stre · 15/10/2007 17:49

hello, i have just come across this thread, nice to hear others in the same boat as none of my friends have babies yet. im due to have my first baby on april 28th and i have my first scan on wednesday. im a bit confused about antenatal classes, people have told me to book them really early because they get full up and ive been told that the ones at the hospital are alright but a bit dry and the NCT ones are really good for meeting people with babies. but im moving house before christmas to another town and possibly another hospital, any advice? do i really need to book so soon, seems a bit over the top to me? i live in islington now and am moving to loughton in essex.

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 15/10/2007 17:53

Did antenatal classes on the NHS with DD and they were ok, v informative and met people there too - think maybe it depends on where your having baby. Didnt bother with DS.

Mangaed to give myself a bit of a scare over the weekend, spent best part of Sat out in garden doing some fairly heavy work - no probs. Woke Sunday with some bleeding that lasted best part of the morning . rang mw this am who asked to go in and check even though it had stopped, she was so nice, checked the HB and then did another check scan to be sure. Def a much better service from the NHS so far living in Cheshire compared to the home counties when had DD. Anyway thankfully all ok but bit of a wake up call to slow down a bit I think.

NB - in stretchy trousers and have a hankering for jelly sweets (not going to help the weight gain!!)

lemonaid · 15/10/2007 19:22

I did both hospital classes and NCT classes with DS. My NCT class would have been great for meeting people (and we did all get together when pregnant and a couple of times afterwards) but because of the vagaries of NCT regions all the others lived within a few streets of each other while I was two bus rides away, so I didn't really stay in touch for long. The NHS classes, which I'd expected to be less social, were actually where I met more people that I still see and who I got together with regularly once the babies arrived. Both were good classes and I am glad I did both. In our area you definitely would need to book NCT classes this early (or possibly even earlier); NHS classes were discussed with the midwife at my booking appointment and she put me on the list so I got a letter later in the pregnancy.

Not doing any classes this time round.

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs,

I saw your post on the VBAC support thread in Childbirth!

So, to all ladies who might be considering a VBAC please know that you would be very welcome to come and discuss your Birth Choices here

I am a VBACer and there are a few of us, most notably Lulumama, who are passionate about VBAC and informed birth choices, and we love to support others on their VBAC journey.

Best wishes to all!

jaq39 · 16/10/2007 09:15

Hi, this is my first posting on mn, been watching for a few days and decided to take the plunge.
Have DD - 14 years and DS - 14 months.
EDD is 14 april but going by other two can probably expect LO two weeks late

Not sure how to add my name to list for April!

jaq39 · 16/10/2007 09:24

Had scan last week and everthin looked fine. You only get one scan in Edinburgh, but as I am really ancient (39!) am getting my blood tests next week, wasnt overly concerned about there being any problems with DS (there wasnt) but I find myself worrying a lot this time, especially at night when I cant sleep

Sheds75 · 16/10/2007 09:32

Denny185, I'm moving further into cheshire in about a month so will be doing my ante natal over there, however not sure on which hospital yet, warrington or chester I'm inbetween. do you have any info on either hospital? or are these out of your area of cheshire? thanks

Sheds75 · 16/10/2007 09:36

morning all, am fianly going to have to conceed and buy some stretchy trousers my work ones are getting rather uncomfortable.... any suggestions on the best places to buy?

Soph73 · 16/10/2007 09:48

Morning all.
Welcome jag39 and ste
Denny185 pleased to hear you & beanie are OK, just take it a little easier

ToastAddict · 16/10/2007 10:39

Morning!

Just to let you know that my scan went fine last night, so have finally gone public.

Nuchal scan was good, risk dropped from 1:480 ish to 1:2500 ish, so very happy.

But, not to ever stop worrying....... I know that there is nothing I can do about this, and I can't beelive I have been so stupid - on holiday last week, I ate a couple of goat's cheese salads. Call it pg brain, but I got it into my head that goat's cheese was OK. Then it started to niggle me, so I looked it up, and sure enough, it's on the banned list.

It was in a salad, so grilled, but not melted through, so definitely a no-no. I realise that there's nothing I can do now, but I am now paranoid I have eaten listeria/toxoplasmosis-infested food!!

Stupid, stupid girl!!!

Anyway, rant/moan over, I'll just have to put it behind me and be more sensible for the next 6 months!

EllieG · 16/10/2007 11:29

I wouldn't worry toastaddict - my friend ate EVERYTHING you shouldn't and has a lovely little baby (as did my mum because no one knew about all that then) - I don't think a one-off matters that much if everything is OK at scan

TheMaskedPoster · 16/10/2007 11:39

Morning toastaddict - congrats on your scan

ref the goats cheese - I too have thought it was ok and occassionally nibbled on the odd goats cheese salad. It is hard to remember everything that you aren't supposed to eat / drink / enjoy - so as long as you're pretty careful I can't see any reason to beat yourself up (so to speak).

Hope everyone else is ok.

I woke up with a blimen headache this morning and in the end I have had to take a paracetemol (which I hate doing) - seems to have helped, but I can still feel it .

Soph73 · 16/10/2007 11:48

Toastaddict - Congrats on scan My DS is now 5 & rarely sees a Dr because he´s so healthy and the only things I cut out were alcohol (although treated myself to a glass of wine every now and then) & cigarettes when I was pregnant with him so don´t beat yourself up too much

Soph73 · 16/10/2007 11:50

tmp - I feel dreadful too, feels like my head's full of wool, I can´t breathe although my nose won´t stop running and have a stonking headache - haven´t taken anything yet though but may have too soon
{{slink away feeling sorry for myself}}

Kirbo · 16/10/2007 11:57

My nose is running and my throat is starting to hurt - I'm guessing the worst and thinking it's a cold. As I'm new to all this pregnancy stuff - is there ANYTHING I can take for a cold/sore throat? I know I can take paracetamol - does this include lemsip?

ToastAddict · 16/10/2007 12:18

Thanks for the reassurance

I'm getting headaches too, have taken a few paracetamol, when I really can't stand it any more.

Putting my pharmacist's hat on for a minute, paracetamol is fine in pregnancy - the statement is "it is not known to be harmful in pregnancy" which is the closest anyone will get to saying it's OK!. I would try to avoid Lemsips, as they contain phenylephrine - this should be avoided in the first and third trimesters, although the second isn't mentioned in my brief scan of the books, suggesting it might not be a problem. It is a decongestant, which I know may make you feel better, but if you can avoid it, I would, but that's just me. How about a nice hot lemon and honey to wash down the paracetamol?

Obviously, it is your decision, and sometimes, you need to take medication, it's all about the risk/benefit to you and baby.

lemonaid · 16/10/2007 12:55

Squeeze half a lemon into a mug. grate in about half an inch of ginger root (or just put in half an inch of ginger root and bash around a lot with a spoon until it gives in). Add a tablespoon or so of honey and top up with hot water.

It does make you feel better (probably all in the mind, but hey...) and you can drink as much of it as you want. I'd still take the paracetemol, though.

I think I'm about to go down with a cold and sore throat too.

Had my booking in with the midwife this morning was there for 2 1/2 hours talked though everything she was really nice. also we have now decided on names I know a tad early but hayho

A Girl will Be Louise Ann (Ann After my mum)
