momino DS was 2 in august... he doesn't go to nursery but is due to start some pre-school sessions from next easter.

Just had a thought... is a doula for just normal delivery.. i would love the chance at a VBAC. I wonder if they'd still be my support is I ended up having another CS?

Momino · 05/11/2008 13:29

i think a doula is for any birth: vbac, natural, c section. not sure though. that's a great idea.

Moonlit · 05/11/2008 13:44

RE Nuchal Scans - Most primary care trusts don't offer this scan between 11 and 13 weeks because it's quite expensive. Unfortunately it's always about the money. In my primary care trust 2.5 years ago, we paid 100 pounds to have this done at a NHS hospital by a specialist in the field. Luckily this time around the Nuchal scan is being offered on the NHS. Basically the Nuchal scan measures the fluid in the neck. This indicates the probability of Downs Syndrome etc in the 'baby'. A normal scanner can only tell you basic information (which of course is important to), number of babies, confirm the EDD or give you a more accurate EDD according to the babies size and of course how many babies there are. If you are offered a dating and Nuchal scan count your lucky stars!

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 13:58

moonlit my MW this am said that EDD dates confirmed by nuchal scans are very often more accurate... may be more advanced scanning equipment? I was offered a dating scan yesterday but as we had our nuchal scan the day before on monday I didn't see the point in going as they confirmed all nes dates would have been confirmed the day before... although if it had been next week I would probably still have kept it just to get another look see at the LO

Yay! my Seraphine maternity jeans have just arrived... much to my surprise. I phoned yesterday to check if they'd come in yet to be told they'd be a few more weeks! The best bit is I ordered the right size (wasn't sure what to go for) and they're a great fit, no saggy bum and soooo comfy. Just tried them on and they're staying on

pulapula · 05/11/2008 14:05

yes, i think a doula will basically stay with you whatever birth you plan/end up with. you pay for the support, which should also cover a bit of support before, and more importantly afterwards (looking after older children, cooking meals etc). worth investigating fikelly, given your situation.

I had a planned cs last time, and basically DD went to nursery for the day (worth you seeing if your DS can get a pre-school place on the day if you do decide a cs), and DH picked her up at 5pm and brought her to see us, and then we put her in extra days that week so that DH could visit us and manage the house). will probably do the same this time.

Jael · 05/11/2008 14:15

I had my 12 week scan almost 2 weeks ago, it wasn't a nuchal scan though, I haven't been offered one, I never had one with my daughter either (she's 2 1/2) I'm having a blood test testing for downs in two weeks though. Should I be looking at a private nuchal scan? I'm quite confused.

Jael X

Jools1 · 05/11/2008 14:33

Jael - in my area, they only offer the triple test (bloods) so I'd have to go private for a nuchal fold scan.

The MW said that both will give similar results, but the triple test normally takes place later than a nuchal scan. People often opt for the nuchal in case there is a bad result as they would rather take action sooner.

If you have a nuchal fold scan, they normally do the blood tests aswell, so you end up with a combined risk score - I would guess that means more accurate but don't know for sure.

I'm not sure I'm going to have either test

Moonlit · 05/11/2008 14:45

Jael - I didn't realise they could test for Down Syndrome with just a blood test. My Primary Care trust offers a Nuchal scan with a combined blood test. Which apparently gives more accurate results. We would have gone for a Nuchal scan whether or not we had to pay for it, because my DH has a history of genetic diseases in his family.

FiKelly - You are absolutely right, I was going to say the same thing as a side note. The Nuchal scanner is far more advanced and would give a more accurate EDD. I always annoy the sonographers with these questions and read about it on the net, it's just the nerd me

mags98 · 05/11/2008 15:12

I'm having a seperate scan as the nuchal one is private, it is not offered as standard in this area.

So I had the standard booking scan, and then am paying for the other one and the combined scan/ blood testing next week.

