Miaou · 01/01/2007 21:32

oooh they're lovely aren't they? The US has so much nicer clothes than we have here - we are so crap with maternity clothes in the UK

snowytyphoonsmum · 02/01/2007 09:40

Figured that out later. Stupid Americans.

Looks like it is £30 for a pair of trousers from Mothercare then. Will just have to wash more often. Or get the stuff off ebay. had a look yesterday but there wasn't much maternity stuff there. Mainly childrens clothes.

newby29 · 02/01/2007 10:16

Hi all - just a quick question for people. When, on average, do people start maternity leave? I have looked at my employers terms and conditions and I think it says you can start is any time from week 29, but wondered how much time people normally left between stopping work and due date? Any advice??

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 11:50

Hi all, on the subjet of maternity clothes next have some nice stuff in .. still fashionable aswell combats and such...

Just had my scan.. dates are correct. Little heart was beating away babs was bouncing all over. they did it internally here ...as they do all 12week and earlier scans!!!!.. really bnot sure why they do the 12week one this way...

catstar · 02/01/2007 12:14

Twoplusone - so glad all was well in your scan. I have mine at 2pm this afternoon and am really nervous!

Firststar - thanks for your message - felt really well over the weekend and managed to stay up until 1.30am on NYE!!

Cazzybabs - so sorry to read your news. I hope the New Year brings you everything you wish for. Don't give up.

A Happy New Year to everyone, and good luck with scans etc.

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 12:21

Goodluck catstar with your scan.xx

Cyee · 02/01/2007 12:24

Hi everyone - and a happy new year!

Newby - I work in HR and people vary in terms of when they start their mat leave. Most try and go as close to their due date as poss - so maybe leave 2 weeks before they're due. It will generally depend on how they're feeling, any complications, and how much holiday they have to tack on to their mat leave.

The only statutory constraints are that you have to go off about a week before your due date. Hope this helps.

In terms of maternity clothes, I went shopping last week and the high street shops are full of maternity-friendly empire line tops. So I think I'll be able to make do with those and a couple of pairs of mat trousers. Top Shop has lovely t-shirts/scoop neck, loose and long.

Take care all and hope your scans all go well.

3flightsofsleighbellsring · 02/01/2007 13:02

Hi everyone, hope you had a lovely Christmas break! We got back home on hogmanay to find our heating not working - happy new year! Still can't manage to get a plumber out as we've a weird boiler, so DS had a bath in the washing up bowl last night and loved it! Kitchen was soaked but it was v funny Same again tonight by the looks of it - going to the gym for a shower later! It's like living in the 50s here.

Congrats on the scan twoplusone and good luck to catstar for this afternoon and everyone else with them coming up!

We also had some good news about our test results - they're all good and new baby isn't a carrier! Woohoo! Also found out the sex, very exciting! Can't tell you yet as I haven't managed to get hold of DH yet. It's all starting to feel real altho I'm still in my jeans and that's me 14+ now, so hoping baby's still OK in there. Not sure when I'll believe this is going to happen... I've got my booking in apt tomorrow, does anyone know if the mw will listen for a heartbeat?

Newby last time I took my mat leave at 36 weeks but had 2 wks hol to add on. I found my brain wasn't really working and going to client meetings on 6am trains wasn't really working for me [huge understatement emoticon]. And then being next to useless when I did turn up wasn't too impressive either I guess it depends what you do too and how your pg is going - if you have to stand up all day I can only imagine it's a nightmare. I would have been off like a shot on the stroke of 29 wks!

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 13:09

3flightsofsleighbellsring- great news on the results...
The mw should listne for a heartbeat, but remember you still maynot be able to hear it yet.. I do now some areas the mw wont try to find uit until 16weeks.. so it depends on mw.... as some mothers panick if they cant get a hb early on...

Good luck with your booking in.

I am knackered today just ewant to sleep... nochance ds is in over drive..

Got to go to the docs tommorrow for a 12week check so he can check my heart ect.. (never heard of this before)... new one on me but it something done as standard here...

