Isn't it funny how one letter can change a name?

Harry/Barry

Wayne/Shane.

I like the name Shane. I may be on my own there, not sure, but I suspect the MN jury would reject it. I don't care. It's a friendly, kind person's name.

hulabula · 03/11/2009 14:06

This whole thread is becoming quite ridiculous!

We are arguing about whether its 'working class' to name one's son after his father....???

And whether we like Shane more than Wayne (I hate either, but who cares)???

I think we all have too much time to waste on mumsnet (including me )!!!

pitta · 03/11/2009 14:16

Kai's not terrible. Wayne on the other hand..

belgo · 03/11/2009 14:24

I'm surprised at such negetive responses. Kai is fine, nothing wrong with it, not really to my taste but certainly not chavvy.
And the second name is Wayne after his father, nothing surprising about that.

MaggieMonday · 03/11/2009 14:29

yeah, 6 pages and it's not that bad really!

MrsVik · 03/11/2009 14:57

I'm in the 'it's not too bad' camp.

It's not a cruel name, or a really stupid one - it's fine. I quite like Kai, and Wayne isn't to my taste, but it's a nice tradition that they are following.

Good luck to the new parents!

mellifluouscauliflower · 03/11/2009 15:02

Although I probably won't be calling my child Kai, that's what they like and they are being true to themselves, so good luck to them! Wouldn't you have been just a tiny bit disappointed if it had been Harry or Edward or Thomas?

VinegarTitsOnFire · 03/11/2009 15:04

What makes you say C&W are working class Kat?

diddl · 03/11/2009 15:14

If it had been Harry, Edward or Thomas, it would have been "that´s a good name ruined",or "who are they trying to be".

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 03/11/2009 15:35

Kai is a bit 'modern' for my personal taste as I'm more of a traditionalist, but it's perfectly pleasant. I associate it with a sun blecahed surf dude type or extreme sport enthusiast. rather nice acrually.

And Wayne as a middle name is very admirable imo. I am sure it has not esacped Mr and Mrs Rooney's attention that Wayne is currently regarded as a lampoonable much derided name, but they've put fashion aside and are preapered to endure all the snidey comments they undoubtedly know it will create, and gone with the family tradition of honouring his dad, and his dad before him.

I have no time for all those 'does this middle name 'go'?' threads, it doesn't frigging matter, they will only ever be siad together twice in thier life, much better imo to choose a name that has relevance for a middle name. Would also stop all the blardy blar Mays and blardy blar Rose and Blardy Bar James 'filler' type names, cos they 'go' with everything.

Well done and Congratualtions to Mr and Mrs Rooney. ( I think she has soemthing about her that Mrs Rooney.)

Emprexia · 03/11/2009 15:49

its the comment on the first page that says calling a child after yourself is 'egotistical'

Eeerr.. i guess half the population of dads out there are then because using dads name as a surname is very, very common.

My DS has two middle names, my DH's and my Dads (which also happens to be my grandads too!)

My brothers middle name is my dads name

MGMidget · 03/11/2009 15:53

I like Kai, definitely a surfey name but I wouldn't have immediately thought 'working class'. A bit of a trendy name though so if that makes it working class then so be it. I wouldn't be embarrassed to have a child called Kai and I don't think they would get teased at school. Wayne on the other hand has more potential for teasing (and I would call that a 'working class' name) but then middle names are hardly ever said so I don't think they matter. Anyway why shouldn't they repeat the family tradition - a perfectly good justification for choice of a middle name.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 03/11/2009 16:47

Why? I dunno exactly, their backgrounds I suppose, they seem quite 'normal' folk apart from the oodles of money, working class done good you know?

Of course I could be wrong, they might be posh as they come.

ladymarian · 03/11/2009 16:58

Chavtastic as expected!! Agree with Northern though, I'm sure that Kai Wayne will bring joy to his parents

5inthehousesofparliament · 03/11/2009 17:02

Could have been worse, could have been Mackenzie.

Nothing wrong with the name. Would it have had the same effect on here if C&W had announced his name as Kai and kept the Wayne part to themselves I wonder?

Oh, and FWIW, DS1's middle name is the same as DH and FIL's, DS2's middle name is after an uncle and DS3's middle name is after his grandad who died when I was pregnant with him. Nothing common there.

StShakey · 03/11/2009 17:11

Re 'egotistical' comment, our DS1 has my DH's fathers name as a middle name (my FIL passed away about 8 years ago) and our DS2's middle name is my DH's grandfathers name (who passed away when I was pregnant with DS2. I don't consider it egotistical at all, rather a mark of respect.

mrsbean78 · 03/11/2009 17:15

I work with kids in a health context with large caseloads drawn from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and don't find Kai even vaguely offensive as a name, having met a number of boys with this name over the years. Who decides that Kai is chavtastic but other recently popularised names such as Ruby and Romy send a different message? I find the discussion about class in this context more tacky and repulsive than any of the names mentioned. Two people had a baby and gave it a reasonable name. It may not be to your taste, but it is hardly outrageous. This child isn't a Moon Unit or Benson and Hedges! Live and let live.

edward23 · 03/11/2009 17:32

i think kai is not as bad as name as some people have stated. i dont think it goes well with either wayne or surname rooney, but i have heard a lot worse.

Jujubean77 · 03/11/2009 17:39

Hideous names, both of them.

juicy12 · 03/11/2009 17:52

I think it's a perfectly suitable name. Totally chavvy just like mum and dad. Not sure Wayne's the brightest button in the box - maybe giving his son his own name will be useful lest he should ever forget what he's called.

worriedamy · 03/11/2009 18:30

I like the name Kai, it was on our short-list for DS born in July. I'm glad we didn't call it him now though, as when he had got a bit older, people would have thought we had named him after a celebrity baby!

claricebeansmum · 03/11/2009 18:33

More of a penance than a name.

Louby3000 · 03/11/2009 19:03

Poor kid and the new mum and dad. Kai is a really nice name, and Wayne, well so what its the "tradition" in the family. Thats cool. My sons middle name is William like his dad, like his dad. Are we idiots?

scottishmummy · 03/11/2009 19:05

who cares what a footballer and fembot call their wean?

Bodeniiites · 03/11/2009 19:08

In Scotland is a Kai not a herd of cows waiting for a bull or something?
