podglet · 20/09/2007 14:50

Hi Starlight, of course I remember you! Hope you are ok and LO too. When are you due? Can't find you on the stats list?!

Re scans - I ended up having 5 with DS. An early one at 9 weeks, then one at 12 weeks coz I fell over and banged my bump, the normal 20 week scan, then scans at 34 & 36 weeks coz I had lots of fluid and they wanted to check on DS, The later ones were cool coz you could really see his face

Doubt I'll get so many this time round. As I am nearly 8 weeks already, think I will miss the early one (history of m/c) but we are going to have the 4d sexing scan with this bean which will be exciting!

Ok, am off now before I ramble on too much. Hope everyone is ok.

walkingwomb · 20/09/2007 15:02

Possibly a stupid questions - I am only 7.5 weeks. Does it matter if I lift heavy things? We need to move our sofa out and there is only DH and me around. Don't want to hurt the babe, but not sure if it will or not.

WW xx

No I think you will be fine, you just need to be careful. It won't hurt the baby, your muscles are stretching so you could hurt yourself that way. I am lifting DS who's 12kgs and DD who's 23kgs, just bend your knees before you lift anything heavy so you don't hurt your back. But if you can get a helper, that is what would always be recommended.

Hi - Aquababe, thanks for enlightening me re the acronyms.
Aussiesim - had to laugh when you asked which part of Sydney i am in - if only!! - i'm in Sydenham, s. east London!! May be moving to w sussex soon.

HI!!

Today my DP and I had our 6-7 weeks scan after a few pains and the baby is in the right place with a heart beat. We're over the moon. It already looks beautiful to me!!!
xx

Hayleyandbaby · 20/09/2007 16:32

I've got no DC apart from lil bump

jennyjane · 20/09/2007 17:30

Hey Asiscgirl - I'm in Kent and have just been told that I don't get a scan 'til 20 weeks either - amazed - also just been told that even though I am ancient (41)and probability is 1/85 I don't qualify for a nuchal translucency scan unless I am either carrying twins or have already had a child with Downs !! I did point out that if I didn't get my first scan until 20 weeks, it may be a bit late to qualify for the NT scan even if it was twins !! (no, no history of twins, so unlikely but...) How about everyone else out there ??? you all getting scans ok ??

JackBlackRoady · 20/09/2007 19:45

hi all, i am still really suffering from sickness too! really sympathise with you all.
preggy pops help but i get awful stomach ache and sickness in evening when tired. bloody teaching.
i'm having scan on weds for dating as not sure on periods. then i know i have one at 12 weeks. seems weird you don't have one until 20 wks.
must go to bed now. what stupid pregnancy book says have naps during the day? don't they know about work? at least i can't fall asleep stood up, on a conference call sounds proper embarrassing!
bye to you all xxx

IndigoBlue · 20/09/2007 22:19

Hi, hope you're all doing ok and not feeling too sick, although I had a quick look through the messages and looks like a lot of you are!
Haven't been on the past few days as have been moving house but have just got internet access back today.

I've had a constant slightly sick feeling for 4 days on the run and no energy which isn't great for trying to get the house sorted, poor dh has done a lot of unpacking so far! DD has also just come down with a cold which I hope I don't get!

deepblue · 20/09/2007 22:37

Hi All, please can I join too?

Had a scan yesterday which put me at 6+5 EDD 9/5/08. This is our first and v excited! Saw the heartbeat which I can't get over seeing as it's only 7mm big - that's smaller than my pinky fingernail! We are amazing!

I'm feeling alright so far - can't sleep properly so v tired and feel dreadful in the morning but no sickness as yet.

Lol jackblack totally agree. In my area they run (the only) aquanatal classes between 9 - 11 am and pregnancy yoga between 3 - 5pm .

Chuffed · 21/09/2007 09:06

20wks seems late to have the first scan in my opinion as the dating is more accurate earlier on as the markers are more obvious. If you are worried about it I would push, push push, book yourself in. The NHS resources can't be that bad.

Feeling pretty nauseous but not sick, that feeling of general unwell and not quite being able to put my finger on what I need to make myself feel better. With dd it was salt and vinegar crisps, with ds it was anything sweet (sugar, sugar, sugar) and this one seems to be cheese and rice crackers so far?

Well better go spend some time with dh. Catch you soon - hope all of you who are worse off sickness wise it passes.

hotpotmama · 21/09/2007 12:23

Anyone else feel like the back end of a bus already? Well I do. Am hoping its because its my third and already well stretched etc.

Nothing to do with all the bread, crisps I am having to eat every hour to stop me feeling sick!!!

asicsgirl · 21/09/2007 12:31

Hi Jennyjane, I'm on the ancient side too (40). We get offered a triple test around 12 weeks(in fact everyone does) which is something, but it isn't as accurate as a nuchal fold scan. Last time round I'm kind of ashamed to admit we paid for a private scan. It was immensely reassuring though.

Here in Calderdale the prevailing ethos seems to be 'if you're low risk, we intervene as little as possible'. They are v v keen on home births too...?!

bunglebennett · 21/09/2007 13:06

Hi, We only got a 20 week scan when pregnant with my daughter even though I had had problems before (ectopic and missed miscarriage) I ended up paying for a private scan which was £120. The midwife's attitude was, if it's important to you, you'll find the money but not everyone has that option. We've moved now so this time round we'll have the 12 week scan. Doesn't seem fair though that people are missing out.

jennyjane · 21/09/2007 13:32

I'm going to pay for private scans again this time too - can't help feeling though that I want to stamp my feet and say "it's not fair - I paid tax for 20 years for this !!! - and all I get is a list of centres who offer private scans at £150 a pop." - probably will actually say this in fact - suspect the midwife will respond with something along the lines "well the only plus side to being this old and pregnant is that you can afford to pay for private scans" Huh!

mumtomadison · 21/09/2007 14:16

Hello to all the new Mummies to be and congratulations!!

