Birth Story

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin Hopefully won't be that long.

Last Tues woke at 7am having mild contractions. These went on all day every 15/20 mins no matter what but weren't particularly difficult to deal with. My community mw came to see me at 6pm for a bp check (routine). Just before that contractions had sped up to 1 every 5 mins. Mw did an internal and said cervix was fully effaced but I was only 1cm dilated and not to go into hospital. But then she checked bp ...

It was raised and the hospital wanted me in. I was assessed and told I was being kept in overnight on antenatal ward. Dh was sent home at 11pm. 2pm he was called back as contractions got stronger. This went on all night. 5am I asked for gas and air so was transferred to delivery suite.

Delivery unit went mad the next day and they struggled to cope. Luckily I had a student mw who was left with me throughout and she was fab. Had a bath at 11am, got out, student mw said - you need 3/4 contractions every 10 mins for it to be established labour ie over 5cm dilated and you're not there yet. She went for a cup of tea and I suddenly wanted to push!! Waters broke with a vengance.

When they came back and I was examined and was ready to go. Pushed for 2 hours. A doctor was called in towards the end as they were worried Megan hadn't come out and I had pushed for too long (but it felt like no time at all) Doctor said he wouldn't intervene as I had done well so far and birth was totally natural. Baby was in a slightly odd position so that's what made it difficult apparently.

Did have 2nd degree tear and yes, being stitched up is painful but bearable. Stitches are not sore now at all. Was uncomfortable for the first few days though. Have taken Arnica capsules. Although they sent me home with pain meds for 2 weeks I haven't needed them.

Whole experience was pretty positive, wasn't allowed a water birth cos of bp being high ut I don't mind cos I've got a lovely little girl. And the best thing about labour is that very soon afterwards you can't remember much of it only the end result

Hello all,

Went to see the midwife yesterday and she said LO was engaged but back to back. Got me worried and I was in argos in no time buying a GYM ball. Bounced most of the evening,

Easy- Have had thrush myself recently. Its absolutely nothing to worry about, just do not ignore it, get canisten cream from the pharmacy or GP prescription and apply to affected area 2-3 times a day and it will disappear in no time. It really should not affect your homebirth either. It is a common occurence in pregnancy, something to do with unequal pH balances [can't really remember though]. I was embarassed about it with first PG becoz I had no idea what it was.

SGK- Thinking about you and Callum, hope you get some answers when you get to see the consultant. I also hope someone will have the decency to move your appt forward.

My fears;

Tearing- had a minor tear with DS but it was left to heal on its own, therefore, I have not had stitches before

ii) I also worry about how long the entire thing will take! Been trying to follow other second time mums' birth experiences and its so amazing how different the experiences are.

LK2boyzma · 14/11/2007 13:27

Silk- Thank you for the birth story, thanx for sharing that with us

thelady · 14/11/2007 14:09

SGK: just to let you know I'm thinking of you and hoping you get answers sooner rather than later.

A bit peeved at the mo due to suddenly going from "we'll keep an eye on things, but basically everything's OK" to "right, you're not going beyond 40 weeks" with no reason for the change that I can see.

Does anyone know where I can get foetal measurement curves from? The powers that be will not tell me how big this awkward blighter is (1st baby, 37 weeks, not engaged, and apparently 95th centile) and frankly I'd rather know.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 14/11/2007 15:20

Hello lovely Nov ladies,

just to let you know Muckers has been taken into hospital to be induced. She had an ante-natal appiontment yesterday, her BP was up, protien in urine, she'd been sick and had some swelling. They sent her to hospital to be monitored where they did some bloods. Her bp came down whilst at the hospital so they sent her home last night. The hospital rang this morning though to ask her to come back in with her bags etc... as her liver function was showing 4 times higher than it should. I had a text to say that she thought they were going to start induction today.

Wooooooo Hooooooooo and a little for her!

Hope everyone else is well. xx

Mrsjaffabiffa · 14/11/2007 15:25

Jarm, boys nappies are a doddle, yes, you have to lift bits to clean but there's no holes. They do have a great aim though when they pee! always as you take the nappie off and normaly straight in your eye.

RGPargy · 14/11/2007 15:26

Thanx for letting us know, Mrs J!!!

Good luck Muckers!!!!

littleoldme · 14/11/2007 17:20

Easy - Hope everything is going well

Silk - Thanks for sharing your story. It's great to read about such a positive experience.

LK Hope the bouncing is a success. i've had lots of thrush too. The MW prescribed canesten cream and pessary with instruction not to use the pessary applicator. Cleared up mega quick. tea tree in the bath really helped too.

Mrs J - thanks for letting us know about muckers. They are coming thick and fast now!!

What are you all most looking forward to post birth?

Smoked salmon, gin and tonic, being able to see my lady garden and running up stairs just c'os I can !

JARM · 14/11/2007 18:55

Good luck mucker!!

Most looking forward to....

The baby! The smell, the cuddles, the adorable stage!

No more heartburn, being able to bend in half again and put my own shoes and socks on!

A very LARGE malibu and coke!

mrsjetson · 14/11/2007 19:34

Congrats MrsJ!

Cant wait for the details!!!

Nothing happening here, am giving up even thinking about this baby making an appearance any time soon despite the docs and midwives reckoning i wouldnt go to term...... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr why do they get your hopes up!!!

Hope everyone else is ok xxx

RGPargy · 14/11/2007 20:46

Evening girls!

Jarm - lol @ boy nappies. I'm a bit like that about girl nappies. Dont have a clue!!!

Silk - thanx for sharing your story. I love reading everyone's birth stories! Keep 'em coming!

Loopy - lovely idea re the birth stories! Might even do that myself. I sympathise re the screamer. DS was the same so i'm nervous about that too. I'm sure we'll both be fine tho.

