On money and work - I started a new job just a few weeks before the BFP, so I'm not entitled to employer's full maternity benefits (which aren't spectacularly generous even in full). With hindsight it looks like a poor decision - swapping a job which was low-stress, flexible and with good maternity benefits for one which is much more challenging and is going to leave me many thousands worse off. But at the time we were starting to doubt the BFP would ever happen for us, and the idea of turning down a great career opportunity to stay in a baby-friendly job without a baby seemed crazy. Typical eh?

coco808 · 29/12/2013 10:55

that's sod's law plateofcrumbs but i'm sure it will all turn out for the best. I will be getting no maternity pay either and have to arrange a locum to cover me, which is going to be a right pain!
About travelling Grin we are planning to go to NY end of April for our wedding anniversary!

coco808 · 29/12/2013 10:56

does anyone know what is the cut off period for travel when pregnant? do we need a midwife/doctor letter too?

Plateofcrumbs · 29/12/2013 11:10

Thanks coco it was definitely the right decision at the time - ask me again in 2015 when I'm broke and juggling a baby and a demanding job! Grin

On travel - for flying I think doctors note after 28 weeks is the general rule but different airlines have different policies. After about 36 weeks I think flying is out.

coco808 · 29/12/2013 12:09

thanks plateofcrumbs. I need to plan my trip to Canada to help my nephew who is in a bit of a pickle! Unfortunately, I can't go before March due to work but this is something I have to sort out before the baby arrives.

Just got a call from the clinic for my harmony result...1:10,000 so I am very pleased. They asked me if I want to know the sex and I chickened out and said no...DH is going mad because he really wants to know Grin

MrsB2013 · 29/12/2013 13:12

I'm trying to talk DH into having a holiday before baby comes. We should really save as much as we can though, as I'm self employed, so wont get much mat pay!

Great news Coco I'd of wanted to know the sex!!

Is it too early to buy things for the baby?? I'll be 14 weeks on Tues, I was planning on waiting till after the 20 week scan, but there are some great deals on moses baskets in Mamas&Papas Hmm

AuntieMaggie · 29/12/2013 13:50

I'm at risk of losing my job as there are loads of cuts going on at work but trying not to think about how the hell I may have to get another job after baby arrives. I'm also a bit of a workaholic so not sure how I'm going to cope with being on maternity leave.!

MrsB I want to start but feel like its tempting fate somehow...

jaykay987 · 29/12/2013 14:25

I've decided to mentally shop, but not physically shop until after 20week scan. There are some good deals, but there's bound to be a spring sale or something between now and June (or so I keep telling myself).

JuiceInAWineGlass · 29/12/2013 16:54

Hi- congratulations to everyone with good scans in the last few days- we had ours this morning and saw baby waving and wiggling for the first time! My bladder was too full though so I had to go and lose some (but not all) liquid- this baby is already teaching me so many random life skills.... At least the lessons in lying are pretty much over - so pleased we can now tell people properly. Due date moved to 9th- that whole 3 days is making me feel better that my jeans are really tight after Christmas...

teaandkittens · 29/12/2013 17:25

I'm so jealous of all of you having scans...mine's not until the 16th and I'm going mad waiting! Do you think they'll put it forward if I phone and ask? I'll be 13+4 on 16th so it's really late.

Plateofcrumbs · 29/12/2013 18:44

No harm in asking teaandkittens - although the blurb that came with my scan appointment said in no uncertain terms that the date given was 'like it or lump it' so might be worth checking your letter to see if your hospital says anything similar. I think there's v heavy demand at the hospital I'm referred to though which might explain the attitude.

MrsA2 · 29/12/2013 19:46

teaandkittens my community midwife said if I couldn't make the scan date then just to call up, be really nice on the phone and they'd definitely offer an alternative appointment.

I'm sure it varies hospital to hospital but I'd give it a try.

ismarah · 29/12/2013 20:10

Well, we are mostly in the 'making lists' phase of shopping but were thinking of popping by John Lewis tomorrow and looking at travel systems / push chairs. Won't buy anything but as I am rather vertically challenged, we need a good size for me to deal with.

Other than that our bucket list appears to be dribbled in paint, from the bucket...it's all DIY things! Bah.

