DH's latest suggestion is 'Bosco' - is it awful?

DH has unconventional taste in names (to put it diplomatically - previous suggestions include Reef, Mowgli, and Roni) - his latest suggestion is Bosco - my immediate reaction was no but somehow it is growing on me. His (Irish) uncle was called Bosco but neither of us know anyone else of this name.

So honest opinions please - what do you think? (for the record I like more traditional names such as Noah and Gabriel although I also like a few unusual ones like Inigo although DH hates it)

Mowgli means "little frog," a name given to him by his wolf adoptive parents as he was an ugly little thing.

Plea to everyone: please research the books and not name kids after cute Disney characters.

(Actually Quasimodo is a nice name and in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame he was quite a sweet little chap)

TsarChasm · 01/11/2009 13:53

Or 'Kino' (from The Pearl)

scaryclaireyboo · 01/11/2009 13:54

I just knew this would be you

Bosco makes me think costco I'm afraid...

And anyway, as you have a Z and an M, this one needs to begin with A

twosofar · 01/11/2009 15:30

Talk about Lost in Translation!

Bosco was NOT the sheriff in the Dukes of Hazzard and it certainly was not "bosco peeco train" (although that is without a doubt the funniest thing I have read for ages!)

His name was Rosco P. Coltrane for all you 70's kids out there but back on topic, BOSCO is the Italian for "wood" (as in forest)

Loving the thread!

Love, love, LOVE Bosco. Unfortunately, DH hates it. Life is so unfair.

ludog · 02/11/2009 14:19

MamaLazarou...perhaps you could swop dhs with DrSkidaddle and then everyone would be happy with their dcs names. (How do you feel about Mowgli btw?)

DrSkidaddle · 02/11/2009 14:48

LOL clairey. I'm (or rather he's) so predictable - like the idea of having a name beginning with A though - any suggestions?

MamaLazarou - maybe we could swap DHs? (I know, I know, I must stop pimping the poor man out just because I don't like his taste in names

mathanxiety - quite like Arlo and Jago (and Ivo) but DH has vetoed them all.

MissGreatBritain - Quite like that people might call Inigo Indigo - better than calling Killian Kill surely?

Like Raffy for Rafferty too but I know that DH won't go for it as it is not a 'proper' Irish name (i.e. it is a surname)

Anyway I can't even tell him about this thread because he specifically told me not to ask about Bosco on MN because he knew it would put me off!

Bosco?
Ta se uaifeasach, OP!

(=that's terrible, Bosco's early 80's catchphrase.)

Greensleeves · 02/11/2009 15:06

I went to school with a Bosco

don't recall him ever having any trouble with teasing or anything

never heard of the puppet

ludog · 02/11/2009 15:53

Here he is, in all his glory. www.youtube.com/watch?v=40krPiEi4x8&feature=related
Op, unless ds has bright red hair, an annoying squeaky voice and lives in a box, I wouldn't call him Bosco! (Especially not if you are ever thinking of bringing him to visit his Irish relatives.)

claireyBANG · 04/11/2009 17:14

Hmm A names...

Use Atticus, go on, for me?

or some suggestions here

SunChaser · 04/11/2009 19:09

Fine for a clown.

Otherwise very very bad.

jamandjerusalem · 04/11/2009 19:41

Amos?

Hunter?

Wolf?

baskingseals · 04/11/2009 21:36

Have to say I like your dh's style, I really do. Also like Mowgli.

JesusChristOtterStar · 04/11/2009 23:04

dont mind bosco

we have a child nn Mowgli so love it

adore hunter since i was 18 and saw Paris Texas

FanjolinaJolie · 05/11/2009 13:48

Bosco is great! I think the other kids would be very envious of that name.

First thing that did pop into my head was 'Roscoe Pecoe Train' a la Dukes of Hazzard. Not sure why.

voulezvou · 05/11/2009 15:31

Bosco is my son's nickname and I love it. He is just starting a school where there is an actual Bosco which is amusing. I think it is Polish for Wood but that may be wrong.

claireyBANG · 05/11/2009 16:43

I think it is a grower, my initial thought was costco but I'm kind of over that now

MaggieMonday · 05/11/2009 16:57

you can't you really, really can't

MaggieMonday · 05/11/2009 17:01

lol at Costco and Cheetos!

I do think Roscoe is quite cool.

MintyCane · 05/11/2009 17:04

Bosco is a type of chocolate sauce in America isn't it ?

MintyCane · 05/11/2009 17:05

www.boscoworld.com/ you can get Bosco t shirts.

Teapot13 · 05/11/2009 21:37

I'm not sure this helps, but the sheriff on Dukes of Hazard was Rosco. I would still have reservations about the name!

DrSkidaddle · 05/11/2009 21:43

voulezvous - what is your DS/s full name if you don't mind telling me? I could possibly go with Bosco as a nn if he had a proper name!

I actually ran it past a RL friend today and she loved it

Still love Noah though...
