typhoonsmum, thinking of you at this very sad time, with the funeral situation i think you are spot on with what you have told dd, this is how i explained things to my ds when he was four, thats when dh passed away, i took him with me to the funeral although alot of people didnt agree with a four year old being at a funeral, i wouldnt have had it any other way. Now ds is 13 we still sit and chat about dh passing away and he remembers everything, the morning he passed away in our house to the day of the funeral and how i explained everything to him (i think this is most important)I think it depends on the individual, our 4 year old was very mature (if that makes sense)now hes 13 going on 30!!!i wouldnt have changed a thing, i explained everything to him as you have done with dd and he would sign up to his daddy's star every night twinkle twinkle (god now the tears are streaming down my face) I hope you and the family are well.

catstar · 31/01/2007 18:08

Tears now streaming down my face - very moving words today. Makes you appreciate everything even more.

lynnec · 31/01/2007 18:56

Sorry, that should have been sing not sign

weddingcake · 31/01/2007 19:06

Really struggling with evening sickness so haven't been on for a while but just wanted to say hi and catch up on everything I've missed.

So sorry to hear your news typhoon's mum and hope you're doing ok. Sometimes it's even harder to be the one trying to support everyone than the one whose loss is the most raw if that makes sense so I hope there's someone there for you to lean on too.

Personally I think you have to trust your instincts as to whether funerals are right for children and your 4 year old does sound very grown up. My father died when my sister's 4 children were aged between 4 and 10. They all came to the funeral and took it all in their stride and 12 years later they remember the day vividly and are all pleased they had that chance to say goodbye. It is such a difficult decision though.

I joined the NCT this week and have been invited to a new members evening. It says it's for partners too but maybe someone who's done this before can tell me if many partners do actually attend these social events and not just the classes. I'm stupidly nervous about either taking him and being the only one who does and looking a bit pathetic or leaving him behind and feeling really silly if everyone else is coupled up...please help!

Hope everyone's doing ok and thinking of those who are having a tough time.

Take Care xx

typhoonsmum · 31/01/2007 20:24

Discussed it with DP in front of MIL. MIL says she doesn't think DD will be bothered. DP is still adament. I told him that if she got upset I'd take her outside for a bit. DP says it isn't for another week so he'll think about it.
How is everyone else. Sorry about the scare Boobunny but glad everything is ok now. I know I'm going back a few conversations but on the Knickers debate.
I'm very much a thong woman.(but Primark do these cute little pants that look like little boys undies. Including decorative buttons. They are SOOO comfy) When Pg with DD I just carried on as normal wearing the knickers below the bump.

abgirl · 31/01/2007 20:27

Boobunny (Saf) am glad to hear that everything's OK - take things easy!

Sorry weddingcake never got round to joining NCT last time as DS arrived too suddenly so can't be much help!

Had an interesting day today. Have recently become a parent representative on the local neonatal network board so spent some time visiting some of the local SCBU and NICU units. The idea is that we will represent the views of babies and parents when strategic decisions are made about neonatal care in the Surrey/Sussex area. Totally removed from what I do normally and something I'm really interested in - luckily my work have a voluntary public service scheme so I get paid time off to do it as well.

After all my time off in the last two weeks my work have suddenly got very supportive of flexible work (I guess they think some work is better than no work at all!), and from now on I'll be working from home on Thursday mornings and having Thursday afternoons off as flexible leave - should break up the week well, and they've said to see how things go and I may be able to take more flexible leave if I need it - only have 12 and 1/2 weeks left anyway and feeling a lot more positive about it now .

Hope you are all well....

Jennster · 31/01/2007 20:42

Sorry to hear your news Typhoonsmum. Hope your dd is feeling better too.

WRT maternity exemption certificates they only entitle you to free NHS prescriptions, and free dental treatment. Was told when I asked that being pregnant doesn't affect your eyesight. SORRY If you have a low income (but not on income support, working persons tax credit with a prescription exemption) then you can apply for an HC2 certificate on an HC1 application form.

Hope this helps

Jennster · 31/01/2007 20:46

That's free NHS dental treatment too.

twoplusone · 01/02/2007 07:20

Sorry you had a scare boobunny, glad everything is ok.

Typhoonsmum- Hope your DH comes round to yours and mILS way if thinking.

Weddingcake hope the morning sickness wears off soon.

