Best of luck tomorrow dizzy. Give me a shout if you fancy some company. Nothing planned here and with the all-clear to drive, could be in your neck of the woods in a trice.

Much quieter day here and it was lovely. DD1 on great form and DD2 calm. DD2 did sleep virtually all day though, so suspect this may not be a quiet, peaceful night....

Lovely photos gigglegirl. Can't believe how much you fit in to your life.

imogen now asleep so I'm going to attempt to get some too - keep faffing about setting up my new websites rather than resting! At least i'm sitting down though!

Is anyone up? I'm having first night panic. Joseph's breathing seems quite wheezy since we got him home, is it possible he's picked up a cold already? Maybe allergic to the cats? Also, he's been feeding really well and getting the hang on latching on quite quickly, but for some reason now that we're home he doesn't seem to want to latch on to the right hand side. Have fed him twice from the left this evening with no problem, but he just fusses and cries on the right and when he does latch on, he stops sucking...really confused.

Sorry, it's just all so new and he's so tiny - I know I'm being a wuss but it's hard to know if we're doing a decent job or not. He has slept most of today, which I understand is normal for a few days after birth...

miamla · 04/09/2008 03:55

i'm awake.

cyteeen, i'm no expert with bf but have you tried a completely different position for your right side? eg the rugby ball one

you are def doing a decent job, try and stay relaxed and i'm sure it will all come together

what about posting a message on bf section on here?

TwilightSurfer · 04/09/2008 06:22

Cyteen, don't panic. Your baby will be different daily. Normal breathing is all over the place and a slight wheeze is perfectly normal. If he's really nasally just use the bulb gadget on his nose. Reese has had a cold since day 4 and the doctor told me as long as there is no fever and it stays out of her chest, she will be fine. So far so good. As for feeding...I'll just say babies can be moody eaters who typically get what they need even though worry...as for the specific hold/latch issue, I'll let a real BFing mamma offer advice there.

You are doing just fine.

OP posts:
Expectant · 04/09/2008 06:38

Hi all and congrats to the new mummies.

cyteen we had similar problems and Sam is still a bit wheezy. The midwife also suggested saline drops up the nostril to get rid of those bogies.

Still having problems with the bf and I possibly have thrush which doesn't help as one nipple is still incredibly sore. I thought it was getting better as we had managed to sort out the latching problems but it still hasn't helped. Sam also didn't put on too much weight the week before this which was getting to me too although he appears to have made up for it this week. We had a really good night on Tuesday night but yesterday and last night were a nightmare as Sam didn't really sleep and just fed from about 4pm yesterday to having finally just gone to sleep at 1pm today! - he's just woken up again as well (aaarrghh)

VintageGardenia · 04/09/2008 08:16

Hi cyteen only thing I'd add is depends what you mean by wheezy. If nose seems a bit blocked I'd say yes that's prob normal enough as Joseph's little nose gets to grips with air for the first time - and perhaps cat hair air is harder than other air, which is not to say will be hard for him in the long run. But if by wheezy you mean a chest/lung wheeze like asthma or a bronchitisy type wheeze I would actually get him checked out.

Here we still have a slight breathing sound which is like a blocked nose, though if you look up ds's nose it's a completely clear passage. We have a cat and two dogs so I try to keep fairly hoovered.

Don't worry. Your instinct for Joseph will practically always be right.

VintageGardenia · 04/09/2008 08:46

Can a four-week-old smile?

I swear he just did!

Expectant · 04/09/2008 09:11

We also have 2 cats -who I might add are being incredibly well behaved.

VG am very but yes according to the books babies smile at around 4-6 weeks. DH is certain that Sam smiled at him earlier in the week which also made me very - just call me the milking machine hey!

VintageGardenia · 04/09/2008 09:23

Oh Expectant you know he's probably smiled at you thousands of times before he granted one to DH. It's just that his face was covered by a boob at the time so you didn't see it!

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 04/09/2008 10:13

Morning ladies

Anyone got/had any experience with strange noises from babies.

Quite difficult to describe but ds makes a terrible grunting/straining sound A LOT of the time, face goes red body arches and squirms almost as if straining to pass bowel movement.
He doesnt appear to be constipated, occasionally trumps or burps when I pick him up, so though could be a cause of not winding him properly.
However last two nights have been pretty bad with the grunting. Dh seems to think its not right and something is wrong.
He doesnt cry or get stressed during this just looks and sounds uncomfortable.
He doesnt want feeding when he starts this but it went on from 1.30 till 5.30am
any advice???

dizzydixies · 04/09/2008 12:02

no1 the noises babies come out with are nothing short of fantastic I would definately put those down to wind by your desc BUT would always ask HV or midwife if you're worried

Dylan is quite a windy baby so tend to keep her upright until I'm convinced its all out and she is completely asleep

Managed to get dd1 to school on time having been fed and dressed too! Am very proud of myself lol Took dd2 to park on her bike with Dylan in sling and all went very well EXCEPT for dd2 falling on the grill that stops dogs coming into the park and her dummy falling through it - we can't get it back out and she'll no doubt see it EVERY SINGLE TIME we go to the park - which is on average once a day - could only happen to me lol

DH back at work and thoroughly miserable already bless him - I think having been off for 6wks it'll take him a while to get back into it - roll on the Euro millions!!

sazz are you here? when you have Emma in your sling are you using the first or second hold? the one with her legs seperated by the straps or the one with her in an across the body position?

