Heebychick · 20/02/2009 20:15

Yes lovely huh! Makes a change for the government to give us without testing our income etc.

wanabe as spats says the nuchal fold is a test (sometimes called the triple test) where they test for the risk factor of having a baby with Downs (or other abnormalities) They will do 3 things usually:

Measure the width of the baby's neck
Take a blood test
Look for the development of the nasal bone (as babies with Downs develop this nasal bone later in the pregnancy.

Then they assess what risk these results bring up and add it to your age risk (every woman has a certain risk depending on your age) and give you a 1 in XXX chance of having a baby with Downs.

The scan for the nasal bone and neck measurement has to be done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days (or something similar) so as Spats says if you want to have this done you should talk to your midwife about recomendations for a local private one or maybe just having the blod test done, if the risk is high you should be offered further tests anyway.

HTH xx

Pezzina · 22/02/2009 19:44

Spats - I got mine from Amazon. Just type in ANGELSOUNDS FETAL DOPPLER and it should come back with a few suggestions. Mine cost £31. Well worth the money.

Pezzina · 22/02/2009 19:46

Hi Nelix - yes a huge relief

I too think the time is flying by. Nearly March already - Spring is on her way at last.

A quick question for C1ndy - did you keep going with the Diet Chef stuff and just supplement ? Am interested to hear what you think. I started the Cambridge Diet today - think I will cope on it for a while, especially if the weight loss is good, but it will be a nightmare if I stay with it for more than a few weeks. Am secretly hoping I'll get a BFP in 3 weeks time and have to stop, but stop over a stone lighter as apparently the average weight loss in the first 3 weeks is a stone - fantastic

spats · 23/02/2009 16:34

I have got a new scan dte which is next Weds, can't wait to see if everthing is OK. Time seems to be flying by but my weeks aren't!!! I am waiting for the magic 12. Only 1 week to go though. Mind you i don't want this pg to fly by as baby is due in Sept when my DS2 has to start school and i want him at home with me forever!!!
Cindy - i feel sick all day and it gets worse in afternoon. Had this with other 2 but not as bad. I have found chewing gum helps alot, especially in morning, not so much in pm like now when i feel like retching.

WHo is first due with their babe on this thread? We should start a list as i am lost as to where we are.

Spats due date 15.9.09 (tbc with scan!)

Add yourself and we can see where we all are. x

smileycat · 23/02/2009 21:47

Good evening all you pregnant ladies
Had my nuchal scan today it lasted over an hour but all is well, baby is very healthly & jumping around like its on a trampoline. The sonagrapher kept saying naughty baby keep still I can't get a good look at you. She made me drink a bottle of full fat coke for the sugar & jump up & down on the spot for ages so that the baby would move into a good position for the scan, it seemed to work. As it was co-operating with her it meant that it took an hour to do & we got to see the baby on the screen for all that time, its amazing how much it has grown from 8wks to now.

She gave me about 7 pictures 2 of them its sucking its thumb, in one you can clearly see an ear & another you can see the brain amazing

She gave me a new due date 04/09/09 instead of the one they gave me at the dating scan 09/09/09 & the new one matches exactly with my dates, so I am very happy about that as I think I know my body better now then they do

I'll post the new pics once I've scanned them in

Spats due date 15.9.09 (tbc with scan!)

Jools I did stick to the Diet Chef for another two weeks when I found out I was pg but only took my folic acid and ensured I had fruit and veg with the food that was given. But as soon as the nausea set in I just started to have a proper breakfast loads of fruit for snacks and a lunch and dinner... I eat before 7pm as I get really nauseous (is that how you spell it?) so have lost weight not intentionally. Good luck with the Cambridge diet, are you on the full food source? or are you including food too?

Joolsiam · 24/02/2009 09:22

Thanks C1ndy Were the meals nice ? I guess they must have been OK if you lasted for 2 weeks - well done Day 1 of the Cambridge Diet seemed OK - it IS quite brutal, but by all accounts most people manage to lose a stone in 2 - 3 weeks, which is just the sort of boost I need. I'm doing the Sole Source Plus - so three sachets of "stuff" and the ones I've had so far taste OK, and a small 200 calorie meal - last night was grilled chicken and asparagus !

The cooking made me grumpy though - I can't really cook as DP usually does it all and I get really stressed if I have to do anything in the kitchen. I was so grumpy, BD was out of the question - must try harder tonight

Heebychick · 24/02/2009 10:03

Hi all,

Thought i'd add myself to this list, i put it on top as it looked to be in date order, hope that's ok?

How is everyone? i'm sorry you are feeling rotten cindy i hope the sickness doesn't last long, have you bought sick bands - the travel sickness bands from Boots? they were the only thing for me, oh and nibbling constantly - it helps to keep your sugar levels up.

I feel a bit hot and bothered today, i went to a concert on Sunday and nearly passed out with the heat, this pg really feels less robust - if that makes sense? i feel like any little thing will make me feel rotten and i'm exhausted all the time! i have promised myself that i am going to go swimming tonight and try to get some light fitness regime going, i feel terribly unfit this time around and i'm sure that makes such a difference - i wish i'd followed nelix's lead and been good from the start!

anyone else feel like this?

Hey everyone hows it going? Aw heeby i have not been to the gym in 2 weeks we have all been bogged down with a horrendous cold so not really been up to it but going back tomorrow.

c1ndy sickness is horrid but its meant to mean good strong hormones. Its such a bitter sweet feeling isn't it? Makes you feel awful but you know your baby is doing all the right things! A positive thing

A list hoorah!.....though I don't like being first!!! having nightmares!!!! I am due in a maximum of 14 weeks....that takes me to 41 and here I would be induced then. Kinda of cool to know but OMG the fear of pain is so getting to me! eeeek

Hi lovely ladies,

Smiley so glad your scan went well - thats great news! Your due date is the day before mine - so very close .

