What's the general consensus on babies sleeping on their sides? Kurt seems to settle better, esp obviously after a lying-down feed. Think he's probably a natural tummy sleeper but this is as far as I will compromise. Is it going to screw up his shoulders/spine?

CaptainCaveman · 02/09/2008 11:37

Good morning - pleased to report that the mastitis has settled with feeding and paracetamol, so obv not 'infectious' mastitis and no abs required. Boob still a little tender but no where near as bad as it was - Thank the Lord

Congrats hazie & ellasmum on your safe arrivals! Do they smell gorgeous?

buckets I've no idea what side sleeping might do to a child, but if you ask the HV she will probably say it turns them into a serial killer, whilst she dials social services nubmer to report you . Back sleeping is obv better as it reduces the risk of cot death, however, it is also acknowledged that many babies have flatter heads and some crawl later as a result of not spending time on their tummies. Sorry, I'm not much help am I!?

Thanks for your texts dizzy - I did as you ordered and drank plenty too (water not wine )

annvan how's your moses basket looking?

sazz you are doing a sterling job feeding Emma - I don't know that I could have done what you've done with all that expressing etc. You deserve a medal!

Hello to everyone else too, hope you are all well?

I've been on the Wii fit this morning and managed 11 minutes of aerobic exercise . I have set myself a goal of losing 1 stone in 2 months......

cyteen · 02/09/2008 11:59

Hello all,

Just a quick post to say that Joseph Simon has finally arrived - born at 2.30pm yesterday via VB, weighing 8lb He is so gorgeous it hurts and very characterful too! Labour and delivery was a bit of a mixed bag - will post the whole story when I'm back at home properly (am just stopping in en route to the birth centre for a bit of postnatal TLC), but all I will say right now is "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times". I feel like I have been run over by a horse and have a world of stitches cluttering up my special area, which makes sitting down rather a challenge. But on the whole the world seems a shinier place DP was AMAZING and is so in love with little DS We're both a bit overwhelmed, but happy!

AnnVan · 02/09/2008 12:01

Yay cyteen!! Hello Joseph! congratulations!

AnnVan · 02/09/2008 12:05

CC - the moses basket looks good. And DP likes it as well, which is good, I wasn't too sure what he would think o it. What isn't looking goodis the likelihood of having a little body to put in it any time soon. - that's not anger just mild frustration. Trying to just ignore all the random pains I've been having as they obviously don't mean anything exept that my body is playing silly buggers (frankly it's done that all through this pregnancy)

Skybluebelle · 02/09/2008 12:08

Congratulations cyteen!

Still no sign of babybelle - booked in to be induced tomorrow...

CaptainCaveman · 02/09/2008 12:15

Huge congrats cyteen and mrcyteen and welcome to joseph simon Yay!!

OP posts:
oopsacoconut · 02/09/2008 13:54

CONGRATULATIONS CYTEEN and MRCYTEEN Welcome Joseph

All going here - my milk came in today so poor Poppy trying to deal with giant norks which are as hard as rock!!! Still she is getting there and has developed the most amazing milk drunk look!!

FIL phoned today asking how night was - DH said good Poppy fed every 2/3 hours with a large 4 hour slot from 4-8. FIL's response...... Well there is a medical reason they make formula - It is more nutritionally balanced for babies and she will end up being a skinny sickly baby?? DH said well we will agree to disagree this conversation won't happen again! YAY GO DH It made me so cross and was thrilled DH stood up for me and our choice. (also he loves her drunk look and sees no reason to change anything that makes her and me happy!)

On our way to hospital for newborn check - hospital for got to do one before we were discharged then didn't tell community team to do it so we are out our 72 hour window of government targets - yay I don't like being a target anyway!

Will try log on later to catch up later.

waytoomuchchocolate · 02/09/2008 14:26

congratulations cyteen!

lots of random period pains for me too annvan, but nothing regular or particularly frequent. surely it's all got to be helping in some way though?!

AnnVan · 02/09/2008 14:33

WMTC - we can but hope!

Oops - about formula comments. What is it with the older generation in the UK that thinks formula is better than BF?? Thankfully I won't have that prob, as my MIL BF'd FIve kids, and my mum BF'd as well. Actually, my mum would skin me i I FF'd as she views it as a feminist thing, and my mum HATES feminism! (Yes my parents are strange)
Sounds like your DH handled it brilliantly Go MrCoconut!

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 02/09/2008 14:50

congratulations Cyteen

Thanks for advice Sazzles it is quite difficult with dd. dh would rather let her sleep in our bed, I agree with you on that one. But she wouldnt anyway she gets very upset if we bring her in with us.
Dont know why, she seems to prefer her own space. has always been put down to slaap awake from being born and has always slept pretty well.
I know its early days and it is all new and strange for her.
I feel so guilty when she sees me holding ds all the time.

On a funnier note she keeps squeezing my boobs and pulling my top down. obviously the squeezing hurts like hell, but she is obviously taking note of feeding sessions. I showed her the milk and she tasted off my finger and said mmm...
SORRY if people thing I am wrong /gross for doing this but I think it helped her understand what I was doing. IYKWIM

Sazzles I think you hasve done amazing with the expressing, I expressed some the other day as they were so full as I couldnt rouse him from slumberland.

