You forget how bad house renovations are. And you also get very good at living with things 'not quite finished'. I moved into a house 9 years ago that had a horrid green carpet on the stairs - that was going to go immediately. In February when I moved out of the house, the carpet was still there. Ah well. Things become unimportant for various reasons.

In a minute I'm going to post a list of stuff I have for my 'starter baby kit' - can someone who has kids please have a look and see if there is anything I've missed out - the screamingly obvious stuff. Thanks.

ohthegoats · 28/07/2014 12:40

Small cot/bed from Ikea (from ebay for £12) to go by the bed with side off
Moses basket for living room downstairs
Sleepyhead mattress thing to go in both those - move between the two
Two swaddling blankets from Gro
A thermometer - Gro Egg (so sort of a nightlight too)
A monitor - but this is coming as a present, prob not on time
Two white cot blanket things - those holey ones
12 x short sleeved vest in newborn size (5 colours, 7 white)
12 x sleep suits in newborn size (6 colours, 6 white)
2 little hats
2 cardigans
Couple of pairs of socks given as a present
12 big muslins, a few little ones given as presents
Buggy (City Jogger) + bassinet for first months or so
Car seat - Maxi Cosi that also fits on wheels of buggy
Boba 4G carrier - could also wear in house if necessary
Nice colourful pushchair blanket
Crumble star fleece wrap thing
Changing mat to go on top of chest of drawers in bedroom
A baby bath that I didn't want to borrow, but have been loaned anyway
A swanky-ass changing bag for me!!

Two things that are on list, but not urgent:
Bouncy chair
Baby gym thing

I've also got an unopened packet each of 5 x tiny baby vests and sleep suits that we'll open if we need to, but obviously will know that nearer the time.

Nappies, breast pads, maternity pads - the disposables etc will be bought nearer the time, but those above are all the major things right?

Seems like loads.. urgh... but most is on loan, so needs to go back after about 6 months when we know what we are actually using properly.

YellowWellies · 28/07/2014 13:14

Goats looks like you've got all the bases covered. We didn't use a monitor for the first 3-4 months as if BF they cluster feed downstairs with you in the evening so are unlikely to spend a great deal of time any out of sight initially. Formal bedtimes happen a bit later when they can go longer than 3-4 hours without a feed.

ohthegoats · 28/07/2014 14:05

Thanks for checking it out - and yeah I'm not worried about the monitor to begin with.

Making that list, along with basically being ordered home from Cornwall (where it's lovely and cool, and calm and clean, and relaxing) to get on with decorating, has just induced a massive cry about what the fuck are we doing? I don't want a baby... I want to stay here being a selfish cow and reading books, kayaking, sailing, napping all day, going out without loads of multi-coloured plastic items. I want to be able to actually be useful at home and not just have to do the boring decorating. Also this will be the last time I'll be here on my own, and it's my 'special place' that I love. I always get a bit odd when I leave anyway, but this time is going to be really bad. Boyfriend left an hour or so ago because he 'couldn't relax when there is so much to do at home'... and I'm supposed to be following him up the motorway. I don't want to. Cry.

And slight panic.

Pregnantagain7 · 28/07/2014 14:08

Hi all, wow hats off to all the ladies doing major house renovations it must so hard especially when you just want to get organised! My decorater has started today makes things seem very real. yellow sorry your little one has got the pox what nightmare timing! goats your list looks good to me do you have any fitted sheets for the cot/Moses basket? A friend gave me a great tip when I had my first if you put a folded muslin across the Moses basket where the baby's head goes if it's sick you can just change the muslin or just take it off saves changing the whole bed.
Was thinking what I found really useful with my three when they were tiny and I think the best thing I had was a maxi cosi car seat cosi toes sleeping bag thing, it goes inside the car seat and has a hood you can fasten it right up to their chin and it keeps them toasty warm no need for coats (which are a nightmare with a newborn) it also has holes for the straps to go through so it's totally safe. I will definitely be using it again this time.

