Thought I'd better start the thread since a) I've never done it before b) I'm not actually in labour right now c) it'll take all the 9 remaining posts on the previous thread to get the link to this one done correctly!

making me hungry! whats boston beans please?

Pidge · 02/10/2008 12:03

JennyL - yes, the plus side for you is you get to meet someone who might deliver your baby. So look at it as a bonus. These things do apparently run in families to some extent - my mum was late with both my brother and me. I think it's much easier for me to be relaxed about it 3rd time round too. In many ways I'm not even considering my due date to be until this weekend. I would have been soooo shocked to have this one early!

eandz - oooh I love cheesecake - I alternate between my 3 fave Nigella recipes - pumpkin, London and New York! Can't believe you're managing to bake with a tiny baby. I'm fitting it all in now whilst my life is one of leisure!! I have just been licking the bowl clean of the caramel for my millionaire's shortbread!

plusonemore - boston beans is this fab and easy recipe - basically just beans in a tomato sauce, but you throw in a bit of sugar, lemon juice and some coarse grain mustard. You can use tinned beans, but I had some dried ones, which I soaked and cooked first. We'll have half this batch on baked potatoes with grated cheddar on top. Then freeze the rest for after the baby arrives and we have no time to cook.

eandz · 02/10/2008 12:20

if i don't at least do one productive thing a day i'll go crazy and my dh accidentally threw away ALL of my oil paints because they were covered in a trash bag so he thought they were trash, so i can't paint...all i have left to do is bake.

hmm your boston beans recipe sounds interesting. i think i'll go see if i have the ingredients to try it out.

all of you

seriously hurry up and join us on the postnatal thread. i'm missing you!

Pidge · 02/10/2008 12:38

boston beans recipe goes roughly like this

1 very large onion
1 clove garlic
juice of 1 lemon
2 450g tins of beans (e.g. pinto, soya, borlotti, haricot, whatever you fancy really, a mixture is nice) Or some dried, soaked COOKED beans - I guessed a quantity roughly equivalent to two tins.
2 tsp brown sugar
1 450g tin of tomatoes
1 550g jar passata (I used 700g!)
1 tbsp coarse grain mustard

Fry the onion till really soft, then add garlic and beans and fry for two minutes.

Add the tin of tomatoes, passata, lemon juice and sugar and cook gently for 15 minute. At the end stir in the mustard and serve.

This is yum on jacket pots, with grated cheese. Very cheap, cheerful and healthy. Unlike my millionaire's shortbread, which is expensive, desperately bad for you, but oh, so delicious .

eandz · 02/10/2008 14:06

thank you Pidge!

WombFor1More · 02/10/2008 15:10

Hello everyone, just thought I'd pop on before kids back from school. We have finally decided on a name for the poor bubba! He is now Harvey James

I gave in to dp as I can't stand calling him baby any longer!

No sleep here last night, well not for me anyway as Harvey decided he is a baby that likes to eat every 5mins, nojoke and when not eating he doesn't want to be put down either, has been the same all day today too.

Everything hurts too, esp my poor nips! I am so glad Harvey is most definately our last. As lovely as they are I really don't think I could do all this again.

It's ds1's 7th b'day today so having some family around, am so tired though so hopefully they will leave very quickly!!

Sending labour vibes to those still waiting, good luck to you ladies, hope things get moving very soon for you all

foxytocin · 02/10/2008 15:41

Hi everyone:

sending (f)oxytocin vibes for anyone hoping to pop real soon. I suspect things in the foxy household are getting back to normal as I am online looking for car insurance quotes at the moment.

DD2 is 5 days old and currently asleep in a sling. she was weighed today and is a smidge under her birthweight. yay! MW will come back on tues to weigh and discharge us!

I got some lovely flowers from work today and I can't believe I am already thinking of taking her in for a look round. With dd1 I felt like a battlefield survivor well for weeks on end.

plusonemore · 02/10/2008 16:02

why am i crying?

been waiting in all day for something to be delivered for the 4th time and its not going to be and they didnt bother to tell me. that started me off but really i know its not that important. now i cant stop

i guess the answer is prob hormones but is it normal?

