Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

Morning all!

Updates as requested, Cejay8 and newbie6.

I hope your scan goes well today, Disco and all the best for tomorrow, l3mma, and Tugs too on Friday.

Being a bit of a numbers geek I was just looking at the split of first time mums versus experienced mums and us first-timers make up almost 50% of the group! So, calling all mums with experience - what pearls of wisdom are you able to share with us about getting ready for being a parent? We'd love to learn from your experiences! What do you wish you knew before you had your first but no-one told you?

Birdies · 12/09/2012 11:38

octane I haven't had that, but sounds nice!!

Good news on scan mrs mallard and great job updating the list whilst bunty's away.

My top tips for first time mums would be:

  1. don't feel you need to change baby's nappy at all during the night unless they have pooed or nappy is leaking. I used to change it every time baby woke (a lot!). It's just not necessary

  2. don't beat yourself up if breastfeeding doesn't work out. You can't spot a breastfed child from a formula fed one. It's important to give it a good try, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work out

  3. don't be surprised by the extreme tiredness you're likely to feel. It does pass after a few weeks. In the meantime, don't even worry about getting dressed or tidying/cleaning

  4. don't feel you are missing out if you don't want to go out to mum and baby groups in the first few weeks. Just do what you want to do and you won't be the only one who takes some time to get out

  5. when you do start going out, have a bag packed the night before with nappies, wipes, nappy bags, mini pot of nappy cream, change of baby clothes, a couple of bibs and a baby toy or two. Then it's not such a mad rush when you do head out

Birdies · 12/09/2012 11:40

Ps salt I had a meltdown the other day and turned into a mad woman - this has never happened to me before but I actually threw a tub of butter across the kitchen towards DH. Thankfully it didn't hit him but it went everywhere and I felt quite guilty!

allchik · 12/09/2012 12:35

Great tips Birdies especially the bag one....makes a lot of sense!

DiscoDomina · 12/09/2012 12:40

Scan in a few hrs we are still unsure if we should find out the sex!We were adamant that we wanted a surprise but now i want to know and so does DH. Hmm so we shall see if we find out at the eleventh hour!

SquealyB · 12/09/2012 13:18

Good luck with the scan disco. Friends of our were not sure if they wanted to know so got the sonographer to write it down and put it in an envelope for them just in case they changed their mind and did want to know! Maybe that is an option if you can't decide right now?

Mrsmallard nicely done on the list and great idea to ask for pearls of wisdom. Looking forward to reading them all and thanks for your contribution birdies.

salt - I have had so many of those at this stage I have lost count. Darn hormones!! My poor DH tends to be mostly fearful at the moment.

Tugstonia · 12/09/2012 13:18

Good luck with your scan disco!

Has anyone else noticed that their veins are a lot more noticeable all over the body? The other day DP said "oh my god, your boobs are really veiny" and then I had a good look and noticed very blue, prominent veins all over my tummy as well, like a map. I'm assuming it's just because there's more blood being pumped around and nothing to worry about, just freaked me out a bit!!

SquealyB · 12/09/2012 13:42

tugs - yep, I am the same. Even the veins on my arms are more visible. You are right is due to extra blood activity and nothing to worry about.

On the weight gain discussion a couple of days ago. I confess that I have been scale dodging so have no idea how much I have gained BUT I am sure I have definitely gained!! I guess I will find out next time I have an appointment with the midwife Blush. Just trying to concentrate on eating good food at the moment. Is anyone else pretty much constantly hungry right now? Tell me it is due to a growth spurt please ????

Birdies · 12/09/2012 14:17

Well ladies, I not only have veiny boobs (though they do go), but I also have varicose veins all up one leg and one that's just appeared on the other. And those buggers don't go. So whilst I feel very healthy, full of energy, no sickness, shiny hair and glowing skin (which could all be quite annoying to hear for any of you who don't feel so great)....I do have really crappy legs to make up for it!!