YellowWellies · 28/07/2014 14:13

Goats I could have written your last post three months before I had j. It will all be cool honest x

ohthegoats · 28/07/2014 14:34

Thanks... I know it'll be alright really. I'll do my best, boyf will be a great dad etc. This cry ended up with me crying about feeling mean only having one because I love my brother and really value the relationship with him, so would want my child to have a sibling too, but I've HATED being pregnant, I can't wait for it to be over and to feel normal again. There is no way I want do it again. So here I am crying about how my child will be an only one. FFS. Irrational, and possibly slightly too soon for that worry. Ridiculous!

To be fair, I've only lost it a couple of times... and not since 9 weeks, so that's pretty good going. Wah.

ohthegoats · 28/07/2014 14:36

Haha, child knows what I'm thinking... it just gave me a massive thump, proper body slam, whole bump moved.

Screw the limited sugar diet, I'm off to get a Magnum.

YellowWellies · 28/07/2014 14:38

Goats that's awesome going. I lost it much more often first time round. Not only will DH be a cracking Dad you'll be an awesome Mum. I was never cut out to be yummy mummy finger painting and baking material but I'm managing well as oddball, ranty, sarcastic Mummy and he loves me regardless! And as for number 2, I know you have health issues but never say never. Thanks

gunwalloe · 28/07/2014 15:50

On our way home from Cornwall, found the perfect house and was all set to make a offer but had doubts put in my head as there's a phone mast in the back garden of someone around 20-30 yards from the house. I've made it worse by googling aaaaahhh why aren't things easy?
I'm jealous of you lady's eating sugar I can't even have my morning tea now as it pushes me over my limit ( I hate sweetener)

mum2kiss · 28/07/2014 16:12

goats I didn't see sheets for the moses basket or cot on your list...also can't remember seeing towels for bathtub...but i may not have read it properly!

mum2kiss · 28/07/2014 16:14

Bath time not bathtub!

ohthegoats · 28/07/2014 16:17

Oh yeah - I've got those, sorry - in my head I included those in the moses basket bit. When I say I've got those, I mean I've cut up an old sheet! Got two free hooded towels from NCT.

ldt87 · 28/07/2014 16:19

Hi all, just checking in! How is everyone today? Xx

mum2kiss · 28/07/2014 16:20

Cool :) you may need a couple of pairs of scratch mitts in case baby decides clawing at its own face or pulling out its own hair is a fun thing to do to induce unnecessary screaming lol!

mum2kiss · 28/07/2014 16:21

That is a good list to go by though since I've not bought much at all yet!

gunwalloe · 28/07/2014 16:26

Ldt87 I'm good just starving! How are you?

I really need to get buying seeing as I'm down to 8 weeks 1 day eeek

Kirstipops · 28/07/2014 17:13

Eek I heard today that a girl who works in my office building had her baby at the weekend, she was 28 weeks, both she and her baby girl are doing fantastically well though, baby weighed 2lbs 2oz.
Payday for me today so bought lots of baby stuff online and ordered an electric aromatherapy oil burner for me for using with my natal hypno CD and taking to the hospital. Why I am so excited about this last thing is beyond me, though it beats the trip to Primark for big granny undercrackers and pyjamas that fit me, which is my next port of call...

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 28/07/2014 17:41

Shopping is definitely to be done online for me. I got the major rage in primark on Saturday Angry Apparently there is no specific maternity section & its in with all the other stuff? Well all the pregnant ladies must have come in & swiped it all because i couldn't bloody find it! I ended up saying very loudly next to a shop assistant "Lets go, this shop is shit!", not my proudest moment Blush

fedupofrainydays · 28/07/2014 17:46

Today I could really do with a proper alcoholic drink. Ie not a taste but a huge glass of wine.

Kirstipops · 28/07/2014 18:19

Yeah it's so annoying Jellybeans! I can't handle the shops on a Saturday anyway, far too impatient in crowds! Luckily I know where they keep the pants and jimjams, I just got them in Jabba the Hutt sizes.

porcito · 28/07/2014 18:25

Me too fedup. Or even a bottle. Still surrounded by s* in the new house, and can't do anything for myself to fix it. And to top it all off, the cot I'd ordered from Walmart is now out of stock, but they took my money anyway. So now I have no money and no cot. So angry. And I can't complain effectively in Spanish so a rant on here will have to do in the meantime. It's so hard to find stuff here so I was so pleased with myself. GRR:

Sorry to hear about your sick baby Yellow! Hope he's feeling better.
