Thanks AngeG, can you mix and match bottles/top brands i.e. Avent bottles with another brands´ nipples?

God, just as you think you´ve sorted something out in your head something else comes up that you didn´t even realise you had to think about!

AngeG · 23/01/2007 17:31

I know what you mean Maveta. I generally stuck with the same make of nipples and bottles. Although I should think you can mix and match. Only thing I'd say is that other makes of teat might leak. For example some bottles have a cap that sits in the top of the bottles so that when you shake the milk up it doesn't go everywhere, whereas others don't need these, for example Avent bottles don't have the cap and don't leak when you shake them up, but if you were to use another brands wide neck teats on an Avent bottle they might.

Sorry that's a bit garbled. I'm sure someone else will explain it better than me.

muminabigtumi · 23/01/2007 17:34

MAveta - your poor cat!!! What a shame - so glad he has found you to look after him. Blimey you've got your shopping into gear haven't you!
I did the last of mine yesterday, bought some nursing bras and a nursing top, Lansinoh cream and breast pads and a Taggies Comfort Banket for the baby (couldn't resist...everytime I have seen them I have thought ..I will get one of those!!!)
Pram is sorted - thanks so much to........(scrolls back through thread for name...)Runny - I found the car seat clips now......your a STAR! I also found my raincover in my Mums shed ....so I am sorted ont hat front and I am very chuffed!

James has fallen asleep - v bad timing....can't be bothered to wake him as he will be like the anti-christ....and won't eat his tea or anything.....sigh but then he's not likley to go to bed at 7pm.....

I'm going to have a nice long soak in the bath tonight as my darling football obbsessed husband has just rung (he's cute he always rings me up to see how I am) and I enquired as to whether there was football on tonight...of course there is so I am going to have a candlelit bath and chocolate!

Love all the talk of names...CD I really like both Arthur and Phoebe...I am set on Robyn Reucroft for a girl but still undecided re boys...Have horrid feeling DH is going to persuage me to have Robert because he won't accept any of my nice Scottishy boys names....It would be Callumn if I get my way but he point blank refuses......

Bramshott - bugger re the cake!
And at the silly old codgers who nearly ran you over flumpootle! I swear some old people are not fit to drive....you must have got such a fright!!!!

Best go and wake James....wish me luck - catch you later
x

eca · 23/01/2007 17:42

hi all

GMM - sorry you're feeling low. Is understandable, so don't be too hard on yourself.
Also have to say am loving Charlie Chambers! That's so cute! We're thinking Charlie for a middle name.

Have forgotton everything else, except that I now need mint choc aero...

Had first session of doing detached work with young people in town today. I seriously must be mad. It wasn't even a full session (3hrs20mins) and I was FREEZING and HUNGRY and TIRED and needing the loo!! How am I going to walk round for 3hrs+ chatting to young people?? Oh help. What have i done. It's winter! Why didn't I engage brain when I was offered this job??? The poor guy I'm working with clearly thinks i'm mad and is getting far too much info about pregnancy for his liking! Baby was kicking like mad and wriggling into all sorts of uncomfortable positions. Then when I finally found a loo I realised my tummy was freezing. I'd tried to put lots of layers on to keep warm (inc 2pairs of trousers!) but it clearly wasn't doing the trick.

Sorry to rant. I just don't know how this is going to work out!!

flumppootle · 23/01/2007 17:50

Gmm- Charlie Chambers is SO cute
AngeG - at spd. Dont suffer from it but it sounds awful. Bad enough trying to sleep as it is without that aswell.
Miabt - good luck at waking james ! Dont envy you on that one
Cant remember any of the other names but some really nice ones have been mentioned. We are none the wiser here on that one

Maveta, you sound so organised that I'm now scared! Haven't really thought about any of that yet. Or got out and cleaned cot/pram etc.
The bottle/teat thing: it is always advisible to go with the same make. The fit of the ring/cap is always better but the other reason is is that there is sometimes a minute airhole is the neck of the teat. This is hard to see and is dependant on the make of the bottle. I have MAM bottles and have to pierce all teats that are not MAM because it affects the air flow and milk flow. I guess that some teats can fit other bottles but I would have no idea which ones.
Did that make any sense?????

Apologies for my very poor spelling today, lack of sleep is showing

A question for you all. I had a tommee tippee steam sterilser for ds and will use it again. I cant remember how much water you are meant to add per cycle Does anyone else have one and could they let me know?????? Please?

flumppootle · 23/01/2007 17:57

Sorry forgot to say that not having the balance of airflow/milkflow correct with bottles can cause colic. None of us want to be dealing with that after april

AngeG · 23/01/2007 18:05

Thanks Flumppootle, knew someone would have better ideas for me.

