Evening all,
Nice to catch up on all the chat on here, I’ve had a busy few days! I had an early scan today, all everything looks as it should for now! I thought I was 7+4 from my dates but scan showed 7 exactly. I saw and heard the heartbeat which was lovely, I balled my eyes out! I’m now considering the NIPT testing but there seems to be a lot of options/brands to choose from and my clinic offers them all, I’m not really sure how you are meant to pick one.
PS DH and I are calling this bean Toto (hence my name on here) as we conceived on holiday in Tanzania are Toto is Swahili for Baby Smile

BertieBotts · 07/01/2018 20:17

Aww, that's a cute nickname too! :)

I think NIPT is much of a muchness, so go on cost, or the most things tested for unless you're particularly worried about one particular problem, then you can ask for which one is best for screening that issue.

If you do get a positive on a NIPT it's always best to have a follow up because they can give false positives.

WaitingforToto · 07/01/2018 20:34

Thanks for your thoughts @bertiebotts, I’ll try to make a decision!

Gizzymum · 07/01/2018 20:46

I wondered the same about NIPT and I found different tests cover different things - all seem to do downs, Edwards, Patau, but not all look at gender related conditions or will tell you the gender. Apparently the tests are named differently based on the company doing them. Some have labs in USA whilst others are in London or Manchester (so depending where you live the distance to the lab will affect how quickly you get the results) but most seem to do results within 10 working days anyway.

BertieBotts · 07/01/2018 20:50

Yep. It's in its infancy at the moment so a bit shaky. It's definitely a brilliant advance in medicine though. I'm looking forward to a few years when you can get the whole genome one done - at the moment it's only available in Australia and parts of the US. Unfortunately the currently available ones in Europe don't cover the issues we're facing. So we have a choice of amnio/CVS or no testing at all (I think we're going to skip them because of the risk to the foetus).

Good catch that some will tell you the gender and some not, that might be something you want to check.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/01/2018 21:31

NIPT like harmony and panorama blood tests have something like 98-99%+ accuracy for chromosomal disorders. So if you do get a positive, it's very unlikely to be false. However they will refer you for amino / CVS in the case of a positive result because it's not 100% diagnostic.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/01/2018 21:36

I'm having terrible gas and bloating / uncomfortableness in stomach, no real nausea though. Just very tired after eating, but hungry all the time. Can no longer do up my trousers. 7+1 today and scan in 5 days time! Sorry to hear so many of you are suffering with nausea and sickness.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/01/2018 21:37

Oh btw I have booked my harmony test with a private scan at 10 weeks. Very excited

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/01/2018 21:38

I've got booking in and an EPU scan next Saturday (8+0) for reassurance (following MMC last time)

milney25 · 07/01/2018 21:55

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I'm back to work tomorrow - first time since before christmas. But worried about my long train and tube combo commute!

Can I ask about these extra tests people are booking? When I went for my booking in the midwife said they'd take bloods and test the DNA. Then, (I'm not 100% sure of the correct wording she used) if there were indicators, they'd send it off for further tests. Does something else happen as an additional with the harmony ones?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/01/2018 21:58

If they are testing the fetal DNA in your blood then that is the NIPT blood test but they don't do them on the nhs (unless you are high risk based on nuchal scan / combined bloods - testing for pappa-A and beta HCG). My unit does harmony for high risk women.

milney25 · 07/01/2018 22:02

Hmm, thanks @TheGrumpySquirrel I definitely need to check through my folder and find out. She definitely said something about taking blood and the mothers blood having the baby's DNA.

peterpanwendy · 07/01/2018 22:20

@milney25 are you thinking of the Down's syndrome screening? That's the routine blood test they do (with consent) at the 12 week scan. The blood test taken at your booking appt is to make sure you're in good health x

SpriteGirl · 07/01/2018 22:31

@milney25 May be the rhesus testing they do. My midwife told me they can tell baby’s Rhesus factor from a blood test taken from me as it contains baby’s DNA.

