Thought I would take the plunge as I seem to have killed the previous thread . Will put a link on the old thread so you know where to come!

OK, what clothes does a baby need? Family keep asking me what I want, and I have no idea at all (oh dear) what the difference is between a sleep suit, a vest, a baby grow, a romper suit, a body suit etc etc etc! Not only that, but I have no idea which ones I'll want for an autumn baby! I know it's insanely early, but people keep asking, and I want to be able to tell them the right things so we don't end up with useless junk. Anyone got any recommendations for (clothing, since that what everyone wants to buy me apparently) basics for baby for first couple of months are? I'm so unfit to be a mother...

kel78 · 01/03/2008 10:05

well sept is tricky, I guess were all in the same boat. Could have 1 or 2 nice weeks but prob need the warmer stuff for oct and so on. I think im gonna prob get the long sleeves etc and if we have got some nice weather will send dh out for a few lighter things. I wouldnt get too much in 1st size cos they grow so quick and also depends on size of baby. I will prob tell family to get warmer things for 0-3 months and 3- 6 months and I will get a few newborn stuff myself depending on weather at time.

Sorry not much use perhaps someone else has some ideas

splishsplosh · 01/03/2008 10:54

Hopefully, books suggest things like 6 vests, 6 babygros plus a couple of cardigans, and a hat. You can get all in 1 outdoor suits which are cosy and as baby's don't move much to begin with they need to be snug even if it's not freezing.

I think the biggest tip is to ask for some bigger sizes. i found that everyone gave 0-3 or 3-6 months clothes, on top of the things you couldn't resist yourself, so you have tons of things. Then your baby grows out of them and you have to buy everything yourself.

Hope that helps a bit. Why don't you have a browse round some baby shops to see what's what, and what you'd like

mamamufin · 01/03/2008 11:26

Morning all

So glad scans went well . I take it there is just one them leonie, what a relief for you. Could they tell the sex?. I am so excited about my scan, whenever it may be?
Hopefully, I was like you first time and did not know what I needed. I had ds in sept too. I would not worry too much about what to get as I found other people had it covered. Oh but I did not realise there was a newborn size and everything I got was was 0-3 and massive. Dh had to pop the shops the next day and get smaller things. They lasted about six weeks before they where too small. Ds was 7lb born. Hope that helps. Have a great day guys x

potxola · 01/03/2008 12:23

Hi there,
Great news on the scans !!!!!!
I will have my 12 weeks one on monday.

About clothes. With my son I bought too much. What I really need this time is lots of bodysuits, the ones you can open easy, vests, socks, a couple of hats and something like a thick outdoor all in one suit to carry him/her in the sling.

The biggest mistake I made it was to buy lots of blankets: cellular and fleecy in 2 sizes, for cot and moses basket. He never slept well with them. In fact he only started to sleep well when I put him in a grobag. So this time I will buy a couple, new born size. I hope this helps. I just wish someone had told me this when I was pregnant with my first.

I can not believe the pictures of the scan are so expensive. I will let you know how much they charge me on monday.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!

surelyyoucantbeserious · 01/03/2008 14:46

Hello all,

12 weeks today (apparently) and looking forward to scan - one week to go this Monday.

Feeling distinctly energetic and not at all queasy any more. Could this be the start of the good bit??!! Although of course it also makes me wonder whether something's wrong. I guess this is motherhood for you, eh - always a reason to worry!

Rather stumped on clothes for me, not even got round to baby clothes yet! Not sure what bra size to buy but certainly in need of new ones now. Will they get any bigger?? Can't wait to get all clear at scan and go out for maternity clothes. Seraphine website actually has nice looking clothes inc. decent jeans - anyone bought anything from them?

Hope you are all well out there!

becaroo · 01/03/2008 15:07

OH MY GOD.....

Just been to mothercare and have bought some maternity bras.....SIZE 34F

I am only 10 weeks for gods sake!

Also got some maternity jeams from next for £20 which are VERY comfy!

My dh is most amused at my horror of my new nora batty bras.....

becaroo · 01/03/2008 15:10

Nauseous...you can take paracetamol but the main thing is plenty of clear fluids. If you have a high temp it is important to get it down with the paracetamol.

Hope you feel better soon x

I'm having a nuchal fold scan on the 13th, its on NHS here now, (winchester) we only ever had 20 week scans before.
On my letter it says photos are £5 for 3.

