Hi folks, just back from having had my scan today! It was lovely, watching the baby move it's arms and legs - and it did a big stretch whilst we were watching!! I took my mum with me as dh was working, and as the baby came into view on the screen it suddenly occured to me that she had never seen such a thing before - she found the whole experience very moving and emotional. Nurses were lovely, very chatty - seems to be the case here!

I also saw the consultant, who thought that my pelvic pain could be related to my ligaments stretching and the fact that the baby is so far down in my pelvis at the moment - he seemed to think that as the baby grew and the uterus moved up the pressure may be relieved slightly - so very good news! I have got a second scan booked, this time in Inverness, to check for birth defects (we have a few on both sides of the family), at 20 weeks.

I also had a look round the unit, which is tiny - four beds, one delivery room (with birthing pool), and one baby resus kit. It looked very comfy though fairly basic and old-fashioned, but I'm quite happy with that! I asked what happened if they had two births going on at once, and was told "well, it's never happened yet!" - they only have about 15 births a year in this unit! (They deal with a lot of home births though).

Sorry for waffling on, still very excited!

It sounds lovely Miaou, really small and homely - its amazing that we will all be going through the same experience roughly at the same time, in such different surroundings.....

Absolutely beachy. I think it's lovely that we can all share our very different experiences with each other rather than living in our own "bubble" of personal experience.

Forgot to say! I'm a week further on than I thought I was - am now 15weeks and 2days according to my scan - which gives me a due date of 31 July! However I am sticking with this thread as I've got to know you all now! We'll see who gives birth first, me or Eulalia!!

Bluestar, Kizzy and Miaou what great news about your scans - many congratulations. Miaou, the maternity unit sounds a million miles away from my previous experience at Chelsea & Westminster in London. It's great to hear about different parts of the country, even if it does make me jealous.

Has anyone told their workplace yet? and what was the reaction..... The reaction at mine is not going to be good and I am dreading it so much...I might put it off until I start to explode and look extra fat

to all who have had scans. Today I decided to go back to being my normal happy self and stop worrying about the baby. I feel like I have wasted quite a few weeks in some sort of depressed funk-type thing. Still flying high on my friend's news.

Azure--some of us have already bloomed. I've already gained 11 pounds and can only fit into the skirt that I stretched out last pregnancy. Am in maternity clothes already. I did the same thing with Colin, though, and gained about 14 pounds in the 1st trimester, and then 1/2 pound in the 2nd before piling on the weight in the last. If my boobs hadn't gotten so big, people could tell I was pregnant already

Welcome, Erinleigh. I've been feeling the same as you. And although I've already had a scan, it was quite a few weeks ago, and due to a bleeding scare, so I won't be getting my next one for about 8-9 weeks. Twins, wow. I thought having a 17 mo. old was tiring enough.

colinsmommy- How much weight did you gain altogether last time. i was 12 stone with son christopher and gained 4 stone altogether which lead to induction with pre-clamp AT 36 weeks.i havnt lost that weight since and was 16 stone, and size 18 at first appointment with midwife.
so weight gain in this second pregancy 7 years later is a big NO NO...

colinsmommy · 09/02/2005 20:03

Kizzy-You'll have to forgive me, but since I'm an American living in America, don't really know stone, will have to give it to you in pounds. I started out at about 131 lbs, and got to about 177 lbs at the last dr. visit, I believe. I had a 9 pound baby, and all of the nurses and dr. commented on what a big placenta I had, too. But it really bothered me, because it wasn't like I was eating junk, I ate a lot of fruits and vegetables, and tried to cut out most sugar and cut back on a lot of fat, but still gained that much weight. I was very lucky and lost it all between pregnancies, but am concerned about weight gain this time, because I don't want a bigger baby, and from what the dr says, 2nd babies are generally bigger, and a large weight gain might make a larger baby. If I have a much larger baby I will either have to be induced a few weeks early, or have a c-section, because I'm just not built to have much bigger of a baby than DS, I guess.

Oh they won't be horrid to my face, but it is just extra hassle they don't need at the mo. They will have to work out who will do my job and they've had a lot of resignations lately so there aren't that many people to go around any more. Still, keep saying - not my problem.......

haha beachyhead are you sure you dont work with me, i was asked if they could tell the other boss so they could bring interviews forward for the other vacant posts!!
I would tell them as soon as you can that why they will have more time to decide what to do an may be nicer and appreciate it more - how long are you planning to work for/are you intending going back?
colinsmommy think that would make you just over 9stone to start and 12 and half stone at the end i was about the same with ds but he was only 7lbs3oz - i can understand why you wouldnt want a bigger baby [scared face]

Hello all... I do want to book a scan ASAP b/c I am still having that feeling of: am I actually pg or have I just gotten lucky and stopped having periods?? I am waiting till after tomorrow; I have a friend coming round who is a midwife - she's going to advise me on how to go about it this time, as I really really want a home birth. Drs not keen on HB last time as I had twins but they sort of weren't keen in the first place, so worried about what they could say this time, after they know I had late-term cholestasis with the twins.

