Oh forgot to say it was on Radio 5 breakfast and then they tweeted about it all over twitter (with midwives up in arms saying it was a load of tosh!)

soontobefatnat · 16/08/2010 11:23

Oh, okay - not at all surprised to discover it had Nicky Campbell stirring up shit about old news... zzzz. My DH listens to that breakfast show and it drives me crazy! Happy to ignore. Try not to get too wound up about it - our midwives would tell us if we weren't good candidates for a homebirth. We're in good hands!

soontobefatnat · 16/08/2010 11:29

Vix - did you see this? www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/aug/16/homebirths-midwives-hospital-baby Sounds like a real barney between trad male medicine and the Royal College of Midwives brewing...

ElusiveMoose · 16/08/2010 11:57

Congrats on all the new babies!! Looking forward to hearing all the details later Smile.

A word of warning, by the way - if and when this baby finally does come out, I'm unlikely to be as good at keeping you all updated as all the other diligent ladies have been. Not yet joined the iphone generation, I'm afraid.

Re that study, sounds like a load of crap to me. And I HATE Nicky Campbell, which makes me think it's even more likely to be crap.

Happy day here today. After a frustrating week without a single builder last week, I now have seven here at the same time Grin. Slightly chaotic, but at least we should make some serious progress over the next couple of days Smile.

pamplem0usse · 16/08/2010 12:44

Ladies.... there's an interesting commentary on the study in the guardian today (sorry too rushed to link) by the head of the National College of Midwives who says the study is irrelevant / mysogenist (sp!). My DH brought it up with our midwife out of interest (we're not allowed one) and she said that the criteria for home births are so narrow that any talk of an increased risk is rubbish.
I'm also a Nicky Campbell / five live hater. I'm sure they think 1. Pick a piece of relatively recent news 2. Report it from a completely biased perspective 3. get a load of idiots with heightened emotion due to alcohol consumption / unemployment / lack of brain cells to comment on it.

pamplem0usse · 16/08/2010 12:47

Oh and if they read the Daily Mail all the better...

vix206 · 16/08/2010 12:54

Its funny, it was the first time I had ever listened to 5 Live in the morning, I just happened to be up and there was nothing else on! Anyway, yes all a load of old rubbish so not at all worried now.

Just hope baby comes soon, I am so fed up of all this waiting around! :)

LizzieA · 16/08/2010 13:28

Congratulations Nikalah, coffee and anna, we had no babies for ages and then three come along at once!

I have one request ladies and that is that you are all a little more respectful of the queue, we are British after all. I WANT MY BABY!!! Wink

chickieno1 · 16/08/2010 14:16

Congrats to nikalah and anna and good luck to coffee! So jealous.

I'm afraid I'm going to try and jump the queue........ I have a week left to go but I want to meet my baby on friday :)! I'm not english so I should be allowed to skip :)
Think DH was scared to tell me he only has 1 week off and it starts on monday :( if babba s late then he s going to try and get few hours off unofficially where he can!!!!!

Alicetheinvisible · 16/08/2010 14:32

Afternoon ladies Smile

Congratulations to Nikalah, Coffee and Anna Smile

Pre-op appointment went well. I had the same MW all morning, going through everything i need to know, having a feel of baby, then took me for 30mins monitoring, was also going to do my bloods as short in blood dep but didn't need to in the end. Feel really positive about the cs now, much more than i have felt about a vbac at any point tbh, as i was always a bit nervous about it! Cs will be on thursday morning (lets just hope i get that far now!) i will have skin to skin contact in theatre, and supposing all is well, i can go home in 24hrs. It seems very civilised!

vitapulchra · 16/08/2010 16:26

Congratulations to Anna, Nikalah and does anyone who reads fb know if Coffee has indeed had her LO? I wasn't sure if we were congratulating her on her waters breaking of their own volition or if she's actually popped. Hopefully the latter!

Ahh, an updated list for the little girls who've just come into your lives . . .

Congrats Nikalah!

