Yeah during my first scan i was made to go for a wee, then go for a walk, eat something, have a sugary drink and then finally star jumps lol!! Nothing made baby move unfortunately hence why I'm back today.

I don't like coffee so that's not an option. Might buy a coke or something before hand just in case it's required!

mynameisntLinda · 17/03/2017 14:18

catrash they will offer another scan as they can get measurements anytime unless you decide you don't want to go back coz they're not compulsory. I got told to have a coffee the first time I was preg and I just laughed at her and said no way coz I totally gave up all caffeine. They were tilting me all over the bed yesterday, wedges under my back and all sorts. I asked if anything really ever works and she said no not really, they just keep trying until they can get something lol.

They struggled getting spine measurements this time. she was tucked up with her feet on her face again, peeping between her legs (think of the "pike" position in diving lol)...i'm now concerned she might actually be stuck like that. hope she doesn't try and come out feet first....or arse first bent in half lol

Kitsandkids · 17/03/2017 14:47

Had a GTT (diabetes) test yesterday and told my levels were raised. 5.7 after fasting but before glucose drink then 8.0 two hours afterwards. Anyone know if they're worryingly high levels?

wildone81 · 17/03/2017 14:58

Just got the all clear at our extra cardiac scan so went and bought our pram...

Bargain of the year from mammas and papas but think we got the last one in the country....

danigrace · 17/03/2017 15:26

@mynameisntLinda haha thanks that does make me feel a bit better!!

Scans overall are optional (same as all the other screening), we've not had any scans or dopplers at all. But if you've opted to have them I'm sure they'll keep looking after you til they have what they need, caffeine or not! Fingers crossed for you for today @CatRash!

natienka · 17/03/2017 15:29

I don't think I have anyone to organise a baby shower for me. Hope it didn't sound too sad ;) it's just not a thing in Poland so my Polish friends won't think about it, and most of my UK friends are work friends (who I'm very fond of but we don't really have that kind of relationship - though actually if I hinted at it I think one of them would take it up!) My plan is to have a mini party after the baby is here; that way I know everything is fine... everyone can have a look at the bubba... now I might feel crap, of course, so I'll probably give it at least a month, maybe two after birth, before organising it. And will definitely ask for help then!

On another note - crikey! Started looking into hiring a doula, and it's around £1500 and up in London right now - yikes. Did not expect that (was resigned to £500). Has anyone used one before or has one now? Is it worth it? I'm so keen to make this a lovely experience and am worried of a breakdown if I start thinking too much about my first birth and the son that I lost (though it was a beautiful birth and I'm so glad I had him, I never EVER want to feel like that again and when I think about it now I just start crying every time!). So that support from a Doula sounds like a great idea...

But:

  • is it then worth the money? (what's included: 2-4 antenatal visits, full birth support, 1-2 postnatal visits)
  • can my husband feel excluded? He was such an AMAZING birth partner the first time, being so emotionally supportive when he himself was in pain and turmoil - could it take away from his experience?
CatRash · 17/03/2017 16:06

Awww sounds like you have a gymnast on your hands. The spine was the clearest measurement she got last week. It was quite funny to see that baby was in exactly the same position which i sleep in.

Just sat in my car as a bit early for my appointment. Listening to The Cat Empire and eating some strawberries and grapes as find that usually get baby moving!

Good news on the scan Wild and live that pram - what a bargain!!

Thank you dani, not to long of a wait left. You're having no scans or dopplers? That's amazing, i don't think i could resist!!

Seahawk80 · 17/03/2017 17:57

Congrats to everyone who had a scan! @wildone81 why did you need the cardiac scan? I needed one as the nt measurement was a bit high - having another one next month as they couldn't get all the measurements last time. I'm hoping that the fact there is 8 weeks between scans means it really is just a precaution.

I'm not sure about a baby shower - am assuming my sisters or friends will organise and I'll just turn up. Love the idea of donations for gifts. My husbands friends wife had one for her second baby and sent a link with all the gift requests - I thought that was really grabby, I understand wanting to fill in the gaps with your first baby but this was just a list of things she wanted - sadly I was "busy" on the day!

Seahawk80 · 17/03/2017 18:00

On the subject of eating/ snacking I got some really nice dried fruit from Waitrose today for my afternoon sugar cravings at work. I know it's full of sugar but it has to be better than chocolate!

DH is out at a fantasy sports thing tonight so I've got some nice bubble bath, a face mask and a magazine (and some 🍫) 😊

Seahawk80 · 17/03/2017 18:06

@ButterflyFree so sorry to hear about your SIL, hope that everything goes ok for her Flowers

Kitsandkids · 17/03/2017 18:13

Baby showers are not my thing. My sister asked me if I wanted her to organise one but I said no.

wildone81 · 17/03/2017 18:21

Heart issues on both sides.husband had open heart surgery at 3 days old, and my dad had an undiagnosed heart condition, do they wanted to do an extra scan just to make sure there wasn't any problems.

Pleased with our pram bargain but mammas & papas won't be getting any points for customer service! Phoned customer services yesterday to check stock levels and was reassured they had 100+ in central wearhouse. Went into store today to order, only to be told they'd sold out, and the stock must be reserved for other customers.. tried to get us to buy the everything but the wheels, even though the bits bought separately where more expensive than the bundle deal we'd gone in for, and then got huffy when we said we weren't prepared to buy the bits without them guaranteeing we could get the wheels!

