RE Bra's at night - I wore a bravado thing at night. If I didn't I woke up in a bed of milk cos I think my let down reflex kicked in if I so much as brushed them up against a sheet.

Downside was how hot it all was!! Big blooming bra and two big hot milk carrying devices stuck inside like hot waterbottles.

Was a very milky sweaty mama till milk got a bit more regulated after month or so.

Amazing ever conceived again really - given all dh has seen and done and woken up next to.

HI everyone. Have a surprise day off work and dd1 has gone to nana to bake buns. Slept from 10 till 10 and am still in PJ's hurrah!

Am planning to work til 37 weeks - I don't want to but feel obliged to for variety of reasons. mainly I am in a new job - started at 29 weeks so feel I have to put the hours in really. But this is on the understanding that I go a bit overdue!!!!!!! This baba had better not turn up early - I have nappies to wash!

Is anyone else secretly worried/hoping they will deliver at CHristmas or NewYear?

About MLU/consultant unit quandary - I say go with MLU if you think you are up for it and happy to experience the 'sensations of contractions' {aparently the word pain has negative vibes}. Ha!
With dd1 I was totally up for any amount of 'being slowly murdered sensation of a contraction' pain every 5 mins and actually coped OK - it was agony but it lasted 45 seconds and as long as I could have the 3 or 5 mins in between feeling Ok I was game. But then it all went Pete Tong and I needed consultant care, syntocinon, epidural and lots of worried looking doctors. Poop. Without the problems the laboour itself ran into - I think I was OK actually.

All the non epidural pain relief, coping strats were really really good - but I still felt pain. If thats ok with you, the the MLU type unit will best support you with this.

If your planning on using all the non-epidural type stuff [massive lumping together of 100's of tried and tested stuff I know] and are hoping this means you wont feel pain or wont mind it, then I kinda think a consultant unit with access to anaesthetic staff is good. We don't have to have an epidural, but at least we won't face an ambulance ride if we change our minds. And for me, getting in the birthing pool for example, didn't take any pain away. But it made me feel more relaxed and dreamy and better able to tolerate the pain.

Hope that makes sense????? Suppose it's about having realistic expectations of what any pain relief/coping stratergy can do.

My baby transverese at moment - not compatable with active job and Pelvic trouble. My mum says it's because when she was breech I kept wobbling her head about and she got fed up and moved - but it was fun!!

Also feel like may never poo again

Please excuse my spelling.

lennied i agree that 'excessive routine can exacerbate so many problems.' i know it did in the house i grew up in.

mssparkle funny about the hoover. i wish DH would break the hoover because i have a real fetish, (i know, a little weird) for vacuums. it is my favorite chore.

welcome treedelivery i was thinking that time seems to have shot forward. we are all going to start pumping out the babies in no time! AHHH!!!

givethedogabone buying bras online i was advised that if you are fully confident that you are wearing your right size, ( i went to a couple of shops to be sized before buying) than buy that size. if not, buy a cup bigger.

moosemama my little one is doing the same and feels like she is trying to push herself right out of the top of my belly. it gets so hard and deformed. i wrestle her around a bit and rub lots. she sort of gets the message

rrayray awesome with the bikini.

i haven't felt grumpy but i am waking occasionally crying in my sleep which sets the tone for the day. i don't know what it is but the emotion is so strong that i can't stop it and when i try to talk about it, the lump comes back in my throat and i am uncontrollably crying. pent up anxiety and worry i guess. DH is fab in getting me out of my funk though.

i wanted to ask second + timers about this wearing nursing bras to bed! i just read it in an article. we have to start wearing bras to bed when we are nursing. i haven't even wore pj's to bed since i was 8. i can't imaging having to wear a bra!

Didn't get a chance to check this before OH got home early, but we did go and see the bond film! Went to a 5pm Showing so i'd still be awake it really was pretty good, esp considering i havent seen any of the last few bond films. Not as OTT manly as i expected! We then went for a LOVELY Mexican, i LOVE Mexican food. Were home & in my pjs snuggled by the fire by half 8.... Mmmmmmmmm!!

