The impression I have got (from MN and other people with kids) is to not bother spending a tonne of money on big travel system prams and newborn stuff. Because they will grow out of the first stage which they are really good for so quickly and then you will just want something light and easily foldable.

I'm a bit lucky though, because I'm inheriting a travel system so maybe I should just be quiet...

Law -- does that mean I should just buy a Baby Bjorn to carry the baby in, and a car seat, and then buy a pushchair jobby instead of the 3-in-1 combos I have seen on the web?

Oh, have just seen that the Maclaren Techno XLR works from birth but is only 240 quid -- maybe that's the answer then HW?

What does it mean by "travel system"? Is that pram, car seat and push chair - the same as 3 in 1?

Sorry for being slow.

No feelings here HW - but is my first and am only 13+1

lizziemun · 09/09/2008 11:34

Hedge

Yes i'm on my 3rd and i am sure i have felt something move .

Boobz

The only advice i can give re prams/travel systems is to workout what you realy need.

I have a this. As i don't have a car during the week so walk everywhere, i used it everyday with dd1 for 2 +yrs and have used it everyday with dd2 and will do until this one born and then i will have to go to a double dd2 will only be 18mths, but i will go back to my mamas & papas as soon as i can.

laweaselmys · 09/09/2008 12:19

Echo HW about pram/pushchair/carseatness.

The thing is for me, I don't drive, I walk or get the bus everywhere, so what's important to me is a pram with storage space and that's light and easy to fold up/get around on public transport. I am not as keen on most travel systems for this reason, but I do like them at the first stage, where most of them look like lizziemum's pram, just because you can see your DC when you go for a walk, and that's quite nice!

I have finally booked my dating scan! It will be in my 14th week!! How ridiculous.

MKG · 09/09/2008 12:34

Boobz--definitely get one that is one handed to fold. I used to be able to hold ds1 in one arm and fold the stroller in the other.

Second travel systems are great, and you have a carseat ready for the next baby.

Yeah have to agree with everyone you just really need to work out whats best for you i had the three wheeler with car seat from mothercare as knew it would last DD till a toddler (still uses it now!) its sturdy and easy to fold but you need a biggish boot. Then got a cheap stroller for hols etc.

My SIL was constantly changing her pushchairs which seemed so silly, buy sensibly in the first place! we went for a test drive in mothercare it was the one thing my DH really seemed to get in to during the whole pg! also he is 6ft tall while im only 5.2 so we needed to make sure neither of us would look silly!

Yarnie · 09/09/2008 13:19

I had to come and on splurge about about my scan as no one IRL knows I'm pg yet, except DF of course

My scan went well today. There was some farcical goings on with my newfound inability to control my bladder. I had to run back to the house and wee while I was waiting at the bus stop, and then I had to wee when I was in the waiting room for the scan (which they specifically tell you not to do). Unfortunately, I was going hot and cold and feeling a bit funny so I just had to go. I downed a bottle of water afterwards but got called really quickly. I still needed to wee (I had managed to stop mid-flow(!), but my bladder wasn't full enough and I think made the sonographer's work a bit harder. I am so lame.

Anyway, the important thing is the Pip has all its appendages and was wriggling around. My NT measurement was well in the normal range too. I get my combined result in about a week.

They've moved my EDD forward, too, so I'll repost the list, if that's ok.

GOOD LUCK to all you ladies who have your scan tomorrow

We went to look at prams this weekend and have fallen in love with the Loola UP. I can't see why anyone would buy anything else now, so the sales pitch I heard must have been good! We have a Mamas and Papas travel system from when DD was tiny, but we don't like it, and as it was second hand we're treating ourselves to a new one. Just need to try out the car seat in our car, then we'll be ordering online.

Whichever pram you buy, Mothercare is great for trying prams out, but their prices are much too high. Our Loola (when we get it) is £305 online in a few stores but costs £375 in Mothercare.

emma2617 · 09/09/2008 14:26

Ooooh...HC I have just looked at the Loola UP...and I really like it!!! I would go for the one with the car seat aswell though but in the pictures it looks like it has a lay flat carry cot type attachement...is that right?!

SpookyMadMummy · 09/09/2008 14:30

Afternoon Ladies hope we are all well!!

I am really tired again lately and I am reorganising a few bits at home to make my life easier!

thehedgewitch I am glad you said about flutters - this is Dc3 for me and I thought it was odd! I have felt a few flutters but they could be wind LOL

I purchased a second hand M&P pramette yesterday which will be perfect for the school run! Its a heavy pram so if I am off to town shopping I will do the same as I did with the others and use my baby sling.
When Dc3 is about 6 months old I will probably get a McLaren Triumph or Quest for ease of getting on and off the bus!

