DH's latest suggestion is 'Bosco' - is it awful?

DH has unconventional taste in names (to put it diplomatically - previous suggestions include Reef, Mowgli, and Roni) - his latest suggestion is Bosco - my immediate reaction was no but somehow it is growing on me. His (Irish) uncle was called Bosco but neither of us know anyone else of this name.

So honest opinions please - what do you think? (for the record I like more traditional names such as Noah and Gabriel although I also like a few unusual ones like Inigo although DH hates it)

It's touch too if you're trying to spell it right isn't it?

MadBadAndWieldingAnAxe · 31/10/2009 22:27

Now, this is fascinating, because it seems to me that - although I admit it's not really to my taste - Rosco is at least recognisable as a name whereas (frutta di) Bosco is an ice cream flavour.

Mananny - What's the betting that Sun, Moon, Rain and Star will call their children John and Jennifer? One generation's wacky is another's commonplace and vice versa.

This is why my first ever post on MN was on a name thread. All human life is here.

LMAO in the kindest possible way Keith!!! See, now tell him to imagine if his parents had named him Mowgli, would he have been bullied more or less?

Names are a crazy concept if you think about it. We get no choice in the matter, unless we change our name, and are stuck with whatever whim our crazy parents went through during an uber hormonal time of their lives. I have a Rudyard Kipling inspired name too, now that I think about it. perhaps another reason I feel an affinity towards Mowgli? LOL.

mananny · 31/10/2009 22:29

Madbad, exactly!!!! I think it goes in waves, nameloopiness.

cheeseandeyeballsarnie · 31/10/2009 22:33

op- im into slightly unusual names(although my dc all ended up with common names) but id get a divorce.

MadBadAndWieldingAnAxe · 31/10/2009 22:35

Mananny - So your name is Rikki Tikki Tavi?

Actually, I wonder whether OP's OH has considered that one ...

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:39

Go for Sher Khan or Baghera. Stand out names.

Or to go back to the Irish roots, what about GGuiness?

mananny · 31/10/2009 22:39

Close, madbad, but not close enough LOL...

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:40

Shocking spelling, sorry.

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:42

Madbad, are you Kaa?

cece · 31/10/2009 22:43

Boscoes is the name of our local youth club disco.

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:44

Having allsorts of probs with typing...meant to be mananny.

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:47

Love Gabriel as a name. Was one of our considerations, as was Killian. Like you, the shortened 'Kill' put us off,as did 'Gay' for Gabriel. Kids can be cruel!

mananny · 31/10/2009 22:47

Nope Knotty I'll probably give myself away and someone here will know me, but I have a whole book written about me

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:47

Not enough Brians though.

ZacharyQuack · 31/10/2009 22:50

Bosco is George Costanza's ATM code

mananny · 31/10/2009 22:50

I think Brian might enter the realms of coolness again thanks to Family Guy.

MadBadAndWieldingAnAxe · 31/10/2009 22:51

Hmm, as a Brownie leader I'm Brown Owl but if I'd got involved with the cubs I'd be Akela.

I have my own theory about mananny ...

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:51

Got ya, either you are 'The Phantom Rickshaw', a tad wordy for a first name I grant you, or 'Kim'.

ZacharyQuack, that is one of my fave kids books!!!! Love Hairy McLairy from Donaldson's Dairy!!!!!

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:53

Derek is much underestmated.

KnottyLocks · 31/10/2009 22:55

One of Jude Law's offspring is Rafferty. Good name. Like Raffy as a shorter version.

mananny · 31/10/2009 22:56

I like Derek, it's a close relative's name. I guess it helps he's a nice guy. Don't you find that a person's character influences your opinion of their name?