After my tumble down the stairs last night, I tried to get to the GP today but it was bunged so I phoned hospital and they told me to come in just to be on the safe side. MW listened to baby's heartbeat and was happy enough but decided to put a trace on just to be on the safe side so spent half an hour lying there, nervously watching the graph. MW was brill, she explained what all the different lines meant and it was crazy to see it picking up all these fairly strong BH contractions (3 in about 20 minds) that registered quite high but I couldn't even feel Hmm

In the end, I had a registrar come in and do a scan, baby's head is low and engaged, heartbeat strong, fluid levels fine. I'm bumped and bruised to bits, but supposedly if I keep my feet up and do some gentle exercising with birth ball everything should be a-ok. MWs were fab as usual, I got really faint when they first put trace on and ended up throwing up 3 times Blush but they just brought me tissues and a fan and a basin and were really kind. V glad I picked that hospital!!

Glad your pre-op appt went well, Alice

chickie - sorry your DH's work are making him take just one week off and making it start on Monday rather from the day your LO is born. My DH is a teacher so I can sympathise - sooner our LO gets here, the more time he can have at home, even working from home or taking the occasional half day, before the kids all start back!

nat - I'm only 38 weeks + 2 and I'm feeling fed up too!! Can't believe might have up to 23 days to go, 13 days til due date and 10 days before induction. Agh!!!

vitapulchra · 16/08/2010 17:29

//Warning// Looong post of no interest whatsoever unless you suffer from thrush!

Chulita--Awhile after the birth of DD I suffered from severe and chronic thrush infections. I?ve had them mildly for over a decade but some months after her birth I was floored. I was able to bf for awhile when it wasn?t so bad, but then came down with a kidney infection, stayed in hospital and that was the end of bf. I then sought the help of my dr, and a nutritionist as well as reading everything I could on the subject. I used fluconazole as well as a super-strength probiotic (for 1 week), and a supplement of caprylic acid which has been shown to help fight it internally. I also cut out yeast, fermented foods, sugar and dairy (except plain yoghurt and cottage cheese). It helped TREMENDOUSLY?my infection cleared up quickly. The only reason I fell off the bandwagon after 6 weeks is that I lost too much weight. I should?ve gone back to the dr and nutritionist to sort that part out but I felt so much better that I didn?t bother and went back to my regular diet (and recurring thrush infections).

If you read any books about fighting thrush with diet, take any advice with a very large grain of salt?they tend to be extreme. And yet no conventional dr believes that thrush is in any way related to diet or lifestyle, which is pure ignorance. This is what I?d recommend:

  1. Take an excellent, high-strength probiotic religiously until you are completely clear of infection. Antibiotics make thrush worse!
  2. Eat: bread wraps, wholegrain pasta, couscous, quinoa, rice, crispbreads and crackers; meat, eggs and fish; every veg and fruit; plain live yoghurt w/o added sugar and cottage cheese; lots of beans and legumes. My cooked meals were lots of curries, stews, casseroles etc that I could share with the whole family. I snacked on fruit, nuts and tons of nut butters and cottage cheese on oatcakes, homemade cornbread and leftovers.

The topical infection I don?t have any advice for, as mine was mild and went away after a few weeks. Sounds like you?re doing everything humanly possible already to deal with it. I?m so sorry you?re suffering so much.

Also, my DS1 was a baby who never slept. He rarely napped in the day for more than 30 minutes until he was 18 months old, and he was 5-6 months old before he could settle himself in bed at night for any length of time. Fortunately he was my 1st so I could devote the time to him, but it was gruelling. I used a baby bjorn a lot just so I could have my hands free to do other things while he slept. And one other thing?though I?m sure I?ll now make myself a real pariah on this thread (or the whole of MN!)?I finally let him sleep on his tummy. And my other two DCs after him, too. And they all slept much, much better. My HV of course disapproved and even wrote in his health record something to the effect of ?if he dies of cotdeath, we?ll know it?s the mother?s fault.?