Am wondering if perhaps a bikini was a bad idea by the amount of Open mouths i've caused... Maybe thats why that old woman was staring like 'how could she.' I didn't think i looked too awful, no stray hairs, and am pretty much all bump (and boobs) with my funny 1/2 in 1/2 out belly button! haha. Think i might even try and squeeze in a swim tomo too, it made me feel THAT much better, aches and pains wise!

misshairspray - its my first birth too... the reasoning behind my deciding to go with the MLU (our consultant led hospitial is about the same distance away) is after visiting both. i had my first scan at the hospitial, and was left waiting for ages to see the midwife afterwards, eventually i said something, turns out that the message that i was waiting hadnt even been passed on. God knows why the receptionist thought i was sitting there, maybe she thought i was waiting for my baby to arrive Then when i had my 16 week midwife appointment the midwife suggested i look at the MLU, so after checking it out and falling in love with it (sounds silly, but i did, i came away so happy and smiley about the idea of bringing my little one into the world there) the midwives are all so nice, the facilities are MUCH better than the hosp (for a BIG maternity unit, there is only ONE birth pool, where as the MLU has 4, one in each room) and its pretty quiet, on average they only delivery 2 babies a week, so i know i'll get the personal touch & be a person having a baby not just a number on a sheet. Anyway, i hope maybe that helps you as to how i made my choice... But definately talk to someone about it! Is it worth searching out on here on your local mumsnet some people who have given birth in both the hosp & MLU & their opinions/experiences with both.

Fourlittlefeet - Does sound like a good book, that is pretty much what was covered in my NCT class last night.

Oooooooh and have packed HER baby bag... Shame i don't have literally ANYTHING for mine... Must do!

lol at cheeky grin. may yet try it.

on the taxi in London front, my friend called up the different local taxi firms in advance and found one that would be happy to transport her in labour. Seemed like a really sensible idea.

FLF - I keep meaning to buy that book. I love 'Bloomin Birth' too which I think has the same ethos really.

What would happen if you turned up at the MLU in labour?

Report
LenniEd · 18/11/2008 20:56

MissHairspray - have you talked to your midwife about your lack of transport? As far as I know you will be strongly discouraged from calling an ambulance unless you are literally about to give birth. Although it seems it is pretty hard to get a taxi in London if you are in labour. I remember a friend in central London going through this dilemma and she ended up walking to the hospital as she had 2 people on standby but went into labour during the day when they were at work. There really should be some kind of alternative for people in cities without cars. I think you might be right about the homebirth option, but I wouldn't overlook the MLU - I would love to give birth in one, but alas there are none near me. I'd have a good talk with your midwife and see what she thinks.

MsSparkle - glad you have said that about 'getting ready' I was starting to worry that this baby would be early. I suppose first time round I had more muscle tone to hold everything together which might explain why I am feeling like baby could come anytime. Plus I am having loads of period type pains and backache. Sounds like the MLU would still be a good option for you then - the journey to hospital isn't too long and you'll prob find you can manage the pain better in nicer surroundings with one-to-one care.

Having read Ina May's guide to childbirth I'm seriously considering a home vbac. they won't let me go to a MLU and the thought of going to the hospital where it all went tits up last time is making me feel very sick! I recommend everyone read it if they can; its very empowering, lets you know the ins and outs of all the different drugs you are offered and how they affect you/the baby/your chances of having a c-section etc. Its also fab just for realising that this is what we are made for and that birth is beautiful and exciting rather than scary and frightening. I also like the fact that it says it is not necessarily very painful as the pains you get are productive ones, not the kind that means there is something wrong with you, and that baby size isn't an issue and can actually assist labour in the right position.

