Had 16 week midwife appointment (actually only 15 weeks because of scan date changes) and was so quick! About 10mins! She tested urine, felt stomach, said would listen to heart beat next time and answered any questions. She did have blood results back and downs syndrome risk which was low- had presumed they must be as tested on 30th dec and hadn't heard anything but still good to hear. Felt very uninformed as she was telling me lots of facts and I had to keep asking is that good?!

Plate glad that you spoke with a good midwife and feel more confident in your next steps.

Nancy I'm going to take a look at some of the natal hypnotherapy CDs, at the moment it does all seem a bit too hippy-ish to me but I'm willing to give anything a go if it means labour could run more smoothly (I realise there is lots out of my control that it cant help, but still...)

Good night sleep for me, I needed that. Off to the midwife shortly and then a full on day in the office ahead but hooray it's Friday.

Congrats everyone, glad to hear everyone is settling into the pregnancy thing!

Weird question, if I had baby in a hospital, and 4 hours later or whatever I wanted to go home, can they refuse? Or can I discharge myself against medical advice?
Me and my partner we're talking about it and he said he doesn't think I would be allowed to leave?! I'm dreading the actual hospital stay after, and my dd I was kept in for 5 days, the last 2 because she had developed jaundice. Obviously in my after birth state thought it was my fault and had a complete breakdown! but it was because she didn't see sunlight at all! Just wondering what my options are?

ismarah · 17/01/2014 09:24

Tents If everything goes perfectly with you and bean, depending in the hospital you might be allowed to go home within 6 hrs. Have a look at your hospital's website and see what their maternity wards say about how they operate. Hopefully, yours will be as full of information as mine was.

If something doesn't go to plan (epidural needed but not planned for, for ex.) then you would reasonably (?) be made to stay until you were stable and sorted. Asking to leave under those sorts of conditions might get you many frowns.

Just back from my midwife appointment and heard baby's heartbeat, so lovely to know it's still beating away, I'm such a worrier.

Otherwise just a urine check and she talked through my results from the earlier blood and urine test and the scan.

Me too tent. I hate hospitals. I know it is an irrational fear, but doesn't stop me shaking and crying wherever I think about it too long.

DH just keeps telling me to pull myself together, and (his new favourite) you can't show your fear to the baby otherwise you'll pass it onto them!

Do you think it's reasonable to add you want as short a hospital stay as is possible/safe to your birthing plan? It's is really concerning me. I guess at least it is distracting me from worrying about birth which is the bit I should be worried about!

My preference would definitely be to walk off the labour ward and go straight home. The thought of being submitted to the post natal ward without DH terrifies me.

MrsB I just wanted to weigh in on your request for a C-Section for non-medical reasons. If I were you, I'd do some research so that you can go and show them that you understand the risks and then just stick to your guns. Calmly assert that you've considered all options, and that this is the decision you've come to. You might have to really push but don't let them put you off. It's your decision. And, on that, don't let anyone else comment on it either. I've been really taken aback at other people's reaction to my decision (honestly, it astounds me that anyone other than my DH might give a toss as to how I give birth) so be prepared for that.

FWIW I'm having a C-section for non-medical reasons too. Not fear in my case, I just don't feel the need to labour. I want a baby, not a "birth experience" and so a c-section seems like the obvious option to me. It also neatly avoids the 5% risk of incontinence and the 1/1000 risk of brain damage to the baby (1/10,000 in a c-section). Patients with my consultants are all famously up on their feet and able to walk the next day so I'm satisfied that it's the correct decision. Each to their own and I completely understand that lots of women feel the need to labour naturally, I just don't. So I've made that clear from the start. It was quite upsetting to have two work colleagues tell me that I'm selfish out of the blue. I don't comment on their birth choices, so why do they feel the need to be nasty about mine? It doesn't affect them in the least but some people will always be looking for a reason to hoick up their judgey pants and to flash their sanctimummy card. Ignore, ignore, ignore.

jaykay my consultant appt was before my 12 week scan and included a very brief discussion about my medical issues and a lecture about bmi... I have a 36 week scan and appt. My 16 week appt last week was very boring - mw checking my blood and nuchal results and sticking them in my yellow book, wee sample check and reiteration about normal/not normal symptoms and what no to call if I'm worried.

icklekid I know the 16 week check was just so un-exciting!

plate Just top let you know the private consultant I saw in Oxfordshire works one day a week for Prof Nic. and she has worked with him for 12 years. She is Dr Victoria Heath and is wonderful so you are in the very best of care with that team.