SpriteGirl · 07/01/2018 22:34

@TheGrumpySquirrel I’m having the same with awful bloating and wind and tiredness after eating. Nausea seems worse in the evening.

@WaitingforToto such an adorable nickname

SpriteGirl · 07/01/2018 22:35

Ladies what’s an NIPT? Had heard of harmony but not any others.

Pollyp87 · 07/01/2018 23:39

I need to look into the tests too. Can’t wait for Tuesday to know more about my journey.

I’m sleeping for England once I’m asleep at the moment, but I’m having the hardest time actually getting to sleep, frustrating and exhausting. I’m bloated but was always bloated before so not sure if it’s worse or not, I’ve also been getting heart burn and indigestion after eating. My nausea is definitely at night, after 8pm. Not been sick but could definitely be sick. I get backache too if I’m in the same position too long. I’ve also really struggled with a metallic taste in my mouth, has anyone else had that? I’ve had it almost constantly since Christmas Eve. Horrid!

I’m still devastated about chocolate 😩

BertieBotts · 08/01/2018 07:05

My app has informed me today that the placenta ought to be taking some strain so some of the hormonal symptoms might start to get better - fingers crossed.

NIPT is harmony, basically. And other brands of the same thing.

CaffeineDragon · 08/01/2018 07:28

Hi all - sorry I'm so sporadic! Toddler + jetlag + nausea + exhaustion + baby brain + work - ack!

Re my last birth, it was intense and lasted 23hrs but thinking back I loved it in a way. I've never felt that I've done anything more natural and pure in my life (yes I had gas & air and one shot of morphine sulphate at 21hrs. It's the weirdest experience when your body just takes over. You could have told me he was born out of my bum and I would have believed you. It's all in the lower back/bum which I didn't expect!

Just go in prepared to take it as it comes. Stress is the enemy.

And it did take me a bit to get my head around him being on the outside and starting to feel the mother/child love. But it comes.

Jut came across this - I got it last time - in case anyone fancied trying it. They send you a box of stuff each month, lots of great things to sample. Even got a bottle of alc free wine one month! I didn't sign up until after my 12 week scan, so prob will wait until then if I'm going to do it again. www.project-b.com/

Hope everyone is starting to get some respite from being sick :(

Gizzymum · 08/01/2018 07:51

@SpriteGirl NIPT is non-invasive pregnancy testing.

gkeen369 · 08/01/2018 08:03

Good luck to everyone starting back at work today!!😘😘

Hortonlovesahoo · 08/01/2018 08:34

Good luck to everyone returning to work!

I’m still in the nausea camp. Eating regularly helped yesterday but today I feel like crap again and I had breakfast an hour ago.

@waitingfortoto: love the name!!

I’m waiting on a call back as I’m still bleeding post scan. They’re concerned that if I have another scan it could bring on more bleeding which wouldn’t be too good

butterfly86 · 08/01/2018 08:49

Is anyone else's sense of smell really heightened? Mine is terrible I can barely stand the smell of poor dh and he's not smelly Grin I think he's starting to get a complex! I really need to try and eat more fruit and vegetables my diet is so beige at the minute but just don't fancy anything.

Hortonlovesahoo · 08/01/2018 10:04

Butterfly86: during my first pregnancy, yes! I couldn’t stand certain smells and it would make me fetch. DH was one smell I did like funnily enough!

peterpanwendy · 08/01/2018 10:04

Good luck to everyone else starting back at work! I haven't died yet, though I feel rough! The 25 mile drive was difficult and I felt very motion sick. Only 5 sleeps till my scan.

I hate to say it but the more time goes on I feel I am more anxious than excited. I'm scared about what people are going to think (I know I shouldn't) and I'm really scared about how my body is going to change. I don't know if I am strong enough to give birth then look after a tiny baby :( anyone else feeling worried? I feel terrible feeling this way.

@butterfly86 heightened smell was one of my first symptoms, I find it so difficult. DP are something yesterday and went to hug me and I couldn't because I could smell it so bad. I felt terrible. I don't wanna be a grumpy sick person anymore!
