With ds1 I didn't know i was pg until almost 4 months, I was out drinking all the time as his sperm donor was in a band and did many gigs a week. I was carrying drum stands case and drums, climbing to set up light riggings etc. And I gave birth to a healthy boy. I think that while alcohol can have an affect on our babies it is not the only thing, I think if our bodies carry a gene, hormone, illness etc then our babies could also carry it.

This time round i hardly drink BUT I do smoke.....

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/07/2007 09:53

oh didn't have a very good night last night...
First had to take ds to hosp due to rash all over his back turns out he has a viral infection which is in his throat, tonsils, ear and now in his eye which is causing the rash. SO spent time in a&e with him. Then came home, dp had come home from work and got us from hosp. Had a hot chocolate n went to bed, got up an hour later as i had bad stomach ache just made it to loo and chucked up everywhere....DP was an angel and came n cleared it up lol i was soooooo ill...

Dunno what caused it as I was fine afterwards just lo then decided to lay in an awkward place and make stomach hurt more grrrrrr.

OOppsss just read this maybe TMI soz if anyone feeling queasy after lol

MrsFish · 19/07/2007 10:12

Thanks J20 - will get yours in the post this afternoon Have a good weekend.

MrsFish · 19/07/2007 10:13

LES - hope you are feeling better now. I had awful heartburn last night and was so hot... I slept in the spare room with the windows open and naked, it was bliss

greedygreedyguzzler · 19/07/2007 10:20

just a quick post to whoever was talking about maternity swimming costumes!.....i looked for a decent one for AGES, bought 3 and took them all back and then i went into M&S and bought a normal size 14 with longer length body!........it is quite nice, and fits so much better than all the maternity ones did! and it was only £20 rather than about £45!

alicet · 19/07/2007 11:16

Quiet day at work today!

Thanks for your supportive comments nellie and thanks too for the warning dal - I will not go back today to see what else she has written! Need to maintain my sanity!

Lisa hope GTT not too unpleasant....

LES - sorry to hear about your ds. Hope he recovers quickly and you're OK too...

Don't have the beenfit of cut and paste so will check in a min I've not forgotton anything!

Can't remember who it was that mentioned about feeling sick again but I feel awful today and haven't been great for a few days. thakns goodness we're not busy or I would really struggle. here's hoping its just that hormonal surge I remember being mentioned and I don't have to put up with this for another 12 weeks!

Mumpbump · 19/07/2007 11:42

Morning all!

Lisa - I had to have a GTT last week. I agree it's complete madness to ask pg women to fast... By the time I got to the hospital, I was feeling sick and blood tests make me feel faint anyway. Horrid... Hope yours has gone okay...

Re: eating cheese, I think you're not allowed to eat unpasteurised cheese because of the risk of listeria. Most French soft cheeses used to be unpasteurised which is why they say not to eat Brie, but nowadays you can get pasteurised Brie anyway. So provided you check it is pasteurised, you can eat what cheese you like... Dippy eggs don't pose a problem for me - can't stand them!!

J2O - how's the knitting coming along?

Apricott · 19/07/2007 12:06

Hi everyone!

Quiet for me at work today too, so have had a bit of a catch up on here.

LES - hope your boy is getting better.

Floria - great news about your friend! And tentatively about your Dh's attitude to the amnio - keeping my fingers crossed for you on that one

Ejt - sorry to hear about your pain getting worse and worse and about horrid gp. Great news though about the MLU.

Designerbaby - try to think positive about breast-feeding. I'm almost afraid to get started on bf'ing cos I'm afraid I'll come across as one of those unreasonable hard-liners. I'm not, honest! I just found that after a very difficult week or two (because of engorged boobs and matching split nipples - sorry if tmi I'm really not trying to scare anyone - quite the opposite) breastfeeding was the easiest and loveliest thing ever.

J20baby - at least consider slowing down Glad your daughter is looking more willing on the change of school front.

Everyone else - big waves - too much info for rubbish mushie brain to cope with replying to all.