I figured that a) my mother and virtually all other women of her generation were advised to lay their babies this way and b)it?s not a proven connection between cotdeath and tummy sleeping, it?s an hypothesized link. Also, I only did this once my babies were strong enough to easily turn their heads from side to side when on their tummies. It prevented them from startling and they all loved it. I also used a supersoft blanket tucked well around the mattress (not when newborn), and as they grew older they all dove into their blankets like going to bed was heavenly.

This may very well not be helpful at all, but since you know Samson does not physically need to feed every 1-2 hours and that his lack of sleep is seriously disrupting your own health and general family life, keep trying different tactics to help him learn to sleep. He WILL do it, just hopefully sooner rather than later. (And now I?m going to cower in the corner before getting called Worst Mother in Britain.) hth. And sorry for the long post.

Alice so glad your appt went well. Just wanted to say, that having known a few people in RL who had a planned section, they also said it was a really pleasant experience and easy to recover from (esp when compared to an EMCS - not sure which type you had last time).

nat just idly wondering, what are you going to change your MN name to once you have your LO Grin?

thedogwalker · 16/08/2010 17:50

Alice glad your appt went well.

littlemiss Glad you are okay after your fall.

I had my first hospital check up having gone overdue. Doc looked at LO on the scan and said "He's not moving anytime soon." So now feeling very deflated Sad

Next appt on wednesday. Going every 2 days s going to get on my nerves but it's the way they do it over here.

Wishng everyone positive vibes since I seem to be stuck in limbo might aswell hurry those on behind me.

Take care xx

Chulita · 16/08/2010 18:56

vita thank you so much for taking the time to write all that down. It's good to know what worked! It's day one of the diet thing and I already cheated. I made soda bread to avoid yeast and still have bread but that's made with milk... Being a girl who lives on cheese, toast and biscuits this is going to be a real test of willpower. Still, it only has to last til I've shifted it then I can finish off that box of Lindor :)
As for sleep, he'll sleep on me put as soon as I put him down he wakes up and screams...it's just a phase, it's just a phase (I just hate leaving DD out in the cold)

dogwalker anything could happen, just cos your LO looks comfy doesn't mean he won't pop out tonight.

Congrats coffeelady!

bouncingblueberries · 16/08/2010 19:49

congrats to nikalah, coffeelady, and anna

big thanks from me too vita for all that info. I went back to the dr today for some oral fluconazole. Feeding was just too painful Sad

After a quick chat with my friend that's training to be a bf counsellor, I also realised we'd picked up some really bad habits. I'd just been stuffing my nipple in, any which way, knowing that I'd soon be in pain anyway. I'd also been getting excrutiating vasospasms between feeds, where my nipples would turn white. Chatting with my friend to find out why this was happening, I noticed that my nipples looked like a lipstick after each feed - so that just confirmed the poor latch. So I've been googling latch and positioning like a mad woman. So that's my homework tonight - work on latch!!

I was convinced our latch was fine, but looking at videos online, it sooooo isn't!

weehector any progress?

Chulita · 16/08/2010 20:20

blueberries I have the same, vasospasms...had them with DD too :( Aren't they just such a pile of crap? Soooo painful and you can't touch them - part of me wants to wander topless cos clothes hurt so much but the other part knows how painful it gets if nipples get cold :( I'm trying the diet (although DH said he'd join me and has spent all evening wandering around offering me chocolate!), still on the Daktarin and I'm debating going back for more Fluconazole. Part of me wonders if fixing the latch would solve it so I'm holding off as long as I can and since Saturday night have been really focussing on making sure Sam's latched on as well as he can, and popping him off if he isn't. I'm going to get it checked at the bf group tomorrow if anyone can, just cos I think it's right doesn't mean it is!

Congrats to everyone who has also had a baby !

Congratulations to nikalah coffeelady and anna Smile

Such lovely names!

Just a quick update to say that i think i may be in the early stages of labour! I've had a few small shows over the last few days but this evening i have had a much bigger one accompanied by a very bad back and a lot of pressure down below. I really hope this is it - fingers crossed!

Sending lots of softening vibes to anyone else due or over due! Smile
