Some of you may remember I posted a while ago about my daughter in New Zealand whose baby was due on the 14th of June. I got a phone call this morning to say that she has been born, weighing 2lbs and is now being cared for in the NICU. I am beside myself with concern for both my daughter and the little one. How does one celebrate a birth like this when the fear is so encompassing that it's hard to be joyful? And not forgetting my wonderful son in law who must be feeling something similar only magnified tenfold.

Goodness jam, that must be very worrying for you all. I don't know much about it at all but I would have thought that 2lbs is a good weight for the gestation? You are right, very hard to celebrate when it is wound up with such worry. The medical care is excellent though these days so hopefully there will be plenty to celebrate over the weeks and months ahead. I will be thinking of you all!

cuphat · 19/03/2015 07:51

Oh jam, that must be so worrying. I'll be thinking of you all - please keep us updated on how they are doing.

To share a positive story, a friend of mine had a baby at 24 weeks weighing 1lb 07oz and she is now a happy and healthy little toddler - they really can do such amazing things these days and I'm sure she's in the next possible hands.

cuphat · 19/03/2015 07:53

Best not next!

jamakatab · 19/03/2015 11:21

Baby made it through her first night. She needed ventilation and the doctors say she's critical, but I think she's a little fighter. My daughter is a PICU nurse and maybe knows too much about what can go wrong, but it means that she can do some of the caring and procedures herself. First photo's look alarming, but every tube and wire gives baby a chance of coming through this. I'm trying to be positive and realistic - It's hard.