Surleyyoucantbeserious- Im 12 weeks tom and I too feel great no more sickness stayed up past 10.00 which is really late compared to the last 7 weeks. My boobs are a little sore but not that bad.

I gave in to temptation and bought one of those dopplers to hear the hb off ebay. I was so relieved to find it at first all I could hear was the placenta but then I found the hb as well

Potxola- My dd too would only sleep well when I bought those sleep bags but dont they have age or weight restrictions on them, I cant remember exactly but im sure they are more for about 3 or 6 months, I will deff have to have a look as I thought they were brill.

Hope the rest of you are all feeling better too or start to soon

mamamufin · 01/03/2008 17:25

Welcome back Starlight . Hope you had a great time despite the sickness.
Thanks for asking after me. I am still plodding on.. very slowly. I remain nauseous and sicky but have strong hours and then depressive ones (if that makes sense.) The end of the first trimester is in sight now .
Think I am going to order some maternity clothes online. I have spent the past month almost in pj's and nothing fits- despite loosing weight. . I am going to do an online grocery shop too as cant look at real food so virtual food might be ok, as no smells etc.
Anyway guys, enjoy your evening. Hope you are feeling better nauseous Hugs to you. x

Starlight its a Ultra Tec PD1, I looked it up on the internet first and it costs about £150 to buy but I had it for £45 on e-bay but there are diff ones up for sale all the time it came with a full bottle of gel as well. When I have finished I will just put it back on then and hopefully get my money back.

All this talk of clothes has got me looking and I like the newborn nightgowns for when they are sleeping so you can just undo the poppers to change them rather than pulling them about to much.

Cant find them in mothercare or anywhere like that, I could only find 1 type and it was on sale in 3 diff shops but the best price was £13.50 which I know is quite pricey. Even saying that I find them good and a must so I will prob get 2 or 3.

The site is for anyone wanting to have a look

Nauseous if you find out what you're allowed to take then do let me know...I'm streaming with cold and the sheer volume of snot is making me feel sick, as if I didn't already.

Hopefully I second the thing about newborn clothes. When I had dd I didn't know there was anything smaller than 0-3m and everything we had swamped her. She was 7lb 9oz and fitted newborn for at least the first month. Bless my MIL for her mercy dash to Tesco clothing, not least coz we were expecting a boy!

Question for you ladies...dd (11m) is covered in a rash from head to toe, worst on her chin and legs. Its just tiny little red pimples (if you passed her in the street you wouldn't think 'take that baby to a doctor!' but we notice it getting her changed) a bit like heat rash, which is clearly ridiculous in north yorkshire in winter. She's also been unhappy and not quite herself for a few days, whinging, crying, inconsolable last night even with her best friend the dummy and crying when we left the room after she'd calmed down. Absolutely the only thing I can think that's changed is that she's had fish fingers, and we've moved from cow and gate 3 to no.4 milk. Is either of those likely to be the perpetrator do you think? She doesn't seem ill enough to warrant a doctor's trip, but she isn't herself and the rash isn't shifting with aqueous cream. Any bright ideas? Sorry for wafflage.

Pidge · 01/03/2008 19:47

carrieon - it's quite common to get a rash like that accompanying a virus - the spots are tiny, but can be plentiful. Both my dds have had this, and it usually clears in a day or two. But if she seems under the weather a check with the doctor is definitely worthwhile.

This first trimester has been soooooooooooo much easier than my other two pregnancies. I've only been incapacitated by sickness in the evenings, and even then it has only lasted a few weeks. I'm 10 weeks and it's already fading drastically. Cue slight panic from me, but am trying to remain calm till the scan in two weeks!

Also I have a significant bump. To the extent that I am having to go for the baggy top look at work, where I haven't told anyone! I guess 3rd time round the stomach muscles have just given up hope.

carrieon · 01/03/2008 21:09

Thanks for the tip Pidge. I fear the 'its a virus' comment from a doctor coz of course there's nothing they can do. I'll take her on monday if she's still not right, in the mean time I guess its lots of fluids and cuddles for the little one.
I also am 10 weeks and with bump, I'm thinking I should crack on and tell people before they work it out for themselves, especially those who notice the large elastic waistband of my jeans!

Kagey · 01/03/2008 22:14

Evening all,

I had my scan last week, and all went really well. Little one to be was wriggling around and it was so nice to see.