MissHairspray · 18/11/2008 20:13

Evening ladies
MsSparkle i'm having a bit of a dilemma about where to give birth too. The nearest place is a MLU 5 mins drive away but am a bit concerned that it is my first birth and I might want an epi. The nearest proper hospital is 30 mins away and hubby doesn't drive so I don't want to go there unless I really have to. So it looks like the MLU but... my thinking is that if i'm going to try to give birth without an epi then wouldn't I get the same level of care if I stayed at home and wouldn't this be more relaxing? Had not even considered the idea of home birth before but if I go to the MLU i'm still going to have to try and get a taxi or ambulence there which can't be very relaxing and might make things worse. So not totally decided, just musing things over.
Just killing myself laughing at your streak down the corridor qumps
Two and a half weeks left at work now, if it wasn't for the fact that it wouldn't be great for babs if he came out now I would be doing everything I could to get this birth going just to avoid having to write all of those bloody reports.

Lots of posts to catch up on!

LenniEd, Yes i would be taken to the other hospital by ambulance quickly. I would guess it would take about 15 minutes to transfer because the ambulance can get there alot quicker than you would in the car. Also yes, i feel like my baby is getting ready too. Must be a second time around thing?

evening everyone,
thanks for the raspberry tea talk - reminded me to get some - I love the flavour of it (normally hate fruit and herb type teas but there you go) so will be going down to Neal's yard tomorrow to stock up..

Had a mw appt today, everything seems fine, baby is lying diagonally so I'm going to try to persuade it into a vertical position as transverse wouldn't be so good for a home birth. I'm going to go through my notes from my last delivery with a mw - I asked about it and they do a service called 'birth stories' where a mw comes to your home with your notes and talks it all through with you - how thoughtful is that? I'm quite surprised really, thought they'd palm me off with 5 mins in the hospital corridor. Anyone else done this before?

off to make meatballs now..

DH and I would love to go and see Bond - note to self...must arrange babysitter before it's too late and DC2 is here!!!
LG&T they will induce me early because of gestational diabetes. I've to get another scan in a fortnight to check on the size of the baby, but regardless they like to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels whilst labouring so they won't let you "go yourself" so to speak. Baby is also breech at the moment too...so if it doesn't turn on it's own or with ECV then it'll be a section. I'm 34 weeks, so they'll give it another 2 weeks for the baby to turn. It's not really bothering me too much as I would really like the baby to be here before Christmas

I don't Own a swim Suit... although i will need to invest in one, not going swimming in a bikini with a jelly belly afterwards. Think my Dinky bikini bottoms were actually being totally chewed up by my ever expanding bottom while i was swimming!! had to pull them out before getting out Despite it being REALLY empty i felt like EVERYONE was staring at me, especially one old woman, i felt like she was glaring at me like i shouldn't be there. So i just glared right back... soon made her feel uncomfortable for being such a nosey old fart

just been looking at pictures from when i was in spain 10 days ago... my Hooters have got so big they make my bump look actually SMALL in comparision! Are they REALLY going to get that much bigger......!!!

Just read up on Carpal Tunnel... pretty sure thats what it is.. although its not too bad & not constant at the moment. So fingers crossed. But compared with some of you poor mites with SPD i'm thinking myself lucky!

Fourlittlefeet- lucky you, i hate all things herbal like to drink, so tablet form it is for me! Apparently its great to continue to drink, well Sip, through a straw once actually in labour. In VERY strong form!

MADE my NCT class last night, went and hunted the place out in the daylight, and the annoying this is we were almost there, our sat nav just took us on a magical mystery tour. Grrrr.

Class was good, teacher was lovely, although i felt like i was back at school with all the being put on the spot! Also, whilst everyone was absolutley lovely think i was the longest by an absolute Country mile. My mother (who was the one who said NCT classes are a MUST) did warn me that the "stereotype" for the NCT classes would be considerably older than us, but still....Oh & one persons husband when asked Questions (serious ones mind you) always kept coming up with oh-so-not funny lines/jokes. Criiiiiiiinge!!

Thinking OH & i going to go for dinner & cinema tonight, being that cinema is one of those spontaneous things you obviously can't take a baby with you to! Any ideas of a good film out at the moment?? Havent been to cinema in Loooooong time!