The combined test of nuchal scan is a lot more accurate than the blood test alone - which is very innacurate - and also done earlier. The NHS bloods are done at 16-18 weeks, take a couple of weeks for the result, then if you need an amniocentis that takes longer still - so by the time a diagnosis is finally made you might be 22 weeks or more. Very very difficult decision then (well always difficult, but worse than at 12 weeks).

I am back from my scan today and have been dated as 12+2 weeks.

My hospital does offer the combined test which is the most accurate type of screening test at 80%. However didn't have the nuchal or the blood test done either. DH not happy as he thinks at 41 I should have had it done but I wouldn't have any diagnostic tests done so no point really imo.

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 16:50

we had to pay for our combined nuchal scan and blood test. not free here either.

definitely going to do more research on doulas see if it solves our birth plan dilemmas..

dandy know how you feel! i won't go into any details of our experience last time either with all our first timers here.

Hi all,
still having boob pain but a bit less today. My stomach has definitely changed shape - someone in work made a comment about my weight today so I think there's been gossiping going on!

My scan is next Weds when I'll be 12+6 I can't wait. As long as everything is ok (fingers crossed) I'm going to make it official with work. I have to give an estimated leaving date. Any advice when did/does everyone plan to work up to? I was thinking of trying for 36/37 weeks to give me as much time with the babs as poss.

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 17:12

dandy my only local friend that ds sees and plays with her ds on a regular basis is expecting #2 in march. i know a few other girls from post natal classes with ds but they work shifts around their dc's sometimes day sometimes night. i don't see them so often because of this.. just don't want ds to feel abandoned.

daizydoo · 05/11/2008 17:58

Has anyone elses 'morning sickness'got worse? Its getting really bad in the evenings and today going round the supermarket was awful. Its frustrating, seen as I'm over 12 weeks I was hoping it would die down not get worse!! Looks like its going to be 16weeks before I feel vaguely human again, like last time!

I do feel guilty moaning as I heard yesterday that a good friend of my has miscarried. She was due on the same day as me

agooboo · 05/11/2008 18:02

FiKelly, Have you thought about a home birth - that way you wouldn't need to find anyone to look after LO. Your DH would be about in the house with him. Just a thought.

agooboo · 05/11/2008 18:02

Oh, and if it is at night, LO would be in bed.

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 19:00

agooboo i wanted a home birth last time but due to circumstances out with my control i ended up with an emergency cs. now because of last time i have to go under consultant led care which means hospital. not even able to do local midwife led centre.. they won't have me! would have loved a home birth..

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 19:03

daisydoo i'm still suffering with all day nausea. mine got worse last time just before it went altogether at 14wks. think i'm going to be same this time too.

pulapula · 05/11/2008 19:44

My MS has got worse (now 11 weeks) after pretty much disappearing in week 9. No throwing up but feel sick and tired and am really moody/grumpy/fed up.

However, I take it as a good sign, along with my expanding tummy, my calcium cravings (mmm laughing cow cheese triangles), and my constipation. Only 2 days til scan now...

FiKelly · 05/11/2008 20:15

dandy re our previous experiences... there is a birth trauma thread here on mumsnet.. I wouldn't advise our 1st timers read it but my story of DS birth is there for anyone who wants to know. It's the birth trauma support thread... i'm not posting the link so 1st timers won't be tempted to have a peek without thinking about it first!

MrsEvs · 05/11/2008 20:25

I'm a day off 11 weeks too and am feeling sicker than ever and more tired - am so ready to be feeling better! It went on til 5 months with DD2 - really hoping it's not that long this time

MrsEvs · 05/11/2008 20:27

Not to mention I now have the dreaded 'roids from the constipation - sorry if tmi!

runningmonkey · 05/11/2008 20:28

Yes I'm suffering with nausea too, It went away for about a week but is back. Its worst in the afternoons between about 3 and 5pm.

Fi Thank you for being so lovely and protective of us innocent first timers
