Kai is a fairly popular name round these parts, Wayne as a middle name is fine, it doesn't really flow IMO but I doubt Colleen will be yelling "Kai Wayne" down the aisles of Waitrose.

Fortunately I doubt they give a damn what anyone else thinks and I really don't think Kai will care that some people think his name is chavvy when he's helping to spend his parent's millions on whatever it is millionaire little boys spend their pocket money on.

To 5inthehousesofparliament

Just want to say that I like Jamie (and Jools) Oliver and, to my knowledge, they didn't sell baby photos but were happy to be photographed leaving hospital (by the front door) so "the masses" (those interested) could see their baby. I thought that was quite sweet TBH. Not sure if they've had their third yet (I live abroad now and could be v.v.v.behind the times here.....) and if something else happened with that one. But for the first two girls, they didn't sell photos and let themselves be photographed - nice I thought and not typically celeb-like at all

As for Wayne and Coleen R.........agree "chav" etc is a bit rude (in general, not to them specifically!) but I must say, in the same breath, do we really believe them to be hard-working?! I think you can go too far defending them (in a desperate inverse snobbery kinda way) and credit them with something they do not possess........hard working?!! He's a footballer and she, well, she shops and has made a career from being a little bit famous which has enabled her to get a TV show as the UK masses latch on to anything celeb-driven! How is that?! Yes, she seems a nice enough girl who is still fairly down-to-earth and family orientated but, before you defend her AMAZING ability to stay so down-to-earth with that much money, remember her ridiculously priced wedding dress?!? NB: they did sell the wedding photos remember......

As for Kai Wayne - give a f*?! Not really.......

5inthehousesofparliament · 04/11/2009 16:03

GM, I didn't mean that they were selling photos, they were actually the first couple that came to mind. I was just saying that they didn't stop on their way out of hospital to be photographed by everyone and show the baby off. They had a third girl a while ago, called her Petal Blossom or something like that.

MrsWeasley · 04/11/2009 16:29

I think that when you name a baby you do think about people you know with the same name and that does influence your liking or dislike of a name.

On those grounds I would not name my child Kai.

But as for the new Rooney baby well it could have been a lot worse. So it they like it then thats fine. After all they will be the ones using it most often. I'm sure they wouldnt like my name choices but hey ho I wouldnt want a world of children all called the same.

I have to say I am not really bothered by what people call their children esp "celebs"

Vinomum · 04/11/2009 20:08

I personally don't like the names Kai or Wayne, but I think it's lovely to name your children after people in your family (that's what we did and I don't care if people like the names or not frankly).

I don't really have an opinion either way on the parents, but I do think:

  1. Coleen didn't consider herself too important to push a baby out in an NHS hospital like the rest of us commoners - good for her.
  2. They could have chosen hideous names eg Biscuit Delilah.
  3. They haven't flogged their baby photos to the press which I think is the height of self importance and tackiness.

They've only been parents for a few hours but seem to be doing a pretty good job so far IMO!

whethergirl · 04/11/2009 20:27

Well I call my son Ky (shortened from Kylan) and it's a beautiful name and quite offended by some of the rude comments on here.

Having said that, I find traditional names very unattractive so we're all entitled to our opinion.

edam · 04/11/2009 20:37

v. good point about them not choosing an NHS hospital, good for Coleen!

alysonpeaches · 04/11/2009 20:58

Im not keen, but if thats what they want leave em to it!!! Lets face it, a name like that speaks volumes doesnt it?

walkingonthemoon · 04/11/2009 21:39

Alysonpeaches: what do you mean by "a name like that speaks volumes"?

sial72 · 04/11/2009 21:50

My 8 month old baby is called Kai and I'm absolutely mortified that Wayne Rooney has named his son Kai as by next year there will be millions of Kai's.

busybutterfly · 04/11/2009 22:07

Not much goes with Wayne though does it?!

busybutterfly · 04/11/2009 22:09

And I can't believe they haven't realised that if you change around his initials you get WKR...not good those, eh?

themerrywidow · 04/11/2009 22:11

I wouldn't have chosen it but babies have a way of growing into their names. I have taught some hideously named children and whilst it's true that the more 'unusual' names are often owned by difficult or disadvantaged children I have known some delightful Sprockets and Dishcloths (names have been changed)

edam · 04/11/2009 22:20

does anyone know how they pronounce it? With an 'a' sound or an 'i' sound?

katnkittens · 04/11/2009 22:38

Awww I actually feel a bit sad for Colleen, she's going to be full of 'babymoon' happiness and I really hope she doesn't read a barrage of mean comments about her choice of name in the papers or on the net.... I don't mean the 'it's not for me' comments but the more personal comments.

I know this forum is for discussing names and she is in the public eye but it just seems a bit.. mean?

I think they seem like a lovely couple, she seems really sweet and as others have said, it's hardly 'Apple' or 'Princess Tiaamii' is it?

scottishmummy · 04/11/2009 22:43

i imagine the paid pr will deflect and avoid negative comments

tjtheminx · 05/11/2009 02:29

I don't think I would personally have chosen either but I think it could have been a lot lot worse.
FWIW I never much liked the name, but there's a georgeous 4 year old boy who lives down our street who is called Kai.
Turns out his full name is Malachai - in honour of his dad's Irish and his mum's Jewish Heritage.
And I think that's plain fab.

Also acknowledge Vinomum's point re Colleen having KW on the NHS.
I wish them all the best.

Eve4Walle · 05/11/2009 07:07

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I always think that if someone has the money to have their baby in a private hospital, then they should. Yes, I know the Rooneys have paid their taxes etc, but the NHS struggles to prvide decent maternity care and lets face it, they could have afforded it couldn't they?

Kirstie Alsopp had her babies on the NHS too and her husband is a stinking rich city boy. It's just makes me feel a bit angry for some reason.

As for the name, I don't like it much, but each to their own.

Eve4Walle · 05/11/2009 07:11

As an aside, it's better than Ajax anyway! (Yes, I've been reading the Jack Dee book).

edam · 05/11/2009 11:13

I see it the other way round, Eve - that Kirstie and Coleen (does she spell it with one l?) don't think they are too good for the NHS. Or alternatively have done their research and are jolly sensible about the risks of using private maternity care... (can think of one celeb-friendly hospital that has had a couple of nasty deaths thanks to poor care plus if you are unfortunate enough to need SCBU, you'll have to be transferred to the NHS).

BoffMonster · 05/11/2009 12:02

But will he have a Green Knight?

kissyfur · 05/11/2009 14:06

I'm with PuppyMonkey.. not good

edam · 05/11/2009 14:29

BoF, is that The Once And Future King, or the computer game that apparently Wayne got the name from?

voulezvou · 05/11/2009 15:27

Chavtastic, so perfect then!

bringonthesummer · 05/11/2009 15:56

Shocked how judgemental people have been on this thread. Congratulations to wayne and Coleen !( and it is great to see a celeb couple using a nhs hospital and a natural birth ! In my opinion the NHS is for everyone !!!)