Hi all really pleased about the positive scans

i can feel definate movements! i have been sitting here catching up on all of todays posts with these little flutters. Can't get the grin off my face. I just love it so much.

welcome to the new members.

Miaow- hope he is right about the pelvis.

Hi Dazie and welcome to the thread. KMS, how wonderful about the flutters. I'm 12 weeks today, so am looking forward to an immediate stop to any m/s. Unfortunately I seem to have picked up another cold. I'm relieved to have now made it past the points were I miscarried previously, so hopefully all is well. Booking-in appointment tomorrow with the midwife - appointment cards says "allow three hours". Hmmm, 2.5 hours of waiting and 0.5 hour with the midwife I suspect. DH has to be on call to pick up DS from nursery if I don't get out in time.

It's not going to go down well at work for me too when I announce the news. We are going to have a major systems implementation which will need a lot of work (60 hour weeks have been mentioned) and a lot of change management. This project has been talked about for the last 4 years and has constantly been delayed. The latest implementation date is mid-June. I'm hoping it will be delayed to, say, August 25 (my due date) so I can escape all the stress. It's actually been a running joke between my boss and me for the last 3 years that I will time my second child for this - looks like it may come true (snigger).

Morning all!
Welcome to Jac, Erinleigh and Dazie and congratulations!

Azure, sorry to hear about your panic attack, hope you have had a better few days, and congrats on getting to the 12 week stage, it must be a relief.

Colinsmommy, wonderful news about your friend

Kate you really have been in the wars, poor you, glad that the shop staff were lovely. How are you keeping apart from your mis-hap, is the chicken pox scare over now?

Eulalia, I'm just up the parkway from Tesco and we've often said that when/if we move we'd like to go a bit further out into more country area.

Bluestar, Kizzy and Miaou, really happy that you scans went well. Miaou, good news about your pelvis, fingers crossed

Josey and Miaou, I'm going to be at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, hopefully in the midwife unit all being well - really don't like hospitals and want things to be not too medical - ironic as married to a DR! Belford sounds lovely, wonder if I could move in time ?!

Beachyhead, sorry to hear about your back, hope it's not long in mending. I know what you mean about work, mine have been a real pain. Really had to push for risk assessment etc which they only seem to stick to when it suits the circumstances of the unit/staffing level. Both my managers have been funny about things and I'm really just looking fwd to finishing now, which is a shame as I really like my team etc. I'm not planning on going back either.

This is probably turning into a minature essay, so will shut up soon.....
All well at this end, morning sickness seems to be easing a bit - here's hoping. Am off to have lunch with a pg friend of mine who is just back from Oz and due in March. Looking fwd to some good baby chat as is the only person in RL that I know who is expecting. She is also going to the ante-natal classes that I'll attend later, so hoping to get a heads up.

colinsmommy -

I felt a movement last night too! I was amazed - I honestly didn't expect to feel anything for another two to three weeks. Dh was very excited. we have been showing our scan photo to the dds, who thought it looked very strange - they can't quite work out why it doesn't look like a proper photo! dd2 thought it meant the baby would be born next week!!

morning everyone.........

well i have been having freaky dreams and last nights scared me.. i woke up and my heart was racing and i felt like a kid snuggled right up to dp to make me feel better.

i'm suffering with a really bunged up nose and ears, and think it might be partly to do with the fact that i gave up smoking last july and all the gunk is finally working it's way out of my system. biggest problem is that i have had a killer headache for over a week now, it lifted a bit at the weekend and has come back with a vengeance.

i know what everyone means about worrying about not being pregnant and being impatient for the scan. mine is on the 24th so still two weeks to go. my midwife said this one would be free but according to the paper work i was given i have to pay £3 if i want a 'photo' of the baby. has anyone else had this?

nice to see we are still getting some newcomers to the thread too.

i'm just getting fed up people asking me my due date. i just can't wait for my scan so i know whether i am right or the doctor is!!!

take care everyone

We had to pay £2 for each photo from the 12 week scan. I get my due date changed slightly every time I see a doctor!

Report
Azure · 10/02/2005 13:04

Last time we were encouraged to make a "contribution" for the photos of the scan. I don't know what is expected this time. I know of someone whose DP recorded her scans on a camcorder, although that wasn't allowed at my hospital (not that we had a camcorder, anyway). All being well, I don't know when we'll mention the baby to DS. He's moving pre-schools in under two weeks and having an after-school nanny for the first time (well, as soon as we recruit one), and so that's probably enough for him to deal with for the time being.
