Hi just got my bfp! I'm early, 3 days before AF was due so not sure if I'm the only one with an August due date?

I'm due August 3rd Smile

Hi all. There's so much to catch up on! I called into the GPs today and picked up the maternity pack. Lots of forms to fill in and booklets to read. Can I ask a few questions?

Everyone seems to be having lots of early scans? How and why? I'm not offered a scan until 12-14 weeks according to the details in my pack.

What is the Harmony?

I've absolutely no symptoms at all other than 2 positive pg tests and no period. I don't feel pregnant at all. I'm not too worried if I'm honest! My LMP is 17th November so guessing that puts me at 4 weeks, though we DTD on Nov 28 so likely to be around 2 weeks. Guess that's why no symptoms!

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 16/12/2015 18:01

cola I think that a few people have just had some bleeding/cramps and were concerned so have had early scans at the EPU or they have a history of mcs and so may be offered an early scan. I'm six weeks and have had nothing and won't have an nhs scan until 12-14 like you say. I have however booked a private early scan next week when I will be 7 and a bit so I can hopefully tell my family with a little more confidence over Christmas.
If you have no problems then it's perfectly normal to not have a scan until 12 weeks.

Jw35 · 16/12/2015 18:02

Haha Cola you dtd on my birthday Grin I'm not having an early scan jut the 12 week one. I think some are paying although the epu might do one if you have any problems such as bleeding. Never heard of a harmony test? Guessing a test for abnormalities? Sounds expensive! Would you terminate if it showed a problem? I wouldn't so I won't bother. I didn't do the blood test for downs either, my friend did and scored high and was worried all pregnancy and baby didn't have downs! Only thing I'm interested in is whether my baby will live I will cope with the rest Smile

FourForYouGlenCoco · 16/12/2015 18:14

Yeah cola those of us that have had early scans is for things like history of MC, bad cramps, spotting/bleeding - anything out of the ordinary/worry inducing basically. No more now til the 12 weeks!
Harmony is a blood test that tests for various conditions in the baby, it's just emerging now and people like it as its non-invasive (so no risk to baby) and gives a much more definitive risk factor than NT screening. It is pretty expensive though!
Really need to book my booking in appt! I figure the later I have it, the less wait I'll have for my scan though, so not in too much of a hurry Smile

Salene · 16/12/2015 18:50

Harmony is a DNA profiling of the baby and will throw up chromosome disorders (Down’s syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau’s syndrome)

There is DNA of the baby in your blood and they can screen it. It's a fairly new test developed in USA

The NHS hope to one replace the NS scan and bloods they do with it as it's risk of False positive is about 0.04% , so people the don't go on to do invasive tests like CVS and risk losing baby's

But it's too expensive for NHS at the moment

You also find out the sex if you want as that's revealed as part of the DNA profile

It's pretty much a full proof testing.

I had a early Seanad had stabbing pains in my side so doctor thought pregnancy could be ectopic , when they scanned they found a cyst which is causing the pain

They will just keep a eye on it

Normally you won't get a scan till 12 weeks all being well.

Salene · 16/12/2015 18:52

JW35

Yes we would terminate if a disorder is detected. That's why we have the tests.

Salene · 16/12/2015 18:55

Edwards syndrome is quite a nasty thing, we not put a baby through it if they did survive birth . They would have a very painful short life. So for me I don't see the point in allowing that to happen.

Salene · 16/12/2015 18:56

Stupid phone keeps posting early and missing stuff out

This should say we wouldn't want to put a baby through it, that's if they even survived birth as many don't get that far.

Flybynight1 · 16/12/2015 19:10

lily that's a lovely blob!! Congratulations Grin

I cannot stand sweet treats at the moment, I am craving things in cheese sauce and then citrus fruits!! Today was a bad one, felt sick all day... Seems to subside when I eat but as soon as my stomach is empty I just feel gross. 1 more day of work this week and 2 next week then 2 weeks off-bring it on!! Xmas Smile

Jw35 · 16/12/2015 19:49

Salene that's fair enough and completely your choice. No judgement here Smile

Oh, can't wait till Friday, last day of term! My reception class are so excited about Father Christmas!