Pidge · 02/10/2008 16:19

plusonemore - oh poor you, what a waste of time. It's so useless isn't it. I think it's very normal to be tearful at this stage.

I've got dd1 here home from school, but all she wants to do is chill out in front of the TV so I'm going to put my feet up and join her whilst doing a bit of knitting.

foxytocin - brilliant to hear you're doing so well. I also felt like I'd been run over by a fleet of trucks for about 2 weeks after each of my previous two births, here's hoping I might bounce back quicker from this one!

wombfor1more - lovely name - I have a nephew of that name, and really, really like it.

plusonemore · 02/10/2008 17:16

think i'm over it now. feel so cross with myself when i know i am so lucky- one gorgeous ds, another baby on the way, should be just really excited. think i have gone stir crazy being in all day- too much cbeebies

those boston beans sound yummy i might give it a go.

mamamufin · 02/10/2008 17:46

Hi guys.

Wishing those waiting lots of luck. xxx

jennylindinha · 02/10/2008 18:55

Hope you're feeling better now plusone, I hate it when you wait in all day for delivery men and they don't turn up, grrr. I had a lovely afternoon today with 3 new tiny babies and their mums! Very cute indeed. One of them is a month old now but she was 2 weeks early and just under 5lbs when born so she's still very small. Aw, can't wait to meet mine now

Loving the sound of those beans Pidge, think I may try that one for dinner tomorrow. We often make feijão (brazilian black bean stew) which is delicious, but I fancy something a bit different (and I love baked potatoes).

Nice to hear from you eandz, foxy and womb - hope we'll all be joining you soon!

sagecat · 02/10/2008 20:26

plusonemore hope you have a better evening to make up for a bad day. I know what you mean about feeling crap when we should be feeling grateful - I work with infertile couples and I'AM so grateful to have conceived so easily again - but i do feel miserable frequently just now - it will be all over soon (within 2 weeks) though

nothing happening here - i've got a bit of a cold though which is making me feel a bit more yucky than normal.

Finally dug out the moses basket so somewhere to put the babe now when it makes an apperance

plusonemore · 02/10/2008 22:06

thanks pidge jenny and sagecat am starting to wonder if i'm coming down with a cold too- feel quite shattered despite a relatively uninterrupted sleep last night and a 2hour nap this afternoon! Wonder how munki is getting on?

plusonemore · 03/10/2008 08:27

anyway, morning
I feel much brighter today. Have plans to actually leave the house... and then prospect of it being weekend and therefore dh at home...and then 2nd sweep on monday if nothing...and also ds was 8 days late, labour began at 7 days late which is monday. Feel like i may be able to see the end! And if nothing happens monday/tuesday at least i know it will only be a matter of days at the very most. phew!

Had more irregular braxtons last night, some quite painful, more pressure pains down below and possibly a bit of a show this morning (tmi but no lump of anything, just quite mucusy- can that be it?)

Really i think theres only 5 of us left isnt there? Hopefully everything has gone well for munki and missus, maybe we'll hear today?

plusonemore · 03/10/2008 10:07

and lots more show!!!

jennylindinha · 03/10/2008 10:16

Ooh, well done plus, sounds like this could be it! Hope all goes well...

Nada here - some crampy Braxton hicks last night but to no avail. I think this baby doesn't want to come out!

Flumpy has posted on here, but not much and I guess she must have had her baby by now! So yes, just the 5 of us. I fully expect to be here on my own at the end

plusonemore · 03/10/2008 10:24

phew was just starting to think you were all off having babies!
Hopefully none of us will be on our own at the end, but i guess someone has to be the last to pop! we should have all contributed a quid at the beginning and then the last peron to go gets the pot- at least then there would have been some compensation!!!

sagecat · 03/10/2008 10:37

Morning all, Still here and don't worry jennylindinha i imaging i will out last you

Plusonemore sounds like you are on your way to seeing your wee one this weekend i'll bet! Let us know how you are getting on.

jennylindinha · 03/10/2008 10:59

Oh we so should have done the quid thing (but then people due in early September wouldn't have joined in as they had no chance!) We'll all get there in the end I guess...

jennylindinha · 03/10/2008 13:25

Just had to come on and say that I've made the most yummy batch of double chocolate & nut cookies! Haven't done any baking for years but think I may become seriously addicted now!!! Mmmm....