Newby

You may also find that your employer has rules such as if you have any pregnancy-related illness within 4 weeks of due date, you must start your maternity leave then, even if you were planning to start it later.

With my DD, I finished around 3.5 weeks before EDD and I was feeling quite tired then and ready for it. But as she was late, it did drag a bit at the end.

This time round I still plan to finish around 3-4 weeks before EDD.

I guess it also depends how long you are having off, as time before baby means less time with baby before going back. I used up some annual leave to get a bit more time off with my DD and also did shorter hours on return (again using up leave) so that work was not too much of a shock at first!

newby29 · 02/01/2007 13:32

Congrats on your scans you two. How really wonderful.

And thanks for the advise on maternity leave (this is my first!). I am a civil servant so in general conditions are generous and I am sat at my desk all day so that helps! Good advice, though, thanks everyone.
Is the norm to have your normal annual leave entitlement as well or is that pro-rata-ed? I realise it might vary by employer - just wondered if there is any statutory requirement (cyee?) about that?

snowytyphoonsmum · 02/01/2007 14:05

I'll be taking mat leave as late as possible. Probably at 38/39 weeks but adding a week or two holiday in front so leaving at about 37/38 weeks.
The idea of six months + off with a small crying baby scares me stupid. I'd prefer to take the time off when the baby is six months old. I don't do LITTLE BABIES.

Myfairone · 02/01/2007 14:07

Twoplusone - I am so glad that the scan went well.
3flightsofsleighbellsring - excellent news!
Catstar - Good luck - be sure to let us know!

I cannot wait for my scan (18th Jan), just feel I will be so relieved once I can see it!

On the subject of maternity clothes and putting on weight, I was staggered this morning that my work suits no longer fit me! I shopped in the next sale and picked up some great bits but nothing suitable for work....so right now I am sitting with my trousers undone with my shirt hanging out! OMG - I am only 10+2!!!!!! I am very slight build so wonder if that is the reason I am showing so early! Or could it be that I've eaten so much to try and keep the constant feeling of nausea at bay!

Hope everyone is feeling good today!

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 14:09

Myfairone- maybe you might be myfairtwo!!!....

I do feel releived now that I have had the scan it makes it seem so much more real..

I have put a piccie of the scan in the member profiles..

Myfairone · 02/01/2007 14:15

Twoplusone - your not the first person to say that to me either! I neeeeeed my scan!!!! arhgghhghghghgh....

I am being stupid here, but how can I view your scan picture?

So relieved for you and I hope that it helps put your DH mind at rest too!

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 14:26

Myfairone · 02/01/2007 14:40

Twoplusone - that is amazing! OH my, you can see everything! How did you feel when you saw it? Were you emotional? I'm not sure if I will just burst into tears....

And what a little cutie DS! Bless him! That is one of those cute pictures that will most definitely make an appearance when he brings his first girlfriend home!

Thanks for sharing.

pulapula · 02/01/2007 14:51

Newby- I'm a civil servant too, so probably pretty similar rules around maternity pay.

You get your A/L whilst on paid maternity leave, which will be 9 months from this April (for my department its 6 months full pay + 3 months statutory maternity pay).

One thing to consider is bank holidays - if they occur during mat leave then you lose them, but if you plan to take annual leave either side of your mat leave and this includes bank hols, you will get paid for them. So it's worth planning your mat leave carefully. I have spent a lot of time thinking about this, and reckon I should start mat leave no later than 20 June to ensure I get xmas bank hols if I have 6 months off, or easter bank hols if I have 9 months off! Can you tell I'm a statistican?!

twoplusone · 02/01/2007 14:54

didnt get emotional, in the background all I could here was "Thomas tory tory cole choo choo..." over and over again as ds wanted dd to reade him his Thomas annual... then "No put your shoes back on, dont take your socks of" was what dd was saying as ds was trying to strip of in his pushchair..

he is being a rascall since we got hime, trying to put dvds and videos in the recorder... I keep unplugging it but he keeps plugging it back in.... all I want to do is go to sleeeepppppp.......