As to where we all are - I'm just outside Swansea - very near Mumbles, of Catherine Z Jones fame. What I want to know is where is bloody summer? DD back from Germany yesterday - she'd had a lovely time. Got an award for smiling the whole time. I wish she was like that at home where she's more often busy practising her moody teanager techniques! Have my 28 week appointemnt with MW next week. Seems like absolutely ages since I had any contact with anyone on the caring side about this pregnancy. Good luck and commiserations to those having glucose tests. I was spared that in the end.

Right back to filling recycling bags with contents of office - someone else is moving in when I leave on materity so it needs a bit of a clear out.

See you all later x

Apricott · 19/07/2007 12:34

Oooh, I've just had a look at that FAS thread. Haven't read it all (for obvious reasons - like having an office to clear ) but Alicet - you were FAB!

FloriaTosca · 19/07/2007 14:05

Alicet; I agree with everyone else that you were wonderful on the Fas thread. Well done to EJT and Mrs Fish for getting involved too.I stepped away I'm afraid....for the sake of my blood pressure.

LadyES; so sorry to hear about your DS, poor little love, I hope he gets better soon.
Greedy; I had the same problem...maternity swimsuits looked worse than awful...then tried on last years M&S polka dot number and it looks great

Apricott; your DD sounds like the way my mum described me as a teenager; "outdoors angel, indoors devil"; she'll grow out of being a pinta at home and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have inplanted all the right values so she is well behaved when not actively rebelling against you. Hope you get to enjoy the satisfaction of cleaning out your office too...its like spring cleaning...I cant face it, hate doing it but love the result and the smug complacency of it being all over and done with.

Hi everyone else, sorry if I've missed you out.

I have had 2 days of builders...yesterday putting in a new lintel (the old one had lifted the bricks and blown out the pointing because it hadnt been maintained by the previous owner), and today replacing the old condensation ridden aluminium, draughty patio doors with gorgeous french windows. I have also been cleaning;...clearing out the utility room so the plumber can fit the new boiler tomorrow...the dog is mightily dischuffed at me disturbing "his" room! DH can move the furniture in all the other rooms so he can fit the TRVs. It will be good to have the house guaranteed warm and draught free before LO arrives.

Hope every one is having a lovely day...its just so good to see the sun for a change!!!!

ejt1764 · 19/07/2007 14:37

v. quick news from me (I'm afraid I got bogged down in the FAS thread again...)

  • have picked up wheelchair ...
  • am about to go and shove analgesia pathway up GP's nose (gently, as I need her to write me a scrip for some stronger painkillers)

See you later!

Mumpbump · 19/07/2007 15:20

Can someone enlighten me as to what the FAS thread is?

Thanks!!

Apricott · 19/07/2007 15:24

It's in the 'am I being unreasonable' section - something along the lines of 'am I being unreasonable to be shocked that pregnant women in the UK don't think it's appalling to inhale a droplet of alcohol from time to time' featuring a very bombastic poster who insists that complete abstinence is the only way. I found it searching for 'FAS'.

Apricott · 19/07/2007 15:25

it's very very very long...

Mumpbump · 19/07/2007 15:26

Aah - I have been avoiding that one as I thought it was likely to be contraversial!!

designerbaby · 19/07/2007 15:42

Goodness - just read/skimmed the FAS post - what a load of old rot from Leati - not come across her before, but think I'd rather she stuck with exclusively US sies where they might have more of an apetite for her gumpf.

Anyway have posted my twopenn'th over there and run for cover before she attempts to have me taken into care and have my mother locked up...

Have to say, feeling quite proud of Alice, Fish and ejt for your forebearance... you go gorls

Going for massage and facial tonight which DH got me for my birthday... [blissed out emoticon]

Can't WAIT!

Love to you all - have now wasted whole lunch hour getting annoyed with stupid americans so don't stand a chance of catching up...

Big hugs all round though...

DB
xx

Mumpbump · 19/07/2007 16:27

Man! It has taken me almost an hour to skim read the FAS thread. Nice to see that the evangelical spirit lives on in the States...

Mumpbump · 19/07/2007 16:28

And I'm probably going to get warned about excessive MN use now!!!

alicet · 19/07/2007 17:27

Apricott and Floria ? not sure I was fab just thought I was a bit ranty but thanks for saying so!!!! Not sure I can face going back to read whats been happening since last night for my sanity but might venture over again later!