After her assessment my risk went from 1 in 56 for Downs to 1 in 1128. Which sounds fab to me but when compared to other results on this thread isn't that great, She was very confident that the baby was fine though.

MrsB yes I will be in RBH, Although DH wants me to change to Basingstoke because 'parking is easier' Hmm. I don't care because I won't be driving Grin my midwife has suggested I stick with the RBH as the consultant there (Pat something) is a thyroid specialist and apparently the new Birth centre is amazing. I think our dates are close as well so I may even see you there!

Am still in pain due to trapped nerve, am off work today as puking loads still and going to MILs for a long bath (our bath is awful). My cousin is due in March and in severe pain atm with SPD which I never even heard of but apparently am to expect. grrr. Who are all these women that have pain free pregnancies???

elliejjtiny · 17/01/2014 12:09

re the postnatal ward I went straight home from the delivery room with DS2 and DS3 but had a C-section with DS4 so stayed in for 3 days. There are advantages and disadvantages to both I think. I'm not sure what to ask for this time. With this being my 5th I'm expecting afterpains from hell so I'm tempted to stay in for the really good painkillers. However DS4 is so young still.

re non medical C-sections You won't get any judgy pants from me. I really don't want another C-section myself but I think that as long as mum and baby are both safe (eg not trying to give birth to a premature breech baby in a field!) then we should all be allowed to make our own birth choices.

Tried to pee in a pot today and got most of it on my hand, yuck. I should be an expert at this by now!

Not posted for a while but have been trying to keep up!

plate glad you feel more peaceful about CVS next week.

Interesting hearing about 16 week checks-had forgotten how underwhelming it can be though I heard DS1 heartbeat at his which eclipsed everything-hoping to hear heartbeat at this one on 29th. Still keep having irrational 'is it all ok?' moments despite no evidence of anything being wrong so hearing the heartbeat would
Slept terribly last night but manage be good!

Slept terribly last night but did manage to get DS1 to his swimming lesson-have decided that is also my aquanatal workout as was exhausted afterwards and then had to contend with first (in 18m of taking him swimming) poo in swim nappy which literally went everywhere Blush total nightmare! The joys of parenting :)

I am near Heathrow not far from Berks/Bucks border if anyone this side of Berks/Bucks?

Happy Friday all! Think we're going to need a new thread soon this ones filling up fast!

zing thanks for the thread, that's a good one :-)

I'm currently glued to the couch with a sleeping 3 year old. Terrible night - she has a temperature, was distressed, just wants cuddles. Which is fine, but I need to wee and when I tried to move, she got upset, so I'm stuck here for now.. My mum is popping round soon, hopefully I can grab a shower and wee then!

non-medical c-sections I had an EMCS with DD and at the time remember thinking that I wouldn't wish a c-section on anyone. But, I do understand that birth can be traumatic. I think that as long as you understand the risks of a section too, and that it is definitely not an easy option and recovery can be hard, then go ahead, and I hope your mw supports you.

Birth is not about 'an experience' as another poster said, it's a process - whether vaginal or surgical - you go through to have a baby at the end. Some people are lucky and that process goes smoothly, others are not so lucky and it can be awful.

Report
AuntieMaggie · 17/01/2014 15:09

My understanding about csections from people I know that have had them is that a planned one is a completely different experience to an emergency one. I've no plans to request one at the moment but if its suggested to me then I will take it because as theborrower put so well its about the baby not the process. And to be honest I think there are plenty of other things to get worried about when having your first child than how it was born and what people think.

Yes, sorry, should have said, planned sections are probably different to planned ones. But the recovery can still be hard - we don't have zips down there - and it is major surgery, after which you will be expected to take care of a newborn. You will still need support afterwards. In a way, the pain and difficulty starts after the birth, if you see what I mean.

Report
theborrower · 17/01/2014 16:15

Planned different to unplanned, obviously.

HomeIs have you had yours agreed? Can you pm me with any links to useful websites, I've had a look but don't know how much info I will need. I've got a few friends who have had sections, so I will ask them stuff too. I also want a baby, not the whole "birth experience". I think everyone should have the birth they want.

I know a section is a major operation, and it has its own risks, but for me personally that is what I want.

Thank you all for not being judgemental on the subject, I know some people don't agree with it.

Liquid RBH is a nightmare to park, for my 12 week scan it too us 50 mins to park, and that was on one of the side roads in the end!

I have my 16 week appointment with normal MW on Mon, so will ask her about CS, then Fri is my Consultant MW appointment at the hospital

Hope everyone is ok!!!!!
