Hope no-one minds me kicking this one off - 39 pages seemed a bit unmanageable!

Had 20 week scan today. Tiddler unco-operative to start with (although not as bad as DD was - took 3 goes to see everything) and it looks like most of the bits are in the right places. Decided right at the very last minute not to find out the sex. Realised that, if DD thinks she's going to have a sister, that nothing, not even photographic evidence, will change her mind anyway. So stuck with the 'don't ask don't tell' as per first time around and will just have to wait to sort out all the sodding clothes 'til we know what we've got.

Although... What do gonads look like on a scan?! Got a very good look at the hips from underneath, so to speak, and thought I saw two little bright spots, but that could be the sitting bones of course. Anyone tell me what the crown jewels look like on a scan?!

BonzoDoodah · 23/02/2009 17:41

hunny what a nightmare. I hope your BF isn't aggressive when he's had a drink. If he is then seriously consider whether you want to be with him. Aggressive men tend to get more violent after babies are born. My poor sister had a partner who drank a lot. She had to insist he never drank cider as he was violent after it. He was worse when her DD was born. In the end they had to split up as he was being really violent and also in front of the children. I'd hate this to happen to someone else. As someone else said - it sounds like ultimatum time. Get him to address his drink problem (join aa or have counselling or something)or tell him he's got to take a back seat away from you. You don't need the stress. And although two parents are better than one - two fighting parents are terrible for a child and can cause damage. (big hugs to you)

lydiathetattooedlady · 23/02/2009 18:08

hunny your boyfirend sounds like a wee bit of a shit, but like you say he's greiving and he might get better, however it does seem until this happens maybe a bit of time alone will make him realise what he's missing!
have managed to convince dp to find out the sex yippee! but we'll pretend we dont know to everyone else.
our names that we like are Beabea for a girl (named afterdp's french nana-ish!) she's a beatrix but this is her nickname and i love it, it will be to go with my dd esme, which i think are quite nice together! although people will prob say its silly!
for a boy we like benedict, but shorten it to ned, i really really want Rufus but dp had put his foot down, ho hum i may change his mind!
hope evryones ok anyway, feeling strong kicks from baby, 20 weeks tomorrow but two weeks til scan grrr!

lydiathetattooedlady · 23/02/2009 18:26

activityapple i looooove the name sidney but dp vitoed it!

Mij · 23/02/2009 19:37

I'm finding names the second time round much harder cos I now come across so many other kids with names I previously liked, but now there are either too many of them or the kids are vile and so have spoilt that name for me! Teacher's must have a terrible time choosing names for their kids - almost every name must come with a preconception from some child or other they've taught.

OP posts:
EvieBear · 23/02/2009 19:48

Activityapple- love all your names, it's so weird - they are along the lines and style of the names I am looking at too! I am kind of settled on Finlay for a boy now, I think it's fab. Noah and Reuben are gorgeous too. I also have Conor, Theo and Eneas (pronounced Ennis) on my list. I like Oscar but I am not sure it's me if you know what I mean...

For girls I have:

Eva
Freya - is my fave I think...
Niamh
Carla
Tara
Cara
Amelia
Emilia

It's tough though, and I'm sure I'll change my mind again...

EvieBear · 23/02/2009 19:49

Oops I meant Phoenix above, not Activityapple!!!

xxhunnyxx · 23/02/2009 20:31

Thanks everyone for your kind words. With regards to us havin some time apart for him to realise what he's missing we've already done this. We split up at new year and I just left him alone until he came crawling back a couple of weeks ago, again, full of promises but then things just seem to have gone back to how they were!
Bonzo no he isn't ever agressive towards me, I know he has been in fights in the past but I've never witnessed it. But sayin that I think it's something which he could be capable of. My Dad used to hit my Mum so it's something that I'm terrified of and would never stand for it.

QueenFee · 23/02/2009 21:06

hunny hope things get better for you. I would speak to the gp as he may be able to put you in touch with organisations who may be able to help.

As for names I usually get the name of whichever sex the baby is 1st bizarrlely
My 1st was Cerys but we didn't have a boys name till the end
My 2nd was Finlay and were were still discussing girls names when he was born!
This time round I have have my girls name Isla Grace and we and umming and ahhing over the boys name poss Ewan or Alfie at the mo.

ilikeyoursleeves · 23/02/2009 21:30

Hunny sorry to see that things are tough with your BF just now, hopefully things will settle but he really needs to address his drink problem. He is just putting it off, 'getting it out of his system' sounds like an excuse to me and having a baby is one of the most stressful life events and if alcohol is his coping mechanism he really needs to address this now! I know easier said than done but he needs to face up to his responsibilities, and if he isn't prepared to put his baby and you first then it should be the door for him.... Keep us posted on how you are doing and take care of yourself.