Birdies · 12/09/2012 14:25

Oh squealy yeah me too, hungry most of the time! Am allowing myself treats though too which is a bit naughty.

allchik · 12/09/2012 16:00

I've started back at the gym recentley, just to try and keep active and fit....and perhaps help a little with the weight gain. Is anyone else going??? Its a bit boring as I like to go and work really hard but I have to bring it all down a notch now, but do feel good after....thought I might as well go over the next month as soon I will be too big to ant to go and will prob just swim instead.

tugs yup, mine are like that, not all of the time, but the other day it looked as though someone had got a blue felt pen and doodles all over them!

Good luck disco! I went for a suprise in the end and glad I did as love all the guessing...but can completely get the 'wanting to know' I did get very tempted before my scan :)

preggo bloody hell i bet thats awkward at work!? You poor thing! Hope the next few months go quickly for you so you can be tucked up at home away from annoying men and snuggling your baby :)

I don't know if any of you ladies would be interested but my husband and I are doing a 'sweepstake' for charity. Were asking friends/family to donate a couple of quid or so and guess the due date of our baby....all the money is going to Tommy's the baby charity (decided on this after our mmc in Feb) The winner gets wine and chocolate (although if you win it would more likely be a voucher as your all over the country lol!) anyhoo if you fancy its www.justgiving.co.uk/smallchin

Hoping everyone is well x x x x

CreepyCrawly · 12/09/2012 16:33

Had our second anomaly scan today, for them to double check her heart. All is fine, and she's still a girl. The sonographer I've had each time looks so much like my 'celebrity boyfriend' and it makes me so giggly Blush

Great tips Birdies, thank you.

Hope everyone is well!

Complicated24 · 12/09/2012 17:45

Brilliant tips Birdies. Looking forward to reading all the pearls of wisdom. We spent weekend with good friends who had a little girl last year and they provided lots of brilliant advice on what to buy and what not to bother buying as it was a waste of money for them, but I suppose each baby is different so what worked for them might not work for us. Their little girl didn't like moses basket. I don't know whether to buy one or not or just buy cot. Thoughts/advice from all those experienced mothers please.

I am feeling well and got shiny hair and rosy complexion and everyone tells me I am glowing. I am swimming once a week and need to increase to 2 or 3 times but work gets in the way. However, today for first time I noticed that my ribs were uncomfortable when sitting at my desk at work. I am now making a real effort to sit up straight and not slouch (which I should be doing anyway!). Is anyone else feeling like that? Bump is getting bigger every day and am loving looking properly pregnant at last.

Anyone going to Earls Court Baby Show in October? We've just booked tickets. I was looking for a discount code, but couldn't find one, so just hope we make lots of savings at show to justify cost. Want to order pram and cot there and all the expensive things as the discounts are supposed to be good, though am worried in case I am leaving it a bit late as I will be 30 weeks then. Have a good day everyone.

PixelCarrier · 12/09/2012 21:22

I've just finished my last 24 hour shift - Yay -so after a day in bed trying to catch up on sleep, it's been lovely spending half an hour catching up on how every one's been.

I did eat like a horse today though, and have definitely got my appetite back, once the morning vomiting has settled. Haven't dared look on the scales...

allchik I hope your're feeling better, less down and now breathing a bit better

I've been shocked into realising that Christmas is looming by pmgkt being so organised (very impressed!). Agree with Pascha that online shopping will have to be the way to go.

complicated - thanks for the tip about the dreamgenii. I'd looked at them, but they looked a bit insubstantial, and am trying to be budget conscious with maternity pay coming up, so I might try making something similar this weekend that I can fit our own pillows into...

Hope you're not in too much pain now doigetasticker. I climbed up on to a cupboard to get something this weekend and couldn't get down. Had to phone DH on my mobile to come and rescue me, as I was scared I'd slip and injure myself if I tried to jump down myself. Felt very feeble!

Thanks mrsmallard for updating our stats. Feel like I belong now!

I SO understand the meltdown salt. We went out on a date night the other night, and DH had to bring me home as I ended up in floods over tears over something completely minor.

Thanks birdies for all the tips. I think I need to copy and paste them into my diary for the week or two after my EDD so I remember them!