I bought the closer to nature bottles the other day and on their information leaflet it said their bottles have a dotted line on them at 80ml because that's how much water should be used in the steam steriliser. HTH.

AngeG · 23/01/2007 18:10

Sorry that didn't make sense I meant. I knew someone would have better ideas than me not for me.

flumppootle · 23/01/2007 18:12

THANKYOU AngeG will go and write that on a sticker and stick it on the steriliser. I looked everywhere for instructions, even online but couldn't find it anywhere.
It has been really bugging me. Thanks for putting me out of my misery

I cant stop laughing. Boy next door is practising his trumpet. Dd2 says to dd1 "what's a Tuba?" and dd1 replies "I think that it is a big brass bum"
Priceless love listening to there conversations They never fail to cheer me up.

maveta · 23/01/2007 18:20

AngeG - did mean to send you some sympathy re. SPD earlier and indeed to everyone suffering from it, it sounds horrible.

MIABT - good luck with James and have a lovely bath tonight, that was my plan for this afternoon but mumsnet has kept me occupied for far too long again!!

Thanks girls for the help re. bottles, Avent seems to be a good make so I´ll see how I go with them and take it from there. That´s all ages away anyway.

I´ve only had this recent organisational burst as our finances aren´t going so well, unexpected costs just KEEP coming up every month and I am so worried we will pick away at the little money we have put aside for the baby that I want to spend it all now while we still have it!! eek. It does feel a little early to have started gathering but really truly it may be now or never!

flumppootle · 23/01/2007 18:24

Not too early at all Maveta! I didn't mean that you were being too orgainsed. Hope that I didn't offend you, really didn't mean too
I guess that I just feel guilty because I haven't really thought about any of that and concentrated more on the house move. Poor bean hasn't had a look in

liath · 23/01/2007 18:28

Pesha - was your scan today? Hope it went well if it was.

maveta · 23/01/2007 18:31

Not offended at all flumppootle! Really truly, I´m just explaining myself as it is a bit super organised of me.. feel a bit like the mumsnet swot now

maveta · 23/01/2007 18:33

Weeonion, I wanted to ask if you have decided on what nappies to buy yet? Or are you going to try making them? Or was that someone else??!

Katy44 · 23/01/2007 18:36

Hi everyone,

Just a fleeting visit as off to get pizza
GMM - sorry to hear you're feeling down hugs
Sorry, have only skimmed through other posts but definitely want to come back and read the bottle / teat discussions - I didn't realise it was so complicated!

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 23/01/2007 18:54

Maveta, one of my cats tries to dig over his food - it drives me bonkers. I think he is trying to tell me he thinks it is shit! I would tend to agree!

Loving all the names. Ruby is lovely - funny I was thinking about that name today being Tuesday (Ruby Tuesday) Also isn't Ruby Murray slang for curry - which is what I ate the night I conceived (I think!)

MIABT, how did you get on waking James. I hate it when they drop off at that time. If ever I was coming back from somewhere in the car at that time, I would put the radio on really loudly, and keep asking Becky questions! pmsl at your encounter with the turd! I hate it when people don't clear up after their dogs.

muminabigtumi · 23/01/2007 19:06

OMG - that was the worst bedtime EVER....
He is so fullof a cold and his nose is red raw...so it was never going to be easy - he was hysterical from the moment I woke him....and just inconsolable.
He didn't have any tea - but had two cups of milk - he even asked me to give it to him like a baby (bless him it was cute took me back....) All he wanted to do was lie on the settee and cuddle me....which we did but the best place for him is bed - he just wanted to sleep. So the hysterical wash and into PJ's was grrrrrrrreat - best contraceptive going a night like that....
Finally got him into bed and he happily listened to Charlie and Lola story (he loves them and I think they are fab)- then he heard his Daddy come home so cranked up the waterworks again for effect....lol
He had finally gone down...somehow don't think it will be him for the night - gonna grab my tea and my bath...bless Phil he came home with a bar of Galaxy and a copy of heat !!!!
He said he felt sorry for me having to do an "anti-christ bedtime routine!" lol
x

Re bottles and teats - I would stick with the teat for your brand of bottle. I've got Avent again - really like them although was tempted by those sterilser bottles in Mothercare - my friend swears by them - has anyone else tried them? Basically you don't need a steriliser you just put water int he bottle - fit it together and microwave it....
x

hotlipsmummy · 23/01/2007 19:36

Just quickly as we have neighbours coming over for a take away curry tonight - on the bootle/teat conversation I would recommend waiting before buying too much esp if you are planning on bf. Whilst Avent have great marketing etc their teats are very unlike the real thing, iyswim, and those wanting to mix feed might be better getting a teat that is more realistic. I was never very successful at getting DS to take a bottle but nct mates managed by using NUK teats - much softer and better shaped than Avent. I think they fit into Avent bottles as well.

