I think "Jan 2012 hands off the bump if you want to keep them"

Or something about gaviscon seeing as it seems to be sustaining us right now.

Jan 2012 gaviscon guzzlers, welcome bump gropers not!

I like the 'hands off' one - maybe the password to be allowed to post on the new thread should be 'gaviscon' instead!

ghosteditor · 03/11/2011 12:28

I'm determined to fill up this thread today!

So, DH and I have been total slackers about buying things for the baby so far (mostly because we've been in different countries for loads of the last 10 weeks). We have (or have plans for) a bednest, a cot, a moses basket, a pram, two slings, and a nursing chair. We have a few blankets and a few sleepsuits/outfits as presents from family, but no real clothes or anything yet.

Next week we are going to Kiddicare to have a massive splurge on essentials with the money we've been saving since I fell pregnant. Tell me, o wise ladies of the thread, what I should put on my shopping list - especially things you might not think of as a first timer or stuff that might not be in the books! Thanks in advance for saving me from wandering around an enormous baby-based department store with a dazed and distressed look on my face!

addictediam · 03/11/2011 12:57

A lot of it depends on the type of baby you have for example dd loved her bouncy chair and hates sleeping bags. Changing mats are a must have, the more the better! I had a travel fold up mat in my bedside cabnet along with a basket of nappies, wetwipes bags etc) so I could change a Nappy in the middle of the night easier. I also have a mat in dds. bedroom and one under the sofa, its just so much easier to have all the things you need to hand no matter where you are in the house! Don't underestimate how many muslin cloths and bibs you will get through.
A nappy bin is a 'nice to have' but will still smell even if they claim it wont. We have a nappy bin in dds bedroom, but dont use it anymore as refils can be expensive and Nappy bags are cheeper (dont put nappies in the kitchen bin tho, they must go outside or you'll start to wonder why no one wants to visit!)
A baby gym or play mat is a good buy, so you dont have to Hoover every second of every day buy are able to put baby on the floor.
Ummm...

addictediam · 03/11/2011 13:04

I am waiting to buy clothes (and did with dd) because 1) they may have got sex wrong 2) you don't know how much baby is going to weigh.

I took 1 baby gro and 1 vest and sent dh out to sainsburys to buy a pack of vests and baby gros (after prepareing him by taking him there a few weeks before and explaining sizes etc to him!) Then went shopping when dd was a couple of weeks old (very generous friends and family ment it wasn't desperate!)

fishandlilacs · 03/11/2011 13:09

Don't be bamboozled by baby essentials like a "top and tail bowl" you simply don't need one.

have plenty of cot bed sheets. I always used to kake up dd's cot with 2 bottom sheets so if she messed, leaked or puked I could just rip the top one off to a clean one underneath.

i second the need for mussies-get lots-you will use them for everything.

it's worth having a spare changing mat and essentials in the car in case your forget your changing bag or it gets nicked off the back of your pushchair (happened to a friend of mine)

GiraffeAHolic · 03/11/2011 13:10

I'm only buying a few basics clothes wise due to being team yellow. So far I have 2 long sleeved bodies, 3 short sleeved bodies and 1 sleepsuit and bib set in newborn.

I'm planning to utilise the january sales fit gender specific clothes once baby is here.

GiraffeAHolic · 03/11/2011 13:12

Oh and agree about spare changing bag and changing mat in car, packed with a spare outfit, nappies, wipes and muslins. Just don't forget to refill occasionally!

addictediam · 03/11/2011 13:15

Yes top and tail bowl is pointless, it is however a good storage place for dds shampoo, baby bath, sponge and bath toys Grin

Baby nail clippers are also a good buy, much nicer than big ones and more difficult to snip off finger ends (although not impossible Blush)

I want to go shopping!
I'm getting a real nesting urge now!

addictediam · 03/11/2011 13:21

Can I ask a quick question?
I've spoken briefly on here about the pre natal depression I had with dd, well part of that was being desperate to have her out of me. Well this time i think I'm ok but I'm desperate to get this baby out, but because I'm excited about meeting her, thats normal isn't it?

I know it seem like a really silly question but it was so bad last time I don't want to go there again and just want to make sure this isnt the start of something more serios iykwim

addictediam · 03/11/2011 13:25

Sorry I should say I wanted dd out of me by any means possible, wheather that was alive or not coming home with me or Joe bloggs over the street, i really didnt want her.

So this feeling is normal. Right?

ParsleyLion1 · 03/11/2011 13:57

I think that's normal addicted I can't wait to meet my baby either - I'm just concious she ought to cook a bit more before coming out :)

Fryn · 03/11/2011 14:21

addicted - yep, that sounds pretty normal! I'm late Jan, so hoping this one stays put a bit longer, but already looking forward to being able to bend over again. Oh, and to meeting him/her of course!

On the essentials front, definitely muslins (I used to wrap one round the mattress under DD's head, so if she puked I didn't need to change the sheet - although I rather like fish's 2 bottom sheet idea), definitely not a top and tail bowl (glad to see I wasn't the only one to get suckered into that!) I found the baby gym really handy as well, and bouncy chair.

To be honest, you really don't need much for a newborn - lots of baby gros and vests because it will be puke/poo fest, nappies, boobs/milk, love and that's about it! I'd be tempted to wait a bit before buying extras, so hopefully you'll get a better idea of what you really do/don't need.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/11/2011 14:27

addicted - oh yes, I am dying to meet my little man, to see what his personality is like. Can't wait! But also can, if that makes sense, because then it goes from being theoretical to being scarily real

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/11/2011 14:27

Oh - and w00p w00p - ghost and I are 30 weeks today!

GiraffeAHolic · 03/11/2011 14:34

See now that shows how everyone is different. I'm not bothering with a baby bath this time (going to get a support for the main bath) but I will be getting another top and tail bowl as I found it handy for morning washes when I didn't want to be in the bathroom.

GiraffeAHolic · 03/11/2011 14:35

8 more posts left on this thread by the way :)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/11/2011 14:37

We have no bath - so it's a baby bath or the sink! lol - who's going to start the new one then?

January 2012 - The one with the heartburn, kick counting and bump-groopers losing their hands...

:D

GiraffeAHolic · 03/11/2011 14:40

Do you reckon if we mention Gaviscon enough we'll all get freebies Grin

mrsamerican · 03/11/2011 15:08

fryn, giraffe and ghost - Luckily, my 11 lb hubby was breech, so they automatically did a CS back then. Still, I'm not entirely sure how my 5'2" and petite MIL made it to 39 weeks without tipping over.

ghosteditor · 03/11/2011 15:10

not me but I am going to make a pointless post so that someone has to take the plunge :P

[I had to google what a top and tail bowl was...]

shonnomanom · 03/11/2011 15:27

Ooooh nearly at the end of this one ladies!
Agree top & tails are not worth the money but i love the storage idea someone had.

Had my first solo on crutches shopping experience today. not fun. must look out a backpack.

So will we use
January 2012 - The one with the heartburn, kick counting and bump-gropers losing their hands...

I love being pregnant and having that connection with the baby, feeling it wriggle about in there. Last time I was quite relaxed about the whole thing and just treated Due Date like any other day. Although about day 40/5 I did start to blackmail the bump as I didnt want to be induced. It work as dd was born on 40/1. This time im really looking forward to being able to walk without feeling like my insides are about to fall out. Oh and swapping the crutches for a pram!!!
