or a 22 week scan is anyones guess!

hope everyone is ok. xxx

Gillyan · 25/02/2009 16:26

Hi guys, phoenix great scan news - no I wouldn't want to muy anything blue yet - I'm even a little wary as they can never tell for sure can they - we are having a 4D scan at about 28 weeks so I'll hold off till then.

jetli Doc said my ear infection is looking less severe but still there but won't give me more anti-biotics as had 2 courses now. I've now basically got flu - not quite as bad as full blown - but a horrid Virus all the same - I have slept ALL day today apart from waking up to sneeze. Everything in my head seems to be moving now so although i feel terriblt I'm hopeful that my body is at least trying to get it all out of my system.

mij I know what u mean about discussing names with others - I have had a few looks and comments when talking about names ands ome we really liked were blown out of the water by dfriends/relatives. I'm only telling u guys on here now - As far as I am concerned I have decided on the name Summer - but we're not telling it to anyone in RL. I am so crap at keeping secrets though but just don't want anyone's opinion.

ilkeyour Everyone kept telling me it was a boy as I've been so ill and it's not it's a girl. Also this pregnancy has been so different and again people were telling me a boy. I had a preference for a girl but didn't really have an idea.

I've lost my appetite and keep getting really full really quickly! I was enjoying the few weeks of ravenousness ( is that a word?) but not anymore.

ilikeyoursleeves · 25/02/2009 16:30

patchybob if it was me I'd buy a new car seat, I know they are pricey but for peace of mind and having your DC sit in a clean seat (!) I would do it. You just don't know its history (well, unless you trust your friend 100% and know it's not been in any accidents). Do you think you'd have any more DC's in future? If you do then a new car seat would last you for ages (we will be using DS's old one but he only came out of it in January and it's still in great nick).

Phoenix well done on your scan! That's frustrating that you can't be certain that it's a boy but it sounds like it is if the sonographer could see his wee boy bits!

Well today I had my day all to myself cos DS is in nursery, I was planning on doing SFA but I ended up.... washing / drying 2 loads of clothes, hoovering the whole house, making a fish pie for DS, did gardening for an hour and sorted out 2 boxes of stuff to take to the local jumble sale this weekend. I'm only getting my first cuppa now then will be collecting DS in an hour booooooooooooooooooooo... Oh, on a positive note I also lay in bed for an hour and watched the clouds go by so that was utter bliss

Misspaella · 25/02/2009 17:26

Congrats on the good scan results everyone.

Phoenix that does make me laugh...85% sure, eh? They should just say it's 50/50

I have been temping this week and shattered - working 10 hr days. A huge shock as it has been over 1 1/2 yrs since I last worked! On the plus side it is making the week really go fast which is good as have my 2nd scan on Friday (YAH!!!)

Re the car seats, DS's ones have been passed down to DD and it will be passed on again. We have never been in an accident so am assuming that is ok.

Well ladies I better get back to my temp job.

Patchybob · 25/02/2009 19:29

Thanks for all the advice on car seats, its a nightmare isn't it! I wouldn't have any worries getting one from a friend, except one covered in mould!

ilikeyoursleeves there will not be any more babies in this house! It took me 5 years to pursuade DH to have a third child! For that reason we gave all of our baby stuff away and I think the girl I gave it all to got rid of it when she was finished. Hence having the expense of starting again and knowing it will only be for 1 baby.

Misspaella I wouldn't hesitate using the same car seat for all your children, you know that it hasn't been damaged in any way.

mij its been a while since I went to an NCT sale but at the last one I went to they had loads of car seats ( I was quite surprised which is why I remember) Maybe they have changed the rule since then (that was probably about 3 years ago)

Gillyan You poor poor thing, I can't believe what a horrible time you are having. Hope you are on the mend soon. Take it really easy though and don't overdo it.

Anyway, still jealous of all those scans! Seeing the midwife tomorrow though which will be reassuring. xx

Beccabump · 25/02/2009 20:25

Hello ladies!