I can't believe some of you don't get the 12wk scan, don't they realise how anxious a new Mum is for the first 12weeks let alone waiting 20wks, it's just reasuring to have the 12wk scan i think, don't blame you for wanting to pay for it, i'd have to do the same.

I had my first scare yesterday, i woke up in the morning and bled and it was dark, i immediately panicked coz it was the same amount as when i had a incomplete mc before. My husband came straight home and we managed to get a scan at the hospital which showed a little heartbeat, i cried with relief as i'd convinced myself of the worst. They said it was just one of those things and couldn't give me a reason why it happened.
I did bleed with my DD later in my preg a few times so i suppose this little bean is gonna be the same.
Just shows tho if you do bleed it's not necessarily bad news, we can't help but panic tho.

Hope you are all well besides the sickness.

Look after yourselves

mumofk · 22/09/2007 03:23

bunglebennett-I think that's awful you couldn't get a reassurance scan. Especially when I work in NHS and the RUBBISH reasons people put down for reason for scan- ESPECIALLY when the mum will say, oh I wanted a scan so the dr just said I had to say x.
Its just so upsetting when EPAU is full of ladies for 'no' reason-sorry, wanting a scan is a reason, but when there's 7 slots and 14 women desperate for a scan that day (this week we got booked up for 2 days- go to your GP have pain and bleeding, prev hx of problems but you've still got to wait ?!!!) It makes sense to me that its the ones with bleeding and pain should get 1st dibs, not 'I feel like a scan today, can I buy a picture, do you know the sex yet'?! Sorry, rant.
If you are worried about pain/bleeding (and GP not available/helpful/getting anywhere), go to AE. You probably won't get a scan straight away, but you will probably get assessed better- don't know about your GP but mine doesn't 'do' womens bits, you get sent to the nurse for that! Once you area assessed, if they are really worried they will keep you in until you have a scan. If they aren't so worried, they will let you go home with a scan appointment arranged. If they really don't think anything is happening they will 'try' to reassure you and send you back to GP/midwife. Grrr, still cross!
Mum2mads, so glad you've seen a heartbeat!!! Makes it so much more real, and reassuring if they can't see where bleed from, it really seems to 'just happen'.
asicsgirl - I'm in your neck of the woods! Scary might see you in RL for scan.....hopefully you'll be lucky and get someone else. We've (almost) all had the theory training for NT, but equipment isn't up to scratch for us to practiceto qualify- and recent research sounds like it really isn't all its cracked up to be. I can explain more, but its a bit technical and not sure brain cells up to it at this time.
I'm up with heartburn, which gaviscon has helped but now feeling sick again and dreading but thinking about eating. Seabands 24 hrs doesn't seem to make huge difference!
Take care all, hope your sleeping well

Mitchell81 · 22/09/2007 09:54

In aberdeen we get scans at 12 and 20 weeks, due to my DD having a genetic condition, we also got scans at 8 weeks,26,32 and 36 weeks. And I am sure it will be the same with this pregnancy. I see the midwife
on the 1st October for my booking in appointment.

Kanga44 · 22/09/2007 10:49

Hi all. Ive just joined as the 'hcg levels' thread really helped me out this past week.
I'm due 18th May (added myself) this is our 2nd child. we have a dd who is 2.2 years and is our little fighter...although this will be our 2nd fighter as I bled last week (think I lost a twin...2 sacs...one empty) I am signed off work...feet up...ppl running around for me...heehee making the most of it. feeling a tad queasy every now and then but bring it on!!!!! congrats to everyone x

Oh how could I forget!!! tut tut

had a scan yesterday and saw the flutter of a heartbeat...im 6 weeks today!!!!

I go for another scan on 2nd Oct.

deepblue · 22/09/2007 11:19

They've only just started giving 12wk scans in my area. We don't have nuchal fold scans yet but they are apparently imminent in the next couple of months.

I'm so relieved they've changed things now as there's nowhere we can go for private scans. A colleague had one booked recently in Manchester but her flight got cancelled and she missed it. I'm not even sure that they'll give early scans if you've had previous problems.

AussieSim · 23/09/2007 11:36

Hi ho I am 6 weeks tomorrow and my bump is officially showing - no.3 and I never really regained any muscle in my tummy I guess. How embarrassing! 2 weeks till my scan!

Welcome Kanga44. Is there any chance that you are in oz? I lost a twin between weeks 6 and 8 with my last pregnancy too but went on to have a healthy ds2.

Jenny Jane, that does seem weird that you can't get a scan till 20 weeks. In Oz everyone can get the NT at 12, everyone the 20 week, plus if you are 37 or over you can get the CVS. I would nag them! I will be 39 when this one is born so will be having the lot!

Westers · 23/09/2007 13:15

Hi

Um, not sure how I join - will just posting on this discussion do?

I'm due on 20th May and it's my first and I'm a bit scared really about lots of things. We were planning to start trying for a baby next year, but whoops, it's happened earlier than expected, which in terms of my work situation is pretty disastrous timing!

Hey ho, at least the getting pregnant bit was considerably easier than we had feared it might be!

I have a question - how do you decide when to tell people? Only my husband, me and the GP (and you lot!) know so far.