2weeks off, bliss.

Colabottle10 · 16/12/2015 19:53

Thanks everyone - feel better now. Where do you go for a private scan?

Another question. When you say you are 6 weeks, or 8 weeks, is that dated from your LPM or from when you ovulated?

Owl - I used to be a teacher - though secondary - and miss the holidays now I run my own business!

alduxbury · 16/12/2015 20:17

Hi all.
I don't feel pregnant at all today. Yes, I'm still
Bloated and whale like, exhausted and peeing lots however my boobs are now tender and not sore and I have had no nausea/warm flushes at all for the last few days. I am run down with a horrid cold so I'm not sure of its just masking it all. Midwife appt a week tomorrow so I'll mention how anxious i am about the fluctuating symptoms and occasional cramping. Hopefully I'm just being neurotic.

Congrats on the lovely blob! xx

Mrs1986 · 16/12/2015 20:23

Thanks ladies, that's helpful to know.
Tomorrow I've got my midwife appointment at 9am, then my scan is at 8:30pm.
I know I said I have no hope, but that's not quite true. I'd give anything to hear a heartbeat tomorrow!!
Wish me luck!! Xx

smellsofelderberries · 16/12/2015 20:52

alduxbury how far along are you? My symptoms disappeared at 5 weeks for about 10 days, came back last Tuesday when I was 6+2 and seem to fluctuate daily. That's normal apparently so I'm going with it.

I had some very light bleeding today, only when I wipe but it was fresh blood, not the light brown creamy discharge I have occasionally had. My GP, bless them, were able squeeze me in but couldn't really do much. It was accompanied by very, very mild cramps, which lasted for about 2 hours. Both seem to have stopped now but I called my sister sobbing and she was so sweet. She didn't even know yet so was very worried. Not sure what to think, but I have my midwife booking in tomorrow so will see what they say. Going for a scan early Friday anyway. It looked just like my implantation bleed I had, which was 29 days ago so I'm wondering (hoping!) it might just be a breakthrough bleed, which considering I used to have breakthrough bleeding even when I was on the pill, might not be too far outside the realms of possibility. I really hope that's all it was and we'll be lucky enough to hear a beautiful little heartbeat on Friday.

Salene · 16/12/2015 21:19

My morning sickness had kicked in today got it bad first time around but I could just lay about feeling sorry for myself

I've just spent last hour hugging toilet throwing up, for 5th time today . Not fun when you have a 15 month old child demanding your attention

Husband not home until 8th January either so I'm just going to have to cope alone. I love my son but by god I hate pregnancy. It's just coming back to me how horrid it was last time

Sickness then I got SPD and could hardly walk, then in the later months the heartburn and reflux

Lying in bed sleeping and suddenly waking up with stomach acid pouring out onto my bed. It got so bad it burnt my nose lining and I'd wake up with a pillow and face covered in blood from nose bleeds in night.

Oh god I'm dreading it now , I think I'm gonna greet 😥😥

Salene · 16/12/2015 21:20

You will be fine smellberry 😍

alduxbury · 16/12/2015 22:12

Elderberries according to LMP my 7+6 which is why I'm worrying. I've had no spotting/bleeding at all and only very occasional / mild cramps but I fear I should be feeling very sick etc and I just don't. Keep re-taking tests to make sure there's still a line (which there is and it keeps getting stronger) but I'm just really anxious.

I suppose all I can do is stay calm and rational and mention it to the midwife.

Hope those with appointments the next few days get reassuring news!

