Best of luck Jeely.

JeelyPiece · 02/04/2011 12:06

Thanks Muser. Drip's started and have had an epidural so things are moving along! Didn't think I would be mumsnetting during labour but it's amazing the opportunities I find to get on the Internet Smile

Larty74 · 02/04/2011 12:56

best wishes jeely!

am988 · 02/04/2011 16:01

All the best Jeely, I understand what you mean about lovely birth experiences... mine was as far as possible from what I wanted it to be - I was induced.. didn't completely worked - ended up with an EMCS with complications - but in the end, you know what, you will have your baby - and that is far more important than any plan. And no matter what, when you get your baby.. you don't care any more. take care,

Kagey · 02/04/2011 20:08

Congrats Lozario and hope all is going well Jeeley!

Elise is nearly a week old now and I can't believe time is flying so quick. I am managing to get out and about now better and can bear sitting in a car now. Night times are still awful and painkillers are still my best friend but hopefully not for too long.

haloflo · 02/04/2011 20:42

Seems there aren't too many of us left. Congrats to all the new annoucements.

4 days in I still feel i've been hit by a train. Birth didn't really go to plan as I ended up having to be induced as I wasn't contracting fast enough after 24 hours of my waters going (they were 5 mins apart & it felt like they were strong enough to me) but I am so happy my little girl is here safely. I will post more detail soon as still find it a little overwhelming.

jeely I had an epidural & synto. It worked well to get me through the first stage and I had my girl 5 and a half hours after they started me on it (although was 4-5 cm already) I still had the urge to push for the second too. Best of luck.

I actually have a better experience of stitches - they aren't too painful so far. Am able to go to the toilet without pain and can sit down fine. I am careful getting up and down but have found the experience less scary than the thought of them. Hope that reassures anyone still to pop.

Hannah is amazing so far although bf is tricky. Am determined to keep going though. Am nervous about the 5 day weigh in though as she hardly had anything for the first 2 days. Am hoping she is making up for it now. I never thought I would long for a dirty nappy quite so much! DP has been amazing and I love how close we are at the moment. I do not want him to go back to work.

Lozario · 02/04/2011 21:25

Hi everyone!

DS1 in bed upstairs and DD1 (!!!!) asleep on sofa so just came on to put up my very short birth story....

Started contractions on Thurs eve at 10pm-ish (DH told me that he wanted to finish his book first?!) and so I watched TV and then got in the bath to try and breathe through the contractions. They sped up quite quickly and I was having 3 in 10 mins so I said we should go to the hossie... got there at 2am and was very disappointed to only be 2cm. Sent home, things got more intense and I put up with it as long as possible, but by 4.30am there was NO let up in the pain, and the baby was still back to back so I had terrible back pain too. My mum was here as she was on hand for looking after DS1 whilst I was in hossie, so she was rubbing my back for me. I said to my mum and DH that I couldn't take it any more and NEEDED to go back to the hospital. As I stood up (from all fours on the sofa) I suddenly got the urge to push! They bundled me into the car, I was kicking DH's seat in front of me in an effort not to push, with DH yelling DON'T PUSH!!!!!!!!

By the time I got out of the car in the car park (luckily hossie only 10 mins away at 5am in the morning!), I had my hand between my legs because I was physically trying to keep the baby IN. In the lift up to labour ward (WHY is it on the top floor?!), I could feel the head... the lift doors opened and I yelled at some random bloke who turned out to be a hospital porter "HELP MEEEEE!", midwives came running, put me on a bed on all fours, told me the head was already out and I could just do what I needed to do. One push and she was out. SUCH a relief to be able to go with the pushing after fighting it for quarter of an hour! Waters went as she came out. Even the midwives were laughing about it as they handed over our notes as they changed shifts!

Lost a fair bit of blood so I couldn't go home until the evening but it was really nice to not have to stay overnight in hospital - I stayed in for 4 nights with DS1 and did not sleep at all. Last night only got a few hours sleep but still better than nothing! Breast-feeding going ok and I seem to be recovering well but OMG the after-pains are painful!! Apparently worse when it's 2nd or more baby too, which is a bummer! Getting better now though.

Jeely, hope all is going ok - you are a trooper! Hope to hear from you soon!

haloflo my DS1 barely ate at ALL for the first 48 hours of his life and I had all these people telling me HE MUST EAT EVERY THREE HOURS etc - he was jaundiced too and feeding him was meant to help him recover. I really worried about it but all was fine, so try not to worry, just keep offering her the boob and she'll get more into it. DS1 also had a long birth and I think long deliveries wear them out - he was OUT of it for the first week!!

