I have gestational diabetes and they recommend harvesting in order to help stabilise the baby's sugars if needs be.

Pregnancies without gestational diabetes don't need to do it

Cuppaqueen · 23/03/2017 15:49

Wow, congrats on all the new arrivals!! They just couldn't wait till April Grin

I'm jealous, so ready to meet my baby already. Had another check-up last week and he's still transverse so I'm booked in for a section at 38+6, just over two weeks to go all being well!

MyGreenSofa · 23/03/2017 17:19

I would recommend that all ladies try to harvest some colostrum before their baby is born. It's good to be able to get some practice of the technique and is great to be able to do if you struggle with bf'ing or are separated from your baby. C sections can also effect milk production & you'll be in a fair amount of discomfort under one too.

I was all ready to try and start harvesting from 37 weeks (which is recommended as it can put you in labour) due to all these issues with DD and DS went and arrived at 36+2! So I've had to be continuously hand expressing for him as we are separated and it would have been nice to have had a head start on this!

At the infant feeding workshop my hospital ran, they recommended everyone have a go at harvesting some colustrum. As MyGreenSofa says, you might find you need it. It might simply be that baby is struggling to latch and the syringe can help to fill their stomach, calm them down and then you can keep trying with a calm baby rather than a distressed hungry baby.
Saying that - I haven't managed to harvest any yet!

Cuppa - sorry to hear your baby is still traverse. What are the chances they will turn?

It's my last day at work today. It's felt like an age getting to this point!

marmitecheesetoast · 24/03/2017 10:38

My last day at work today too KittyKat! Eek! All feels a bit real now!!

bangbangprettypretty · 24/03/2017 11:08

Thanks ladies - so do I get syringes from the pharmacy and have a crack at extracting onto a spoon?

I'm 37+4 and only getting a drop or two out.

purpleviolet1 · 24/03/2017 12:51

Congrats green sofa!! Hope your boy is recovering well and is able to be with you soon.

Baby and I are ok, he feeds , gets winded and is in discomfort constantly from 10pm - 2am. The feeds just run into each other. Seems to be his fussy time. So think I need to get a bit smarter about sleeping more during the day as it's just too exhausting....

Do we have a follow on thread?

peanut2017 · 24/03/2017 15:41

Hi finished work!!! Yippee! Finished a week earlier & I'm delighted!

Getting the carpets cleaned as if the baby will notice ha ha!

Having lunch with them next Thursday as only told them on Wednesday I was finishing today.

Going to a breastfeeding group on Monday to get advice from the mums! Recommended that in the ante natal class.

The hospital gave me the tubes to put the colostrum in - I went to them as I'm over 35 and apparently as an older mum it can be more difficult!

SharkBastard · 24/03/2017 15:47

You could ask your midwife bang. I've been given 5 syringes, going to fill them all, and then may ask for more depending.

Went for my 36 week scan today, all OK other than his stomach has stopped growing as fast as it was...however, that is because they told me to alter my diet and gave me insulin so was bound to happen! He's still 90th centile! Have another scan in 2 weeks and get a sweep and stretch, and if all is well, I will be allowed to go to term before induction!

Well stoked with that as with DD I was in at 37 weeks being induced which failed and led to c section. Would love a VBAC this time!

Hope you ladies who finished work enjoy it, it is lovely!

abeandhalo · 24/03/2017 20:19

As a first-timer I obviously don't know what I'm looking for but I've been feeling very twingy this afternoon / evening & lots of pressure down low - husband must be starting to get twitchy too as he's just finally the car seat! Grin

Thanks dd for waking me up at 5:45 this morning. She usually wakes about half 7, what's gone happened! I've sat her im front of the ipad with some nursery rhymes on netflix Blush

I'm nearly 37 weeks and getting lots of cramping, sharp pains, braxton hicks. Much more than last time. MW said that as its my second she'll be happy to do a sweep after 37 weeks and it should be effective. At last someone who takes my refusal to go overdue seriously!

I have never heard of being advised to express colustrum early unless there is a medical need. Is it easy to do, I imagine it would take a lot of work?

shark fingers crossed it goes well for you!

SharkBastard · 25/03/2017 07:54

It's really easy to harvest colostrum, just about technique. There is plenty of info online, helps to relax and also if your partner can give you a shoulder rub or something as oxytocin enables it to flow better.

Hope all have a good day! Need some more babies to come along

peanut2017 · 25/03/2017 08:10

There is a video on Stanford universities website that they told me to look at before I met them which shows you the technique

Told me to massage after shower for the first 3 days and then on day 4 to start. Use a bit of cream on your hands

MyGreenSofa · 25/03/2017 08:38

There is a good video on the UNICEF website too. It takes practice and can be slow going so I think really good to do when there isn't the pressure of having a newborn that needs it right away!

Marmite, Peanut - it hasn't sunk in for me. It just feels like the weekend and I'll be heading to work as normal. I'm looking forward to a leisurely morning tomorrow. I think it will sink in then.

Thanks for the follow on thread Purple. I wonder who will be next?

I've got a feeling that I'm going to go overdue. I'm trying not to fixate too much on my due date.

bangbangprettypretty · 26/03/2017 21:25

I've had brown discharge when I wipe - might that be the start of The Show?

Am 38 weeks today. I'm at the hospital tomorrow morning anyway but I'm unsure how soon things might happen! Could do with hanging on as my DH is away until Tuesday!

HLBug · 26/03/2017 22:23

Sounds like the beginnings of a show to me! Doesn't necessarily mean things are imminent- just that your body is getting ready. Exciting!

bangbangprettypretty · 26/03/2017 22:46

Eek! I haven't mentioned to DH so I'll just sit tight and see what's happening in the morning... Confused

TopKittyKat · 27/03/2017 09:18

Oh good luck bangbang. Is this #1 for you?

MygirlKeith · 27/03/2017 09:19

Good luck bangbang!
I'm third on the list today so they said I should be taken late morning/lunchtime barring emergencies etc. Going to be a long morning!

HLBug · 27/03/2017 10:38

Are you in for your section today Mygirl?! Wow! Best of luck! Hopefully you get taken up soon and aren't waiting around for ages. Keep us updated!!

I had clinic this morning and section date should be Tues 18th April (39+3) but I still reckon it'll be later that week due to Easter weekend backlog.

Theknittinggorilla · 27/03/2017 14:31

Wow dropped off the thread and babies have been arriving in my absence!

Congrats chat, purple and green! And good luck today keith!

I'm 36+2 today. Went for my 36 week consultant appt last week and was expecting a section date (as my midwife told me I would get one) but no, they will phone me two weeks before, grrrr. Is that standard? With dc2 they booked my section at my sixteen week appt! Because of Easter looks like it will be later in the week when I am 39+5. Very irrational but had come to terms with the need for another section with the upsides that I would have a date to plan childcare and would only need to get to 39 weeks ish, so a bit fed up.

Anyway hope everyone is ok, babies will be coming thick and fast now.....

bangbangprettypretty · 27/03/2017 14:35

Good luck MyGirl!

Gorilla 🦍 that is a bit disappointing! I am hoping things are starting for me, I've got brown discharge but no pain.

The midwife today said they may not need to induce me on my due date if my urinary protein lowers. I feel very conflicted! Confused

purpleviolet1 · 27/03/2017 15:28

Good luck mygirl!!!