Slickbird · 09/09/2008 15:47

Afternoon ladies - hope everyone is doing well.

Boobs, IMHO, I would recommend something that your bambino can lie flat in to protect its back, quite vulnerable to start with, something that with have a car seat clip onto (infinitely handy so you can just take the base when you are in the car) and the most important bit!!! - SEPARATE HANDLES FOR HANGING YOUR SHOPPING ON!!! - There's nothing worse than a crap little basket space underneath the pram and a bar handle - You just can't carry it all! I had that the first time round and although it was a great pram and had the carry cot, car seat and push chair, the full bar drove me nuts. With DD2 we did use that one, but also got my brother's one with separate handles and have used it tonnes. You can migrate to a light collapsible (sp?) stroller when they are older, they don't cost much. I feel this post has been quite long on the subject of handles, but there it is. I feel strongly about it!

EllieorOllie · 09/09/2008 16:23

My SIL has spent the past 5 months asking me constantly about travel systems, buggies, etc,and with 3 weeks to go they have gone and bought a flippin bugaboo. Typical. Not quite what I recommended, but never mind. I have a silvercross stroller which I love, and I'm going to buy a silvercross pram for DC2. I think it all depends how you're going to use your travel apparatus (!). I found the whole travel system thing totally unnecessary with DD1 as I pretty much walk everywhere unless I'm going to the supermarket, and then she would go straight from car seat to trolley seat. Have found that buying the pram and the car seat separately is cheaper than getting a fancy travel system. Plus I think the silvercross traditional pram looks just gorgeous!!! Trying it out made me feel like Mary Poppins!

And I agree with Slickbird - the lie flat option is very important, both for back protection and because of the few cases of SIDS in car seats.

BTW, I had my scan yesterday morning and little bean was very wiggly and excitable. Everything was ok, and my nuchal fold measurement was within normal parameters. I was amazed by how much you can see, as last time I had my first scan at 18 weeks when obviously the baby is so much bigger.

I too have been thinking I've been feeling movements from bubba - almost like a shifting pressure on my right hand side. Sonographer said it was definitely possible as my uterus is over to the right hand side and pushed quite far forwards towards my abdominal wall. Sounds a bit creepy to me but apparently it's all perfectly normal!

Good morning ladies.

Hooray, 2nd trimester is finally here! I also feel like I have felt some flutters but cant be sure.

My belly has literally grown over night. I was round and plump on monday. But yesterday morning it was so obvious that I was pregnant and I couldn't get my work skirt done up which I had worn the day before!

Anyone else still have morning sickness or am I the only one now?

emma2617 · 10/09/2008 10:11

babyinbelly...I am so jealous! I want to look pregnant!!!

Im not suffering MS, but didnt really suffer early on though! I just still have immense tiredness, constipation and extremely itchy nipples!!!

Boobz · 10/09/2008 11:21

Still looking decidedly non-pregnant. Have put on 2 lbs since I found out I was pregnant and that's it... think it's going to be a while for me yet.

Still exhausted. But enjoying pregnancy yoga class which I have started going to. Anyone else do yoga for another pregnancy and notice the difference?

A

laweaselmys · 10/09/2008 11:53

I have started to notice that my belly is not so much bigger but a different shape. It's sort of pulled round to the front... It is interesting, but I'm hoping to put off having a proper belly for a while yet as I haven't told work, and have just found out one of my colleagues is expecting a grandchild the week before I'm due... I think work is going to get very awkward over time off. Oh well. Not much I can do about it.

I'm still being ill at nearly 13wks. Anyone got any tips about hydrating things I can have in the morning? Drinking water makes me sick...

Mandy73 · 10/09/2008 12:35

Hi all,

Fascinated with the pram discussion, I'm such a novis.

Lizziemun I love the pram you have, will def. be test driving that one. I walk lots too, is it OK to get in a car though?

So happy all your scans seem to be going well. My Nuchal one is in 5 hours, hope your luck rubs off on me.

I swear I've started feeling stuff moving , looking/feeling quite non-PG though.

Have a good day all. x

jollyjoanne · 10/09/2008 13:22

Mandy 73 - good luck for your scan x

I have to say all the pram stuff is really useful this is going to be my first baby and I haven't got a clue. So I think I may have to go and have a look at what there is.

I am feeling decidedly fat already and have already had to move on to my 'fat day' trousers almost full time(I'm approx 14wk+4). But not actually looking pregnant.