Right am off to check in at the post-natal thread now but I am still here on this one too, thinking of you all who are still to go - I found that last couple of weeks of pregnancy AWFUL, much better out than in! L xxx

GeekLove · 02/04/2011 23:21

haloflo and lozario
also to any other first time mummies in week 1. Its perfectly normal for babies not to each much for the first 48hrs. They have a stomach capacity which is only ~1cm^3 and colostrum itsefl doesn't have much volume. DS2 only started getting really wet nappies at day 3 when the milk came in. Colustrum is full of fat, sugar and protein and has less water than an equivalent volume of milk.

edeluna · 03/04/2011 07:30

Haven't been around much in the past two weeks as I've been dealing with the after-effects of my baby's birth -- and looking after the LO, of course.

Not a happy birth story, I'm afraid:

Nothing really went as planned with the delivery, except that it ended with our gorgeous baby in our arms. My waters broke on Friday evening two weeks ago and I started contracting. Went to hospital a few hours later and the midwife (a man, btw. There were at least two male MWs at UCLH) did a speculum examination and told me my waters hadn't gone -- that I was just releasing "extra fluid" (I'd never heard of this before). My blood pressure was up a bit, so he took blood and sent it off to lab, and we waited several hours for the results. By the time the results came in (everything fine), it was time for a shift change and the new MW on duty did a physical check and said, yes, my waters had gone but I was only about 1cm dilated. She then proceeded to do a sweep without asking me. She also talked non-stop the entire time. Then I was sent home and instructed to return that evening to start induction if things didn't kick off on their own.

Spent all afternoon in the bathtub at home, returned to hospital and after 24 hours total was only 2cm. They started a drip and got me to about 4 or 5cm over the next several hours, but there was concern about my slow progress and a scan showed that the baby had turned back-to-back and stuck an arm over her head. Along with the potential complications of my fibroids, I ended up having a emcs (after about 6 tries to get the epidural in right; the anethetist said my back was very tight, so it was difficult to get the needle in).

Beautiful daughter was delivered shortly afterwards, healthy and gorgeous. But I couldn't even hold her immediately because my hands were so numb from all the meds. DH took her to recovery while I got stitched up and I was finally able to hold and start feeding about an hour after her arrival.

I was sent home two days later and had the stitches out on day 6. About two hours after the stitches were removed, I woke from a nap to find that the wound had reopened and I was soaked in mostly fluid and a little blood. We all got an ambulance ride to our local hospital (Barnet), but it was Saturday so the place was virtually closed down. I did see one very over-extended OB, but had to wait until Monday to see a tissue viability specialist to determine how best to handle the open wound. In the end, they've just kept it covered and it seems to be healing fine, but I was Barnet for four days and most of that time seemed to be spent waiting to see doctors and specialists. They were extremely understaffed and overworked. Not a good sign for what's to come in future with more budget cuts on the way.

I knew even before TTC that I might need a cs because of my fibroids, but everything had gone really well in my pg and the last scan at 36 weeks had suggested a vaginal delivery would be possible, so I had been looking forward to that. (Though I have to admit, once I was contracting, I wasn't enjoying it so much and the relief the epidural provided was sort of nice.)

The most important thing, I know, is that baby is fine. She's beautiful and we love her. And I'm doing much better now, too, and reckon I should be pretty much recovered within another week or so, but it was a very difficult experience.

I'm glad so many here have had the natural births they wanted (or whatever birth they wanted). I'm now just trying to focus on being a good mum.

Happy mother's day, btw!

JeelyPiece · 03/04/2011 07:48

Oh my god I can't believe I did it and we have a baby. Ended up as forceps due to back-to-back presentation, narrowly avoided section. Born at 3:45am today, day 5 of induction. Not eaten, slept or washed for two days. But gorgeous Alistair is sleeping next to me in hospital with his first tummy full of my milk!

Kagey · 03/04/2011 11:41

Yay! Congrats jeely sounds like you had a tough time :( but gorgeous babies make up for it and what a lovely mothers day present!

edeluna sorry to hear your horrid time too :(

1Catherine1 · 03/04/2011 12:34

Congratulations jeely and edeluna. I didn't get the perfect birth I wanted either but the important thing is that I did get the daughter I want!

Larty74 · 03/04/2011 14:19

Congrats jeely and edluna - what a great Mother's Day pressie! well done to both of you.

Lozario what a story!

Happy mothers day to all!

niamh29 · 03/04/2011 21:54

Happy mothers day all!

Amazing stories, glad all ok in the end though!

My stitches are acting up too, ended up at doctors and was told that some of the stitching has come undone and I'm on antibiotics as she suspected I might be starting an infection, pain not as bad now that I've been on them a couple of days, oh well!

am988 · 03/04/2011 22:35

Congratulations Jeely - and Edeluna - really feel for you I was induced too, which worked to get me started but after the pains had started at 1am - 22 hrs after I was still not even 3 cm dilated - that's when they decided it should be EMCS - but.. wasn't straight fwd either - it ended up being a 3hr op cause i was loosing blood and uterus wasn't contracting - i cuddled my lovely baby 3hrs after he was born. But now, nearly a month after it was all worth it - today I got the first real smile - best first mother's day gift i could ever get. take care all, xx A

spilttheteaagain · 04/04/2011 17:59
