DH's latest suggestion is 'Bosco' - is it awful?

DH has unconventional taste in names (to put it diplomatically - previous suggestions include Reef, Mowgli, and Roni) - his latest suggestion is Bosco - my immediate reaction was no but somehow it is growing on me. His (Irish) uncle was called Bosco but neither of us know anyone else of this name.

So honest opinions please - what do you think? (for the record I like more traditional names such as Noah and Gabriel although I also like a few unusual ones like Inigo although DH hates it)

It sounds vaguely Cornish to me, but no, I really don't like it.

Mowgli? Really??

DrSkidaddle · 31/10/2009 20:59

yes really this is what I am up against....

diddl · 31/10/2009 20:59

Yes,it´s awful!

Like Noah, Gabriel & Inigo, though!

jennifersofia · 31/10/2009 21:00

Sorry, don't like it. Noah is good though.

sherby · 31/10/2009 21:01

It reminds me of Bosch, sorry

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 31/10/2009 21:02

Yes, it is dreadful. As are his other suggestions.

Do not, under any circumstances, allow him to register the birth unaccompanied.

mananny · 31/10/2009 21:02

I like Mowgli and Reef

But then I am strange...

littleducks · 31/10/2009 21:02

Eerm, its my fav salad at pizza express (may need to scroll down)

i think it means forest in italian

FabioExtremeAngler · 31/10/2009 21:02

HA HAHA HAHA HHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHA HA

DuchessOfAvon · 31/10/2009 21:03

It sounds like someone off a 1980's US cop show - either the young, dumb rookie or the unkempt, slightly grimy, disillusioned old timer. Its a bit odd imo. But if you both like it, why not?

KnickKnacksCauldronOfHorrors · 31/10/2009 21:06

Oh dear god no!! You can't name your child after an Irish puppet
Fab cartoon from back in the day, a rite of passage for all Irish kids in the 70's, but not a good name.
I do know 1 elderly man called Bosco though.

DrSkidaddle · 31/10/2009 21:07

excellent - lots of ammunition, thank you! Even DH wouldn't want to name his child after a pizza, beer or the Dukes of Hazard! We knew it meant forest in Italian but that just makes him like it more...

maybe I can do some partner swapping and have a Noah with diddl while my DH has a Mowgli with mananny

DrSkidaddle · 31/10/2009 21:08

knickknacks - my DH knows about that puppet too (he's Irish) and he still isn't put off!

Like Roni as love roni size.Noah gabriel and inigo all great.

NoBiggy · 31/10/2009 21:11

Mushroom pizza.

mananny · 31/10/2009 21:12

LOL

I'm perfectly happy raising other people's babies at the moment thanks... no stretchmarks

RomanCandleJollster · 31/10/2009 21:13

awful - yes
Dukes of Hazzard - yes
sorry!

TabithaWitches · 31/10/2009 21:14

I associate it with St John Bosco.

Not a name I would choose myself

RomanCandleJollster · 31/10/2009 21:15

just spotted the Irish link
what's wrong with
Rafferty
Finnian
Malachy
....?

DrSkidaddle · 31/10/2009 21:18

Roman - I LOVE Malachy but DH says it's not a 'proper' Irish name. He likes Killian (I can't get past the Kill part) Dara (don't like) and Tadgh (like the sound but don't know if I can cope with the spelling esp. as we live in England)

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 31/10/2009 21:22

It is bad.

But it is better than Mowgli.

DrSkidaddle · 31/10/2009 21:25

LOL thefallenmadonna - you see that was what I was worried about - that my judgement has become so skewed following all his utterly bizarre suggestions that Bosco actually seems like a perfectly reasonable name! Thank you all for putting me straight

OP posts:
mananny · 31/10/2009 21:25

Doesn't anyone remember how darn cute Mowgli was in The Jungle Book??!! OK I know it was a cartoon but I have a soft spot for the book and for Mowgli. More than likely would never name my child that (bullies, a lifetime of therapy, never coming over for Sunday lunch...) but I still like it.