After some advice please!!!

I have come down with DD's cold and have an awful hacking, tickly, irritating cough that has got so bad today that I have vomited a few times from the force of it and is so body-wracking that my poor pelvic floor is really struggling!! (TMI sorry!!)

Spoke to my mw and she suggested everything I am already doing - honey and lemon linctus, lots of fluids and rest, but I was wondering if any of you had any great remedies out there? I am pretty much up for trying everything now as I ache all over and keep getting paranoid I will burst my waters or ping the baby out somehow!!

Help!

xxx

I felt the baby kick today for the first time!!!! 18 weeks + 5. It was really really faint - like finger tips really but as this is my second I knew what it was. So happy. Don't think I'd have known the first time so don't lose hope if you've not felt anything yet.

hey mickeylou you could be due on the same day as me ... and we have scans on the same day. It seems so far off and I can't wait!

Patchyblob we've been given car seats from best friend and SIL - two from each so really lucky. One was really well used so the seat cover was shredded but I bought a new cover on ebay for a tenner. You could do that and give the seat itself a really good bleaching scrub and rinse - and the fumes will be well off it by the time the baby came to use it. You probably won't be able to buy a car seat at the NCT as they don't allow it - well they don't at the one I volunteer at.

Patchybob · 26/02/2009 12:32

BonzoDoodah I suggested that to the girl who is lending us all the stuff as I had seen really good covers on internet. She is a bit more precious than me and said she wouldn't consider putting a new baby in it! I don't want to appear really tight by saying "just give me the damm car seat" ! She says they are going to dump it so maybe I should just stalk her to the dump!!!

Great news about feeling the baby kick! Its such a joy isn't it. I am 20 weeks tomorrow and over the last few days have been feeling it quite a bit. Just off to see the midwife so get to hear it for the first time in a while! xx

BonzoDoodah · 26/02/2009 13:41

It is lovely feling the kicking. You start to feel more connected with the baby as a real thing don't you.

Difficult one with the car seat - I thought she'd already given it to you.
Could you say you'd pass it on to a charity - and then clean it up and get a new cover and she'd never know it was hers?

Misspaella · 26/02/2009 13:57

Bonzo I totally agree about feeling more connected w/the baby. I am now 21 + 3 (not that I am counting ) and this little bean is making his/her presence known. I love this bit!

Makes me sad that is my last time though. 3 is our limit...

woollyjo · 26/02/2009 14:06

Careful what you wish for ladies ..... in the last 3 months I didn't get a full night's sleep as dd did the rumba between 2 and 5am most days. Once DH asked me not to snuggle so close as all the movement was waking him up!!

This one is shaping up the same (fidgety girls)where as before I could only feel her if I was still but now it it pretty much anytime.

Just wait until you can feel their hiccups, dd's drove me to distraction!

maidinamerica · 26/02/2009 15:43

I'm torn about wanting to feel the baby. On the one hand I guess it's the only positive sign that everything's OK that I get in between scans (totally paranoid due to miscarriages). On the other hand I guess once it starts it doesn't stop and drives you insane - unless the kicking stops for a while and then you start panicking again ! Frankly I've already got so much pain from the fibroids (managable but a constant nag) that I guess the baby won't make any difference either way.

alibobble · 26/02/2009 16:55

Hi everyone. Was on mumsnet 2 1/2yrs ago with DD 1 but am P again with no 2 due 17th July so thought I'd pop in again. Will prob be sporadic as don't get much computer time with a LO on the go (she knows how to put the computer in sleep mode when she's had enough of me on here!)

congrats to people. Just had my 20wk scan. Very exciting, not finding out what we're having but all ok.

Ali x

Misspaella · 26/02/2009 16:59

Woolly that made me laugh about your DH being kicked too. I never had the problem during my last 2 pg....I tell what kept me awake having to use the loo and finding myself stuck on my back trying to role over to another position.

Congrats Ali

Maidinamerica I am sure all will be fine.
