DH's latest suggestion is 'Bosco' - is it awful?

DH has unconventional taste in names (to put it diplomatically - previous suggestions include Reef, Mowgli, and Roni) - his latest suggestion is Bosco - my immediate reaction was no but somehow it is growing on me. His (Irish) uncle was called Bosco but neither of us know anyone else of this name.

So honest opinions please - what do you think? (for the record I like more traditional names such as Noah and Gabriel although I also like a few unusual ones like Inigo although DH hates it)

I loved Bosco (the puppet) , and the name is not too bad, imo. Even if Bosco's name was suggested by the Irish for box, bosca, it's still a bona fide name.

Maybe your DH is thinking of something with an O ending to go with Milo? How about Arlo? Or Jago? (Cornish name, from Diego, means James) Or Hugo? I knew a Rieffe (pr. Reef)-- he was Phillippino. I think some celeb baby is named Bronx Mowgli Somethingorother, so a thumbs down for Mowgli (and Bronx, obviously).

Truly, truly dreadful. Sounds like some kind of down-market shop. Inigo is nice, but was travelling by train the other day and there was a group of school kids in my carriage, one of whom was called Inigo. Several people in the group constantly called him Indigo, which I think would happen all the time.

Noah and Gabriel are okay if you're religious.

Without the knowledge of Dukes of Hazard and Irish hand puppets, I quite like Bosco. Perhaps because it reminds me of Don Bosco school in the German town that my DH is from.

They were visited by Kilian (isn't it spelt with one L?) so the name Kilian is popular there too. I like it.

Mowgli however...

"Saint Kilian, also spelled Killian (or alternatively Irish: Cillian), was an Irish missionary bishop and the apostle of Franconia (nowadays the northern part of Bavaria), where he began his labours towards the end of the 7th century.

There are several biographies of him. The oldest texts which refer to him are an 8th century necrology at Würzburg and the notice by Hrabanus Maurus in his martyrology. According to Maurus, Kilian was a native of Ireland, whence with eleven companions he went to eastern Franconia and Thuringia. After having preached the Gospel in Würzburg, he succeeded in converting to Christianity the local lord, Duke Gozbert, and much of the population."

There you are. Irish but Patron Saint of Franconia. My DH is from that area and I always liked the name.

You could go for the Cillian spelling but that makes me think Girls name. Kilian is nice.

Oooh Arlo is lovely! My sister stole my favourite boy and girl names so I have to come up with new ones. If I carry on the way I'm going though I will be living in a cabin in the woods with 17 cats, scaring all the high school kids.

Hey OP, how about Arlo Killian or Killian Arlo? They are definitely different names but they sound lovely together!

I was scanning activ convos, failed to read the thread topic and thought you were asking if some random hypermarket was awful.

However, having now realised the context is names it has grown on me. Bos for short is nice-we said it meaning 'good' when I was younger. I really like Maurice- got to be handsome with that name!

Nighty night all, I must also slip off into the Land of Nod or I'll sleep away my entire day off tomorrow. And seeing as I only have one a week that would be a terrible waste.

A lot of very sensible suggestions from Rudyard Kipling's works and yet no mention of the man himself's name! Could be shortened to Rudy??