When he feeds after a good sleep he feeds really well, but then sometimes only feeds for ten minutes falls into deep sleep, no tickling etc... will wake him so I lay him down and then he may have another 10 min feed about half hour to an hour later.

Health Visitor been today he droped to 91b 15oz which I dont think 3 oz is that bad is it??
She told me to persevere with BF and she be back to weigh him again next week.

Hope all you ladies are well,
Any more news from anyone??
Annvan have you had any more twinges, do you still feel off it.

PetitFilou1 · 02/09/2008 15:25

Hooray to Cyteen and welcome to Joseph!

oops re fil's comments on ff - where on earth did he get that idea from. Older men and bf - they are often a bit weird about it I think

will catch up properly later if I get the chance!

AnnVan · 02/09/2008 15:46

no1 - I don't think that's gross at all, just means your DD knows that bf is natural and normal etc.
The thing about twinges, is I don't even know if they ARE pre-labour twinges. It's seriously annoying me. Esp as I started with funny back aches weeks ago, but nothing since then. I'm trying not to be moody, but finding it hard. Stuck in limbo, and I don't particularly want to be induced.
These last few months I had due date to count own towards, now there is nothing just floating until stubborn baby gets its act together. I swear it's probably in there singing 'we shall not be moved' or something.

VintageGardenia · 02/09/2008 15:52

Welcome Joseph Simon! Well done cyteen how fantastic that he's made his appearance! Look forward to your birth story when you're ready, glad your DP was an angel for you.

Re. FF being medically gauged or whatever to be better for your baby - sheesh. Why don't people just back off with their unasked for advice and judgment anyway? You ff if you choose to, you bf if you choose to. The last person to take advice from is one's FIL anyway, unless he happens to work as a neotal nutrition specialist, rather than just believing himself to be one.

And can I just say something to all the ff mums - I am bf'ing this baby and am hoping it continues to work out. Whatever I've said about people annoying me by telling me to give him a bottle, etc, does NOT mean I think ff is bad, it's just not what I've chosen to do so I wish people would stop interfering. I would never say to a ff mum, oooh you know you really ought to be breastfeeding? Anyway the annoying comments rarely come from peer mums. Rant over!

Someone asked re. reading and bf'ing. This is about the only thing related to babycare I can actually claim to be an expert on!

  1. Lie baby along kitchen table with head on your forearm which rests on table. Hand of that arm holds book (behind baby's head). Free hand used to manipulate boob, turn page, stroke baby's face etc.
  2. Lie in bed on side, facing baby. Underneathy arm stretched beyond baby, holding book. Free arm as above.
  3. Sit cross legged on sofa with cushion / V pillow supporting baby, stacked high enough for baby to reach breast. Arm supports baby's shoulders, head, free arm holds book.

AnnVan · 02/09/2008 16:01

VG - well said - I have nothing against mums who FF. But I do find it odd how many people post problems with PILs/parents saying bf isn't good for baby etc

Skybluebelle · 02/09/2008 16:35

AnnVan - I completely understand how you feel re. feeling in limbo with no target date to aim for - it's so frustrating and can be a real rollercoaster of emotions. I'm now 13 days overdue and being induced tomorrow - something that I really didn't want (to the extent that I burst into tears when the MW told me ). Was meant to be induced on Monday but wanted to give my body a couple of days more chance to do things naturally. [Hmmmm - maybe that's where the baby gets it's stubborness from....]

I'm really looking forward to meeting Babybelle at last, but the excitement is very much mixed with the emotion that the birth will be very different to the one I'd hoped for.

Just wanted to let you know that I understand how you feel and am sending you huge labour vibes, although clearly not very effective ones

Thanks belle - good luck tomorrow. I'll be having a sweep on Friday. And I have reflexology lady booked tomorrow. SO hopefully one of these will get the squirmy moving.

Yay Cyteen, good work there! Agree with Sazzles, no unhelpful visitors (or visits) until you can sit down comfortably and are happy-ish with feeding.

VG PMSL So impressed with the feeding on the kitchen table! Kurt just doesn't feed for long enough stints without drowning and needing a burp but I have a book in the rocking chair's pocket for when he dozes off.

Oh and question about infacol - do you just squirt it down their throats while they're screaming for their supper? Think the lying down night feeds are causing the 4am unsettledness so have put some on the Tesco order.

Annvan and sky really feel for you both.
I know I would have been gutted if I had to be induced.

The night before labour I went in our gym while dh was at work and went on the treadmill, just a gentle then quick stroll not for long though, oh and I ate a whole fresh pineapple. Not saying any of these helped by the way, as i had a show two days before. Oh and I had 2 refloxology sessions pretty close together, she didnt lots of stroking on uterus area and I had lots of braxton hicks(strong) one all day after.

Also when my mw came home to see me on the day marcus was born she did a sweep.
He arrived about 9 hours later.