Apricott - Don?t think you come across as a hardliner on breast feeding either! I think some people take to it easier than others and although I found it very hard to start and was on the verge of quitting I?ll totally agree with you that its worth persisting as once it works its lovely. You?re right though that its one of those topics (like alcohol and pregnancy!) that can bring out the worst in people?.

Floria and Greedy ? wish I had discovered the joys of M&S swimmies. I have a hopelessly unflattering one from JoJo Maman Bebe that has a massive horizontal stripe under my boobs and makes me look ENORMOUS! Trying not to be vain and keep it but getting tempted with another?.

Floria ? sounds like you?re nesting like mad hon!!! Nice one ? hope its fab when its all finished!

Ejt ? hope the GP did her job and gave you something decent for your pain?

Anyway will be back later ? just off to pick up ds from nursery?.

Pebblemum · 19/07/2007 17:40

Hello Ladies

Buffy has asked me to let you know why she hasnt been on here.

Her waters started to leak yesterday and so she was taken into hospital where they found she has gotan infection at the top of her cervix, a water infection and low iron levels. They arent sure how much water she had lost and so she was kept in overnight. They gave her steroid injections to help mature the baby's lungs. She was having contractions and with each one leaked more water and so she was kept on a monitor overnight and given a mini scan. She was given painkillers which caused her to have palpations as well, so it was a very stressful night for her.

She is now back home but under strict instructions to rest. She has to go back next week so that they can measure the fluid around the baby unless she has another leakage in the meantime.

Although the contractions have now stopped they still think there is a high risk of the baby coming quite soon .

Im sure she will be back on here when things settle down for her. Ive got everything crossed that the baby hangs on in there for quite a while yet

greedygreedyguzzler · 19/07/2007 17:42

read the FAS thread or at least most of it! alicet you were VERY good i have to say! maybe its cos we know you are a smart cookie anyway, but your posts certainly seemed a lot more intelligent than the OP!!! quoting all that research REALLY bugged me!!! how does she know the quality of the research? it is probably mostly crap anyway, i get annoyed when people misinterpret research..........a little pet hate of mine after having done several research projects of my own at university and seeing the 'quality' of some other peoples!!!

FT - M&S are fab aren't they?!!!! and DON'T get me started on builders!!! we are 7 wks into our extension and it is CHAOS at my house!!!!! we are now living out of about 3 rooms cos the other ones have walls missing or are full of crap!!!....................has anyone read 'a squash and a squeeze'???? my dh keeps saying our house is like that!................the builders will gradually make us live out of less and less rooms and then suddenly say we can use the whole house again and we will think it seems HUGE and they wont have even actually done anything!!!! (makes no sense at all if you haven't read the book!!!)

alicet - buy another cossie!!!! only £20 from m&s and you will still be able to wear it after!!!

j20baby · 19/07/2007 17:45

wow, buffy, good luck mate and hang in there lo and REST!

hi to everyone else, have just skimmed through, going to have tea and then getting sorted for going away tommorrow, will try and pop in later, hope your all ok x x

OP posts:
greedygreedyguzzler · 19/07/2007 18:02

pebblemum - just crossed with you. poor thing, i hope her lo manages to stay put for a little bit longer, give her our love

MrsFish · 19/07/2007 18:07

Buffy - hope you get lots of rest, thinking of you x

J20 - tops are in the post, I added another 3 that are too small for me, I won't be offended if you don't like then ;)

PolarMummy · 19/07/2007 18:24

Ok I am discovering I am very easily led by you ladies at the moment swore I wasn't even going to read the Alcohol thread but then you guys kept talking about it and so I had to read it!! Didn't post though as agree with 90% of the people on there and my tuppence worth wouldn't have added any value! I have already shared with you guys that I haven't drunk during my pregnancy and Dal your reasoning sounds absolutely sound to me I think if I was to sit down to a glass of wine right now I wouldn't be able to stop myself drinking the bottle having said that I just cannot resist taking a swig or two of DH's Guinness or Beer (for my iron levels of course) According to the FAS thread this makes me a bad mother, oh well I guess I had better get used to the idea now as I am quite sure its not the only thing I have done which puts me in that category!

Big waves to everyone, will try to catch up on everything when I get home from work.
