Fingers crossed this works, no idea how to make a thread but giving it my best shot. Let the May babies continue!

Morning,

Baby Red won't latch so I am having to pump and am now also supplementing with formula as I cannot keep up with her.

I am using Aptimal but can someone tell me am I really expected to make a bottle up one at a time? The instructions say to boil a kettle and leave it for 30 minutes then mix the powder. Seriously? She isn't going to wait 30 minutes!!

Is there another way I can make them up in advance?!?

peasandquiet · 31/05/2017 11:00

Red if you are doing infrequent feeds rather than top ups every feed I'd use ready made.

If she has over 4oz a feed Id consider a perfect prep. One of the best things I bought for my first baby. Equally you can store cooled boiled water in the fridge and the do the same method as the PP by mixing formula with a boiling ounce and then topping up. Measure water accurately as formula increases the overal volume.

Feeding is going a lot better with baby pea than for my first, other than I just can't get the latch right on my left boob. Midwifes have been really good, seeing an NHS lactation consultant tomorrow so hopefully she will be able to help me. Seriously determined to breastfeed this time.

@RedBlu very controversial subject I believe. Lots of MN threads on this but yes apparently that is the safest way though I practice a lot of parents make them up with boiling water, cool them and fridge them in batches. Or used the pre mixed stuff for a bit? Maybe have a look snd a Google and decide what suits you. Perfect Prep machine will do the work for you but also some people think they're not safe either.

WishIWasSleeping · 31/05/2017 11:12

@RedBlu - as @teainbed said, quite a controversial subject.
The pre-made formula is much easier to use and warm in my opinion. We only used formula when she was on timed feeds so we could warm up in advance. Other than that, If you boil the water and seal it in a bottle and pop it in those little insulated bottle bags it keeps it warm for hours! I have heated up DDs breast milk and gone out and a few hours later it's still warm.

I'm finally out of the FUC! Baby Uptown arrived just after midnight this morning, 14 days late! Refused induction at 40+12 so was in for monitoring on Monday, they did a 4th sweep at the same time which was an actual sweep after 3 failed attempts and it got things moving that night so I managed to avoid induction - although the birth didn't quite go how I planned. I'll post it on the other thread.

RedBlu · 31/05/2017 11:41

Yeah, it's not ideal but needs must. She refuses to latch and she is drinking more than I can produce despite pumping eight times a day!

I will try the cool boiled water and mixing the formula with a little boiled and mixing with the cooled. We did try her with the ready made but she didn't seem to like it.

It's a pain, I didn't want to use formula but it's that or a hungry baby

EsmesBees · 31/05/2017 11:58

Congratulations uptown. Good on you for waiting it out. Did you have a boy or girl?

Red there should technically be no difference between the ready made stuff and the powder. Maybe try and different brand of ready made? Good on you for pumping so much. That's a real labour of love.

FoxMulder · 31/05/2017 12:00

Congratulations uptown! Glad you could avoid induction!

FoxMulder · 31/05/2017 12:02

red I don't think you should mix powder with boiling water because it kills nutrients? That's what I gather from mn threads. Have you had any help with latch issues?

teainbed · 31/05/2017 12:22

The powdered formula is not sterile and needs to be made with water at at least 70 degrees to kill any bugs. Whether you use it straight away or cool it.

FoxMulder · 31/05/2017 12:48

Yeah, at least 70 but not boiling right?

uptown8617 · 31/05/2017 12:56

@EsmesBees we had a boy. No name yet though, we had a girls name ready but not a boy! My nephew wants call him Baby Crocodile so it will be that until we can decide Smile

savagehk · 31/05/2017 14:29

Huge hugs red, expressing that often must be exhausting. Have you got a decent double pump?

newbieho · 31/05/2017 15:04

@uptown8617 congratulations and hello baby Crocodile

@RedBlu you're super determined for 8 times a day pumping. Wow! That's really hard work. At the end fed baby is the most important so don't beat yourself up.

1004Rise · 31/05/2017 15:17

I just breastfed in public 😱 Nobody cared!! 😁😁😁

newbieho · 31/05/2017 16:19

Whoop whoop @1004Rise

BouncingBlueberry · 31/05/2017 17:51

Sorry for the lack of update. Baby boy blueberry aka Jacob was born 25.5.17 on his actual due date via emergency c-section weighing in at 8 pounds exactly. Will post birth story on the other thread.

And now I'm finding it impossible to catch up on who has and who hasn't. Love to everyone who has arrived and positive thoughts to those still waiting. Come on babies, get a wriggle on!

RedBlu · 31/05/2017 18:34

Given in and ordered a perfect prep. Although have just managed to pump a full 8oz in under an hour....

I only have a single pump as the double was out of our price range

teainbed · 31/05/2017 18:53

Congratulations @BouncingBlueberry if I haven't said it already!

teainbed · 31/05/2017 18:54

Well done @1004Rise !

beanturnipandspud · 31/05/2017 19:02

Congratulations to the new mummies and gorgeous babies.

I am still firmly planted in the FUC! 40+6, had another sweep today (our third) ... they don't seem to be doing anything! I have booked an induction for next Wednesday, which has eased my anxiety as i now know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

However, will you ladies still accept me if I have a June baby? I love this group and really don't want to have to leave 😪 x

newbieho · 31/05/2017 19:02

Congratulations @BouncingBlueberry he is adorable 😍

teainbed · 31/05/2017 19:35

Of course @beanturnipandspud you'll have to wear a special hat that says 'J' on it though. Wink remembers I was April

Glad you've got a plan though, the end is in sight!!

mrspage1985 · 31/05/2017 19:52

Congratulations @BouncingBlueberry he is a beaut xx

@beanturnipandspud I will be joining you as a June mommy as well. Have done some gardening today to try and get things moving. I may have to resort to sex tonight - have been putting it off as I feel so hot and massive and in no way in the mood, but I really want this baby out!!!!
Xx