Left empty handed, and husband phoned customer services to complain, and they where able to sell us the whole bundle over the phone!

First world problems really, but still very irritating!

rhodes2015 · 17/03/2017 18:34

Baby shower isn't my thing either, I got married abroad just me and dh as really don't like being centre of attention... actually really enjoyed my friends (who had twin boys) when it was hers though. Her brother organised it at his house and baked amazing cakes, was a brilliant day.

ButterflyFree · 17/03/2017 18:50

Thanks @danigrace and @Seahawk80 Flowers

Update on my SIL is that her womb is too small to accommodate the ever-expanding baby (she's very petite) and isn't stretching enough, so it caused a pressure build-up triggering the PPROM. They've told her she has to deliver within the next 7 days as there's no way she can continue the pregnancy for longer than that, so for now they're pumping steroids to stimulate as much lung development for the baby as possible to give him the best chance of fending for himself in the neonatal unit. Her due date was supposed to be 3rd July 😥

CatRash · 17/03/2017 18:55

Oh god, hope the little guy is ok. What an awful situation for her and her husband. You will have to keep us all updated. I assume they're going to try and keep baby in there for the next seven days for the best chances?

danigrace · 17/03/2017 19:12

@ButterflyFree gosh so sorry to hear that. Sending lots of love to you all. Really hope everything works out xx

@natienka I think whether it's worth the money depends on the value to you personally. We toyed with the idea of hiring one (planning a homebirth) but I like the idea of just DP and I in our own bubble so we decided against it, but who knows I may regret it!

How did you get on @CatRash? Yes no scans/dopplers at all for us, but mw & DP have heard baby's hearbeat with an ear trumpet ❤

@Seahawk80 I'm also loving the dried fruit! Esp apricots which are supposed to have a lot of iron too.

@wildone81 glad you were able to get what you wanted in the end!

Notyetthere · 17/03/2017 19:15

This could be a dangerous trip. I'm in tkmaxx in bsby section right now! Better check that I have my credit card

OP posts:
DrewOB0 · 17/03/2017 19:34

seahawk I eat a handful of prunes or figs everyday to "help". Eating so much cake though :s

Spindelina · 17/03/2017 20:13

Butterfly finggers crossed for your SIL.

dani don't answer this if you don't want to, but it's my professional field so I'm curious. What's the difference between listening to the fetal heartbeat with an ear trumpet and detecting it with a (non-imaging) Doppler probe? Why are you happy with the first and not the second?

Lallypopstick · 17/03/2017 20:14

@ButterflyFree, I read this today which might be relevant / reassuring. for your SIL

www.reddit.com/r/JulyBumpers2017/comments/5zwts1/we_had_our_baby_at_23_weeks_and_5_days_birth_story/?st=J0E9GX1L&sh=cb6c6b1b

Lallypopstick · 17/03/2017 20:18

On the baby shower thing - we were thinking of having a baby-cue (BBQ) after the little one is born. Just a casual barbecue in our garden, we'll provide food and people can bring their own drinks if they want some. We won't ask for presents, but I'd prefer to do that than play games where we have to eat chocolate out of a nappy.

rhodes2015 · 17/03/2017 20:23

not I'm taking my mum to a new big tkmaxx that's just opened near us tomorrow!
Very dangerous! I've been scanning the baby section on their website today!

ButterflyFree · 17/03/2017 20:28

Thanks all for your messages of support for my SIL - yes @CatRash they'll try to hold off delivering for the next 7 days so the baby can develop as much as possible with the help of the steroids, and then hopefully be strong enough to survive in the NICU when he is delivered.

Thank you for the link @Lallypopstick it was interesting to read, I will share the gist of the story with SIL as she doesn't speak English. I also have a friend who delivered her DD at 27 weeks weighing just 750grams. She was in the NICU for 2 months, but she's now a happy, healthy and hyperactive 2 year old! So there is definitely hope Flowers

mynameisntLinda · 17/03/2017 20:32

@natienka ask dh if he thinks he would feel excluded. Have you thought about reading up or doing a course on hypnobirthing? That tends to be really focused on your birth partner being really involved and being your advisory when needed. I can ask in my old mum'snet group if anyone used one or knows of one coz quite a few live in and around London. I probably wouldn't hire a dollar but that's because £1500 would be too much money for us but I did spend £300 on my first private hypnobirthing course. Only costing £50 this time coz the midwifesame have now trained in it.

natienka · 17/03/2017 20:40

Hi not Linda ;) we did hypnobirthing in the first pregnancy; and today I wrote to someone else local, and told them about my situation and they offered the course at an extremely affordable price as way of acknowledging and helping our current pregnancy... made me cry for half an hour! DH not particularly a fan of hypno as he says it doesn't work for him (and yes he realises it's not about him ;) ) but he's happy to support me however I need.

Normally he's a very down to earth and rational person, but very caring, and he totally delivered back then when we both dealt with a tragedy; not only he had to deal with it himself, but he had to care for me because I also had a hemorrhage and felt hazy and depressed, he washed me, changed my sheets, did everything basically for days...

So I have no worries he would be supportive now that our pregnancy is fine... but in a way, I'm hoping the doula could actually relieve some of the pressure off him, that he could feel a bit more... pampered, as well? I want to acknowledge how amazing he was and is through that shared birth as well. Flowers Maybe I need to find some videos which show how the daddy - doula relationship works. Or ask the doula that I'm interested in hiring. And of course I'll talk to him, he's just away at the moment.