Re names, if babba is a girl we are calling her Milly (not many up here in Scotland but it seems more popular down south?) and I haven't a scooby what to call baby if it's a boy! I think we will try to find out at the next scan (not til 28 weeks Grrrrrr) but as it's the NHS thay might not tell us. Poo.

LargeGlassofRed · 23/02/2009 21:42

really struggling with names too, my other dc's are Oscar, Mia and Libby.
I love Stanley, Arthur, Sidney. but Dp hates them all
Finding 2 boys names that go together and we both like is going to be fun!

Beccabump · 23/02/2009 21:59

Hello

Struggling with 2nd names here. DD was always going to be Lucie Ann, and if she had been a boy, George Peter.

With DC2 we have chosen the 1st names but are completely stuck on 2nd.

If DC2 is a girl she will be Evelyn (known as Evie) and if DC2 is a boy he will be Isaac.

I quite like Evelyn Mae but (oops!) haven't discussed that with hubby yet! Boys middle names - no idea!!! By the way our surname starts with S to trying to avoid funny initials!

As for the usual update - crazy times really! DH is away with work for 3 days, so had planned lots of lovely things to do with DD. Going out visiting mainly with nursery Tues morning. Typically she came down with raging conjunctivitis on Saturday and as she has had to go on drops for it today we can't go and see anyone as she is still infectious!!!!! So pretty much stuck here until DH gets home from his oh so hard work trip ! Will try to take a walk tomorrow but it depends on how the SPD is. Got some seeds that need sowing so have that down on the list and also some crafty things to do - but poor child is so fed up as she can't go and see her friends and we are usually out everyday!!

At least today she was very tolerant of the drops even though they sting like mad, and was generally lovely and well behaved

Off to grab a nights sleep in a king size all to myself!!!

Love to all xxx

Phoenix · 23/02/2009 22:06

My ds is Lewis James. To add to our struggle to find a girls name we like our surname is C-- ie. very long, 3 sylablle and a lot of names don't go or are too long

rubyriley · 23/02/2009 22:43

Had my 20 week scan today (20+5)& all well here too. Suspect as had already had a CVS that the sonographer wasn't particularly looking for soft markers; she didn't mention nuchal fold but ticked off the usual, 2 legs, 2 arms, heart examined, liver etc. Really funny though that whilst I was lying down for the scan, baby was sitting bolt upright (isn't that weird?!) Like, with his head by my belly button, sitting on my spine!!

Phoenix Good luck with your scan on Wednesday; enjoy seeing your little one for those precious seconds.

Baby names are very personal choices aren't they? We struggled as there's always someone one of us knew who we didn't want our son named after!! I feel a gap in the market for new names

Patchybob · 24/02/2009 11:01

Hello everyone and congratulations to those of you who have already had your scans. So exciting. Mine isn't till next week and it is very tempting to find out the sex, but don't think we will. Quite envious of all of you who know though!

hunny so sorry you are having a rough time of it. Sounds like a nightmare. At the end of the day you have to do what is right for you and the baby. Hope you manage to sort it all out.

We had a lovely few days away in Wales. Saw some of Dh family and stayed with some really good friends and their 4 kids (that was an eye opener!!) Good to be home though.

I am finally rid of my chest infection and must be feeling better as I am on a bit of a spring cleaning mission!! Really need to sort this house out before I get too big!!

Have a good day everyone xxx

xxhunnyxx · 24/02/2009 11:35

Well I had the scan this morning, was still umming and ahhring over whether to find out the sex but at the last minute I gave in and asked...and....it's a BOY!!!
We would have been equally as pleased either way but it has made me really excited. BF is really pleased too.
It's also my birthday today so BF is taking me out for a meal tonight, he's in a good mood now so I'm gonna calmly talk to him about things, we're both in possitive moods and we'll be in a restaurant so hopefully there wont be any arguments! (fingers crossed)
Think I'm gonna take a trip down to Mamas & Papas / Next this afternoon and buy something blue!! It's so exciting!! )

Gillyan · 24/02/2009 11:37

mij I feel really bad for saying I don't like Izzy - I actually do but my friend has little girl called Isobelle and she's an Izzy so thats why I don't want it. Good point about being able to vary names - I think it would be nice for little one to be able to vary her name if she wanted but I'd be more bothered about other people doing it.

