Haha zing I remember reading some of that thread a while back and nodding at the familiarity of some of the stories. I have met a couple of truly barking moms here (and tonnes of lovely normal ones thankfully).

thank you everyone, for all your thoughts on C section.

LaDay and anyone else who is wondering, I choose one because I almost have too much info. I'm not going to bore or scare anyone with the details. I'm training to be a Medical Negligence Lawyer on top of my current job (clinical) and all I see and hear and read is horror stories. It has put the fear of God in me and my colleagues. No amount of counselling or hypnotherapy is going to help because the facts and figures are staring at me everyday. But I never get to read about nice natural births...as those cases would never end up in court!

If I end up in labour on a ward, I will question EVERYTHING the midwife says. I won't be able to relax and 'get on with it'. Whereas a planned surgical procedure will be an entirely different matter.

I've had a lot of criticism at work already, but surprisingly none from my obstetrician friends.

Sorry to ramble on...

ellie thanks for the link Smile

I would really appreciate any C section convincing facts (for the Consultant) anyone can share with me. I have to be ready for my appointment on Tuesday

Dear IHatePopUpTents - about self-discharge. All individual adult patients have the right to leave hospital at a time of their choosing, unless there is evidence that they cannot make an informed decision because of an underlying illness (for example severe dementia, psychosis etc). To physically prevent you from doing so would legally be an assault. I have worked for more than 10 years in medicine and have often seen patients discharge themselves against medical advice - that is their choice.

If staff do not think it is wise for you to leave, they may ask you to sign a form to show that you understand why they have advised you to stay and the risks of going. In general, staff would not ask you to stay unless there was a good reason. If you go early, it may not be possible to complete all of the discharge process (for example letters, prescriptions) but essentially you can leave when you like.

Re: guidance on C-section.

NICE guidelines are available here: guidance.nice.org.uk/CG132/NICEGuidance/pdf/English

This is A few basic things extracted from them:

Maternal request for CS

  1. When a woman requests a CS because she has anxiety about childbirth, offer referral to a healthcare professional with expertise in providing perinatal mental health support to help her address her anxiety in a supportive manner. [new 2011]
  2. For women requesting a CS, if after discussion and offer of support (including perinatal mental health support for women with anxiety about childbirth), a vaginal birth is still not an acceptable option, offer a planned CS. [new 2011]
  3. An obstetrician unwilling to perform a CS should refer the woman to an obstetrician who will carry out the CS. [new 2011]

Appendix C contains a summary of the comparative risks and benefits of VB vs ECLS (for both mother and baby). These figures come from research with large groups of women - each individual's risk will differ depending on personal circumstances. These statistics are difficult to understand without medical knowledge. You would be able to ask your consultant your own personal risks.

Hope that is helpful - sorry if sounds very medical

Zing Thanks for the thread link - it was highly amusing and terrifying at the same time.

I can totally do the pregnancy thing, have the baby and toddler and all that stuff that happens in the house. But ask me to socialise with (initial) strangers and socialise my child and I start to struggle. I know all of the things one should do but for instance, I know zero English nursery rhymes. I know no games to play. I assume people won't like me (Can I get a porter for my baggage or should I supply my own?) and I'm earthy and sweary and can't stand nicey-nicey ness.

Sigh. I'll get me coat.

Over the weekend I'll post something about my wished for birth experience (very relaxed, natural, no epidural) and actual EMCS (it was a crash CS with baby born 15mins after the decision was made) and my request for a ELCS this time round. Despite previous CS doesn't seem guaranteed but I'm not in UK.

coco that sounds really scary hearing horror stories at work all the time, no wonder you'd rather have a C-section.

ismarah Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, All the king's horses and all the king's men, couldn't put Humpty together again. There you go, now you know 1 English nursery rhyme Grin. You'll be fine, baby groups aren't compulsory but you never know, you might find one you like. Some of them have themes like baby music or baby sensory and some of them are just a load of toys in a church hall. I started going to a breastfeeding group with DS1 because there was cake Smile.

I haven't joined this thread but have read a bit as am pg with DC 2 due in July, and thought it might help some to pop on with this- I have an ELCS date for July 10th and got this agreed when I was 11 wks.

My story is a vaginal but ghastly forceps and ventouse delivery for DD1, and was determined never to attempt a vaginal delivery again. I did lots of research very early on and at my booking in appt I told the midwife my birth story with a lot of tears (not faked, but helpful!) and references to fears about my mental health in this pregnancy if it was not agreed early on.

The midwife referred me to the most friendly consultant she could for 2 wks time. I actually only saw his registrar but took the same approach as with the midwife. I was offered a referral to a "birth choices" midwife which I politely refused, saying that my mind was made up. I quoted the stats on risk factors for both sections and vaginal births and made it very clear this was a rational decision. But basically I was met with no serious opposition and the date was set there and then.

The relief for me was enormous. I have been on the thread about ELCS for medical and non-medical reasons and know that others have not found it so easy. I suspect that without a previous delivery to base my fears on it would have been much harder. That said, having had the experience I had first time round I would never question anyone for preferring the risks of an ELCS over a vaginal delivery even without a prior bad experience.

Good luck to those of you hoping for an ELCS, I hope you get what you want.

Just hopping on to say I think I may have just felt some movement from little bean-a feeling quite reminiscent of when DS moved and like bean was swimming or someone was stirring the inside of my tummy :) it may be wishful thinking of course but a nice thought to say goodnight with!

DS has decided to get me back into practice at getting out of bed outrageously early on a Saturday morning, reminding me how hard it can be to pull yourself out of bed.

First timers, now is the time to start setting your alarm clock for 6am on the weekend so that you get woken up, and then enjoy and appreciate not needing to get out of bed and being able to roll over and go back to sleep. As you get closer to due date also do this at 3am. Wink

Report
Plateofcrumbs · 18/01/2014 08:12

Set the alarm for 6am? Hahaha - I seem to wake up at 6am regardless. At least without any DCs I get to loaf in bed until a more reasonable hour.

Trying to be positive about the test results stuff but frankly I'm on a bit of a downer. One of the markers we had was for a rare syndrome, and they don't have enough data on it to provide a "1 in X" risk factor as they do for Downs etc. That is really, really nagging at me. 1 in 98 is fine - i can get my rational head on top of that - but 1 in ?? is a bit of a bitch. I'm a "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" type so have been reading too much about TFMRs.

Anyway on a more positive note - as I now am trying to avoid telling work until we get results, I've been using this as an entirely valid excuse to buy a tonne of new drapey dresses and tunic tops from Cos. So if you'll excuse me I'm off to max out my credit card Grin

I think the sickness has finally gone - now hoping I get a second trimester glow some point soon. I've a quiet weekend planned, meeting a friend for coffee and directing DH in shifting furniture around as we start to empty the junk room ready for it becoming a nursery.

13weeks, I'm probably going to need a c-section due to previous abdominal surgery, so 1/3 of the way through!