My hormones are playing havoc again, I just keep crying, ,mostly on an evening when the children hacve gone to bed, well and truly ready for DH to come home.... only 1 WEEK TO GO [GRIN]
I have forgotton what others have wrote need to go back and check.....

Myfairone · 01/02/2007 10:06

Morning all,
Typhoonsmum I am so sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine how hard this must be for all of you. With regards to your DD I think everything you have said has been just perfect. You know her and if you feel that you would like her to go and she is okay with it then do what feels right.

Boobunny, I am so glad that everything is okay. That must have been so scary for you.

Okay well my week is shaping up to be something like Twoplusone's....feel so emotional. Totally overreacted with DH last night and spent the entire evening working myself into a frenzy. Red eyed and sobbing (with the little wobbly chin thing going on) I tried to sleep! No chance!

So today my MS is back with a vengence (sp) and I look like crap! Oh but my butt feels great! I finally caved and bought some 'this season boy shorts' (thanks Jennster and feel sooooo comfy today! Kind of hard to get used to considering I have spent the past 20 years in strings!

I hope that everyone feels okay today...take care, big hugs to anyone who feels they need one!

catstar · 01/02/2007 10:12

A another question Ladies. Have woken up this morning with a red, spotty, itchy rash over my bump, thighs and boobs. Do you think I should be concerned about this and get it looked at, or is it likely just to be an allergic reaction to something? Am paranoid about everything, but don't want to waste the doctor's time!

lynnec · 01/02/2007 10:16

catstar, i read about this during the week it is normal to get this, im not sure how far on you are but it did say i wasnt to worry about it as it happens to some woman around 15+ weeks, something to do with hormones.

Myfairone · 01/02/2007 10:28

Catstar - I agree with LynneC. I had a rash covering my legs and chest and it was really itchy too. I was told not to worry about it. I got some Aloe Vera gel from Holland & Barrett and it seemed to clear up okay.

If you are worried go to the doctor though. Dont worry about being a pain!

catstar · 01/02/2007 12:01

Blo**dy hormones !!! Thanks Ladies - will slap on the Aloe Vera (I swear by the gel anyway) and see how it goes.

I am knackered walked for about 1and a 1/2 hrs!! in total, I am normally so lazy, I could just lie on the sofa now and doze of for a bit.. Infact I might just do that get dd watch ds if she will
Hopefully my friend is comng tommorow for the night so it will be nice to have a bit of company.. if she doenst not long to go anyway......... yeah yeah yeah..

twoplusone · 01/02/2007 15:14

justaboutmanaging- just seen on another thread your ds was a 36weeker with IUGR.... My DD was a 36weeker also with IUGR (and a few other probs she was born by ec-section as wasnt allowed to labour with her) but my second pregnancy went by with out a problem.. I was moitered throughout though. scans evey 4 weeks after 20weeks, just to check placenta and growth..
This time not having the extra scans.. but will do if I start measuring small for dates again..

catstar · 01/02/2007 15:24

Welcome Justaboutmanaging!! Could I just ask what IUGR stands for - doesn't sounds very nice whatever it is!

Miaou · 01/02/2007 15:35

Catstar, IUGR stands for Itra-Uterine Growth Restriction, when the baby doesn't grow at the normal or expected rate in the womb.

I was looking up about the itching thing, and found this on the babycentre site: "The itching associated with OC usually begins during the last ten weeks of pregnancy, although it can start much earlier. Women describe it as constant and sometimes as intolerable." So probably too early for OC. Some more information about OC here .

Babycentre is a great site with loads of info and weekly updates on pregnancy progress - I use it a lot

Myfairone · 01/02/2007 16:12

Welcome Justaboutmanaging (I hope the nickname is not a true description of you!) I am due 29th July so I just about get into this one too!

Twoplusone - Well done on the long walk! I bet the dog is exhausted!
So how many days till DH is home!? Not many sleeps now! woohooooo!

Miaou - Thanks for the babycentre tip. I haven't visited that site before.

So how is everyone this afternoon?
I had a great shopping trip in my lunchbreak. I went to buy more 'boy shorts' from M&S (sorry, Im back to my underwear again!) and when the assistant rang them through they came up as £1 instead of £6! I quickly ran and got 3 more packets, so now have 20 new pairs (for £4!) I think I may wear them and throw them to save on the washing!

Have a great evening everyone.

x
