New thread!

Sorry, don't know if someone else was planning to do this. Just noticed how close we were to being cut off on the last thread.

I think the thing I find strange about my friends is that they are all a lot older than me. I’m only 26 but all of my friends are at least in their mid thirties. Most of them have kids of their own, some are a little older but one friend has a one year old! I think it’s less that I’m going to have a baby and more that I’m pregnant so can’t drink etc.

StargazyDrifter · 27/02/2019 15:11

Really interesting discussion.

I overheard something on TV last night by Clive James the author, where he was taking about how important it is to enjoy a period of transition for what it is in its own right, rather than for where it might get you. Easier said than done!

thedust that's so true about being more motivated at work, I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's very true. And I have also been planning my KIT days and KIT buddies already (LM is likely to move on, and isn't that helpful anyway). Though I wonder if I'd actually feel the same about all these plans come April/May next year!

Kentishgal yes still have the hypermesis, particularly bad again this week, I think made worse by tiredness. It's a lot less than in the first trimester, but sometimes still bad enough to keep me away from work or fun stuff, by which I really mean baby shopping.

Giraffe888 · 27/02/2019 15:51

I’ve spent most of my day off today about when I return to work, hours and childcare! When should you start looking at childcare?

cravingmilkshake · 27/02/2019 17:34

Does anyone have or is anyone buying a next to me crib?

Or are they alternatives? Obviously s first timer here - are they worth it? I like the look of them.

Giraffe888 · 27/02/2019 17:43

@cravingmilkshake my best friend is lending us their snuzpod which is the same thing. She said it was great for her DD

RooKangaroo · 27/02/2019 18:08

We were lent a Snuzpod last time and I loved it. Not available this time, so need to sort one, or something like it.

They're so expensive!!!!

Hoping to find a decent second hand one.

@cravingmilkshake We’ve bought a next to me crib, not sure how it will go but have been recommended it by friends. We’re intending on having a snuzpod lent to us, but only for use during the day I think.

StargazyDrifter · 27/02/2019 19:09

cravingmilkshake I've been wondering this too.

Would ideally like a Snuzpod, especially because likely to have an ELCS and it has the collapsible side wall for easy sliding of the baby in and out of bed for feeding. But they're expensive and may not be needed for that long, all thing considered.
We are also right on space. I've therefore also been thinking about using the cot bit from the pram (which is certified for overnight sleeping if we get the Silvercross) and some sort of (safe!) stand. No real conclusions on online forums as to whether this would work. Any thoughts on that from the seasoned mummies please?

StargazyDrifter · 27/02/2019 19:14

On a different note, some of you might remember from a few threads back a mumsnet effort to feed some thoughts into a Parliamentary Committee's work on a child's first 1000 days (incl pregnancy). The report is now out, below is a summary of its recommendations:

publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmhealth/1496/149609.htm

Good to see it recommending 121 midwife care and better MH support, amongst other things. If you dig around in the annexes on the main page they also have an overview of everything mumsnetters told them in one document, which I thought was very thorough of them.

ReginaPhalange89 · 27/02/2019 19:38

@cravingmilkshake we have a next 2 me crib and i loved it with our last baby. It's so great being able to see the baby without having to get up to check on them (which is constantly in the beginning because trust me, you worry 😂 ) . Also great for night feeds especially if you're breastfeed.

I also think it helped with my wee one self settling. I'd put her in there and lie on the bed and she'd settle herself , then gradually Id be able to just put her down and leave . Meant she transitioned into her own bedroom without any issue ! Or at least I think it helped , could just be a fluke.

They are expensive , you could get one second hand though . Or there might be similar cheaper alternatives. I seen one on Groupon before , possibly kiddikraft was the make ? Not sure how much it was but it was definitely less than a next 2 me

TwinkleDay · 27/02/2019 19:46

@StargazyDrifter I don't understand how the government/parliament can publish something as vague as that right now... can't even get bloody brexit sorted!

Jxtina86 · 27/02/2019 19:58

I'm signed up to a gazillion apps which send me so many emails with offers on baby paraphernalia and there is always a deal on the next 2 me or similar - usually between 40-50%. We might be lent one from my BIL as their little girl will be in her own room by the time our baby arrives.

Also I've signed up to Baby Box Co - www.babyboxco.com - you complete a short course and quiz and they send you a box suitable for Baby to sleep in overnight. My friend did it with hers and keeps it at her parents for when they're babysitting. Think at the moment you get some Lidl baby stuff as well as the usual mattress it comes with as standard.

Capybaras · 27/02/2019 19:58

I've bought a second hand next2me for £75 and it's in great condition. Had so many people recommend them so thought it was a must!

Had a really busy day in work today, so having a full-on sofa evening rather than going for a swim!

StargazyDrifter · 27/02/2019 20:09

TwinkleDay it's not the govt, it's a group of MPs who focus on health issues and publish advisory notes to govt, essentially. The full report on that page has a lot more detail. But it's looooooong.

cravingmilkshake · 27/02/2019 20:28

Great- thanks all. I'm going to go for the next to me crib. It has excellent reviews. Will order tomorrow (payday) 😃

BeckyButterfly · 27/02/2019 20:45

@Jxtina86 I picked up my Baby Box yesterday actually 😊 I thought it might come in handy.

ReginaPhalange89 · 27/02/2019 22:02

If anyone in Scotland doesnt already know , all babies born in Scotland now get a free baby box! It comes with loads of things in like sleepsuits, nappies, toys, blankets, bath thermometer , breast pads etc . I haven't had one before as it was introduced after I had my last baby so looking forward to getting one this time !

cocodash · 27/02/2019 22:20

Another one who has a next to me.
Got ours 2nd hand on Facebook marketplace.
The girls baby didn't settle in it and it had been used about 2 months. It's in immaculate condition. Got it for 50quid. Bargain!

BeckyButterfly · 27/02/2019 23:02

@ReginaPhalange89 that’s really good! Not that I’m in Scotland but good for those who are 😊

AineFreckles · 28/02/2019 10:31

Morning, I’m a bit late joining you on thread 8, but i’ve only just found out about this.

I’m due on 18th July, so halfway at 20 weeks today. It’s my first baby. Feels like things are becoming serious and real when you join mumsnet! x

BeckyButterfly · 28/02/2019 12:12

Hello and welcome @AineFreckles 😊 I hope your pregnancy has treat you well so far!

ReginaPhalange89 · 28/02/2019 12:16

Welcome @AineFreckles! And congrats. Do you know what you're having or is it a surprise?

Kentishgal · 28/02/2019 12:29

Welcome ainefreckles. stargazydrifter I can imagine how horrible that is, poor you. I'm seeing my midwife next week (21 wk check?) So will mention again about the pgp because some days it's incredibly painful to get up and walk. Otherwise I will go to the doctor - was just trying to avoid keep going to the GP - I feel like I should be given my own parking space lately!!

LavenderBelle · 28/02/2019 12:41

Welcome AineFreckles

BeckyButterfly · 28/02/2019 13:06

@Kentishgal I feel the same about going to the docs! 😂 I should have them on speed dial!
