loow- bits sound good you sound very organised dont think you need to worry about a moses as well, could u use a travel cot not sure what age you can start using them
on the wee issue - dont think mine smells will have a good sniff later lol

rrrayray · 23/09/2008 19:44

Buckles No, OH hasn't mentioned my Wee Smelling It doesn't hang around after i flush or anything, its just as you get up to wipe, where i'd never ususally smell anything, its like Pong! Very Relieved to hear its not just me!

LooWeeza i TOO am a First Timer, I guess the need for a moses basket depends on whether you intend on having Bubba in your room for the beginning. Its more of a luxury than a necessity - well thats the view i get. As my Friend has used her Pram for overnight staying somewhere else. i think its OK for Occassional use. I am going to Get a moses basket, but my parents are buying that as their gift to us for the baby. Not just because i'm not sure how long/whether the baby will be in our room, but also because we're going to get a rocking stand for the basket, so it'll be useful to have around the house not just for the baby to sleep in at night, but to nap in aswell. Thats my plan- having spoken to my friend who has just had a baby 2 months ago! Good luck making the decission! There is SOooooooo much to decide on isn't there!

moosemama So sorry to hear your suffering so badly. I had a coldy/fluy thing the other week, and it really is miserable- especially not being able to take anything to ease your suffering.

Ah, Question... Does anyone know if safe to take Echinacea Supplements during pregnancy? i used to ALWAYS take them when i was run down, at the first sign of getting a cold, and they work WONDERS. Having had glandular fever a while ago- your immune system never seems to recover!!!

looweeza · 23/09/2008 19:55

thanks tink and rrayray - that's helpful.

yes, i think i'll go without, as there seems to be so many other places for the little one to sleep in..

just remembered about slings too..blimey.

LenniEd · 23/09/2008 19:55

Welcome Jokat.

Mad here - getting ready for a tradeshow at the weekend - so just checking in. House also a tip as we try to decorate nusery - glad others are in the same boat, makes me feel less about the state of the place.

Not sure on Echinacea - supplements generally (other than preg ones) are a little dodgy IME (have arthritis so take a few normally). My GP is fairly clued up but even she couldn't find reliable info about suitability in pregnancy on some of the supplements I normally take. Don't think many of them are reliably researched for preg effects.

Looweeza - If you aren't using a moses basket in your room then I wouldn't bother with it just for nights away. By the time you get organised enough for longer stays away from home you will prob want a proper travel cot (if you visit people often) and the carrycot will be absolutely fine for the odd night - make sure it has a good mattress, am sure it will have anyway. The bedside cribs are lovely (was coveting them in mothercare at the weekend) - and they look longer than moses baskets so will prob last a bit longer too.

We kept DD in with us for 7 months, but different people do different things, depends on how often they feed and when they sleep through. DD finally slept through reliably at 19months and fed every 2-3 hours for at least the first 5 months so really wasn't practical to move her out very early.

Jokat · 23/09/2008 22:12

I've disappeared from the updated list again So I've got the nerve to paste it yet again, with me on it!
BTW, I've got the thrush problem as well, and what's worst is that to combat it we are supposed to avoid all sugary foods while my urge to have things like honey and jam on toast has drastically increased since I got pregnant!

Sorry Rrrayray, I just copied and pasted your tidied-up list (adding my name and date) and didn't realize all the bold letters and numbers would go skinny again. I'll leave that list alone from now on, I promise!

