Quick question for MakesCakes - am still getting around to the ginger cake but have just noticed it requires stem ginger in syrup - never seen that here, do you think if I just threw a few lumps of stem ginger in some honey and left it to marinate itself it would work just the same? And what could I use instead of black treacle?
It's DD1's birthday in a week and a bit and I'm making pumpkin pie as her cake this year as I've made it a few times now and it's gone down really well. Just have to cut it into some birthday-type shape, ice it and add lots of crap smarties/Haribo/sugar strands and hey presto!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 24/10/2011 12:56

Whereabouts are you? Black treacle is sometimes referred to as molasses I believe...

I don't think stem ginger in honey would be quite the same, but I did find the following online:

Preserved Ginger recipe:
1 lb fresh gingerroot, peeled and scrubbed and cut into 2 inch pieces
1 1/2 cups water
1 lb sugar

Rinse scrubbed and peeled roots and soak in cold water overnight.
Drain.
Place in kettle in cold water to cover. Bring to a boil.
Drain and repeat process 3 or more times (depends on how old the ginger is).
In a separate pan, boil sugar and 1-1/2 cups water together for 20 minutes to make the syrup. Stir in the drained ginger root and heat until syrup comes to a boil. Remove pan from heat and let stant overnight.
Store in airtight glass jars in the refrigerator .

Oeisha, sorry to hear your promotion is looking less likely, that's not nice. I hope you're feeling happier now.

I am sorry for not responding to all the posts, I'm feeling sorry for myself as I rang for my GD test results this morning. They didn't give the results and said they want me to speak with the doctor, but they're not available till tomorrow. :(

Nanny01 · 24/10/2011 13:48

went to our 4d scan and saw our baby. At present baby is breach with legs up and hands up around his face. Was amazing to see his little cupid lips and you could see lots, Elliot wasn't in the best position and you could see fingers toes and of course the boy bits!

mummyzoe2012 · 24/10/2011 13:52

Ame is perfectly fine, she is breech and thats why i am feeling less movements, we saw her sticking her tounge out as us and blinking she was also playing with her feet. she weighs around 2.7 at the mo and the hosbital are happy with the way she is progressing.

not long now till we see her again in 4d this time.!

Nanny01 · 24/10/2011 15:13

mummyzoe- you will love the 4d

shonnomanom · 24/10/2011 16:50

The natural progression once the babies start to arrive is on to the PostNatal board found in the Being A Parent Section. Last time round we had an overlap of time where both threads were operational and as you pop you graduate iykwim

Ahhhh I really want to know if this is a boy or a girl in my belly!!!

On the way home from Nursery this morning I discovered exactly where the local mw lives! AND we joked about if she is working christmas day and im in (as per all my crazy dreams) she will bring me in some turkey sandwhiches Smile How nice.

greenlady I also 'sleep' in a pillow fortress, I dont stay still long enough to get comfy in a dreamgenii unfortunately

Cant believe im back at work already. Trying to stay positive. Week 1 of 5 started.
However I am pondering the possibility of finishing up before Nov30. Iv done the math and as im going back to work mid April I reckon financially it is possible..... Hmm Hmm

ParsleyLion1 · 24/10/2011 17:00

If I'm the only one left on here that hasn't popped will you all come back and visit? Sad

Mind you I was chatting to a lady at work today I'm 26 weeks and theoretically 2 weeks off 3rd trimester I think. She said "well I wouldn't know much about 3rd trimester, I didn't get very far into it " turns out she popped at 30 1/2 weeks! No issues ,no problems, baby just felt like an early exit!

I'm still in shock.

addictediam · 24/10/2011 17:17

Parsley I'm only 25 weeks so I will keep you company! And I think there is someone due after me...can't remember who tho!

Bearwolf (i think) how are you managing your cronic fatigue during pregnancy? I'm really struggling and beating myself up over things I just cant do atm. Can't wait till this baby is out and I can take drugs to help.

Brownwolf · 24/10/2011 17:45

Hi everyone, congrats to all you dynamic ones who have been getting on with decorating and getting stuff ready.

I seem to spend my time unnecissarily sorry bout spelling! worrying about how many babygrows and vests are enough.

Thanks for all the advice re the iron, I have got some floradix, only been taking a couple of days, but hope to feel a bit brighter soon

addicted /chronic fatigue has not been too bad thanks, I was managing quite well before I got pregnant and was worried that I would end up with a double whammy of tiredness from pregnancy and fatigue, but that hasn't happened, in fact felt really well in the second trimester, tho am struggling a bit now.

There is no good in beating yourself up, it will just use up your energy, just rest up as much as you can, and be kind to yourself.

Along with a few of you on here I had been having reduced and much fainter movements all across the weekend, I went in this morning to have it checked out and she was fine, It was strange tho, I could hear all these movements on the heartbeat monitor and couldn't feel a thing. Midwife said this is because she is breech and that is the most common position for them to be in at 29 weeks. Feeling very relieved but wiped out from the worry.

