Catherine, congratulations on finally starting ML. I don't know how you managed to last so long. I hope the cinema was good fun last night and you get a little time more to relax before baby arrives.

Great to hear about so many new arrivals. I hope all the mums and babies are doing well.

Anyone have any views or suggestions on black-out blinds? Someone I know insists they're a necessity. I've put one on our gift list but haven't really prioritized it. Should I? I was thinking I'd see how things go and then order one if it seems like the baby is having trouble. Thoughts?

nowpanic, sorry It's taken me ages to get back to you. Regarding the partial retained placenta, the smell was the first thing that made me think something was wrong. It smelt really rotten, kind of like really terrible bad breath, and was getting stronger. I was bleeding but not really heavily, kind of like a normal period. the blood seemed quite mucusy though, almost slimy. The biggest giveaway was when some of the placenta began to hang out of me, though Ideally it would have been caught before this stage. I showed my community midwife and she assured me it was my vagina having been stretched, sagging down outside my body and to do lots of pelvic floors and see my doctor about it in 6 weeks.
Thankfully I ignored her and got myself to the doctors the next day. She couldn't believe the midwifes diagnosis and she said it was clearly obvious that it was something coming out of me. Needless to say I have asked for my midwife to be changed, I would hope learning the difference between vagina tissue and rotting placenta should be in one of the early lessons.

Sorry went on a bit long, I think it is normal to bleed for a while. Have a look at your birth notes as mine listed the Placenta as appearing complete, but with ragged edges, suggesting some might be still in there.

If your bleeding is really heavy and you really notice the smell as overtly rank then speak to your midwife of doctor about it.

Still having ups and downs with feeding, sometimes I think I've turned a corner, then at the next feed we are back to square one. I hope everyone else if getting on better with it.

Still waiting here... now 6 days overdue. Am trying to just envisage that baby will come on Thursday (possible induction date) as then anytime before will be a bonus.

Am off to my mums today and my dad had a mild panic attack about me being away from home.... they live in East London and I live in North London!!!!

I'm setting off to see the family and inlaws today - just 130miles from my midwife. I can't think of a better incentive for baby to come but would really like them to wait 7-10days as I would like to enjoy some maternity leave and have a few things to do round the house first. Do you think they will oblige? I am too impatient to wait til my due date!

Fingers crossed for you Petty and Gemma! I have just been to pregnancy yoga, I hope it's my last week there. I've come back and DH has taken my DD out so do I (a) tidy the house (b) get some lunch (c) get in the bath (d) go back to bed??? Hmm...

I've seen on another thread Pushmepullyou had a baby boy on 8th March.

I am now 3 days overdue, have had my second sweep and another booked for Monday morning.
Fed up well and truly now.
Will try mixedmammas method and resign myself to having waters broken next friday, then if baby arrives before then it will be a bonus.

Hope we have some more announcements this weekend. (Even though I will be )

Cinema was lovely last night. We both enjoyed ourselves and LO did plenty of kicking when the title screen came on. Strange question ladies but can you actually feel your placenta? Last night I had my hand on my belly and at first thought baby was kicking but then I noticed the thud on my belly was rhythmic and the part I was touching was really really hard. Now I was told that hard meant bum or head and since she was head down and 1/5 engaged at last MW appointment I assumed that it couldn't be head all the way at the top of my bump but she can hardly be kicking me from her bum... So I decided (with my marvellous GCSE biology knowledge ) that it must be the placenta I was feeling hence why it seemed to have a beat. Then I wondered if baby was moving much at all

Hope we're all having a lovely weekend and I look forward to more announcements! Glad you ignored your MW bluebeach and I'm sure you and LO will be making progress soon. Actually worried I won't really get the hang of it myself - don't expect much family support as my mum didn't BF and I had to lecture my sister only the other week over comments against BF as she was "grossed out" by it, she has since rethought her position on it though and told me today that she looked at it differently after our chat. My OH though will be supportive at least.

Finally, happy due date to Medee and Highlandbird :) Gope you have your babies soon!!

I know this sounds a bit durhhhh but once you are 40wks+ can you request a sweep? If so could my GP do it (midwives are at surgery on Friday) or would I have to go into hospital? If that is the latter then once its done I I tend to go home since i have a homebirth booked.

yes you can request a sweep from 40 weeks geeklove however I would advise asking a mw rather than GP to do it, as mws do them all the time therefore more likely to be successful.

catherine well done for fixing the list, and I am so glad that you have finally started your maternity leave! I finished work at 38 weeks and everyone kept telling me I was cutting it fine... on the other hand, 3 weeks later I'm still here waiting!

geeklove I don't know if it's the same everywhere but I was offered a sweep at the 40 week midwife appointment - in my case I was 40+4 as that was the next date they had an appt after I was 40 weeks. So yes you should be offered a sweep. As for who does it and where, I think it would depend if your particular midwife has been trained to do them or not. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be your GP though! It would either be your community midwife (at the GP surgery) or it might be at the maternity unit at hospital. Mine was done by my midwife at the surgery during my appt.

