@toastfiend 'said in tones of absolute horror' 😂 these men do make me laugh 😂

LittleKitty1985 · 31/08/2018 09:56

@ballanj Are you sure you want to overshadow someone's birthday celebrations by announcing your big news? They might be annoyed at you

cardboard33 · 31/08/2018 12:13

@badbadbeans my husband is the same. He's naturally very cautious and a pessimist by nature so if he had his own way he wouldn't do anything/tell anyone at all until the baby was born. And then he'd be worrying something would happen, so still wouldn't want to tell people. This is our first baby and he hasn't really engaged with it at all and keeps saying things like "we won't be buying/doing anything until at least 30 weeks" ... And I'm like well a) it could be here by then and b) we need to do things before then otherwise so will go mad... I spend my life planning so I feel very out of control at the moment as there's things I want to be doing (primarily research into things that even if we lose this baby will still be useful) but feel like I can't as he refuses to engage with me about it. It was the same when we bought our first home, he wouldn't let me even look at furniture until we exchanged incase it fell through.

The above makes him sound very cold and mean, which he definitely isn't...we just approach things very differently!!

wordsmithereens · 31/08/2018 12:58

Interesting that others have had similar experiences with DHs. Mine hasn't gone so far as to say we're not doing anything until x date, as he's generally more willing to go with the flow. But he's definitely been quite disengaged at points, a bit like he's blocking himself from getting in case anything goes wrong. I found it quite bewildering at the beginning, until I worked out the underlying anxiety.

But to an extent it's normal perhaps - the pregnancy is a lot less real for them, because they don't experience the symptoms, so it's more abstract? Also, so many men still aren't raised to be in tune with their own emotions, so they may not even cotton on to the fact that part of it is that they're anxious.

Hopefully once we get bumpy it'll be a bit harder to deny! :D

BadBadBeans · 31/08/2018 13:06

@cardboard33 ha yes my DH wouldn't buy anything till I was gone 30 weeks either. It really annoyed me because I felt like I was having to squash my excitement down to accommodate his cautiousness. I've learned since then though that I need to do what I need to do just as much as he needs to be cautious, so I am now happily taking bump photos and starting to think about what we will need for the new baby. I think the miscarriage I had gave me a certain confidence in a strange way - in that superstitiously not buying anything is obviously not going to change the outcome of your pregnancy! I actually have two little Christmas babygrows stashed in my drawer for my November baby that wasn't meant to be. And I don't mind that I have them. I'm glad I allowed myself the little bit of excitement that led me to buy them. And DH doesn't know I have them and he doesn't need to know, either. If you want to start researching stuff then I would definitely go ahead and do so - then you will be so knowledgeable by the time your DH comes round to the idea of buying things that you'll be able to persuade him to get exactly what you want. Muahahah!

@ballanj how lovely that you have such a close work team. I'm sure they will be thrilled by your news - good luck!

Wineandchoccy · 31/08/2018 13:24

I don’t think it becomes real for the man until you are puffing and panting in the labour room there life doesn’t really change and unless they start eating for 2 their bodies don’t change either

Bluebelltulip · 31/08/2018 14:09

My DH is being more cautious too, last time we didn't tell anyone until after the scan and planned to do the same this time but my bump is making it impossible so I've told some friends and they know not to tell him they know.

MrsLCW · 31/08/2018 14:22

Glad it's not just my hubby ladies. If it was up to him wed tell no one til baby was here!
Had to convince him to tell our families today after our scan and we're now measuring 13+1!!
Here is baby long legs showing off this morning!
New due date of 7/3/19, induction likely to be around 14/3/19 xx

ballanj · 31/08/2018 14:28

@LittleKitty1985 not at all. My work friend's birthday is tomorrow and just a small group of us out for lunch today. I told my team the minute I got into the office and the birthday girl was so thrilled and cried! I've got a great bunch of friends here so count myself very lucky.

ballanj · 31/08/2018 14:29

What a lovely scan @MrsLCW and what long legs! Congratulations!

wordsmithereens · 31/08/2018 15:10

@badbadbeans Totally with you on that approach. I can be quite cautious in my own ways, but have learned that suppressing the enjoyment and excitement doesn't make things hurt less when they go wrong. There's always a risk so you may as well enjoy the highlights along the way!

melissa112 · 31/08/2018 15:33

Lovely scans @ballanj and @MrsLCW. Congratulations!