I had dylan across the body but didn't really feel it too secure so moved her to second one stuck on the front with legs either side BUT I can't seem to stop her wee head from lolling about the place and seem to end up holding it - any tips or am I doing it completely wrong?!

lovely sunny day here again, fingers crossed it stays

dizzydixies · 04/09/2008 12:03

VG am convinced Dylan is smiling too and also cannot believe that is her 5wks today

cyteen you're doing just fine, just keep asking

CaptainCaveman · 04/09/2008 12:11

Hi gals!

no1 ds1 was the noisiest creature on the planet, so much so that we moved him into his own room at 10 days old coz we never got any sleep. It was like being in the middle of a zoo the noises he made. Sorry I can't offer any explanation of what he's doing - ds2 goes very red in the face when he's trying to trump or poo.

cyteen I hope Joseph is a little more settled today? How was your night after you posted?

Ladies, I have started my fitness regime - currently up to 15 minutes of exercise (woo Hoo) and am using the Wii fit. It's actually quite good fun but man I am weak . I'm hoping to get back to hockey at the end of this month so I need to get a shift on!

CaptainCaveman · 04/09/2008 12:12

and I'm convinced Oliver gave me a lopsided grin yesterday . He's definately looking more intently at our faces so me, ds1 and dh are grinning like some manic idiots who had an accident in the botox factory

am def off to price a Wii Fit so will have no excuse

AnnVan · 04/09/2008 12:39

Hello all. I've had the most shocking lie-in today. Mind you I was awake till silly o'clock again. However, I was having low down crampy pains in my back and bump through most of the night. Which have stopped completely now I've had a few hours sleep, but I'm not stressing about that just yet, as at least I know now that things are warming up.

Just making some porridge for my 'breakfast'

dizzydixies · 04/09/2008 12:48

oohh all sounds promising Ann!

AnnVan · 04/09/2008 13:04

I thought so Dizzy - I'm going to walk into Rochester with MIL in a bit, so hopefully the walking will encourage things to continue warming up.
I also had a bit of an energy burst last night which meant that I could do all the washing up!

oopsacoconut · 04/09/2008 13:07

Morning All

annvan sounds good - pleased you managed some sleep.

Dizzy which sling do you have? we have a kari me wrap but i'm still yo scared to use it!

No1 -dd makes loads of strange noises and I constantly have DH asking if she's okay. When on the ward dd was grunting and groaning the midwife walked past and said 'sounds like wind' and strolled off. so i pivcked her up and patted her back, hey presto a huge burp and off she went back to sleep. Also look at his mouth - is he slightly blue/white around his lips/under his nose? this is a sure fire sign of wind and should dissapear with a good burp.

Midwife coming today - sometime between 2 and 6??? i know i have a new baby but i also have tgings to do. maybe we will have a nap.

oooh one handed typing take loads of time

WARNNG RANT ALERT

DH and havwe been discussing birth announcement cards, we found 2 different choices - very modern with a photo on or use an antique card with wording on rear no photo. Today FIL comes in asking for wording for birth announcement and photo - I said we decided on words only no photo. we can add a photo to envelope if we want to. He strops off telling dh that we are complicating things adding too many bits of paper to the envelope and people will be confused (WTF - birth announcemnt and photo how confusing is that??)Also why can't we put photo on right and text on left? I said we had decided on antique card and photo looks strange. Now he has spent the last 40 minute bending dh's ear about it and how 'it is his grand-daughter too' and he will print his own if we don't like what he says. Now forgive me if I'm wrong here - our baby our right to announce her as we see fit. Our right to chose who and when and if we send cards. I don't want him sending out his own cards he had his turn with DH and now it's our turn. FIL will hold this against me if he doesn't get his own way but i feel stongly and don't want to regret sending out acard I don't like. I KNOW ITS ONLY A CARD but right now it seems an issue of control of baby rights!

Now sitting crying and the midwife is coming soon - i know it's only me being hormaonal as this wouldn't normally reduce me to tears - but all I need is her branding me depressed cause of my big red eyes and an arguement with FIL.

Phew rant over and I feel better - Thanks