I actually think I have decided what I want to call her now - I'll probably end up changing my mind but I really like Summer! DP does too!.

Off to DR's AGAIN at 2pm to see why I still feel like I have flu and am living under water even after 2 courses of anti biotics. Never ever felt so poorly in all my life - shivering, sweating, sore throat, ear ache, being sick etc. I woke up at 4am this morning feeling so ill I got Dp up and he's taken the day off work to look after DD. We'll see what Doc says this time.

Congrats on scan results guys xx

BonzoDoodah · 24/02/2009 12:24

lydia-ttl I've been contemplating Beatrix too .. my DD is Matilda and it goes really well - both old names and not too popular (at the moment). Other than that we have another girl's name but hubby and I are arguing on the spelling - he want's Scottish spelling (clumsy to me) and I want old-English (he hates) sigh. Boy's name is sorted though. Phew. (Last time for a girl we really likes Natasha and Jemima but have gone off them now).

Gillyan - sounds a bit grim - hope Doc can sort you out.
hunny - have a lovely meal and a good chat x

KitCat26 · 24/02/2009 13:08

Hi, can I join in? I'm due with my first baby on 27th July (17+6). 20wk scan is booked for 10 March which seems ages away, but we won't find out the sex -if we can resist the temptation!

Not sure about names as yet, perhaps Eleanor (& shortening to Ella/Ellie) or Emily for a girl but dh and I are really struggling with boys names.

We thought we'd start looking at names in the family tree just for inspiration- my granddad was called Melville and we found a great aunt called Bertile, dh's gran was called Zella and the rest are quite Edwardian. We ruled all of those out though

Acceber · 24/02/2009 13:34

Hello all - not been here in a while and can't stay long as am in work so sorry if I have missed any news.

Just need to share that I had my 20 week scan today and it was amazing. I was convinced I was having a boy but have been told it's a little girl!!!

DH and I have decided to tell people that we didn't find out so everyone will be suprised!

I am on cloud 9!

maidinamerica · 24/02/2009 13:50

xxhunnyxx: I'm so sorry that your BF is giving you a hard time; you really don't need this at this time. Happy to hear your parents are so supportive but wish I could give you a big hug; find one enclosed with this post. Hope he starts being more supportive and consistent soon. Maybe it's just an unconcious reaction to the thought of becoming a parent and he'll settle down. I had a bit of this with DH during the last pregnancy. He seemed determined to prove he was still a 'lad' and started going out all the time and upped his smoking and drinking. Snapped out of it when I had a miscarriage and he's being much more sensitive and supportive this time. Congrats on having a boy; just concentrate on looking after yourself and your little boy. And Happy Birthday ! Enjoy it.

mij: thanks for the kind words. We've made an offer to one who's currently working as a maternity nurse and she's great. Very down to earth and practical with loads of experience. 31 so I won't end up being her mum too and she'll have her own life when not on duty. I think she's going to take it and we just have to sit down and discuss the contract and ground rules.

Spoke to the ObGyn yesterday and he said less than 5% chance of delivering as early as 30 weeks but over 50% chance of being 4 - 5 weeks early. If he's right then bang goes my plan to have 3 weeks off beforehand and my very expensive tickets to see Springsteen. Sure I won't care if it happens but for now ... drat !

We've started discussing names. Can't beleive we've finally got this far ! DH likes quite fancy names with Allegra (his favourite), Madison, Melissa and Mallory. I don't hate them but I think they're a bit fashionable and I don't like any of the diminutives of Ally, Maddy, Mel or Mal (completely agree with you Gillyan). The only one I like is Isobel and Izzy - DH has really dull surname and these go really well. Now I have to find a way to make it his idea ...

My mum told DH that she's about to start shopping for me for the baby. Great but my mum has truly awful taste and is never very practical - I spent my entire childhood in thick, scratchy bright tweed and everything smocked. So have to leap on this. Going to try and pull together a list of things I actually need and then ask her to accompany me shopping. Cunning !

Happy Shrove Tuesday everyone. Will be going home to eat 50 pancakes tonight.

Cheekycel · 24/02/2009 14:07

Hello all,

Mind if I join? Im due 28/7 and scan is booked for 4 March, next week, and will def be finding out the sex! Really excited to meet my little one
