Morning all, got some proper movement again last night! Very reassuring!

Notta... It's a shame there's no antenatal things near you... Have you checked out baby groups yet? It's a good way to meet people with same- aged kids. The Breastfeeding ones tend to welcome pregnant mums to be too, so you can get a bit more informed about it all. Not sure if that's your thing tho! At least you get to breathe clean air in the stick though... I live in a city and the air pollution is really irritating me at the moment.

Karate.. 10k! Wow!

What's the long piece of fabric sling called? I'm hoping my pal who has a 6 month old will pass hers on to me. She said she wasn't that keen on it but it looks great to me. I had a wilkinet last time, which was fantastic, but I gave it away.

OP posts:
Equimum · 01/03/2015 12:30

Wow, I couldn't run 10km when not pregnant karate! My current exercise is lots of walking as we don't have a car, and generally keeping up with a 2yo.

Dozy I'm really glad to your mum is doing well. It's so awful when parents are I'll, and I've found, it feels even worse during pregnancy.

Frolic, it's great that you can eat, and good choice of food. Like Dozy, I want to eat all the time, and the spicier the food, the better!

Guy, it sounds like a wrap sling. They tend to come in either a woven of stretchy fabric. We had a stretchy when DS was born and he virtually lived in it for first few months. We also had a woven, but that took more practice to get comfortable with. Once you get the knack, and get baby's weight distributed properly, you can easily wear even a toddler for long periods. I moved onto a buckled carrier when DS was one, but carried him in that right up until his second birthday. Can you tell, I'm a fan!

Equimum · 01/03/2015 12:30

Sorry for the essay!

Isabeau1980 · 01/03/2015 13:31

Hi guys. Sorry I haven't been around much. Work has been hectic recently and it has not been helped by someone taking the piss.

Anyway, I've only skimmed so sorry if I miss someone but

dozy Glad to hear that your mum's doing well. How are you doing?

frolic Glad to hear that the funeral went well.

karate Wow, I was meant to be doing a 10k but it's past the date that my doctor suggested is safe for me to run after. Sad

Congrats to those who fnd out the sex. I wasn't orginally plannng on findng out but DH really wants to and my next scan is 28 weeks (which just happens to be around DH's brthday) so I'm warming to the idea.

Had my first antenatal class on Friday. Here we have the first antenatal class (a booking class) before 20 weeks. Then the other 4 in the series are from around 32 weeks. Because I went so early (17+3) I was able to have my pick of classes so I decided to go from 29 weeks. What's the story in the UK?

After the diet talk in the class on Friday I'm really peppering about gestational diabetes. I'm a natural worrier so I'm just doing some research about it. I found an interesting thread here. I'm going to give a further root around the site. Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for letting me ramble and sorry I haven't been around much.

Isabeau1980 · 01/03/2015 13:37

Equimum If yours was an essay, what was mine? Blush Grin

Guyropes · 01/03/2015 14:16

equinum glad we have a resident sling expert! Yes, I think she did call it a wrap sling. It was stretchy and she said it was good when the baby was small, but not once it was bigger. Do you suppose the woven one has more structure for a less floppy baby?

Isabeau, is there any special reason why you are worrying about gd? I'm not clear on what the symptoms or risk factors are, and haven't given it much thought. Although apparently I need a GTT as one if my grandparents was diabetic. Have you got a GTT to look forward to?

Nobody has mentioned antenatal classes yet... I am hoping to go with my partner, but not full on NCT ones, just nhs ones. Has anyone else been given any information about them yet?

OP posts:
Isabeau1980 · 01/03/2015 15:47

Yeah Guyropes I have my GTT coming up on the 15th of May. My mother was diagnosed as Type 2 by her GP but another doctor and the diabetes nurse say that it would be impossible for her to have it looking at her numbers and overall.

The other reason I'm anxious it that (years ago) I was ballpark 15 stone, I never really weighed myself past 14 stone 4. I successfully managed to get down to a BMI of 24/25 but I'm stll worried.

As I mentioned in my previous post I don't know about antenatal classes in the UK but over here (apart from the first for booking) they're usually from 32-35 weeks for single births and 28-32 weeks for multiple births.

Sparrowlegs248 · 01/03/2015 15:57

I've been told about classes at the 'local' children's centre so will look into those this week. I am keen to breast feed too.

equinum can you suggest a buckled carrier for later? My friend recommends a manduca but I couldn't manage the top back clip on my own. I tried the baby bjorn which was great for putting on and off and putting baby into but there is a lot of negativity re the narrow bum area.

I think the sling i tried was a caboo? It was a wrap type but also the crossover on your back was 'ready made' if that makes sense.

Frolicacid · 01/03/2015 18:49

Thanks jock and karate. I will definitely look at a sling as well as a pram. I can see it being really useful for dog walking when I'm on my own.