Pidge · 03/10/2008 14:23

plusonemore - oooooh exciting stuff!

jennyL - I'm hoping I'll be with you a while longer, I just had a call from dp and the granite worksurfaces bloke who had gone AWOL (his wife hadn't seen him for 3 nights, if you remember the saga earlier in the week), has reappeared and is supposedly coming tomorrow!! I'll believe it when I see it. But frankly if he does turn up and I go into labour he'll just have to get on with it, because I'm not sending him away again . Meanwhile, it's legs crossed time for me again. How ridiculous is this.

Gosh those cookies sound good. Sadly no baking for me today - I have dd2 in tow, so we were up at the Horniman for storytelling and lunch with a crowd of her friends. Now just time to chill out with some knitting in front of a Postman Pat viddeo before school run time!

ninja · 03/10/2008 16:07

Pidge - I think that it's your mind that's keeping that baby in there I hope you get that granite worktop - what colour are you having??

I hope to hear all your news soon

MissusH · 03/10/2008 16:36

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT (and gory details...)

Esme Rose arrived 1st Oct weighing 8lbs exactly

Here goes with the story....

We arrive at the hospital at 7am on Weds (after filling ourselves with a yummy McDonalds breakfast ) and are shown to the induction ward along with 2 other ladies...

Am put on a monitor for half an hour, babe is fine although very wriggly so we keep losing the trace! MW examines me at 9am and tells me that cervix is posterior and very definately closed so will need the first dose of Prostin . Was hoping that it might have been open just a little bit...

So at 9am Prostin duly inserted and start feeling a warm sensation inside. Am told that I can go for a wander and to be back for 1pm for lunch and another examination. Myself & DH saunter down to the coffee bar, buy papers & magazines. Feeling fine.

Arrive back on the ward at around 10.30am and start to get niggly but not painful period pains. Pains get worse so we walk the corridors for a bit. Get to the point where I have to stop to breath through them and when we time them we discover that they are a minute apart & lasting 45 seconds It still doesn't register cos I am expecting the induction to last a whole lot longer.

We go back to the ward at midday - the other 2 ladies are not having any contractions at all so it is just me huffing & puffing! I am bent over the back of a chair, rocking and trying to use the hypnobirthing breathing (not entirely successful. I ask DH to find a mw as I need pain relief!)

MW comes in and examines me and am now 5cm dilated. She goes to ring through to the delivery suite so I can go down there for my pain relief. However, after another couple of contractions I tell DH that I need to push - he dashes off to tell MW. She takes a look and announces that we have to get to delivery suite NOW!!

No time to get a wheelchair so am pushed on the bed. DH says it is like a scene from ER - 2 MWs pushing the bed, 2 getting the doors, DH running behind trying to keep up. Have eyes closed trying to breathe through the pain and am starting to push (can't stop myself), but am aware of the breeze on my face and one of the MWs shouting at people to get out of the way (am told afterwards that it was an elderly lady in a wheelchair being pushed by her equally elderly husband )

Arrive in delivery room and need to move across onto another bed (easier said than done so sort of crawl across & end up on my side - cannot move another inch so stay in this position and give birth with my left leg raised in the air. DH says I look like a dog having a wee - gee, thanks DH!) At 1.15pm Esme is delivered onto my chest, eyes open and taking in her surroundings. I do not get my pain relief as we ran out of time - total length of labour is 2hrs 45mins...

We have plenty of skin to skin contact and mw helps her to latch on while she sets up for my stitches (just a small tear and not too painful).

After a lovely bath and some time together am taken to the post-natal ward at 4pm.

Got home today after spending an extra night in hospital to get feeding right (mws fab - spent loads of time with me so I could do it with confidence ). Esme has taken to BFing like an expert (famous last words!) and is currently asleep on my shoulder

DD1 is over the moon and telling us how to do things (a right little mum!)