My DH just called me - the Nuchal test results came back by post today and we're over the moon. Our risk is 1:9,500 - so super low.

Heeby I have been feeling really tired and uninspired to do any form of exercise over the past four weeks and have felt really bad because of it. I now try to do just 15 mins on the x-trainer four times a week following by some toning exercises and after finding it really hard to stay motivated to begin with I'm now really enjoying it and feel so much better. I would definitely try and fit some exercise in if you can - it really does make a difference.

Hello,

Thanks pezz great that you are feeling a bit better and enjoying the enercise, i know you are right, i was super fit with my first and felt tons better than this one. Promise to go swimming tonight!
Great news about your nuchal result too - well done.

nelix wow 14 weeks - that's not long eh. How are measurements going etc, do you think you have a big girl or a small girl?! It all helps with the pain apparently (talking as someone who had a 10lb baby girl!)

WanabeMum · 24/02/2009 13:10

Hey ladies,

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to speak to my midwife about the Nuchal scan.
I had my dating scan yesterday and they put me back almost a week which i know is wrong as i'm definite about my dates! They told me I'm now 9 weeks yesterday whereas according to my dates I am 10 weeks tomorrow.
Anyway, all is well baby was there (just the 1) with a lovely strong heartbeat. Apparently they can offer you a dating scan anywhere between 8 & 14 weeks. My new EDD is now 28/09/2009 which I'm most disgruntled about as I feel it's wrong.
They didn't seem that bothered about a nuchal scan and it wasn't mentioned when i met my midwife. I'll definitely have to phone her i think to put my mind at rest as I'm not due to see her until I'm 16 weeks for the down's blood test.

Heebychick · 24/02/2009 13:48

wanabe don't be blue about your date scan, with my first i was told that according to my early scan (i thought i was 7 weeks) they told me i was in fact 4.5 weeks - which when i got home i worked out i'd have concieved the day after i found out i was pg!!! so they are not always acurate, a later scan pushed me on 2 weeks after all that.

I would speak about the nuchal with your midwife and it may be worth paying privately - after all it's not up to them to be bothered about a nuchal (cheeky gits - like it's their choice anyway!!), if you want one i am sure you should be entitled to one.

Pezzina · 24/02/2009 15:56

Wanabe I agree with Heeby about speaking with your midwife about the Nuchal scan. It should be your decision if you want to get one. Your midwife should definitely advise you where you can get one.

SparkyMalarky · 24/02/2009 18:32

"ello ladies, sorry I haven't posted in a while...the weeks seem to be flying by

wanabe - sounds like its definitely worth asking about the nuchal. Do you think the MW is more reticent about it because of the down blood test you're getting? I don't think the scan is offered everywhere yet...some places don't even get a scan until 20 weeks apparently

pezz - you must be so relieved about the results...great news

C1ndy - how's the MS? Mine had almost entirely gone by 13 weeks...but it's so exhausting when you're in the middle of it, yet reassuring as heeby said!

smiley glad you had such a lovely scan - we get a very strict 3 pictures from each scan where I am...and you have to pay £3 to get those...it's very strange to think I might not get another scan, so the next time i will see the baby is when it arrives..

[Waves to nelix, jools and spats too]

All good with me, am almost 29 weeks and starting to feel a bit like an exhausted weeble. Bump suddenly spouted a week ago - last week someone said, "not long then" and I had to say..."well, 12 weeks actually". I felt like a right heffer!!

Have to decide whether I want a VBAC or another ELCS in the next few weeks too. Am really torn, my CS was fine, but I felt rough afterwards, and I'm not sure how I'd cope afterwards with a boisterous just 3 yr old and a newborn. On the plus side, I do like to organise, so a CS would be perfect!!

Have updated the list below...Nelix - you're not first any more - eek!!

(v funny that there are 3 of us due on the 15th...just 2 months apart each time!)

Heebychick · 24/02/2009 21:42

sparky great to hear from you, i am thinking exactly the same as you, i like the idea of having everything organised and being able to put DD into nursery or to MIL and know there won't be any pressure, panic, rush, unknown, worry etc. But at the same time i'm worried about the recovery, but TBH i am still aiming for the ELCS - i am having an appointment with the consultant tomorrow to talk through options so will know more tomorrow. Also my Dr says that unless i have a huge urge to have a VBAC then go for the CS, you know what you are getting and just ensure you have the support network around you.

Plus there are other areas to get 'ruined' just as much!

Ps i swam 20 lengths tonight - then stuffed pancakes (deserved ones tho) feel so good for going!

WanabeMum · 25/02/2009 12:17

Hello ladies,

Sparky i can't believe you are 29 weeks!! That's so strange, doesn't seem that long ago you had your BFP!!

I will phone my midwife to discuss the nuchal scan and find out how to get one, even if i have to pay! I know there is a clinic in Cardiff that does them privately so may consider that if all else fails. To be honest i think they just do the bloods here and work it out on your age. No-one seems to know what a nuchal scan is when i've been asking people! Plus a friend of mine who lives in Swansea had a 12 week scan but wasn't allowed to have a picture so has to wait until her 20 week scan for that. Whereas i had several pictures of my scan at 9 weeks!!

Well done heeby on the swimming. I started yoga last week so will be going every Thursday and hopefully going to bring in a weekly swim too. Have to try and keep some small level of fitness or i'll never cope! lol
