Hi all, sounds as though you have all had a great day. Sputnik, that is great news - but keep your feet up!! Lilkel, I can totally understand why you want a cs - well done on fighting your corner.

We've been out most of the day and now have friends coming around for dinner. Fortunately they are bringing curry .

Have a great evening everyone.

Dumb question alert.........
Are breast pumps and bottles all compatible with each other? Can you get an avent breast pump and tommee tippee bottles? Once you express out what bottle do you store it in? Is it the one that goes with the breast pump - then transfer it to to bottle you want to feed with when you need to?

As my midwife told me not to get a breast pump and to express by hand(?) I doubt she'd be much use if I asked her.

Dontknowmyarsefrommyelbow · 28/04/2007 19:51

Daisy - answer to your question below is....go for it and do both!

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 19:53

not sure is th answer to that question....some I looked at said they were 'compatible' with other wide mouth bottles, but not sure if the Avent pump will work with the Tommee Tippee bottles. but, saying that I've bought some storage bags which you put in the pump bottle before you express as they can be labelled and stored in the freezer much easier.

Your HV is wierd I think...she just wants to get her hands on your boobs . Mine when I had DS was a bit too "hands on" for my comfort levels...

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 19:54

And not dumb at all....

annobal · 28/04/2007 19:55

DKMA - no they don't all go together. If you get an Avent breast pump, you need the Avent bottles...

annobal · 28/04/2007 19:56

Daisy's right - not a dumb question and your HV is strange - why would you express by hand? It would take you ages!

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 19:56

Express by hand???? No, not all breast pumps are compatible with all bottles. I have a Medela pump and Avent and Tommee Tippee bottles, I just tip the milk into a bottle or storage tub. You can put the milk in a bottle in the fridge for 24 hours or put it in a storage tub and freeze it. Avent do some plastic tubs which you can sterilise and put milk in to freeze. The plastic storage bags are shit and leak! I used one once and ended up with frozen milk all at the bottom of my freezer drawer! Not a dumb question btw!!

Have a lovely curry annobal!

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 19:57

Sorry x posted there! Be careful with the bags daisy!

annobal · 28/04/2007 19:59

Thanks H&A. I used to express into the Avent bottles and just put the lid on whack them in the freezer. Found this saved steralising too many things

Off to curry now

Is anyone watching the Joseph thing on BBC1? They are all really awful this week! I might turn over and watch the Grease one instead! One of my friends was on it and got chucked off last week, poor lamb!

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 20:02

LOL, Holly...In the true anal retentive freaky fashion that my life revolves around...I used those little flat clips from the Betterware catalogue and kept them upright in a plastic tub...all catalogued in date expressed order

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 20:07

Maybe I was just being a bit retarded with the bags!

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 20:09

As a slightly topical issue...was anyone aware that the Dept of Health have set out their latest guidleines for formula feeding which basically says that milk powder can harbour bacteria and pre-made bottles should not be stored in the fridge for later reheating. They state that bottles are best made up as and when required with water over 70 degrees which should then be allowed to cool before feeding to the baby. Apparently there has been quite a scare over this in France.....sounds like a lot of faffing to me, and if you are feeding your LO on demand, how happy is he/she going to be to have to wait for you to boil the kettle, make the feed and cool it down every time?

Over to you Derlor....yes, I know you are on maternity leave, but...

x-post...no I was definately being very anal....all part of my "I can do this on my own" coping strategy I had going at the time

Right...baby blanket will be finished tonight if I get my fat ass over to the sofa...time for some wine.

Quick rant before I go......when I got PG, DH and I stopped smoking, him out of solidarity for me rather than because he actually wanted to. He's started smoking the odd cigar....at least to begin with it was once or twice a week, then it crept up to every night....now he's "just popped out" again for the third time today. He and his car absolutely stink of cigar smoke. My veiled comments didn't seem to be making any difference so today I've told him he has to stop before the baby is born or we won't be getting in his car and he'll ber banished to the spare room. AIBU to be bloody annoyed with him?

Hmmmm
I like the look of the tommee tippee bottles but the medula or avent breast pumps are meant to be the best so I need to suss out a strategy!!
Avent breast pump into avent bottles (put lid on and store in fridge / freezer) - then poor into tommee tippee bottles when needed for feeding? Does that sound too faffy?

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 20:16

I've heard this too daisy. I don't heat milk anyway I heat the water. When dd was little I kept bottles of boiled water in the fridge and warmed them in the microwave (I know this isn't recommended, but is fine if you shake it well) and then added the milk powder. I don't know if this is ok, but it saved me throwing milk away if it had been in the fridge too long. Tommee Tippee do these which means you don't have to take milk out with you, you can take water and powder seperately.

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 20:19

My dp does the same daisy!! He gave up smoking and smokes cigars instead. The odd one has turned into a pack every couple of days and now into a pack nearly every day! He's a loser! The worse thing is is that it stinks to high heaven! I am sending him to the dr next week. There is a new drug called champix that I want him to try coz he has tried everything else!

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 20:21

Apparently HandA its a temperature issue...the water needs to be at 70 degrees in order to kill any bacteria in the powder...so yu could do it that way, but you'd still need to heat it to 70 then let it cool before feeding.

I pre-made all DS feeds and it never caused an issue with him, but he had been BF for nearly six weeks and was a very robust wee soul. Maybe if you go straight to fomula and their wee gut hasn't developed any immunity it's more of an issue or if you have a not so robust wee one.

The cynic in me is perhaps thinking that its just another ploy to make FF difficult so we'll all BF

LOL HandA....I call it horny pregnant wife repellant

Daisy - I've just caught my DH havin a crafty cigar whilst doing the bbq just now!! He also promised to give up cos it makes me gag.
He's out there now with a Magners! Fucking selfish knob! Thats what I say!
Who was it that said the other day... 'Am I being unreasonable if I want to rip off my DH head and shit down his neck?'..... Think it was H&A!

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 20:25

I think that is rubbish and you are right thinking it's a ploy to make us all bf!! I'm sure that nipples are far from sterile! If we sterilised everything surely our children would have a horribly weak immune system! Also how is a baby supposed to wait for the water to cool? There will always be times when even if you are bfing you need to feed your baby formula and babies can't wait!!

hollyandalice · 28/04/2007 20:27

Yes I often want to rip his head off and shit down his neck! When I was having ms I couldn't go near him coz the smell made me sick! I think that if I can't smoke then neither should he! I have to goo through ms, getting fat, getting stretchmarks, aches and pains and finally labour. The least he can do is stop smoking! Selfish twunt!

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 20:28

TBH though....I have had the odd puff (well three times) on one of his cigars and quite enjoyed it...it's the smell on his breath (especially when mixed with espresso and lager), hair and clothes I can't stand.