SquirtlesMumAgain · 31/08/2018 15:53

I think I am much more cautious than DH. He wanted to tell family but I wasn't ready, the early bleed has scared me and I'm still not convinced it isn't going to be bad news on Tuesday even though I am so sick. Silly really

@toastfiend a friend of mine took great pleasure in winding his missus up with Aliens references.

My DH didn't want to say anything to anyone, even yesterday before the scan he said we should keep quiet longer, then he saw the scan and couldn't wait lol. Men eh?

@MrsLCW that's a fab scan pic - I'm so glad everything is ok.

@SquirtlesMumAgain I completely get that, I'm keeping everything crossed for you that your scan shows that everything is progressing nicely.

puravida31 · 31/08/2018 16:52

@squirtlesmumagain it’s not silly at all, you’ve not had an easy first trimester and it’s completely understandable that’s knocked you a bit. I really hope things are now plain sailing for you, and all is healthy and well on Tuesday. We’re all rooting for you and bean x

TheWanderlust · 31/08/2018 17:07

I'm like you @wordsmithereens and the cautious one. My OH is wayyyyy more excited than me at the moment which is a little bit odd. He wants to buy everything like.... yesterday! Despite spending hours googling and researching I literally can't bring myself to actually buy anything until after Christmas/ January sales.

Shampooeeee · 31/08/2018 17:12

Congratulations for all the lovely scans.
That’s so nice ballanj.

We went out to a concert in the evening last night and I’m so tired now. DH has just informed me that he’s going to the football with his friend tomorrow night. He doesn’t even like football! All I want is one relaxing weekend where I don’t have to do any solo parenting. He came home early today and then sat on the sofa while I did drawing with DS Angry

Nightmanagerfan · 31/08/2018 17:16

Hi all, great to see so many lovely scan pix and good news! My husband is very cautious too after a previous loss, but at 11 weeks I'm getting more excited and want to share it with him - I do understand his reticence though.

I've been thinking about maternity clothes - having never got this far before! In my head I have this idea that I'll have a stylish capsule wardrobe and look swish and put together at all times... please humour me!

So what are the essentials? So far i'm thinking:

1 x casual jeans; 1 x smarter trousers for work
5 x dresses (I wear dresses a lot), I think a couple of my pre-pregnancy dresses will do for up to second trimester
3 x leggings 3 x tights
5 x maternity vests or primary cheapy longline vests (would that work?)
5 x long sleeved maternity tops for weaning under things
3 x tops i can wear for work
1 x cardigan (warm)
1 x maternity coat (off ebay probably as not made of money)

Presumably some pre-pregnancy cardis/jackets etc will still fit. Does this sound ok or am I missing anything? I also quite like the idea of dungarees, but I'm almost 40 and not sure I can pull them off Grin

Nightmanagerfan · 31/08/2018 17:17

*Primark, not Primary

HidCat · 31/08/2018 17:49

@Nightmanagerfan I think your list is pretty much there. Maybe add knickers (may need a bigger size / different cut later on) and comfy bras.

peonylover22 · 31/08/2018 18:01

Congratulations everyone on their scans.
@Nightmanagerfan what about a maternity skirt? I found them pretty useful last time - can get some cheap jersey tube ones from H&M etc.

Wineandchoccy · 31/08/2018 18:16

@Nightmanagerfan A bigger dressing gown and nighties. Primark do nighties with buttons at the front which are great for breastfeeding

Wineandchoccy · 31/08/2018 18:19

Oh and thinking ahead my feet swelled after I had given birth I had to send my Mum for a pair of shoes in a larger size to come home in

Nightmanagerfan · 31/08/2018 18:20

@hidcat yes big knickers! Hadn’t thought of those (I presume some cheap supermarket multipacks will do). @peonylover22 great shout re skirt. @wineandchoccy is the dressing gown for hospital? I don’t own one and wouldn’t have thought of that. Thank you. Also good shout re nightwear