Yay for a little boy ruby! I think that's what I'm cooking too. We will hopefully find out on 1st April.

I'm glad your mum is doing ok dozy. Make sure you take it easy as well. Something like that will have been a big shock to you and it's important that you look after yourself.

Are many of you having movement yet? guy mentioned having some. I was wandering when you all felt things. I'm 15 + 2 now and nothing so far. Lots of ligament type pains this past few days and my bump has really popped out.

I feel even better today! No sickness at all so far. Would I be a pig to have a Chineese tonight after last nights curry? I'm so excited about food again!

Frolicacid · 01/03/2015 18:52

Almost forgot - happy st David's day everyone Daffodil

Sparrowlegs248 · 01/03/2015 20:20

frolic I felt movement last Saturday night at 17wks. I was in the bath laying back, there was no mistaking it, felt like a fish flopping about! I've had it a couple of times since too. I'd say go for it with the Chinese! I've just been reading that your food kind of 'flavours' the amniotic fluid which the baby swallows, so you can start working on his/her tastes already.

I bought a few things today, just from Aldi with my weekly shop. Pack of 3 body suits (legless) 3 cellular blankets and a towel. All yellow/green/white so will do either way. DH gave my bump a kiss too! (he's kind of reserved sometimes so this was really lovely. )

Joskar · 01/03/2015 21:44

Personally I think the baby bjorns look pretty uncomfortable for the baby and the out facing is not great for the spine but I have lots of friends who really like them and I don't think it would actually harm a child to be in a narrow base sling as long as they had normal healthy hips. The Sheffield sling surgery WordPress blog has some really useful information about slings if anyone is interested.

I went to my local sling library and they sorted me out with a woven wrap which I think is ace. Really comfortable and easy to carry a toddler in too. It didn't take me or dh long to be able to tie it properly. It has the advantage that it fits everyone iyswim whereas with buckles not all body shapes will be comfy in it. I had a babasling for the first two months though and I thought it was pretty good. Horses for courses and all that. For buckles ergo, manducca and connecta are the ones people seem to swear by.

Equimum · 02/03/2015 07:33

It's so exciting that people are already finding out the sex of babies. We didn't last time but I think we will with this one. I'm already getting a tad tired if people telling me that I must be really hoping it's a girl this time. DH and I really are genuinely neutral about it, but when we say that, we just get 'understanding' looks.

Frolic, I hope you had that Chinese last night. You've got a lot of calories to catch up on Smile

Guy, I certainly wouldn't say I was a sling/ carrier expert, but we did do a lot of research when I had DS1. I'm not sure if wovens are really beat for less floppy babies. DS was never really floppy, and opened up very quickly. I think the limitations with the stretchy are that once the baby gets heavier, they tend to pull the sling down, which makes it less comfortable/ safe for everyone. As they get stronger, they can also pull back, which is obviously dangerous. Wovens are good for little ones, but stretches can be pre-tied and LO just popped in/out as and when. They are also generally much cheaper if you're not sure whether carrying/wearing is for you. Do you know if you have a sling library near you? They're generally the best places to try different things out and find out what works for you.

As for buckled carriers, they really are down to personal preference as they all have different padding and distribute weight differently. As Joskar says, they also depend a lot more on body shape/ size. We have an Ergo 360 which is very structured and is okay, but we found not to be ideal when DS got bigger. I live our Action Baby Carrier, which is much less structured. I only discovered them, though, once I found a sling library and tested a few out. I would reiterate Joskars advice though and avoid things like Baby Bjorns, Chiccos etc. the narrow bases aren't considered good for hip development and they are generally not very comfortable to wear. Most people who tell me they couldn't get on carrying seen to have bought these.

Equimum · 02/03/2015 07:42

Sorry, I've just remembered, not all buckles have a back clip. The ABC crosses at the back and clip at the sides so is less diddly in that respect.

clairexxx · 02/03/2015 09:17

Hi, how is everyone today?

Nottalotta I live in the sticks too so haven't found any pregnancy yoga or Aqua natal classes either. It's a shame as I would have enjoyed those.

Ruby congratulations on finding out your having a little boy!

Fanby my husband bought a few girly baby grows after the scan but we really need to start buying bigger things! We're decorating our spare bedroom this week so it will be great to start filling the room ready for the baby.

Does anyone use Instagram at all? I was thinking of creating an account and wondered if anyone would like to join I would set my account to private but thought it would be nice to post pics of baby things etc. I know there is a facebook group but I'm afraid I don't use facebook.

I finished knitting baby a cardigan yesterday so need to find out another pattern.

Have a good day everyone!

pinkie87 · 02/03/2015 12:29

I'm a little late to the party, but can I join please? Blush My EDD is 28th August, I was originally in the September thread but my dating scan moved my forward!