Periwink · 24/09/2008 08:01

LooWeeza I am also a first timer and having a bit of trouble getting my head around wht to buy ... trying not to get sucked into buying all this stuff I am never going to use and wasting money! So far I have decided that I am definetely buying. Bugaboo Chameleon (husband eyes nearly popped out of his head at price - but I have been saving for it for 5 months now), Cabriofix car seat, moses basket with rocking stand, Avent electric breast pump and Avent bottles, microwave bottle sterililiser, cot and baby changer unit .... glug .....hopefully going to buy / order these this weekend! All these purchases are based on recommendation and advise from other mums.

tinkcantwaitfor3dscan · 24/09/2008 08:38

morning

have bought quinny buzz in strawberry red plus accessories.
i am going to get a changing table to with storage shelves and on wheels.
will need bedding getting in december.
we had moses basket for dd really good from mothercare. cost about £40 came with all bedding you need for it as well.
we will be having this one in room till they sleep through as will be sharing a room with dd

fourlittlefeet · 24/09/2008 08:43

Sling-wise (and I would definitely get at least one as they are fab for having the baby on you at home or when they won't go to sleep and are crying so you take them for a walk as it seems to jiggle the wind out)....

I had a wilkinet for the beginning few weeks as its very structured, and then moved on to a hug-a-bub which I absolutely loved and used until DD was 14 months (and my bump got in the way). Have now moved on to a mothercare back carier, but god knows how much longer I'll be able to heft her on my back in it! Sooo much nicer than prams all the time esp. in London with bus rules (only 2 allowed on at a time ) and tube stairs!

If you like walking and want a bjorn sling I'd say try them out first as even the sport models aren't great back-wise. the material ones are more of a faf to learn to tie but are so much more comfortable and will fit any sized person (so if your dh is bigger than you, you don't have to keep resetting all the buckles).

sorry, couldn't help myself. bit of a sling slut. .

looweeza · 24/09/2008 08:59

no, this is brilliant - all info very welcome. me and dh very different in size so will give the bjorn a try out...

Jokat · 24/09/2008 09:11

We have bought a few things on Ebay for very little money, like our moses basket, that were as good as new, so I'd always recommend having a look on there! That frees up precious money for things that you definitely want to be new for hygene reasons etc. I also know of a great discount store not far from Basildon in Essex where they sell high quality stuff (M&P etc) for lower (sometimes much lower!) prices. They've got high chairs, cots, buggies etc. and are called Baby World. We bought a Quinny Buzz there including the carry cot attachment for only something like 260 Pounds! Well worth checking out if you don't live too far away.

fourlittlefeet · 24/09/2008 09:13

the london baby show is on next month so very exited as DP is actually coming too (last time I went on my own with the girls).

fourlittlefeet · 24/09/2008 09:14

oh, and anyone else read the continuum concept? bit scary. had the baby whisperer last time (plenty of threads on that one), but this is quite different!

buckles · 24/09/2008 10:03

The what? Continuum concept? Only just heard of the baby whisperer!
Can you fill me in? Clearly I have some reading to do!

fourlittlefeet · 24/09/2008 11:01

ooh... um.. I'd steer clear! you are basically commiting your child untold damages unless you follow it... probably best not to start . Its a lady who changed us back in the 70s from victorian era parenting to a softer infant led style, based on her observations in the jungle. interesting if read in context. nasty chapter where it gives life from a newborn perspective that is likely to make you want to cry. you have been warned.

fymandbean · 24/09/2008 11:28

Okay - prams - I have the Bugaboo chameleon and think it's a bit heavy (fine for a newborn with the pram bit) but by the time they are 6+ months I also bought a light mcclaren for shopping trips.

Have a look at the silver cross as my friend has this and the pram can also be used as a moses basket which you can't do with the chameleon. think it was this one www.bebe-amor.co.uk/product.php?id=1297

LenniEd · 24/09/2008 12:10

Just quick note on microwave sterilisers - check your microwave is high enough wattage for them - in some the water doesn't get hot enough to clean the bottles properly.

fourlittlefeet · 24/09/2008 12:50

and you can use the dishwasher to sterilize too (though I used milton!)

mel2005 · 24/09/2008 12:59

i have to say the bugaboos are fantastic, i have had several, i usually buy buggies off e-bay and i have to say there are some great bargains on there. the mountain buggies are great as well and much better on the beach than the bugaboo. if you want a good cupholder for the bugaboo the mamas and papas pilko p3/pramette cup holders were good and they were only a few pounds from e-bay. the genuine bugaboo ones i had kept falling off and really got in the way.