Mrsc020987 · 29/12/2013 20:34

I bought a tandem pram yesterday, it was a steal and a one off buy now at this price type situation i couldn't pass it up! I have most things as dd is only 11 months and got everything unisex, i never set out to buy anything as i thought the same but i couldn't pass it up!

Incapinka · 29/12/2013 21:49

For holiday suggestions morocco is amazing. I went when 6 months pregnant with DC1 and had the most fab time. We stayed in the Atlas Mountains and the food and hotel was amazing.

Is anyone having their scan on the 6th? I am!! Will be 12.6 by then and just wondering if anyone else will be having it done at the same time. Will be first scan of this baby... Eek!

Blueberry234 · 30/12/2013 05:21

I am awake and nervous, scan in 5 hours. Thinking about getting up and sticking some good distraction tv on!

BlueC2 · 30/12/2013 05:44

TV might be a good plan blueberry

I'm up getting a snack-just soooo hungry! And I now have a cough to go with my sore throat. Got to make docs app for DH who's really not well again. Anyone else started to get heartburn already? Sure it started much later on with DS so not sure if it's this cold which is causing it?! Eitherway gonna have to get some gaviscon in!

DH and I had a long chat last night about 2014 and have agreed it's going to be a tough year financially but once I can work again in 2015 then things should start to pick up and 2 DC is enough for us so we can then start to move forward from tiny DC stage. It was a useful chat as means I have a sort of goal to get through this next year which feels slightly less daunting than it was.

5 days til scan. 12 weeks tomorrow :) finally!

icklekid · 30/12/2013 06:24

Hi ladies have been lurking in this thread for a while but decided to take the plunge and post. My scan is also today and so nervous. Im 13+4 so its quite late currently due 29th June but this thread seems ti fit me better than June as going through same things at same time. I'm so scared the scan isn't going to be positive as told parents and in laws at Christmas...I just know to many people who have miscarried...fingers crossed for you blueberry

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 30/12/2013 08:25

Welcome icklekid and good luck for your scan today.

Incapinka, my scan is also on the 6th. One week to go!

AuntieMaggie · 30/12/2013 08:48

Good luck for your scans today.

Today is the day I'll get a call if there are any problems with the nuchal test so really nervous. The weather here is horrible so not much choice but to stay in and distract myself with netflix.

MrsA2 · 30/12/2013 08:56

Good luck with the scans ladies. Netflix for distraction on a horrible morning sounds good Auntie, and fingers crossed for no phone call.

Anyone have NYE plans? We are going to some friends, just to a pub near their house. I haven't managed to stay up past half 9 for weeks - and half 9 is a struggle - so no idea how I'll make it to midnight. At least their house is nearby if I want of head back early I guess, just don't want to be the dull pregnant friend!

talulahbelle · 30/12/2013 09:44

Just had a great scan at 10+2. Lots of movement and baby measuring correctly for my dates. Sonographer had a bit of trouble getting a clear picture due to loads of bowel gas Blush
Feeling happy today, next scan in two weeks.

MrsA2 · 30/12/2013 09:47

Just got my screening results through the post, risk is 1:3008 which I know is better than my background risk at 31 (1:753) but my HCG levels seem very high so I'm a bit worried.

Results were as at 12w2:
Nuchal 1.7
HCG MoM 3.57 (1 is average, higher is worse)
PAPP-A MoM 1.37 (1 is average and it is lower that is an issue so this seems ok)

With 1:3000 I don't think we'll do any further testing as I know this is pretty low risk but I am worried about the high HCG. Anyone know whether there are also other issues that high HCG could be a sign of?

ismarah · 30/12/2013 09:47

Fingers crossed for scans today - yay Talulah for yours.

Saw magic words on my app today, 'second trimester'!

AuntieMaggie · 30/12/2013 10:21

NYE we're going to the cinema and maybe some food then come home. I'm getting really tired in the evenings and then can't sleep. I have been off work since Christmas eve though so think it might be lack of activity!

MrsA I have no idea about high HCG levels - could you call your midwife for advice?

Talulah glad your scan went well.

ismarah my app pops up with a reminder about halfway through the day on a Sunday - its great isn't it? :)

I feel uncomfortable today. My boobs are solid and really heavy and I'm really aware of my stomach.