Frolicacid · 02/03/2015 12:46

Welcome pinkie!

I had the Chineese. It was so yummy. I was only a little bit sick after. Today I've had toast for breakfast and lovely chicken soup for lunch. Ni sickness so far! This is a huge improvement. I'm going to eat as many different flavours as I can in the next few days!

I hope Monday is treating you all well. Love the sling talk. We are out in the sticks with no library for hours, so it's great to hear everyone's opinions.

Fanby · 02/03/2015 13:19

Afternoon!

So exciting hearing who's having boys/girls – it's all becoming very real now!

Dozy Hope you're having/had a nice time at the lakes! The weather in London has been pretty miserable with bursts of sun, so hope yours is better and your mum is resting up - and you too!!

Re: antenatal classes – we've actually signed up to the ridiculously expensive NCT, I was a bit shocked at how pricey they were but fingers crossed they'll be worth it. Hopefully it'll be a lovely group as none of my friends have children/babies so it'll be nice to meet some people in the same situ locally. They take place in our favourite local pub which I find rather amusing.
My midwife gave me a leaflet on the NHS ones when I saw her at my booking in appointment but I personally left with the inkling that she wasn't very impressed with them :S?! Maybe she's on commission for the NCT!

Still no movement for me, (16+2), I think DH is itching for some :)

Notta Yay for the shopping! I'm very envious that you have an Aldi, we don't have one near us. It's always a first stop when I head home the parents for all the fruit and veg. I used to stock up on their charcuterie meats too, not so much needed these days...grrrr.

Claire are you going for a pink room :)? How exciting to start decorating! I'm on instagram, I didn't realise for a long time that you had follwers etc, I thought it was purely to use filters for your photos – nothing beats a bit of airbrush/filter. What's your username?

You lot have started freaking me out that I know nothing about slings/baby goods so was pleased to find that there is a sling library not too far from us at all. I also popped into a mothercare today, just to have a little mooch...who knew how many baby bottles/sterilisers/pump brands existed! I swifly moved onto the baby clothes where I could ooh and aww, still have bought absolutely nothing though.

Frolic So glad that you a) had the chinese and b) weren't too sickies!! Time to eat, eat, eat!!!

And finally a big warm welcome to pinkie and bump!! xx

Fanby · 02/03/2015 13:20

I feel I should apologise for the essay now...

ruby242 · 02/03/2015 14:53

Hello all!
Dozy your trip sounds lovely, no technology sounds like a perfect recipe for relaxation

Isabeau where abouts do you live? Sounds exciting going to antenatal classes already :) I have booked hypnobirthing for May and NCT for June, I heard NCT gets booked up quickly so thought I better book while I can. Yes Fanby, I don't have any local friends with children so am hoping to make friends at NCT too. Guyropes, no I haven't heard anything about the NHS classes yet (I'm sorted for classes now anyway but I assume maybe they talk to you about it after the 20 week scan?)

Clare how nice that you've already knitted a cardigan! My mum is going to knit me once apparently.

Frolic horray for less sickness and for yummy chinese, second trimester is so much better isn't it!

Welcome pinkie!

Now I know its a boy I have gone a bit crazy today buying things online, so much fun :)

Fanby · 02/03/2015 18:14

What have you bought Ruby? Share the shopping joy so I can live vicariously through you Grin

Isabeau1980 · 02/03/2015 19:18

I live in Ireland Ruby. We only had a general talk pretty much about diet and exercise plus the physiotherapists telling us about back pain, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, SPD and the like.

My next antenatal class isn't until the 20th of May.

PenguinTuxedo · 02/03/2015 20:03

We're having a girl! :)

Joskar · 02/03/2015 21:31

Glad your sickness is easing, Frolic.

I didn't buy anything really for dd. A few wee vests and the like. She got given masses of stuff. I bought the cloth nappies off Gumtree and a pasl sold us a change table (not essential but damn handy if SPD continues post birth) and she threw in a playmat (handy for 3 or 4 months) and a bouncy chair (really good, worth getting) and a door bouncer (used ours twice). Another friend gave us a bumbo which was useful for a few months. Some people don't like them because of hip issues but she was never in it long enough for it to be a problem. Get them for about £10 second hand. I tripped over the fecking Moses basket so often that we ended up getting a side car cot which was fine and handy for night feeds and she was in it for longer than the basket. I don't think I had anything by this stage last time though. Plenty time.

FirstTimeSprog · 03/03/2015 00:58

Hi everyone,
I am new to this thread but excited for my baby #1, who is team pink! My DD is 21st August, so it's great to be part of the conversation.

How is everyone doing with buying stuff yet? I feel like I should be doing some stuff, but then a little panicked I'm doing it too soon and should wait. Any thoughts? Starting to show a lot now which is very apparent as I am very short!!

Xxx