i loved the baby bjorn active carrier as well and i have test driven a few carriers in my time. dont go for a cheap one with thin straps as it will soon cut into your shoulders. its better to go for a good secondhand one than a new cheap one. i paid £25 for my secondhand babyborn active and it has lasted two children and is currently on loan to a friend before i have the twins.

i have never had a moses basket until now and i bought some secondhand mamas and papas ones for the twins, just to make my life easier seperating them if one wakes the other one at night. i always buy new matresses.
you can use the bugaboo carrycot with an airflow mattress for nightimes and they fit on the moses basket stands. i might be using my twin mountain buggy carrycot for the twins at night if they prefer being together.

i prefered the electric sterilisers, they cost a bit more but last a long time and work really well.

if you can stretch to an electric swing they are a lifesaver if you have a baby who will not settle. i have bought two for the twins (fisherprice aquarium and rainforest ones) they were about £30 secondhand from e-bay (£100 new) if you are making dinner or on the phone you can put them in there and know they are safe (especially good if you have other children at home). it was the only place my little girl would go to sleep when not breastfeeding.

baby sleeping bags are also great as they stay warm all night and you dont have any problems of covers over the head or baby getting cold because the covers have fallen off. you can also get them up for a feed without them getting cold.

the best changing bags i have found are the skip-hop ones. they clip onto the buggy and also have a long strap. you have loads of room but its not too heavy. the oioi, bugaboo and pink lining ones i had were quite heavy. there are loads of compartments in the skip hop for bottles, purse etc so you know where everything is.

MsSparkle · 24/09/2008 19:00

Evening,

I feel quite unorganised with everyone talking about getting bits for baby. I have been trying to get bits sorted for dd because she is moving into the big bedroom. We need her small room for the baby and want to do the change over before the baby comes so it doesn't look like dd is being shoved out of her room so the baby can have it.

So lots of trips around B&Q and homebase looking for paint and wallpaper. Plus dd is going into the big bed, i am dreding it because i think she is gonna be up and down all the time.

Dp has a trip up to the loft to revive the baby stuff; moses basket, stereliser, clothes etc. I am gonna be so emotional going through dd's baby clothes

Is anyone else super grumpy? I get so grumpy, people are gonna start avoiding me!

Spink · 24/09/2008 20:06

hello everyone,

all the planning on here has helped me tap into my nesting instincts, and I've been writing a loooong list of jobs dh and I need to do over the next couple of months so our home is ready for the bub. Lucky dh his poor face when I presented it to him..

I think we've decided to go for a Phil & Ted Sport as we're not sure how much ds will be using a buggy, and that gives you the option of being a single or a double, so if it ends up being just for Pip, that's fine. I don't LOVE it but seems the sensible thing to do.

I'm also getting a sling - I think a hug a bub if I can find a decent 2nd hand one. We've got a bjorn and that is great, but want something from newborn as it'll make running around after ds easier. Apparently the hugabub is so snug you can bend over to tend to other LOs, hands free, and the little one stays secure.

I went through all ds' baby clothes, and was pleasantly surprised to find we have lots and lots of 0-3mo stuff, neutral, and in really good condition. So apart from a couple of 'special' new things for this new bean, no clothes buying.

Which reminds me, LenniEd - we've got lots of lovely boys stuff from 3-12mo - I'm happy to do a swap with you for girl stuff, but would prefer to wait til the bubs arrive because if the scan woman was wrong and we ARE having a boy, we'll need to keep it all.... Let me know what you think.

OP posts:
Jokat · 24/09/2008 20:30

Hi ladies,
I'vehad my scan today and everything is fine, she said the baby looks perfect! O that's sooo nice to hear... It is slightly on the big side, so my dp will wind me up forever (well, until I give birth) that I'll be having a biggy and that I'll be in a lot of pain!
Although we have been good as far as getting baby's bit and bobs together, we have been unforgivably slack with the organization of an ante-natal course! I only just realized a couple of days ago that we're running out of time to get registered! Are you all registered already? And when will you start yours?