Glad your scan was ok creepy, and hope yours went well disco

Lora1982 · 13/09/2012 02:31

ugh woke up at 1 with a nasty stitch and cant sleep!!!! got to be up in three measley hrs :'(

Lora1982 · 13/09/2012 09:12

and i keep getting nosebleeds. might have to drink tea through a straw... its difficult drinking normally with tissue shuved up your nose :'(

DiscoDomina · 13/09/2012 09:36

So for the second time baby didn't want to play ball at the scan and was curled up asleep! I'm very jealous of all of you that each scan you have had your babies have been active! The baby did however give the sonographer a kick when she was prodding so baby would change positions, which was very funny.

I did find out the sex as DH was crestfallen when i suggested we not find out so i caved! It didn't take much! It's a boy! DH already has one of each and we had both wanted a girl, but i am really looking forward to meeting my son and i'm def glad we found out. Smile

happyhow · 13/09/2012 10:51

Great news Disco! Glad all went well.

I've def been feeling the increased hunger. Weight still staying fairly stable but I suspect that will change soon...

We put an offer in on the house we want and are currently in negotiations with the seller... They live overseas now so it's taking a little longer. We're also playing hardball which I don't think is helping!!!

My pelvis has improved over the last week since I went to the doctor. Not sure if it's because the paracetamol have now built up in my system and the support belt is helping or whether I am just learning how to move about properly and less! Not the easiest being a science teacher though and having lots of practicals that I need to walk around during.

MamaMary · 13/09/2012 10:57

Disco, glad your scan went ok - sounds like a chilled-out baby which can only be a good thing :)

Birdies your feelings about the term ahead match mine - I teach at a third level college and my heart sank when I saw the academic calendar and realised I have 15 weeks of teaching, prep etc to get through. This term last year just dragged by (partly because my classes were difficult) and I'm dreading that this one will feel even longer. Working right up to 21 December. But then off till baba arrives!

Advice for first-timers: my one piece of advice (if I could only give one) would simply be: RELAX. Don't stress about what your baby should or should not be doing, don't be tempted to compare your baby to other people's. They're all different. Just go with the flow. And I know it sounds a bit silly, but trust your instinct. I never thought I was a maternal person at all, but I quickly realised I do have a mother's instinct: I had it right from DD was born, and it's usually right. For instance, at 2 weeks' old my DH thought we should get DD into a stricter routine, but I strongly felt that that was unnecessary and she would find her own routine. So I resisted trying to impose one on her at that stage. I was right: she turned out to be an excellent sleeper and a very content little baby. (Stiill is - most of the time, though a toddler now!)

Breastfeeding: persevere and it DOES get easier (for me the first three months were the hardest. Then it got a LOT easier as DD started to feed more quickly). I only fed for 6 months as I had to go back to work. I was lucky in that I experienced no pain at all - that is not always the case. So I would say, if you're in a huge amount of pain, or your baby is not putting on weight satisfactorily, or it's just not working out - again just relax and give formula. Don't struggle on in agony or anguish - it's just not worth it.

Finally, don't be surprised or don't worry too much if you feel down quite a lot - I am normally a very calm, even temperament, but I experienced ups and downs like never before in the first 2-3 months. I didn't really feel 'myself' and wondered if I had post-natal depression. I did not. It was simply the hormones that come with being a new mother (and for me, with breast-feeding) and it's totally normal. There's also the tiredness factor which colours everything. As your baby grows, you will start to feel like yourself again.

Tugstonia · 13/09/2012 11:03

Yippee on good scan news! Thanks Birdies for all those tips, they're fab. Lora boo about your stitch, hope you got back to sleep. Happy glad your pelvis has improved. Hope the house negotiations go smoothly!

Scan tomorrow morning - eek! Feeling very excited, a little nervous and soooo curious to know what sex our little bun is, but we're going to have a surprise (I think - I might decide tomorrow that I have to know!).

Complicated you've inspired me to step up my exercise and have just been a for a nice long swim. Going to go at least twice a week in an attempt to tackle the weight gain.

Have a good Thursday everyone :)