LK - hope your bouncing sorts out LO's position! I'm a bit worried too about how long it will take. This is my second too but i've got a 17 year gap between this one and my first so i really dont know if this will be like a first labour again or in fact if it will be like a second (quicker) labour!!

LOM - lol @ running up the stairs. I sometimes still go to do that on the rare occasion i have some energy. So yeah, that'll be nice to be able to do that!!

Mrs Jetson - ooooo congratulations!!! Looking forward to your story!!

congrats mrs j - you must have arrived at the hospital a day after i left

and hello little jemima

sorry about no caps am typing one handed

Easywriter · 14/11/2007 22:30

Congratulatons MrsJ!

I am gutted, nothing doing at all and I feel quite guilty for dragging sis and DP out of work today for nothing. It all fizzled out early this afternoon.

Let's hope something happens soon..

Looking down the list there are quite a lot of us who are ovferdue aren't there? I need to be a liitle more gracious about it.

Blummin' hard though.

aikigypsy · 14/11/2007 22:49

Bump is rock hard and covered in tea and food stains. I haven't looked at mn all day because I'm so tired of being pregnant, which is a big change. I got something like a contraction about 2 hours ago, and have been on-and-off crampy since then, but find it really hard to time anything.

My mother arrived last night, so I don't have to cook tonight, which is great! Just got a call from my grandmother who can't wait to hear the news. Can't even wait for the friggin' news to happen!

Congratulations MrsJ!

Those actual births are piling up. Every time I see a new baby I have a little talk with my bump about how good it is to be OUT OF THE WOMB!!! I have an ultrasound and non-stress test booked for Tuesday if she hasn't buggered out by then, and have agreed to induce on the 26th if nothing happens before.

I had my last prenatal yoga class last night and exchanged phone numbers with a couple of the women there. One of them is due tomorrow and we're revving up to fight over who gets the labor and delivery room with the tub (only one at the hospital). We'll see!

Sparkly, I hope they do work out what's going on with Callum and get him appropriate treatment.

sparklygothkat · 14/11/2007 23:24

The consultant's sect. phoned me today, they have moved Callum's appointment to the first one of the day, to give the doctor more time with us, if this means tests etc I don't know. But it does mean that they will be doing full checks I guess

revelyell · 15/11/2007 05:06

thats good news SGK, i imagine time to ask all the questions and get answers is pretty welcome at teh moment! lots of luck for that session.

so ive given up sleeping for the night (again). some homeopathic remedy called mag.phos sorted the restless legs and arms thing but now every time i am dropping off to sleep the baby does this movement, which feels like a kind of grinding pain, against my internal organs which wakes me up with a sharp shout! after hours of these well timed squirms i have given up trying to salvage any sleep out of tonight!

i feel really guilty though as am feeling quite unhospitable towards LO at the moment. He's so far engaged, hardly moving at all cos he just has no room- my bump is ALL baby, and now clearly fighting my other organs for more room, why doesnt he just come out!?! feel not very loving right this moment, if im honest, after hours of this pain.

BunnyBaby · 15/11/2007 07:35

Yippee I finished work yesterday - more time for MN - am now 38+1 Yay!

silkcushion · 15/11/2007 09:28

just a word of encouragement for those of you feeling like crap. it is really worth it once you have your squiggly wriggly gorgeous baby in your arms. i'm loving it and she's crying whilst i type this and i'm still loving it.

littleoldme · 15/11/2007 10:16

Glad to know I'm not the ony one who had rubbish night. I woke up about 2 having full on BHs which stopped after about an hour but by then the adrenaline was going and I couldn't get back to sleep. grrrrr

Silk - Am deeply delighted to hear that you are loving being a mummy

Bunny - can't believe you've been at work for so long Get those feet up and tune into Jezza.

Sparkly - Sounds like they know how worried you are and giving you proper time. Would it help if you went with a list of things to ask ? I always leave the docs not having asked the things I intended to, particularly if I'm worried.

Easy - Bummer about your false alarm but can't be far off now. next time I'm ordering mine from the stork.

RGPargy · 15/11/2007 10:29

Morning ladies!

Easy - sorry nothing happened yesterday. Surely it's a sign that something is happening, slowly but surely?? Fingers crossed for you luv. How frustrating!

There are quite a few on the list who are overdue, but alot of those aren't regular posters so they could have had their babies by now!

Aiki - great stuff re not having to cook and having your mum there with you. Bless your granny for being excited. It's just a waiting game now isn't it! Hope the ultrasound goes well next week.

Sparkly - glad the consultant's office phoned you back. At least if you have more time with him you can fire him with questions and get answers. Perhaps you could write down your questions/worries so that you dont forget them when you're there? (sorry if i'm telling you how to suck eggs). Good luck with the appointment. Keep your chin up and step away from Google!

Revel - Happy Due Date!! I sympathise with the lack of sleeping. I've been woken up by baby giving me a stern kick/punch in the guts. It did make me wake up with a start! Last night, my tummy was making really weird noises. I think they were only gurgles from my intestines, but they came at regular intervals and were loud enough to wake me up and make me wonder if "this was it". Alas, it wasn't and i'm still here waiting for baby to arrive. Today would be really inconvenient tho as DP is working a 2 hour drive from home! I'm sure tho Revel, that you'll feel very hospitable towards bump when he finally shows up, especially when you can bend in the middle again and put your socks on with ease!!!

Bunny - yay at mat leave!!! Left that a bit late didn't you?!!

Mrsjaffabiffa · 15/11/2007 10:31

hello again

muckers was given the gel last night, she was woken for monitoring at 6.30am and it showed she was having small irregular contractions, head still not engaged and no dialation yet but something has satrted. they won't give her any more gel now, it's just a waiting game.

Will let you know more as I do.
