Pudding congratulations & what a great name! Lucian goes on my short list if I ever have a DS I think...

We are heading home today, we had to spend a third night in hospital after DD stopped feeding so well, which they decided was down to my nipples being too flat for her to get enough colostrum from.

So we had donor milk for the rest of the day & I started expressing colostrum which at least got a bit more into her.

To go home we'll have to take a supply of formula Sad but I'll keep on expressing & hope the milk comes through soon (can feel it is on its way) so hope the formula will just be a stop gap.

LaTristesse · 27/04/2012 08:27

marshmallow have you tried breast shells. You can wear them for a half hour before a feed and they help draw the nipple out. Not a permanent solution, but might help in the short term if you're keen to avoid formula.

marshmallowpies · 27/04/2012 08:36

LaT the midwife said that would be the next thing to try but it was 'too early' to try them yet. Perhaps she meant they can only be used once the real milk is in, not colostrum.

WhenDoISleep · 27/04/2012 09:01

pudding congratulations. I love the name Lucian - was on our long list.

marshmallow sorry you are finding bf a little tricky. I'm sure the MW's will help, but make sure that you have the numbers for the various breastfeeding lines handy, incase you want some additional support.

LaTristesse · 27/04/2012 09:28

marshmallow I think if it were me I'd try with them now, colostrum is so beneficial if you can get some into the bun it'd be worth it. Have you tried a breast pump? Just a little bit of pumping can draw the nipple out too...

LaTristesse · 27/04/2012 09:29

Bun?! Bub! And you can use shells while pregnant so don't see why you need to wait...

Bananna1 · 27/04/2012 10:21

Congratulations Pudding, great news, great weight and great name!

I had hoped I was in labour last night as I was getting regular period pains. But I've woken up this morning and nothing. Having a sweep this afternoon, so maybe that will get things going again.....

marshmallowpies · 27/04/2012 14:31

LaT I had started pumping yesterday but already had a blister on one nipple which MW today thought looked bad & advised me not to do any more until it heals.

However she did get me expressing manually and can now eke out a few drops, so we'll keep doing that.

Will talk to the MW again when we get our first home visit, we have an electric pump at home so as soon as I am advised I should start using it, I will!

Thaleia · 27/04/2012 16:07

Marsh - Do you think you've got probs because of the c-s? I've heard/ read it's quite common to start a bit slower but also that the baby isn't that hungry as he took a short cut rather than 36hrs of labour ....

Hubby will split up his PL, 1 day with me, I'll have to fend on my own and than the rest at home. There must be single mums out there who do that everyday and I have 2 offers of people who could come short(ish) notice should I need someone or something. I hope I do the right thing and that the big bad B won't hit me during or because of this.

Sorry, yet another question from your foreign friend: do I need to do something after the birth? I'll need the birth cert. to get a passport, sure, but do I need to register him with the council or something like that?

Bananna1 · 27/04/2012 17:15

Ouch - sweep bloody hurt. And there was a lot of blood. But nothing happening as yet. Have a feeling it's not going to work :(

WhenDoISleep · 27/04/2012 17:56

thaleia you will just need to register the babies birth at the registry office in order to get the birth certificate. The hospital will advise which registry office that you should use (given there are so many in London). You will need to ring and make an appointment usually - don't be surprised if you need to wait a few weeks. Once you have the birth certificate passports etc can get sorted.

The other thing you need to think about is getting baby registered with your GP - you will need his NHS number to do that. You should be given his NHS number as part of the paperwork that you get given by the hospital on discharge.

WhenDoISleep · 27/04/2012 17:59

banana ouch. Something might start later though, especially if things might have started moving last night.

marshmallowpies · 27/04/2012 19:05

Thanks Thaleia - yes that IS a very good point about CS babies not being so exhausted at birth and not being so hungry early on. That might explain why I thought I was doing so well with feeding the first two days...

Re. the birth registration - yes, phone them ASAP to get an appointment as the wheels of local councils turn very slowly...I already had issues trying to book my appointment for a wedding licence. Really long waiting list for appointments but when I rang them in late-ish 2011 for my 2012 wedding I was told 'we aren't taking bookings for next year yet' Confused

For DD we rang up today immediately we got the paperwork and got an appointment exactly a month from now.

balkanscot · 27/04/2012 23:44

Wow, lots of babies have made an appearance - well done to everyone, may they all be healthy and happy!

Hamish Aleksandar was born on Sunday 22 April at 6.:48 am, after a 27-hour labour, weighing 7 lbs 6 oz. What begun as a routine labour at the birth centre eventually descended into being rushed to the labour ward, epidural, hormone drip, and eventually manual rotation and forceps delivery. Only got home yesterday. The whole labour ward/midwives/doctors teams were absolutely excellent, NHS at its (almost) best.

Now settling in and learning how to breastfeed, hopefully it won't be long before I start producing a good amount for him to feed (right now I manage tiny 15 ml).

Bananna1 · 28/04/2012 04:04

Congratulations Balkan, great news on the safe arrival of baby Hamish. Sorry to hear you had to have the full works but glad you are both safely home Smile

Yet again I thought I was in labour tonight. Woke at 2.30 with bad period pains. But an hour and a half laying in bed stressing that it had to be 'it' and they have all gone.
Am sure it was because I stopped relaxing. DH's mum arrives in UK Sunday to see baby, is only with us a short while. She was last here 3 years ago. And my mum is away next weekend, so I keep stressing that baby HAS to come this weekend.
I know it's totally the wrong way to get baby to come, so need to relax and chill out, but am feeling totally pressured and stressed. Plus I don't want to be induced Wednesday.

Someone shoot me with a tranquiliser!

LaTristesse · 28/04/2012 07:20

Congrats Balkan, love love love his name! Smile

confuzed90 · 28/04/2012 08:04

My beautiful little boy arrived at 5.24 this morning, after coming into hospital yesterday afternoon with very bad pains, contractions, and was 3-4cm, finally got to 5cm after 4 hours as jake was laying on his side which aparantly makes labour more painful and slower to progress. Threatened with forceps and vaccuum but all went ok in the end and ended up natural, pushed him out with no pain relief as the gas and air I had stopped using to push, and dia-morphine had worn off!
He is spitting of his brother, blonde/white hair blue eyes!

Flisspaps · 28/04/2012 08:06

confuzed congratulations Grin

Flisspaps · 28/04/2012 08:07

Balkan well done you, sounds like a marathon stint there, I hope your recovery is speedy. Welcome baby Hamish Smile

LaTristesse · 28/04/2012 08:13

Well done Confuzed!

Was wondering how Notso was doing, she hasn't posted in a while... Anyone heard? Hope all's well...