Right gotta dash - DH wants the pc!!

CaptainDippy · 23/01/2007 20:04

MIABT - LOL @ "Anti- Christ Bedtime Routine" - we regularly have one of those here. Very frightening. Think I need counselling. Or chocolate. Or both.

Ange - Loving Robert (Robbie - cute!!) (my dad's name) Not so keen on Zack - Isabelle / Isobel etc etc Clair is sweet too. Fredric is a nice middle name!

Flump - LOL @ Big Bass Bum! Tonight we asked DD1 what she want for her Birthday next month -

"Birthday Presents"

"Yes, darling, but what Birthday presents?"

"Erm. Lego."

"OK. Anything else?"

"A man."

"Erm. OK. What sort of man, honey?"

"A man."

All righty then!!

Gotta go - dinner and Holby City awaits ....

Emmymummy · 23/01/2007 20:26

LOL CD about your dd asking for a man for her birthday. Can I have one of those for mine too? (Only for the night, mind and don't tell dh).

Well checked the train ticket situation and Bramshott is correct - you can upgrade to 1st class only of there are no other seats available. Never mind huh, but it won't matter as we'll have a giggle on the way to S'ton. We can always hijack the refreshment trolley to keep us amused....

On the subject of having-a-baby gifts - got a very pretty diamond ring when I had Em - only a little one mind, but beautiful. Shame I can't get the thing on my finger at the moment - I can only wear my wedding band and another band on my other hand at the moment as my fingers have puffed up. Don't know if dh will get me anything this time - I don't really need another ring (not that I've got loads, am just happy with the ones I have), don't really wear earrings, and I tend to wear more beady/colourful necklaces, so wouldn't wear anything posh. Of course I may not get anything .

Bump has really grown suddenly - can no longer do up the zip on a pair of Blooming Marvellous trousers, and my nice posh Formes skirt is do-upable, but a bit constricting. Oh dear. Another 3 months of growth, I'm gonna end up wearing a sack at this rate.

weeonion · 23/01/2007 20:27

AngeG · 23/01/2007 20:33

MIABT - Sorry about your nightmare bedtime. I've just had a similar one with Jake. Still Allen is up there with him now so I can relax a bit.

My friend also uses and loves the Mothercare sterilser bottles. After my bad experience with Avent bottles last time I won't be using them again and the mothercare bottles and teats looked very similar to them Shame because I love the idea of no steriliser hanging around all the time.

By the way did anyone read the thread about not needing to use sterilsers that was on here the other day? link here Interesting reading.

Off to watch Holby City now xx

Hotlipsmummy agree with you re bottles. As I said I had a bad experience with the Avent ones and used the NUK ones which were excellent although at the time they only did narrow neck ones, but they have now started doing wide neck ones. As I said earlier I have a bought a couple of the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature ones as they look very similar to the position used for BF and I would like to combine the two at some point.

CD - How old is your DD? Must have her well educated wanting a man already
Hope you're enjoying Holby City I have just paused it while I'm on here. I know what you mean about Zack, but I think Jake and Zack sound better than Jake and Robert. Wait and see I think, i'll probably change my mind.

AngeG · 23/01/2007 20:36

Watching Holby City was meant to be at the end not right in the middle don't know how that happened.

maveta · 23/01/2007 20:45

Yeah I just saw that link about sterilising a wee while ago. At first I was kind of aargh as my mum JUST bought me the steriliser but then on more reading it seems many people either use the microwave or dishwasher instead and we have neither. The hot water/ air dry probably is as good but as we have cats and in summer here there can be ants and other bugs, I reckon I´ll go with the steriliser. It seems like a good one, just chuck it all in and switch on so shouldn´t be too much of a pain. right? right??

Will need to make a note re. the NUK nipples just in case it becomes an issue. Not going to buy things like bottles and teats right now anyway, maybe nearer the time will buy one or two but I know it´s the kind of thing we can run out an buy as and when. Just seeing the steriliser kind of got me thinking.

WO - thanks for the heads up re. little lambs, will have a look anyway to see if they can deliver anything to spain.

Emmymummy · 23/01/2007 20:47

Re. Avent bottles - I mixed fed Emily for about 3 months using Avent bottles with no problems whatsoever. She had no problem going from boob to bottle and vice versa, so will probably go for this again. It is really nice to have the option of letting someone else feed the baby to be honest, and it meant dh could give her the last feed of the night while I got some much needed zzzzzzzzs.

I have to say, although I successfully bf'ed last time (Em didn't drop any weight after she was born), and she obviously thrived on it, I hated every minute . It's funny as I'm not a bit worried about giving birth, but the thought of b'fing again fills me with dread. I will give it another go, but the sore boobs (esp. during the week of totally giving up b.fing) were more painful than a post-birth fanjo!