FourForYouGlenCoco · 16/12/2015 22:19

elderberries that's exactly what I had, hence getting early scan. Brown spotting, turned to red, then purplish, then back to brown, stopped for a couple of days and back again today, plus cramps and that heavy draggy feeling you get before period starts. So hard not to panic! But as of Monday there was a baby in there, so think we both just need to try and chill. The cramps are worrying me the most tbh as I'm sure I didn't have them like this with DD, but my uterus has taken a bit of a battering since so I don't know if it's just down to that. All this early pregnancy bit is so scary!
Good luck for tomorrow Mrs1986!
Salene that sounds dreadful, you poor poor thing! You're brave to do it again after only 15 months! I had a ridiculously easy pregnancy with DD and it still took til she was 2+ to want to do it again...to be fair she was (and still is to some extent) a horrible sleeper and it took me a long time to forget the traumas of hourly breastfeeding all night for nearly a year! Is your LO an easy baby/toddler?
cola you date pregnancy from LMP, so you're counted as 2 weeks more pregnant than you actually are if that makes sense! Eg I ovulated/conceived 5 weeks ago, but my LMP was 7 weeks ago, so I count as 7 weeks pregnant.

FourForYouGlenCoco · 16/12/2015 22:20

alduxbury you might just be one of the lucky ones! My pg with DD was so easy that had we not been trying I honestly wouldn't have known I was pregnant til I got a bump & started feeling movements! I'd have thought I was a bit run down thanks to winter and left it at that. Some people just luck out!

Salene · 16/12/2015 22:49

Four

He was a dreadful baby, first 3 months screamed constantly with colic , the first month was traumatic as I was stuck alone wondering what I had done as husband went back offshore when baby was 3 days old for 1 month

Pretty much also fed hourly from breast till 6 months old even when he started solids it's wasn't till he was 10.5 months till he finally slept for 5 hours straight in a row , I don't know how I coped with so little sleep for so long

I BF him till 12 months, by which time I was only giving him one morning feed.

He is easy to deal with during day , he now just sleeps in bed with us. I couldn't leave him ever to cry, as I'm too wimpy. So he sleeps with me and my husband in our bed and prob will for next year.

I'm dreading having a 2 year old and new born but age is against me so I had to just get on with it. The thought of how hard I'm going to find dealing with two alone when husband away scares me 🙈🙈. Just going to have to grin and bear it lol

FourForYouGlenCoco · 16/12/2015 22:55

Oh bless you, at least you'll get it over with in one go! It's possible that your DS and my DD had some sort of conspiracy going, I could have written your post!! Minus the colic, but with a hefty dose of 'refused to be put down EVER' - if she wasn't in the sling, she was being carried or co-sleeping! She still sleeps in with us at nearly 3 and a half 🙈 I've definitely made a rod for my own back! But I've come round to the mindset of 'whatever works' and will just be buying a bigger bed before this baby arrives Grin

Jw35 · 16/12/2015 23:18

Hope you're ok Smellsofberries that must be so scary. Saline what a rough pregnancy you had! I had the thing where you can't walk in my first pregnancy 12 years ago (can't remember name) but my 2nd last year was fine so all pregnancies are different.

I'm feeling sick, headachy and tired! The first trimester sucks!

OP posts:
SeriousStuff · 16/12/2015 23:48

Jw35 we didn't have any of the tests the first time round and won't this time.

Man the days are dragging until my next scan. Have bouts of feeling positive that everything must be progressing well, then moments of utter despair that the scan will just show that there's no heartbeat. Hate to be wishing Christmas away...

ToElleWithIt · 17/12/2015 08:02

alduxbury you might just be lucky. I had very few symptoms last time all through the pregnancy and was just lucky - an easy pregnancy.

salene what an awful pregnancy - you're brave doing it again.

We're on the same wavelength ladeis. I've literally just put in an order for a huge bed - emperor size. We went through various phases with DS. He now goes down in his cot no bother, but ends up in our bed about 4am. I suspect I may not even have that level of "success" with #2 so I figured that we may as well be comfortable.