I'm now 8 days overdue and still waiting! No signs of anything happening at all!

geek my MW did one at my request on Thursday just gone when I was 38+3. She had said to me some weeks earlier that they will offer at 40 weeks for first timers and 41 for others but that acc to NICE guidelines you are able to request one from 38 weeks. I tried to look it up but guidelines 450 pages long and couldn't be bothered to wade through tbh and took her word for it. She also agreed on the basis that lost mucous plug at 34+4 (had steroids) and have been having cramping and other early labour symptoms since and am thoroughly fed up. DS was also induced at bang on 38W and arrived v quickly (had Pre-eclampsia with him) so all in all she was happy to honour the request. Not sure if things differ by region though or even by individual midwife?????

Anyway apparently cervix was favourable, soft and anterior but not dilated, baby head was two fifths engaged and mw could feel it which was weird. Have had yet more cramps since and today quite a lot of brown snot like discharge (sorry tmi) so now wondering if things might be moving in right direction. After 4 weeks of bad cramps I am more than ready.

Catherine I feel his bottom and it's really hard. (It's at the front of my uterus/stomach on the left hand side) I sometimes get a rhythmic thudding and it's the baby having hiccups! Was odd to start with and now I recognise it is often after me having my raspberry leaf tea or eating kiwi fruit (which I am eating LOADS of!) Do you think that's what yours could be?

KPidgeon You are so knowledgeable! Thanks - that makes sense, although my LO is naughtily lying on my right side and refuses to move to the left, my mw tells me this every appointment in disapproval but she's happy there. I have no idea what difference it makes and I'm afraid to ask

Evening all, just a quick post before we go OUT too!!!! DH and I are going for a meal together locally, his sister is coming to babysit DS1 who is in bed, currently going "taking TURNS, taking TURNS" because it's what he had to do at the park today when his dad took him to the swings to give me some down time!! His vocab is coming on so quickly now it's scary. (DS1's, I mean - DH has been talking very well since I met him...!) So I expect this will be our last "date" out before the baby comes now. Going for a Thai meal, can't wait! :)

Catherine I gather the babies are better off on the left side as it means they are more likely to get into an anterior position for birth - ie, they are stomach to (your) back, rather than (their) back to (your) back. I know a fair bit about this as DS1 was delivered back to back (I think they call posterior delivery?) and this one was looking like settling that way too, so I've been given exercises to do to encourage it to settle in a better position, eg lots of walking (urgh), crawling on all 4s for 15-20mins a day (!!) and generally leaning forward or sitting so that your back is straight and your knees are below your hips. Basically, VERY annoyingly, the worst thing you can do for a back to back baby is lean back and put your feet up - which is all I want to do at the moment, especially as my foot is still swollen!!

sweeps - I'm getting one on my 40 week appt from my midwife the week after next, but she claims she's rubbish at them (?!) so I've also booked a couple of acupuncture sessions for that week too.

I am having another bad day today and I'm frankly getting sick of it, was having nerve pain in my arm and shoulder yesterday and last night it moved to my right thigh, it's ok as long as I am sitting still but if I move about too much it gets really sore (not great when you have 2 kids already) so have not been able to do much today and I'm also feeling really sick and I'm struggling to eat anything (and at my last apt I had lost 2kg so really should be trying to eat a bit more). My poor DH has had to
do loads cause I'm useless and I'm just sitting here feeling guilty.

Hi all, just to let you know that I had a little girl on Monday, Charlotte Louise weighing 6lb 2! Was such a shock having a little girl as I was convinced was having another boy. The other shock was how quickly she arrived after getting to the deliver suite. We arrived at 04:00 and out she popped at 04:16. Good job I pushed for the midwife to let me come in when I rang as in the car on the way to the hospital I wanted to push. The look on my husbands face was priceless!!

All well now but got discharged Weds lunchtime only to end up being readmitted Weds evening and only came out today! Charlotte was having problems feeding and went really lethargic. As there was no time for me to have the antibiotics for Group B Strep they wanted to give her antibiotics to be on the safe side. All clear though and bought her home today to a very excited big brother.

Here, I'm looking at due date tomorrow with DD having awful high fever since 3 days, crying and off her food :( and GP insisting is just another "viral". She has 40c as i type this, just had nurofen.

On Thursday had been having nice regular cxn and getting hopeful... Then stress over DD made it all stop I guess. Seeing her suffering sent my BP up and so panicky and nauseous I've hardly eaten last few days. Went into hosp for BP series and doc did a VE said cervix was favourable, 1cm, could feel baby's head. Was v v insistent on wanting to do a sweep right then. But I couldnt, thinking of DD, not feeling ready.

Since then, her fevers not much better, I've been in bed, on the TENS occasionally, trying to keep out of DH's way since I can't do much for DD. Lost mucus plug today, streaked brown. But all excitement re birth has turned to ash. Can only hope DD better by the time I have to go to hosp. Can't believe I'm trying to hold on and wait Please please let her be better tomorrow, as it's induction Monday morning for me.

Made me feel lots better! even bought my first maxi dress for the summer.

I still havent had any BH or lost plug or anything remotely like a baby coming anytime soon.

Im happy reading all of you seeming to get out for meals and cinemas. we all deserve it ha!
