I have just been on the phone trying to convince the hospital to give me another sweep next Monday if nothing happens over the weekend. Would like to give it another go before induction.

Sweetbean, hope you are coping alright and that something is happening? Thanks for issuing the much-needed eviction notice to novicebaby - I showed the screen to the bump and gave him / her a meaningful hard stare but still no cooperation...

Can I ask if you have had more than one sweep yet? I have just asked the hospital to do a second one on Monday and they seemed happy to do it - as the woman on the hospital helpline said "anything is better than them putting that gel up your fanny" (honest quote!)

I honestly think if nothing happens over the weekend novicepapa and I will be going absolutely bonkers with anticipation!

ampster anally - really?? Oh my Lord!

Well, went and had my sweep at lunchtime and apparently my cervix is very favourable (!) and I am about 1 cm dilated. She had a good whisk around and gave the baby a poke on the head (very wierd!) and then sent me off with instructions to have a passionate weekend

I'm booked in for another one on Monday too novicemama so I think it's completely normal to try and beat the induction, which I've been booked in for on the 5th as well.

I know we're all fed up but really not long to go now - trying to look on he bright side!!

Does a sweep hurt?

hi ampster - having a sweep was definitely uncomfortable - much more so than a normal smear test as they really get right in there and give your cervix a good prod for quite a while. I did some deep breathing to get through mine and kept reminding myself that it will be nothing compared to the approaching labour

Ampster it's not too bad really, I thought it was 'better' than a smear as at least a finger is a bit softer than those lolly sticks they use for smears!
It is uncomfortable but not out and out painful. However I think it depends on the state of your cervix when they try it, if it's not soft or effaced they will have to use more effort which would I expect would hurt a bit!

However I definately feel a bit more 'niggly' and period-like now that I've had one. No sign of a bone fide contraction but I guess it's all going in the right direction

ampster - I've had several sweeps over the years (they gave me loads this time ). It didn't hurt me that much at all, just a bit uncomfortable - definitely easier if you can relax so how much it hurts is down to you really.

pregnabrain I was very lucky with the childcare. I was suspicious things were kicking off on the Monday night so I called my stepmum at 11pm and she came down
(as she was coming down the following evening anyway as I was due to be induced). I went into hospital at 3am but contractions slowed right down and I was transferred to the ward at midday. Labour started properly at 1.30pm and was very full on from the first minutes so I would never have got the hospital with the girls on tow when it came to the real thing.

I must do a proper birth annoucnement / labour thread thingy when I get round to it -Michael is constantly feeding though - I have had about 8 hours sleep in total since Sunday night, thankfully DD2 prepared me for all that two years ago though .

Another birth announcement - my baby Samuel John was born on May 21st at 5am. Bit of a traumatic experience - emergency c section under general anaesthetic and his apgar score was only 2 at birth - glad I was knocked out. He recovered very quickly, but they were a bit worried about him so he was in special care for a week on antibiotics and I also stayed in for a week with a suspected infection. Not quite the first week we imagined. However we're both doing well now and back at home .

I haven't really had time to read all the other posts, but good luck to all those still to pop and eviction notices to all those May babies - you really do want to be born in May!! And congratulations to other new arrivals.

Forgot the important info that Samuel weighed a whopping 9lb 6oz - a real surprise as my bump really wasn't that big... Not sure if he would have fitted out the normal route anyway

Not as whopping as KangaAndRoo though - blimey! Well done for pushing him out, hope he's thriving...

mayx3 - I think I would have been glad to be under GA in those circumstances too. What a relief that all is OK now (and what a whopper!).

newbishad - sorry to hear you're suffering with pain from your tear / episiotomy. Arnica is supposed to be very good to help reduce swelling etc, and lavendar oil in your bath too...I've got mine at the ready. I had a tear last time and dd was only 6lb 4oz!

bbm - glad your childcare stuff worked out ok. lucky you called your stepmum when you did! i can't quite believe you've only had 8 hours sleep since Sunday, although I seem to remember my first week with dd was similar. It's amazing how easily you forget!

fleurie - hope you and dh are building on the sweep's good work.

saw midwife today and she said bubs is so low "it'll practically walk out by itself". Sounds promising! Am still full of cold, though, so actually hoping I have a couple more days to go...am getting ludicrously painful cramp where my thigh meets my belly every time I stand up - anyone else had this? every time it hits, I start doing a manic hopping dance round the room, much to dh's amusement .
