DH's latest suggestion is 'Bosco' - is it awful?

DH has unconventional taste in names (to put it diplomatically - previous suggestions include Reef, Mowgli, and Roni) - his latest suggestion is Bosco - my immediate reaction was no but somehow it is growing on me. His (Irish) uncle was called Bosco but neither of us know anyone else of this name.

So honest opinions please - what do you think? (for the record I like more traditional names such as Noah and Gabriel although I also like a few unusual ones like Inigo although DH hates it)

His name has nothing to do with his nickname we just come up with names that we think suits them. I named my son and then afterwards felt he looked like a Robert so have called him Bobbytreacle (looked like a Robert and sweet as sugar) since he was born and that has morphed into Bosco because you can't call a kid Bobbytreacle after the age of 3 years. Ok we are weird but he loves his name and so do adults. Off to hide now!

KristinaM · 05/11/2009 22:52

sorry voulezvous, but i think its awful

ok as a nickname but not as a "proper" name

reservejudgement · 05/11/2009 22:57

My little brother loved Bosco 9 ( the puppet) and talked in that squeaky voice for 2 years! I nearly lost my mind!
Oscar?
Oisin?
Setanta?

voulezvou · 05/11/2009 23:23

KristinaM, I don't think it's the done thing to criticise a name that a child already has. Different if the baby is not born. How would you feel if I said your little X name was shocking?

It's ok to slag of celebs though!

KristinaM · 05/11/2009 23:34

i was responding to the op who asked if the name was "awful"

i was apologising to you as your child already has this name and i didn't wish to offend you

otherwise the only people who can post now on this thread are those who love the name

nooka · 06/11/2009 04:34

This is the Bosco I'm familiar with: www.giantbomb.com/bosco/94-3658/ great nn, not a good given name.

Abubu · 06/11/2009 11:57

Not good.
Would his nickname be Bossy?

Vintagepommery · 06/11/2009 12:07

Sounds like a supermarket chain to me

MintyCane · 06/11/2009 12:17

Yes a cupermarket or a cleaning fluid. I am off to Bosco the sink.

MintyCane · 06/11/2009 12:17

supermarket obviously

saintmaybe · 06/11/2009 12:19

dh strongly favoured Lucifer for dc3

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 12:29

6 pages of discussion though!!

I am coming round to it!! outside of Ireland anyway. It'd be a non-runner in Ireland, but in the UK,,,,,,,,,,, I'm warming to it.. Hypothetically. NOt for my own child obviously.

Sunshinemummy · 06/11/2009 12:31

I like Rosco and this is the Dukes of Hazard sherrif not Bosco. Not keen on Bosco though - but too strange.

How about some of these (and I do know children with these names):

  • Jago
  • Indiana
  • Rex
  • Raffi
  • Hamish
  • Manny
  • Ludo

Any of those grab you?

soremummy · 06/11/2009 12:41

DOnt' inflict a child with that name It just sounds awful sorry! When I hear that name I have visions of being made watch that stupid red haired high pitched squeaky puppet followed by having nightmares after enduring the lambert puppet theatre shows

ludog · 06/11/2009 13:02

LOL soremummy! Did you like Wanderley Wagon though?

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 13:11

I remember it. There was a scary hissing snake. Do you remember that? Very scary.

I was in Powerscourt once as a child and they were filming it. We were allowed a quick peek inside the wagon and there was just loads of sound equipment and lights! wasn't so scared after that.

posieparker · 06/11/2009 13:17

I like Reef.

posieparker · 06/11/2009 13:17

And Hamish and Hector.

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 13:22

Reef!?? really

Love Hamish and Hector though (and Victor).

Waht was the name of that snake on WW?

posieparker · 06/11/2009 13:24

I have an Artemus, so no accounting for normality here!

ludog · 06/11/2009 14:19

MaggieMonday.... it was Sssssneaky Ssssnake!! There was also the Whirlagig witch. Lucky you seeing the inside of the Wagon, I would have loved that. I try to explain it to dds but they can't get what was go great about WW, mind you, they can't get their heads around the fact that we just had one tv station either!

MaggieMonday · 06/11/2009 14:42

Well, I just looked it up on wikipedia and half of it went over my head. I didn't realise that the judge represented good and the snake represented evil. I just thought, wow that fortycoats is a right tramp and gis a look inside the wagon!

soremummy · 06/11/2009 15:15

Maggie and ludog you haven't half made me lol at wanderley wagon it was buried deep in my brain do you remember judge doing green cross code adverts? So sorry for the hijack of the thread we should have started another one

ludog · 06/11/2009 16:40

" Remember,
ONE Look for a safe place,
TWO Don't hurry stop and wait
THREE look all around and listen before you cross the road
FOUR let all the traffic pass you
FIVE then walking straight across you
SIX keep watching that's the code
Know the Safe Cross Code..... KNOW THE CODE"

reservejudgement · 06/11/2009 16:58

Safe place, stop and wait
Safe place, stop and wait
Safe ground, look around, listen for the traffic sound
If traffic's coming, let it pass
Until you cross the road at last
Then walking straight across the road
KEEP WATCHING! THAT'S THE CODE