I am also getting impatient to meet my baby, I get really excited every time I see an actual baby! I can't wait to see who she looks like the most, but suppose I should just try and enjoy the last few weeks of freedom.

Opinions on names would be welcome, so far in top place are Zoe and Caitlin, I really really want Isobel but dp is not at all keen and not sure it is the right thing to talk him into something he doesn't want, what do you all think, have you got names planned, do you and your oh's agree? We are completely in agreement about a boy's name so if she suprises us and turns out to be a he then we won't have to worry!

ghosteditor · 24/10/2011 18:00

How funny brownwolf - Zoe and Isobel are on my (long) shortlist for girls too and I just posted elsewhere about names. DH and I don't have much overlap in acceptable names but I'm trying not to make it 'his' list or 'my' list iyswim.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 24/10/2011 18:28

Well, we're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of of Obs...

GP checked me out and sent us straight to the on call god at the JR. we're on the car on the way there now. Am trying to stay calm for now. Will report back later. Is probably all fuss over nothing, right? Wish GP hadn't advised to take over night bag though...

ghosteditor · 24/10/2011 18:32

Ooh well at least you'll get a thorough check cakes and hopefully some answers . Take care and keep us updated if you can, hope you get a chance to relax with your DH in the JR - I hung out there for 3 hours a few weeks ago, is pretty peaceful. Definitely worth getting checked out - will keep fx for you.

greenlady78 · 24/10/2011 18:50

makescakes also keeping fingers crossed for you and as ghost said it is good you will be properly checked!! Hugs!!

ParsleyLion1 · 24/10/2011 19:40

Hope all goes well cakes a thorough check up can never hurt.

Nanny01 · 24/10/2011 19:50

good luck makescakes

Oeisha · 24/10/2011 20:07

cakes fingers crossed for you too. Here's hoping LO's just being an awkward bugger.

moobee I hope all goes well tomorrow.

Got a GP apt today, a last minute one, literally, you have 30mins to get here Shock - no time for shower etc. Went in to discuss diets/IBS/what can I do to conrtol it. One urine check later (seems like it's a compulsory thing - she's pg, check her piss)...I'm back in Stepping Hill Hmm. And, no there's nothing wrong, again...and another 7h of my life gone because some medical person got "hysterical" and insisted I go. This time I did at least have proteins in my urine, which had gone when I got to SH. Whilst I love hearing Abi's heartbeat and her bashing the doppler, and I know it's sensible to keep checking these things as they arise, seriously, they're just putting me off reporting anything. I will, just beacause, but I'm so cross. At least they didn't give me the 'hysterical 1st timer' talk this time, as I made it very, very clear this really wasn't my idea...
...thinking of getting a tent and pitching it somewhere on hospital grounds...

So, again nursery prep hasn't happened, and I have a couple of bits of furniture arriving at the w/end and nowhere to put it now. Unlikely to get anything done between now and then.

Would love to stay in touch post-birthing either through here or FB....if you can all bear it...

redheadbedhead · 24/10/2011 20:14

good luck cakes

Brownwolf · 24/10/2011 20:41

cakes hope all is well, thinking of you.

oeisha glad everything is ok, but it really takes it out of you doesn't it, even when it turns out it is all fine. I am still in bed after my hospital trip earlier today, totally drained.

ghost yeah i am trying to only consider things we both like, but is hard when the name I like best is one he doesn't. But never mind maybe we will find something completely different that we both fall in love with.

abeautifulbutterfly · 24/10/2011 20:56

Makescakes hope all is well andd they throw you out again this eve...

Some of you really are being put through the mill, mentally and physically. I feel guiltily lucky (keeping fingers crossed)...

As for birthdays - my LO is due (14th) sometime between DH's birthday on 8th Jan and my god-daughter's on 23rd. But as both my others were born 8-9 days overdue, the god-daughter's b'day is looking more vulnerable to hijacking than DH's. I really fancy 12th, though (just for the look of it - 12012012 - wow!...). And one of my favourite numbers is 24 so wouldn't complain about 24th either (except I'll probably be going mental by that stage if I haven't given birth).

skeletonfishbonesandlilacs · 24/10/2011 21:00

good luck cakes hope your ok x

shonnomanom · 24/10/2011 21:14

Oh bloody hell parsley that could be me having baby this week! Oft!

oiesha what a bugged to have to go through all that again but glad your both ok

cakes Hope everything is ok x

Names - as a rule of thumb if one of us doesn't like a name then its straight off the board. But we need to have a good reason not to like it.
I think zoe is nice.
What does everyone think of Charlie for boy or girl??

addictediam · 24/10/2011 21:18

Cakes thinking of you, at least its getting checked out thouroughly

ghosteditor · 24/10/2011 21:20

I'm a big fan of Charlie (boy or girl) (and Lottie too) but it's a close family name for me, sadly.

Moobee · 24/10/2011 21:30

I hope everything's ok cakes.
